Which version of microsoft office? 2004? student teacher?

Hi
I'm thinking of buying microsoft office. I transfered it from my iBook G4 to my MB, but it runs a bit slow. And if my Boyf is using word on the iBook then I can't use it on my MB.
So.... which one do I buy? There are 3 on the Apple site and Amazon. I just need the basics, no fancy pants extras.
Could someone send me a link to the one I should buy?
I think there's a yellow box, a black box and a grey box.
And.... Are they compatible with Intel Macs?
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
the standard version of Office 2004 should be, what you want/need: http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=9460CA8C&nplm=T 9190
If you are qualified for the Student/Teacher version, you can save some money: http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=9460CA75&nplm=T 9188
(at the bottom you can find out, if you qualify for this version).
Either version of Office 2004 works quite well on Intel-Macs, although they are not Universal-Binaries (which will come with Office 2008 in Fall 2007).
You may also have a look at a freeware alternative named NeoOffice: http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php

  • Upgrading to OS10.9.2 I lost my Office 2004 Student Teacher program.  Can I reinstall Office or does 9.2 upgrade no longer supports 2006 Student Teacher?  Tnx,

When upgrading from OS 10.8.6 to 10.9.2 I lost my MS Office 2004 Student Teacher editon software.
This included Word, Excel, Power Point and Entourage.
Is this because 9.2 does not support this older Office program?  Do I need to up grade Office or do I just need to reinstall 2004 Office.
I no longer can enter any of my spreadsheets and its a disaster for me so far.
Can anyone ease my mind?  Thanks.  Jack

Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • Does Office 2004 Student Teacher edition work well with our new MBP?

    Hello All,
I have an older copy of MS Office 2004 for Mac: Student/teacher. Does it run well on our new MBP's?
I also run iWork 09' but need Office for work. I have read online that the newest MS Office is not that good.
    Thanks

Hi,Office 2004 is designed for PowerPC processors, so you have to use Rossetta to have it work with the new mbp, as it is based on Intel processors, and the performance may not be very satisfactory.
Office 2008 is a Universal application and runs well on Intel Macs.

  • Microsoft Office 2004 Student and Teacher Edition

Hi my dyslexia gets me into trouble and I think my Office appts won't work. I had techs from the computer store install Office but told them not to install Power Point (I think. I had looked for it in Finder and it didn't come up with it. I looked in the application Office folder and I didn't see its icon). I got an email that has a Power Point doc so I installed Power Point off the CD. But in doing that I started the complete install because I didn't notice the words "all applications" and when I read that after I dragged the icon onto my Mac HD, I cancelled the installation part way, dragged that icon into the trash and emptied it. Then I started the the install using the install help and completed the process of just choosing the Power Point. Now all 4 applications do not open and I get no response for Entourage at all when choosing its icon, and a message for Word, Power Point and Excel thats says they cannot load the__ shared libraries. Also in the proess of the guided downloading, I checked for updates and came upon the latest that includes other past updates, and read something about Entourage update problems so I downloaded that update then I noticed later that it was included in the newer update (I never installed this single update and put it in the trash and emptied that). I never updated yet the newer updates for Office because of the problems that just arrived. I cannot open any of these programs or even open any docs. I have hundreds of emails that are in Entourage and I hate to loose them. I need simple to understand help because I have problems with understanding technical words. I am intelligent, but not a techie.

Then I started the the install using the install help and completed the process of just choosing the Power Point.
Which is why Word, Entourage and Excel won't open. They're no longer on the hard drive. Follow these steps.
    1) It's prudent to make a backup of your files first. For Entourage, backup the entire "Main Identity" folder in your user account. You'll find it a few levels deep in the Documents folder. Also any Word and Excel documents you have. Putting copies of them in a new folder on the desktop will do.
    2) Use the Remove Office tool on the installation CD to remove all former traces of Office from the hard drive. This will normally not remove your personal files, but step one will save you from disaster if it does.
    3) Reinstall Office from the CD. Use the "Microsoft AutoUpdate" tool in the Applications folder to apply all updates up to the current version. This will only be installed if you use the selective installation application on the CD.
Entourage should then automatically recognize your database in your user account.

  • Problems Installing Microsoft Office 2004 on 10.4.3!

    Hi all,
A friend of mine just purchased 10.4.3 from the Apple Store for use with his G5 (the original single 1.8). My friend is not very skilled with computers, so I have been helping him get 10.4 running.
    • We wrote zeros to his hard drive.
    • We then did a fresh installation.
    • We then ran software update.
    • Apps like Photoshop Elements have installed without problems.
Microsoft Office 2004 (Student and Teacher) will not install using the installer or drag-and-drop.
    • The installer finishes but the Office 2004 apps are not on the Hard Drive!
    • Drag-and-Drop encounters an error (-36 I think) and stops installing.
Obviously, my friend is disappointed that Office will not install on a fresh OS - Please help!

