Hey guys, i am looking into purchasing a new mac but cant decide between Macbook Air 13 inch and 15 inch macbook pro non retina . I need it for video editing 5-7 minutes of video and music production in Protools . I dont really need the optical drive. I may be moving to the UK and need something not too heavy. The air is a bit cheaper as well. Which do i choose?

The MBA really is not cheaper than the MBP. To upgrade the Air to similar specifications comparable to the 15" MBP you will have to spend $500 to get to 512 GB storage, $100 for a faster CPU which still will be slower than the MBP, and $79 for a CD drive. Total: $2278.
Admittedly the storage will be SS but video can have very large files and that will be a high priority requirement unless you want to be transferring data to an external HDD all the time. The comparable MBP will be $479 less. Add the antiglare high resolution display for $100, your still ahead by $379.
What you have to decide between is SS storage vs a superior display. As a part time video editor, I will always choose the display over speedy storage.

When I try in AD management console in the domain controller to add a new group for a user I get the following error:
"Object Picker cannot open because no locations from which to choose objects can be found" error message when you try to select objects from an Active Directory domain in Windows 2000
Our domain controller is a W2000 cluster (two W2000 advanced server machines) and this happens in one of the nodes of the controller while in the other node it Works well (the difference between them is where it fails, has the resources: print,
file sharing and quorum services). Both nodes of the controller have the remote registry service disabled and in the node where it fails when you start this service it works well but I don`t think this is the reason because in the other node with remote registry
service disabled it works. Solutions from the following support articles don`t work:

I have checked that the situation is independent of the domain administrator who tries to add the group to the user.
Can anybody help me? Which is the reason of this different behaviour from one cluster node to another ?

Thanks for your answer but I think this is not the case because the problem is not with NTFS and we don' have these problems:
Users or groups that have Full Control access cannot delegate permissions.
Users who have Full Control access cannot make permission changes on a DFS share.
If you give the non-privileged user the right to log on locally and you log on locally to the file server where the error message occurs, you can successfully edit the ACL.
It only happens with the AD management console. Now, for us it is not posible to upgrade the system.

Disk utility: verify selection- which to choose

When you open disk utility, you see the size/type of HD you have, then underneath usually "Macintosh HD." Assuming this is all you have and you haven't split your disk up, does it matter which you choose in order to repair and verify? Does each location produce different results?

Given the situation you described:
1. One hard drive in or attached the computer.
2. The hard drive has with only one partition/volume, i.e. you see something similar to the following in the left column of Disk Utility:<pre>233.8 GB Maxtor 7L250S0
Macintosh HD</pre>Then you can select either the device or the Macintosh HD volume.
The first line — 233.8 GB Maxtor 7L250S0 — is the device, i.e. the hard drive. The second line, Macintosh HD listed below and indented from the first line, is a volume on that device.
Note that to run Repair Disk on your normal startup disk, i.e. Macintosh HD, you need to startup from your Tiger Install Disk (or a bootable duplicate of Macintosh HD) and run Disk Utility from there.
Verify or Repair Permissions only apply to volumes on which Mac OS X is installed. Neither is an available choice for data-only volumes or devices.
When in doubt, select the volume you want to verify or repair.
Note that if you have a drive with multiple partitions, e.g.<pre>233.8 GB Maxtor 7L250S0

Data Volume 2
Data Volume 3</pre>select the device, and then select either Repair Disk or Verify Disk, all volumes on that device will be repaired or verified in sequence. Again, none of the volumes on that device should be your current startup disk, i.e. the disk from which you started up your Mac.
You can even select multiple devices by holding the Command Key while making selections. In such a case all volumes on the selected devices will be verified or repaired.
For example, if I started up from the Tiger Install DVD, launched Disk Utility, selected the two devices shown here:<pre>233.8 GB Maxtor 7L250S0
Macintosh HD
233.8 GB Maxtor 7L250S0
Data Volume 1
Data Volume 2
Data Volume 3</pre>and then clicked Repair Disk, all volumes on the two drives would be repaired.

Guitar & bass plugins with LP8 - several look good, but which to choose?

I record a lot of guitar & bass parts in a range of styles. Rather then continue to lug hardware around and record parts 'wet', I'm keen on getting a plug-in system for guitar and bass so I can record 'dry' and then experiment with different effects, amps etc in Logic.
Looking at the various options, NI Guitar Rig 3, IK Multimedia Amplitude (and Ampeg SVX) and the Line6 Gearbox Gold bundle all seem to do what I want.
But which to choose? I know that preferences will largely be subjective, but I would be grateful to hear from users of any and all of these systems to hear their views.
Which has the best array of sounds? The best sound quality? Do any of them use vast amounts of processing power and - most importantly - do any of thsm suffer from major latency problems when software monitoring?
All thoughts will be gratefully received to help me make a considered judgement on which to choose!

