Which type of PCI slots do I have?
I want to upgrade my graphics card for gaming. I want to install a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT which is a PCI Express 2.0 interface. Can I put this in my MacPro? What are my options for better cards? From what I understand, which may be wrong, is I have 4 PCIe ports and 1 PCIe2 port? I can't seem to find anything in the System Profiler that says definitively.
The card I have says this under the Graphics/Displays section:

So I am confused because I cannot tell if the NVIDIA card is PCI or PCIe. Do I have four regular PCI slots and one PCIe slot or four PCIe slots and one PCIe2 slot? What options do I have for video cards that are 512MB or larger? I have some games that I would love to turn on all of the effects to the highest quality, Quake 4 being one of them. It seems they may just discontinue Mac support. I don't want be stuck with another unsupported card. Last time was with the VooDoo 64MB card that came out for Mac when I had a G3. 3DFX went out of business shortly after.
Quadro 4500 FX and the ATI Radeon X1900 XT? Both are 512MB, is one brand better than the other? Is there anything bigger? I have recently read a lot of reviews of the Radeon cards over heating. I would like to get something better if possible and prepare to not have to upgrade again so soon. Also nVidia has these other Quadros on this page:

Which type of PCMCIA slots has Portege 7220?
I've just got a Belkin USB 2.0 pcmcia card to fit in one of my pcmcia slots. This should give me 2 USB 2.0 sockets. I've put it in and my laptop is not seeing it at all. Thought it was a driver issue (I'm using XP) but now suspect that I don't have a Type II slot, It is an old laptop.
Can any one here tell me?For USB 2.0 you for sure need CardBus slot. Portege 7220 is not old at all, it has CardBus (you would not be able to insert the card otherwise, BTW). However, if PC card slot is set to PCIC compatible (not CardBus/16 bit) the laptop would behave the way you say. Check you BIOS settings.

I'm planning to purchase a 17" Macbook Pro and have wondered the same. I found an Apple Store that had both of them on display and was able to compare them a bit. Bear in mind, firstly, as has been said many times before, this is largely a matter of opinion.
Some observations:
Color on both screens is excellent. In the super-bright apple store I thought they were both easy enough to read and adequately bright. YMMV.
The glossy screen is VERY glossy. In the brightly lit apple store, there is basically no angle where there will be no reflections. However, it is possible to get rid of the worst of the glare by adjusting your viewing angle.
The matte screen is much less glossy. Fancy that. It's about the same as any old-fashioned screen you might have seen on another laptop.
Colors on the matte screen are perhaps a bit more "dull". Colors on the glossy display definitely "pop". If you have seen a matte cinema display next to a glossy cinema display, you know what you're dealing with here in my opinion.
The matte display has NO protection over it. It is just the thin plastic layer like you'd have on any laptop. If you touch it, it will sort of "haze" and then fade back to normal. From experience with these screens in the past, fingerprints and dust can be difficult to clean and you want to be careful what you use to clean it.
The glossy screen is covered with a solid piece of glass. If you touch it, it does not affect the display. My assumption is that it will clean very easily with glass cleaner and a cloth.
Given I have a 3yr old and have seen my matte displays degrade with time due to accidents etc, I think I'm going to go along with Apple on this one and go for the glossy screen. Aside from the durability factor, personally, I'd prefer the Matte display. Lack of glare trumps "pop" any day for me. -

I would like to know if it is possible to call Danish numbers from a Skype number, on a mobile phone with an Italian sim card inside - without being connected to the internet..?
I've already created a Skype number - and used it via my Italian mobile phone, when I was connected to the internet - but I need to be able to use it also when I'm not connected to the internet.. -And I need to be able to use it to call telephone numbers that I have not already registered beforehand (and as far as I understand the Skype To Go-set up, you need to do that for this solution, right?). Is there another solution for me??

Would this be best for my RAID card (its a 64bit RAID card going into a 32bit slot) or would it not work at all?

You will have to contact MSI Tech Support on that one, that question has crossed my mind to whether that is a full function PCI slot or not. It is the only open PCI slot if you have a Graphics Card in the Secondary x16 slot. If it is full function PCI slot, the only thing I know of that stop you using your 64-bit Controller in it are two Caps that may get in the way of the card over hang.

