Which USB 2 port charges iPod while iMac sleeps?

I've tried them all, and once the iMac is asleep, the light goes off on the iPod shuffle. (2nd Gen.) iMac is a new one. Thanks.
T

All three USB ports on my white 20" C2D remain powered during sleep;
I just checked them with the power lamp on a USB-powered audio box.
I'd think that would have to be true of all Macs -- if USB power was
off during sleep, HOW could the USB keyboard signal the computer
to wake up?
WRT the iPod, are you sure the light is a power indicator, rather than an
activity indicator? Maybe the iMac "unmounts" the iPod before sleeping.

  • Leopard 10.5.6 Doesn't Allow iPhone Charge while iMac Sleeps

Since updating to 10.5.6 I cannot charge my iphone at night while my iMac is asleep. This is true when the cable is connected through the apple keyboard and when plugged directly into the rear of the iMac. I know there have been similar reports regarding updated usb kexts, but this is really annoying and a waste of electricity if I have to power on my computer all night. Any thoughts?

Same issue here. The dock is connected to the left USB port of the aluminium keyboard, as it has been for months. With 10.5.5 everything worked fine: Every night I plugged the iPhone 2G into the dock and the next morning the iPhone was fully charged. Since I updated to 10.5.6 the iPhone battery is drained in the morning.

  • Charging ipod while computer is asleep

Hi i was wondering if you can charge an iPod touch when it is connected to the computer via USB cable. I am charging it using a MacBook Pro and it will indicate that it's charging when the computer is on but if I close the computer or put it to sleep it will stop charging the IPod. The annoying thing is that when I turn the computer on to charge the iPod this is normally during the night when I am sleeping and the computer will put it self to sleep. I want it to charge the iPod but I still want the computer to be able to sleep as to not take up battery power.

The computer must be awake when the iPod is first plugged in, but after that it should continue to charge even if the computer goes to sleep.

  • Possible to charge iPod while using Video out option?

I've read that you can use video out while maintaining its charge by simply 'ejecting' the iPod from Windows (but maintaining the physical cable connection).
But what about using a generic wall charger? Such as this one:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009T81YE/qid=1146811575/sr=8-1/ref=pdbbs1/103-4014541-7815810?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=301185
Or even using apple's official wall charger? With one of these pieces of equipment is the iPod locked in "do not disconnect" mode? Or is it free to be used?
I hope someone can get back to me soon! Thanx
      Windows XP Pro

using the wall charger does not put up the "do not disconnect" screen. thats only wen its connected to a computer. so yes u can keep ur ipod on charge while using the video out.

  • Using usb power to charging

using usb power to charging ipod touch battery life will lasting long or not ?

It doesn't matter, as long as the power source provides the correct voltage, be that a USB port on a computer or USB power adapter.

  • But wait a minute... (USB charging while iMac is asleep)

From MacWorld, in their first review.
"There are still three USB 2.0 ports on the back, but Apple added a neat feature that lets you charge an iPod from one of these ports even when your iMac is sleeping. Previously the computer had to be both on and awake to charge your iPod."
    Is the writer on crack???

Thankfully I'm able to answer my own question. I have an LG BluRay burner attached to my Belkin USB hub and it seems that when it is turned on it periodically does something that activates the USB bus in the iMac. This is enough to cause the HDDs to briefly spin up and when they realise there is no activity they shut down again. Since this was happening every 15 seconds (approx) I have decided to just turn off the BluRay drive until needed, which thankfully is a rare event. I hope this helps others lose a little less hair over similar issues

  • Charging peripherals while iBook in Sleep Mode or Shut Down (Hot USB Ports)

I would like to be able to charge my iPhone or iPhone while connected to the iBook. However I would prefer the charging method to work in "Sleep Mode" or when the computer is shut down, still plugged into a wall outlet. Has anyone had any success with finding an after-market provider or a solution to get "Hot USB" ports installed on the iBook G4's? I heard in passing this feature would be available soon on the newer Apple notebooks but have yet to see it.

This isn't something I'd noticed before, but my goodness, you're right!
I'm certain I was able to charge my third gen iPod while it was plugged into my sleeping iBook, as long as the iBook was also connected to an outlet.
My MacBook, while sleeping, will charge a device regardless of if it's connected to the outlet or not.
What OS is your iBook running? Maybe that's a clue to solving this issue.

If all your ports are in use, try buying a USB hub, they are inexpensive and will give you several more ports.  Google for them.

  • No USB 2 port in my G4, how can I charge and connect iPod 30GB?

I dont have a USB 2 port in my G4, how can I charge and connect my brand new iPod 30GB. My G4 only has USB 1 ports. The quick start guide says Can I buy an adapter or something? I'm running OS 10.4.4

You can use the USB 1.1 port to sync and charge your iPod. It will just be slower than USB 2.0.
As far as an adapter... what model computer do you have?
There are USB 2.0 adapters for many Macs... but not all of them.

