Which video card for video editing?

I am about to order my first iMac. I've always had MacBook Pros and have never had to choose a video card as I always just got the one that came with the laptop. I will primarlily use the iMac for video editing using FCPX
I do not know what kind of impact the video card has on vdeo editing with FCPX.
I do not play video games and I do not create complex 3D graphics.
Will I notice any better performance if I go for the faster, more expensive video card that is offered for the iMac?

not on edit.
on Im-/Export, a 'faster' GPU with more VRam could make a difference.
but ... 'waiting' 12 or 15minutes? ... is a 20% improvement, but less than a coffee/cigarette/hello-my-dear-texting. Plus,you can do other things meanwhile ...

Which Graphics Card for a 40 inch HDTV LCD or Plasma Monitor for the best value and price?
Hi, I was wondering if I replace my current standard graphics card for a MacPro Early 2008 for a graphics card for a 40" HDTV, which was is the best for the price and value? My current card when used with such a large monitor/ TV isn't very good, I think? So thinking of updating...

This sounds like a price match question. Without knowing all the details, it sounds like a yes for the Westinghouse, but I would encourage you to read the price match policy link here:

If all you care about is 1080p definition and an HDMI input at a $300 price point then this tv should suit your needs. (As a bonus it has 120Hz refresh for smoother action scenes.)http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Westinghouse+-+40%26%2334%3B+Class+-+LCD+-+1080p+-+120Hz+-+HDTV/5772998....

  • Which graphics card for Photoshop CS4

I will be adding a graphics card to my Vista 64 machine which currently has integrated graphics. I normally don't care about 3D performance, so I was looking at the Radeon HD 4550. Please let me know what I should look for in a card if my primary objective is to (1) enable movie playing (HD and blu ray) and (2) speed up Photoshop. The machine has one x16 PCI slot and two x1 slots (it's a Dell Studio).
    Current specs are:
    Intel Q9400 quad core
8GB RAM (this is the max for the motherboard)
    750GB SATA drive

    Hi Curt,
Thank you so much for your reply, the info/advice you have given me is really helpful!!! I think its important that I also keep in mind what I might need to use it for in a couple of years time, which could be video editing and of course who knows what demands newer versions of PS, LR etc will put on the PC. I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and go for the PC that is pushing the absoulte limit of my budget (and a bit extra!) as then I have something with a spec I am not going to out grow for a reasonable period of time - so long as the computer does not give up on me first! The one I am looking at has 256GB mSATA SSD + 2TB SATA hard drive. It also has 16 GB ram.
Thanks again, really apprecaite your help!

  • Which WiFi card for: PowerMac G5 Tower, 1.8 Ghz DP, running OS 10.5.8?

Sorry, I couldn't find an answer to this on the forum and the PDFs ref where the card WOULD fit didn't resemble the inside of the Mac I have
It's an ex-work machine that I'd like to make Wifi for a non-techie friend (already have DLink router for existing PC etc) Which wireless card do I need and which is better? I've been told about USB dongles, Airport Extreme and PCI antenna cards. All very confusing. Basically it needs to be reliable for the non-techie owner , so am not keen to get a cheapo card that will need lots of setting up. Plug 'n' play would be good.
I think the Mac is 2004 vintage and is definitely G5, 1.8 Ghz Dual Processor. Any help asap would be appreciated as I've got to get a card and install it all by the weekend.
    Many thanks,
    Andy

Hi Andrew, Not sure which card, but it may be easier or even cheaper with some of these alternatives...

  • Which eSATA card for QX2 or G-Speed Q?

I'm about to pull the trigger on an OWC QX2 or a G-Speed Q from G-Technology (4-bay, Firmware RAID-5 boxes with Quad interfaces). I think they both use the Oxford 936 chip and therefore should perform identically with any given eSATA card for the Mac Pro.
So, which eSATA card will allow these boxes to perform very well with a 2006 vintage Mac Pro, which of course has the PCI 1.0 bus which has a limited bandwidth per PCI lane... Also, I will attach a 3 additional single spindle drives to the card since I have those drives lying around.
    So, what card???
    Thanks,
    Robert

I wonder why the G-Speed Q (From G-Technology) which uses the same 936 chip is benchmarked at a much slower speed using there $300 RAID card. According to G-Tech "The G-SPEED Q write speeds are about 165MB/s, and the reads are about 215MB/s." with RAID 5.
    Hi,
    I have not tested the G-Speed Q.
I can tell you 936QS based enclosures tend to be very performance sensitive to the model of hard disk installed and the eSATA driver used. This is why performance results can be amazingly different when the 936QS is used with various drives and eSATA controllers.
Its not like a direct connect 4-bay enclosure where you see much less difference in hard disk performance when different 3.5" SATA hard disk models are used.
In my tests, the Hitachi 1TB provided some of the best 936QS performance I have recorded. In addition, FirmTek has optimized the SeriTek/2ME4-E driver version 6.0.0fc18 to enhance 936QS performance. This combination is able to maximize the performance available with the 936QS design.
I hope this information is helpful.