You should know your subject before you make comments like that on the Forum. Most all PCI 64-bit I/O cards will auto sense the slot type they are plugged into and adjust the interface to fit the slot capabilities. Only problems using a 64-bit PCI card in a 32-bit PCI slot is you loss interface bandwidth and there maybe physical components mounted behind the 32-bit slot that will not allow the PCI 64-bit card to be inserted.
Luckily I have communicated with Charker enough, that I do not think you statement would have steed him wrong, but someone with a low level of computer knowledge, you could have cost him/her a lot of money. Those Controller cards he is talking about cost two or three times what the Diamond Plus motherboard costs. Next time research you answers before you make it, if you not sure and if you do not know do not comment.

MSI 945p Neo3, which pci-e does it have?

I have a rather old MSI 945p Neo3 motherboard, and my graphics card just broke down. As my computer is old, and money is limited, I've decided to take the budget approach to buying a new graphics card, but I need to know if it will be compatible with my old motherboard. From what I understand, the 945p Neo3 uses a first generation PCI-E slot, and while PCI-E cards usually are backwards compatible, I've heard of people who have had problems with the very first generation of PCI-E (1.0a), while the slightly newer first generation PCI-E slots work (1.1). The card that I'm looking at is a ATI Radeon HD 5450 (which is the second cheapest card I can find at the moment). Does anyone know if this card will work on my aging computer?Quote

Which PCIe slot for gphx card?

I have had a problem with my mac pro 2006 rebooting spontaneously. I thought it must be the graphics card and finally pulled the graphics card out and left the mac pro on for a while to see if it would reboot. It didn't. It was solid. No graphics card = no problems, so I assumed it was the graphics card.
So, I decided to swap out my x1900 with a 4870. It's rebooting. I guess this has to do with power to the logic board or something. I have no idea, but I'm super frustrated since this thing isn't under warranty.
I decided to put the graphics card (the new 4870) in the 2nd to bottom PCI slot, rather than the bottom slot. I got a message on startup from the PCI Expansion Slot Utility: http://twitpic.com/2k2jeh
So, things seem to be stable (but I am not counting on it). Is my 4870 not running at full speed in the second slot? I'm not an expert in how the PCI slots are set up, and I'm trying to understand.

Slot two is 1x + 16x rather than "slot - one" which is just x16... so since slot two has that extra x1 I guess the 4870 cannot perform to its fullest, but pretty close?
I have a suspicion that something in the PCIe slot 1 chain may be broken?... like the power or something? I'm going to lower my fan speed down from 1800 RPM and see if it blows up. It probably will.
Anyone think I just need a new Power Supply, or maybe a new logic board?... how much do those things run? And if I call in on an unsupported system what sort of pricing is it for replacement parts like this? Bad? -

jnlp isn't an audio file format. It's just a java web-start program (Java Network Launching Protocol). -

ChrisThe AGP module is in Slot 1 & you can't install another type of PCI card in Slot 1. Other PCI cards can be installed in any of the 3 remaining slots. You may want to use Slot 3 for ease of installation & max space for airflow.
When installing items, turn the Mac Off, but leave it plugged in to a power outlet. When you open the side panel, touch the metal shield around the enclosure to discharge any static electricity on your body. You don't want to ZAP your logic board.

How do I know If I have a PCIE slot?
This might sound like a really stupid question but I need to know how I can tell if my Mac G5 1.8ghz has a PCIE slot for a graphics card. I tried looking at the more info under graphics/display but every time the program crashes. I don't get it. Anyway I want to get a Nvidia Geforce 7800GTX graphics card to run my computer on an HD tv. Any help on figuring this out is appreciated.