As I Understand you are Recieving an Error when installing Office 2004, which is not allowing you to Complete the installation.
With Error 36 There is only one thing to do, you will need to contact our Replacment Product Department for a new disc, you can contact them by calling 1-800-360-7561
Please let me know if this resolves your issue.
Thank you for using Microsoft Technical Support...
    I guess I'll give a new disk a try -- I'll report back once I've tried that. :~)

  • Microsoft Office 2004 Test Drive Question

    Hello all,
Please forgive me if this is the wrong forum, but I'm looking for help here... or possibly somebody has a forum elsewhere where I might ask this question:
I have recently purchased a brand new Macbook Pro.
    I installed Office 2004 (Student/Teacher Edition).
When I double-click on a document created by Word (from my PC that I transferred over), instead of my "real" Word 2004 opening the document... I get the Office 2004 Test Drive opening it...and a warning saying "I have 29 days remaining until it expires".
My question is: How can I either remove the Office 2004 Test Drive and/or get it so that my document is opened with the "real" Office, instead of the test drive?
As I said, I apologize if this is the wrong forum... but if you can please a) direct me to the correct forum or b) help me out with a link... I'd VERY much appreciate it.
    Thanks very much!

If you installed (used) the Trial version of Office then merely dragging the folder to the Trash won't do the trick. You will instead have to run the Office Uninstaller (in the /Office 2004/Additional Tools/Remove Office/ folder) and completely remove both the Trial and the licensed version of Office including preferences. Then reinstall your licensed version. This is the only sure way of avoiding any conflicts between the two versions.

  • I just updated my iMac to Mountain Lion and now my 2004 Student/Teacher Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, and Excel) won't work. Do I need to update those apps to the Mac 2011 version?

I just installed Mountain Lion on my mid 2007 iMac but now my 2004 Microsoft Student Teacher Word, Excel, and Powerpoint won't open and are x'd out on my dock.Do I need to update to the 2011 Student zoffice version?

Microsoft Office's 2011 version is compatible with Lion and presumably either works with Mountain Lion or an update will make it so.  The problem with this approach is that Office 2011 will "convert" your earlier data files and there lies the rub!  For example, I have the need to weekly open a chart created in Excel 2004, but Excel 2011 trashes the chart in its "conversion."
So I have approached the overall problem differently.
The reason your applications do not work in Mountain Lion is that they were written for the older PowerPC CPU that all Macs used up to 2006.  When Apple made its transition to the Intel CPU, they licensed software that they included in all versions of OS X (from Tiger to Leopard and optionally, Snow Leopard) called Rosetta.
Rosetta miraculously allows PowerPC applications to work on the Intel processor transparently; you do not know it is even present.
The problem is that after 6 years of the transition, Apple's license to use the underlying software expired for OS X Lion and all version thereafter (and it is doubtful that the current owner of the software, IBM, would relicense it, even if Apple were inclined to do so).
So for those of use that need to run Lion, I have offered the option to install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels 7:

    And now Mountain Lion:

I am interested in buying Office 2008 and transferring Excel data from my Powerpc iMac which runs 10.4.11 and Office 2004 student version. I wish to constantly use and update the Excel files. Will I have a conflict?

You shouldn't have a problem, I am running 2008 and all my data from 2004 carried over.  Office 2011 will also run on 10.7.

  • Is mountain lion compatible with old (2004) version of microsoft office for MAc?

I have heard that Mountain Lion is not compatible with old (2004) version of microsoft office for MAc. Is that true?

Can't say I've ever seen such error messages, and I've opened lots of files created back in OS 8. Also many more much older than that from Windows 95 and even MS-DOS.
Lucky for you; unlucky for me that an important Excel 2004 Chart gets corrupted when opened in Excel 2011!
I suspect the problem is in the conversion routine that Microsoft added to Office 2011 to update Excel 2004 files.  How conversant are you historically with converting Excel 2004 files that contain charts to Excel 2011?  Because your experience with OS 8, Windows 95 and even MS-DOS has no relevance on this issue.

You will notice, Kurt, that I based my advice to the OP as "if you are unable or unwilling to upgrade to Microsoft Office 2011..."
Yes, I saw it. But if everyone did what you would expect with your statement, no one would suggest upgrading to Office 2011. Besides, you're the one who stated "unable or unwilling", not the OP.
Are you always this argumentative, or is this my lucky day?
Many people suggest upgrading to Office 2011. I do it frequently in my other "workarounds" type of answers to the Rosetta in Lion/Mountain problem.  I chose not to offer that solution here, and as I expected, someone else, namely you, did!
The problem was that you finished your suggestion with this comment: "Particularly when it isn't really necessary."  Since this statement was not true in my case (it IS necessary for me to continue to use my important Excel 2004 file as well as some other historical files I have; and conceivably could be important to the OP), I posted the correction.
You also made the suggestion that: "...the cost of VM software isn't that much less than just upgrading to Office 2011." While certainly true in the vacuum of the OP asking specifically about Word 2004; when the OP becomes aware that his complete library of PPC applications will fail in Mountain Lion, your suggestion about the relative cost to upgrade may no longer be as relevant.
Lastly: Yes, I commonly state to similar OP's that if they are "unable" (because, for example, they may also have conversion problems with Office 2011, Appleworks 6, Freehand or other programs) or "unwilling" (perhaps they just cannot afford to upgrade all of their PPC apps at this time), that here is an alternative that will keep the status quo available to them, and buy them some more time to consider their options while continuing to use Lion/Mountain Lion and their PowerPC apps.
Is the relevance of my post to the OP's problem (and your reply to my solution) sufficiently clear for you now?