I have all the ones you've mentioned except the Line 6.
They all can sound equally good (or equally bad, depending on how much you've used real amps!) and seem to react about the same as far as latency is concerned.
The Logic Gtr amp can get some great sounds, although all of the amp models vary widely in tone and volume, so you really have to tweak. It's the easiest by far on the cpu.
The Ampeg SVX is killer on bass. Much better than the gtr amp sims are on gtr.
But with all of the IK Multimedia products I get a terrible buffer burp at the beginning of tracks.
It's like it won't clear the buffer from the previous pass until you burp it by quickly looping the first few blank bars before the track starts. I get this with T-Racks, Amplitube and SVX.
Guitar Rig 3 has the most toys to play with.
Pull up some of the Logic presets and see how they are using the Distortion plugins before the amp.
Turn off the limiters and gates. You also have a very wide range of colors to choose from with Logic's native plugs.
If you have to use plugins, then whatever you do, don't go back and forth between real tube amps and pedals. It's much easier that way to convince yourself that you almost have real tone.

When updating Java it asks about 32 bit or 64 bit. How do I know which to choose

Listener for JTabbedPane. Which to choose?

I would like to use some sort of Action Listener for each of the tabs.
ie when a particular tab is clicked,some action takes place.
Which actionListener shud I use that will perform the concerned action

well, you don't typically mix high-level AWT components with Swing, though. Button or Choice or List being high-level components. All Swing components are java.awt.Containers, of course.
If you can run in a Java 1.2 or higher JVM, then might as well use Swing.

I have an old user name tht is no longer accessible. I access fierfox through a new user name. I have copied the profile from the old user name. Can I have 2 profiles from which to choose when using firefox in the under the new username?

I have a user name on my computer that was tied in with the domain name of the server at my workplace. I would access Firefox under this user name. I have now changed jobs, and for good and obvious reasons can no longer utilize my previous company associated username.
I have set up a new username on the same computer. When I access Firefox, all of my old bookmarks are gone, because Firefox does not recognize me under the new username as the same person. In the meantime, I have established new bookmarks under the new username.
I have copied my profile from Firefox under my old username. Can I have two profiles under my new username and pick which one I want to use at that time when accessing Firefox?

You can not merge accounts.
Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to download them, you can not transfer them.

Mac Pro 2008 or iMac 27 i7 ? Which to choose?

I am looking to upgrade to a faster Mac from my current Macbook Pro and decided either on an iMac 27 inch i7 2.8 GHz 8 Gigs RAM 4870 Video card or buy a used Mac Pro 2008 with 2 x 2.8GHz 4 Core (8 core total) with 10 Gigs RAM and an 8800GT video card.
Both come to almost the same price. Problem is I don't know which to get. The system will be used mainly for software development, running windows 7 and linux as Virtual Machine, some light gaming, and music (sampling, etc)
I love the iMac's LED screen and the i7 certainly is fast but love the Mac Pro's expandability in terms of hard drives and memory and I would use it on my 30 inch LCD. That said, would I ever go past the Mac Pro's configuration of 2 TB's of drives (maybe) and more than 10 Gigs RAM (don't know)? You're stuck with the iMac in terms of hard drives forced to add slow external cases.
The Mac Pro is over 2 years old at this point but I know the Mac Pro is a work horse and the iMac has had issues.
Anyone have an opinion on this? Might it be worth saving some more cash (although would take another 6 months) and getting a 2009 Mac Pro?

Asked a lot and the new iMac makes it look better, but not for triple boot unless you stict to VMs most of the time. The freedom of having alternate OSs on their own drives and such.
AppleInsider gave the high end iMac makes sense if you go that route, and if you would need a monitor as well?

I am trying to understand the role of the two stacks in NW. Maybe anyone has a few
hints where I can find answers to the following questions:
- An overview of supported Standards (Java 5 since when?)
- An overview of which component runs on which stack? Portal->Java, Integration Server->ABAP and so on.
- Guidelines when to install both stacks and when to use just one stack? When do I use which one?
- Has SAP an stategy towards an one Stack solution (possibly Java?)

More and more products require ABAP backend and Java frontend.
For example Employee Self Service has been transerred from ABAP only ITS based to ABAP backend and Java frontend.
Same with SRM.