You will have PCIe if you have a Late 2005 Dual Core single 2.0, single 2.3 or dual 2.5 ghz (Quad) G5.
Yours isn't a dual core, so has 8x AGP graphics.
Best card for your machine, is a flashed Geforce 7800 GS. -
PCI slot in Thinkpad Dock II unusable
Hello, I have a Thinkpad a22m 2628-S1U which can be used with the Thinkpad Dock II. To avoid feeling tempted to buy a new laptop I bought that dock as well as an ATI Radeon x1550 to put in its PCI slot. These items were said to be compatible on http://thinkwiki.org the Linux thinkpad wiki.

I've tried multiple options in the BIOS. You can select AGP or PCI as the card for the root display device. The default is PCI so if there's a docked PCI card at POST, the BIOS will use that for the root display device... otherwise it will use the built in card. You can also select the root display device as LCD or CRT or both. The default is CRT so if there is an external monitor that's where the bootloader menu and such will appear, otherwise the laptop's own display gets used. Even if I've understood these incorrectly, all combinations yield a PCI video card that is not detected by lspci.
I've also tried loading the module dock right after thinkpad_acpi. It loads and appears in lsmod but it doesn't help the situation at all. It also doesn't add a dock file to /proc/acpi/ibm. I also tried passing pci=routirq to the kernel, whatever that does and I've tried changing the four PCI related IRQ numbers in the BIOS and this has not helped.I did upgrade the kernel yesterday and it caused the syntax of dmesg to change somewhat. The strangest thing has also happened recently. The laptop refuses to use its own display when starting up in the dock unless an external monitor is plugged in. If a CRT is plugged in, the docked laptop starts up and shows the splash screen on its LCD. If no CRT is plugged in, turning on the docked laptop results in a blank screen. This might have happened because I fiddled with the BIOS which would make alot of sense but resetting the BIOS to default configuration hasn't fixed the problem. I also could have broken a pin but the last thing I remember doing before this happened is running cat /sys/module/snd_ac97_codec/parameters/power_save. It's one of those untouchable virtual files that causes a kernel oops when I try to read it sometimes. I have no idea how this would break the dock but it doesn't matter. Even if using the dock requires some external monitor jazz, I still want the card to be detected and it isn't.
Sorry to bombard you with obscure information but I don't know where else to turn. I've asked on the thinkpad mailing list and IRC channel to no response and I've seen one other "knowledgeable person" mention these errors on the LKML. I will subscribe to that and ask him too. I'm just very surprised... this gave me the impression that what I wanted to do would work trivially and automatically on Linux and now I'm finding that it's broken for me and possibly every other Linux user. I will seek out thinkpad users from around here with all types of models and distros and see if they have any luck. So far Arch, Arch install CD and an ancient Ubuntu install CD don't work here. If anyone has this and can test it or can decipher some ideas from the posted output (new kernel parameters, new kernel config flags, new udev rules, new modules?) I'd really appreciate it. -
AGP Graphics card covers pci slot 2 & Problems with sound card

Hi i have an M Audio Delta192 Audiophile soundcard which is not working fully
i have been on the phone to the M Audio technical support about this
my problem is apparently i need to put the pci Soundcard card into the first slot after my graphics card which would be slot no 2
my graphics card has a fan on top which covers pci slot no 2 so the next available slot is slot 3 which is where i have my soundcard now
a lot of the functions available are greyed out in the M Audio Delta control panel this is the software used to control the parameters of the soundcard
is this right do i have to install my Soundcard in slot no 2 for it to work correctly
if so is there any way around this
my graphics card is a ATI Radeon 9800 XT
if there is no way around this are there any agp cards that i can get that dont have a great big fan on top that covers pci slot 2 that are good quality & can run 2 monitors

In the mean time I have bought a Mini-PCI-e from Runcore. Originally it's for the Dell Mini, but it was the best one I could find which does fit in the slot (50 mm). It was for me to find out that the laptop is not compatible with a mini SSD. The bios doesn,t recognize my card, hence the computer won't start if I Insert the card.
Maybe if this card was inserted instead of my Ethernet card, if only I could reach it.... Rumours are that my "free" slot only applies for select models of a tv-tuner card and for a intel memory module (according to the service manual)
Anyway, I do not know exactly for your computer, but I think it won't work for you either.
Maybe that you can get more information out of the service manual of your laptop.