Where do I go to online to download a free trial version of Microsoft Office 2011 Home and Student? I need to enter in an access key because my MacBook Air doesn't have a CD drive.

Look on the MS Office 365 website for links to the download version. You could also buy an External DVD drive that connects by USB port. Any brand will work with your Mac Air. It does not have to have the Apple name on it for it to work on your Air.

  • Microsoft office 2004 for mac installation problem

    Hi there,
I initially download the microsoft office 2004 trial. I bought the student & teacher edition and install it in my macbook. There was a uninstall button on the trial software that I press and I don't know if that removed the trial version. The problem is "this product is license to office 2004 test drive user, my name and product ID number" are all showing initially when you press any of the office 2004 icon. Having the test drive user showing up makes me wonder if the trial version was totally deleted. If the trial version was not deleted, will it slow down the program and how can I remove it without re-installing the full version that I bought.
    Any help is appreciated

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • Design flaw in Microsoft Office 2004 - Anyone can get it for free!

    Hello all.
This is going to sound a bit strange, but I've been in the pub today giving my new MacBook owning friend a lesson in the joys of Mac goodness. One of the best things was discovering that I could use Bluetooth to beam across some of my favourite freeware application from my PowerBook to his MacBook. All small stuff, usually in the 5 - 10 megabyte range. I sent him a solitaire game, some media viewers, all the usual non-Apple things that make a Mac even more useful to run. I know, nothing strange so far, but bear with me.
My friend volunteered the question of whether Bluetooth would time out during the transfer of large files. An experiment was needed. I was also curious to find out if larger applications would beam across and still work. After all, if a 5 megabyte freeware app works when copied from my applications folder to his, would a larger piece of commercialware work as well? I mean, it shouldn't right? As a recent Mac switcher myself (5 happy months) I thought it would be appropriate to try a Microsoft application. I bought my PowerBook second-hand and I inherited a copy of MS Office that I've never used (and never will).
So here is the curious thing. I used Stuffit to compress the entire Microsoft Office 2004 folder. Minus Entourage, which I had already deleted as being surplus to requirements, the SIT file weighed in at a whopping 250 megabytes. I was very impressed to find out that it transferred across in a little over half an hour. No timeout limitation for large file transfers, Macs rock. I was however, extremely disturbed to discover the that unzipped file played perfectly well on my friend's computer. To clarify, by just copying across the entire Microsoft Office 2004 folder he was now in possession of a free, activated, and 100% working copy of the program. Surely this can't be right? I know that piracy is a major issue, and for Microsoft to just allow people to copy across the entire application means that a single copy released on a fileshareing network would be usable by an unlimited number of people potentially.
I would like to stress that I absolutely do NOT endorse piracy in any way. This was just a drunken experiment to see what would happen, and I'm reporting it here so that Microsoft and Apple can close this loophole and make sure that future versions of the application can be protected. This application retails at £350 and a simple copy and paste of the entire folder means it is available free for the pirates out there. It is not fair that some people should get for free what others have to pay a premium rate for.
My friend has deleted the copied program from his computer as neither of us wish to indulge in illegal activity. This was just an accidental discovery made during a casual "what if?" experiment. We did a search on Google (we are still in the pub as I write) and I can't find any mention of this having been found before. I hope the forum admins can bring this to the attention of someone higher up as I'm sure that it will be of great interest. It is bad enough that some people crack open applications for use by the less scrupulous out there, but this application is able to be freely copied by all and sundry. It might as well have a big "steal me" sign posted on the boxes.
Um, I'm guessing that as it is a Microsoft application that it is their mistake right? Just another reason why I am no longer running a Windows computer if this is an example of their attention to detail. It is breathtaking that some people are paying a huge amount of money for a program that can just be copied and pasted between computers.

That is the way Microsoft Office 2004 works. It's a drag and drop install of the folder itself. (Although, it's usually done from the install CD, not someone else's computer.) Any missing support files (not entire applications like Entourage, though) will re-install themselves the first time an Office application is launched. This is how Microsoft designed it, so it would be simple to install and self-repairing. The registration information is saved, somewhere, inside that folder.
If you wanted to alert someone, you should probably tell someone at Microsoft.

  • Updating Microsoft office 2004

I'm trying to download updates for Microsoft office 2004. The automatic updater runs into the same problem. When it gets to the microsoft site and tries to download the update I need I get an error message saying it couldn't find the server. I've gotten that message in both Firefox and Safari. Any ideas?

First off make sure you are using the Office 2004 retail. Some Macs ship with a "Test drive" version of Office which says so on its folder in the Applications folder. These typically can't be updated. Uninstall the Test Drive version first, before installnig the retail Office, so your updater has the correct file to update.