  • Best Graphics Card for Photo Editing

    Hello All,
I am a professional photographer. I currently use Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 4.1. I am in the process of having a new computer built just for editing my photography. The board will be an ASUS P9X79 with an intel Core i7-3820 and 16 GB memory. The technician building the computer would like a recommendation of the fastest and or best graphics card for editing still images.
All of my work is done in RAW from a 5D MII. 21 megapixel.
Processing speed has always been a bottleneck for me and Lightroom 4 has not helped.
Can anyone please recommend the best or fastest graphics card for this system?
    Thank you, Jim

I would focus on your PS CS5 requirments. If you intend on using a wide gamut display at some point I'd give serious consideration to graphics card that will truly support 30 bit display data (10bit/color) in PS CS5/6.There are only a handful of graphics cards that actually support a 30 bit data path with PS CS5/6. • Which Airport Card for a Power MAC G4 w/400mhz?

    Hello Everyone!
Sorry to be a bother but I'm new to the forum & need some help. I'm currently upgrading my Power Mac G4 w/400 mhz & I'm looking to go wireless. I've been looking for the best product to do this but I've become a bit confused. Did Apple make an airport card for my particular model? When I go into the specs, it shows that the system is airport compatible but I do not know which component to use. Can anyone help me out with this one?
    Thanks,

Did Apple make an airport card for my particular model?
That computer takes the original AirPort card or a PCI card or external component which provides wireless access. The AirPort Extreme card is incompatible with it.

  • Which Powermac configuration for photo editing

I am looking for a mac system which is tuned for digital photography. Currently I am using CS2, ACR and iviewpro for raw digital workflow on iMac 1.8 2 gb ram. I am testdriving Adobe's Light Room.
I am now in the market for an upgrade where the iMac will be used as a second computer for the standard household computer business.
Which system would you advice? Please take into account display size, ammount of memory and processor configuration. I am looking for second opinions wrt the sales advice I got from a apple store.
Thanks in advance for your precious time and advice
    Iemke

Well, not knowing what the budget it is makes it a bit tough...? Generically, I would get the fastest PowerMac and as much RAM as I could afford. AND- get dual displays. Get a slower PowerMac if need be. Trust me, dual displays will be much more productive than a single display on a faster machine. It was one of the best things I ever did. I use a LaCie 22 CRT for my images and a 23" ACD for pallets and most everything else. You can have multiple windows of Bridge open. It's a dream. BTW, I do prefer the color of the CRT. It is calibrated and my lab prints match up favorably. The CRT is a bit softer than the ACD. However the ACD is too sharp. Prints fall in between. I much prefer the text one the ACD.
    Good Luck,

  • Which Airport Card For eMac USB2.0

    Hi All
I am just about to purchase a eMac USB2.0 and I am very confused about which type of Airport Card to install. I have read in some places that it takes the original Airport Card and then on this Apple site it says that this model is Airport Extreme ready.
    Which one do I need?
    Many thanks

Every reference I have says its the extreme version.
However, before you buy, find out if the serial number of that eMac falls in the ranges noted in this Apple article:
    http://www.apple.com/sg/support/emac/repairextensionprogram/
A significant number of machines within these ranges suffer from a logic board problem that is impractically expensive to fix unless you have little or no money in the computer. The Apple program that fixed this at no charge expired last summer, so you would be on your own for the significant cost of repair.
The issue affected USB 2.0 eMacs with 1.0 and 1.25 G processors. I've never heard it affecting the later 1.42gHz machines. Hopefully you are looking at a 1.42 eMac, as they are fine machines with "new-enough" video chipsets to support Core Image technology used by OS 10.4 and later.