No. Core business functions are still being developed on ABAP and interface, GUI etc utilize JAVA.

There are many jre exe files: what are the differences and which I choose?

Having some problems, that I will describe in another message, I was looking for the latest jre.
I saw that on www.java.com there is 6 update 1, whereas on www.sun.com there is already 6 update 2. So, I would like to know when an update is made available on www.java.com and through automatic updates?
Also, I saw different names, and I would like to understand in an exact way what are the differences:

I understand that te iftw part means the it is a small download, only the setup module. But why there are some files that end with "-p", some with "-p-s", sm with "-i586"?

The question mark icon on the dlls indicates that LabVIEW is unsure of
the location of the DLL, or is unable to locate the DLL on your
system. This can happen if the DLLs do not exist, or if the "Call
Library Function Node" just specifies the name of the dll, and not the
entire path to the dll. IVI and Instrument driver VIs will
typically not supply the entire path to the DLL, whch would cause the
question mark icon to appear.
If your application is working properly, then you should ignore the
question mark in the dependencies list. If your application is
broken because the DLLs cannot be found, they are installed with the

3 HTTP Server. which to choose?

I have installed db11gR2 and upgraded APEX to version 4 on my Linux server with EPG.
There are 3 kind of HTTP Server
Oracle HTTP Server
Embedded PL/SQL Gateway
APEX Listner
I installed EPG, but after installation of this, I found and I read that
The EPG is convenient for smaller configurations. The EPG is not recommended for larger scale production use cases or Internet facing applications.
and yet
For this reason, it is not recommended to use the embedded PL/SQL gateway for applications that run on the Internet. Additionally, the embedded PL/SQL gateway does not provide the same flexibility of configuration and detailed logging as Oracle HTTP Server with mod_plsql.
So I ask myself 'maybe I'm wrong and I had to install another'.
So, Could someone tell me what the most appropriate in a production company with 300 end users and internet access, or pointing me a link where I can find info on this topic.

You don't actually need to uninstall the EPG, just follow the installation instructions for OHS to connect to your existing Apex installation. I think OHS is your best bet for external facing Apex applications. I'm much less interested in the Apex Listener since support for Tomcat was dropped which is our Java container of choice.
If you want to turn off the EPG it is as simple as SQL> exec dbms_xdb.sethttpport(0)
This command shows you what the current port is set to and will also show with a -> >$ lsnrctl status

On a separate note can anyone point to any real issues with the EPG?? It is my generally preferred choice for smallish intranet type applications (ie rman> backup database; - really does backup the entire application and data). I keep reading it is not recommended but without seeing any real details of why. My only real issue so far has been trying to read HTTP headers in the XE EPG but otherwise it seems to work well for my needs.

Which to choose - iBook G4 or Powerbook G4

I have a Powerbook G4 (15", three years old, 550MHz processor) and I have always been delighted with it - and still am.
Time to upgrade however I thought about the iBook as the only problem with the current model (apart from CPU power) is the edges of the lower half of the case are scratched to h*ll over the long hours of use, and the front area next to the magnetic catch is bald.
So other than the extra hard disc space, and a slightly better resolution screen, what extra do I get from a Powerbook ?
Is the Powerbook worth the extra money - anyone got both and care to offer advice?

By searching Apple Discussions you can find tons of threads that are similar to yours. Here is one of the most recent. I can't tell you which to buy, but I might be able to advise you. There's not much to say besides the difference "specs" from the information you have given us. But if you give us some insight on what you are going to use the computer for we and maybe some programs your interested in, that would help. If you still would like a break down of the specs I can list them off (with the dis/advantages). Heres a previous post with some of the "specs".

FCE Vs FC-pro - which to choose?

Hi - can anyone tell me what the basic difference is between FCE and FC-pro?
I have a set of HD video clops, each about 2 hours long in .MTS format form a panasonic HD camcorder which I need to edit down onto a set of DVDs. I also need to place some subtitles/headers at specific points for which I have the timing information seperately in a spreadsheet. Some dumb questions:
Is FCE likely to fulfill this requirement?
Are there any file-size or clip length handling limitations?
Is FC-Pro able to import AVCHD files directly ( I know FCE can do this)?
Would FC-Pro be overkill?

Is this AVCHD material? Do you have the original file structure or which the .mts files? if the latter neither version will handle it.
You can copy and paste from the spreadsheet.
The file size limitation would only be a limitation of the hard drive. 12 hours is the max length of a sequence.
Both convert the AVCHD to a different format.