  • Charging phone using USB ports while in sleep

    Hey guys!
I recently updated my macbook pro mid 2011 to the new operating system: MAVERICKS
I used to do this little handy thing, where i used my mac as a powerbank for my phone once it was empty. I would insert a micro usb cable in one of the usb ports, and it would be active and thus charge my phone....
It worked before, but in mavericks it's gone!
Now it seems like in mavericks the usb-ports aren't powered during sleepmode anymore... how do i change this back?
    Thanks in advance!

I run Mavericks, my USB ports charge my iPad and / or iPhone while asleep. The behaviour has not changed.

  • My brand-new iPod touch (5th Gen) battery takes a very long time to fully charge, even while not in use. Why is this and what should I do?

Just recently bought a brand-new iPod touch, 5th generation. To be exact, got it two days ago, this past Saturday, on 12/13/2014. Initially, when I first turned it on, it had a fully charge and I didn't need to charge it. I also didn't see anything in the very small and limited start-up guide you receive with it to charge it for a certain amount of time before use, or to use it until the battery dies, then charge all the way, like a lot of electronic devices have you do when you first purchase them.
So I was assuming I didn't need to do anything like that. First question, should I have charged it for a period of time before use? Should I have used it until the battery died, then plugged it in and charged it fully before use? Or is none of this necessary initially and iPod batteries are good to go from the start?
Please excuse me if this is an obvious question, as this is my first ever iPod. Anyways, like I said, nothing in the "instructions" said anything about that, so I didn't do it, I just used it until it got below 20% battery left, then I plugged it in.
Now for the battery itself, it takes literally a day or so to fully charge, even while not in use. Even if I use it for a while, turn off the iPod to make sure it shuts off all background data and apps, and then plug it in to charge, it still charges extremely slowly. I've never seen a device take this long to charge. As for the battery life itself, I'd say at full charge it lasts about 4-5 hrs, maybe 6, and then I have to charge it again. Meanwhile it takes around 24 hours, without me using it, to fully charge. If I use it while its charging, the battery decreases faster than it charges, and eventually I'll get the typical "20% battery remaining" message pop up.
I know it is charging, as the lightning symbol is next to the battery symbol. Specifically, right now, I plugged it in about 1 hr 30 minutes ago, and it has barely gone up. Also, whenever I press the home button to check the battery, I can see it jump down from about 50% to somewhere around 25%-30%. What is that about?
This is really frustrating, and I'm seriously contemplating either taking it back and trying my luck with a different iPod, or just taking it back and getting my money back. Any help and clarification on this matter would be greatly appreciated, and I'll answer any questions I can to shed more light on this.

It will take longer to charge the 5G's battery than either the 3G or 4G's battery.

  • IPod charging "problem" via iMac G5 compared to Mains.

When I charged my iPod Photo via the USB socket on the back of my iMac G5, I only got around 4 hours playback. When I charged the same iPod with the same cable, but using the plug adaptor for the wall electricity outlet, I got 12 hours roughly.
Is there anything I should be concerned about, especially with regard to the power coming from the iMac? Is this a power supply issue? My iMac is performing as normal, but this odd iPod behaviour is somewhat worrying.
    Thanks.

As discovered by other users of various Mac models, some few will charge while the machine is in Sleep mode. It seems most others actually
    b Drain
the iPod if it is left connected while the Mac is in Sleep mode.
It is a bit of irregular behavior, because some do, some don't and no consistency I have seen (and as reported in this thread by individual who found different results with changed power supply unit.).
From the iPod FAQ, it seems they suggest that sleep charging seems to be more likely to work with FireWire... <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60920>:
    b Question:
Can iPod charge while my computer is asleep?
b Answer: Yes, in some cases.
If you connect the iPod to your computer by FireWire, and your computer is sleeping and also connected to AC power, in most cases the iPod will charge. If the iPod does not charge when connected this way, either wake the computer or connect the iPod directly to an AC power adapter.
And that article is contradicted by this one <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60941>:
b Your computer goes to sleep
Your computer can only charge iPod when it's turned on and not asleep. Make sure your computer on and is not set to go to sleep when you want to charge iPod.
Tip: Some Macintosh computers can charge iPod mini even though they're asleep. If your sleeping computer doesn't charge iPod mini, don't worry, just wake it and let iPod mini charge.
This document <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60971> has a good summary of the connection capabilities of the various iPods.
So it seems we each need to do an experiment to see if our configuration works : take low charge iPod, attach to Mac, let go into sleep mode, and see how much play time is available after long sleep attached, versus the Mac awake or powered adapter charge results.
(my latest configuration I have not tested: new iMac G5 RevB w iPod mini 6GB - I've been charging either via USB and computer on/awake, or by powered USB hub, or wall adapter charging - I have not tried sleep mode charging (or draining as case may be... ;^)

I have had your exact problem with my old 3GS, now I cannot even get it to turn on, I still see that it is supposed to be charging though, but it never charges any so it seems.
I replaced the Lower Dock Connector Assembly back when it still charged while hooked to my PC, and it found it made no real difference.