  • Which graphics card for a G5 Dual 2.7

Hi. I've got a Dual G5 2.7GHz and I'm thinking about upgrading the graphics card. Problem is, I'm not sure which cards will work and how much improvement they will give me. I currently use two 20" cinema displays so the new card will need 2 DVI out ports, or some way of connecting 2 DVI monitors. Currently my G5 has an NVIDIA 9650 card in it which came with the machine. I mainly need extra graphical grunt for games and sims. Can anyone give me some advice as to an upgrade path please ?
    Thanks.

The ATI Radeon X800 XT - Mac Edition is probably your best bang for the buck. It has one DVI and one ADC connector so you'll need the ADC to DVI adapter to drive two DVI monitors.
You can find it at the Apple store.

    Hi,
I would like to add a wireless card to my Mac Pro 2.93ghz (4.1)(early 2009) but im a little unsure of which card is compatible, after searching on the net for info I have these model numbers - Airport Extreme MB988Z/A or MB988ZM/A.

I have an Early '08 Mac Pro running an 8800GT in Slot 1 and a 2600XT in Slot 2.
I got my 2600 for $50 USD and have found it to work very quietly and without fuss. It's 3D performance is a little lacking but I didn't buy it for that.
It installed straight into Slot 2 and requires no additional power cable. I've also the above setup running four 23" Apple Cinema Displays without breaking a sweat.
As for your 7300 predicament, for all intensive purposes, this card does not have an the correct internal ROM required to boot an Early '08 Mac Pro. Whilst I've not tested it, I've no reason to doubt well-informed comments from other members:

  • Which CUDA card for a Mac Pro?

I've recently started using Premiere Pro CS6. My current setup does not make use of the Mercury playback engine.
Can anyone recommend an appropriate CUDA graphics card that would allow this?
Ideally I don't want to spend more than £300.
Here is a breakdown of my setup:
    Mac Pro 4,1:
    2 x 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (2 processors, 8 cores)
    32GB RAM (DDR3 1066Mhz)
ATI Radeon HD 4870 (512MB VRAM)
Black Magic Decklink HD Extreme 3D+
    x4 3TB 7200rpm Internal hard drives (i.e. 1 root drive and x3 for footage)
OS X Version 10.8 Mountain Lion
    Thanks.

Ok, everything went in/installed ok. A couple of worrying moments when initially I couldn't work out how to release the old graphics card... thank you Apple for putting a release button on the fan! Then the text editor hung whilst adding my new card to Premiere's Cuda list. But a force quit solved that and the settings held.
But when I finally rebooted and opened up Premiere, sure enough the Mercury GPU hardware option was there in the Playback settings.
So excellent news...... yes almost. I've been playing around with putting various effects on clips and trying to spot the difference, which should be obvious, right? Well it's not. So far I haven't found anything that it's made a difference on. I've tried switching the GPU option on and off and applying the same cluster of effects to duplicate clips and the render times are the same, as is the playback smoothness in the programme monitor (ie the same degree of jitter before a render).
In fact worse than that in the 30 mins or so I've been playing around Premiere has crashed twice when saving/closing the project. Possibly this is down to all the preview files being deleted each time I switch the MPE from GPU to software only (and vice versa), but who knows.
I guess I need to spend more time with it set only to GPU to ensure it's stable. But can anyone suggest a test I can do where I can definitely see a difference the GPU option is making vs. software only?

  • Which Graphics card for OpenGL 3D Support? (Mac)

I have an earlier 2008 MacPro with a Radeon HD 2600 XT Card. Adobe says it's supported but all 3D options are grayed out. The menu is grayed out and open GL is grayed.
Do I need a new card? If so, what cards are Mac users using for good 3D?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
What version of Ps Extended do you have or wish to use? For Ps CS6 Extended the minimum GPU VRAM requirement is 512MB, which explains greyed out menu items if you're running CS6.
Recommended Ps CS6 Extended GPU VRAM is 1GB or greater. You'll also benefit buying as much RAM as you can afford.
Both of those cards should work with the CS6 3D features. However, you may want to look at newer cards from nVidia and ATI to see if they also work with the '08 MacPro running 10.8.2.

    steve

  • Which graphics card for G4 MDD and 30" display?

    Hi folks,
I would really appreciate any help with this as I am confused by what graphics cards are out there. I have a G4 MDD dual 867, 1.75GB RAM, which currently has an NVIDIA GeForce4MX (32MB VRAM) in its AGP slot and an old ATI card (32MB VRAM) in a PCI slot. Each card is driving a 17" Dell CRT display. Not brilliant for a freelance illustrator but it does the job for now....
I really want to get a 30" Cinema display (I am a scientific illustrator working digitally for print, using Photoshop & Illustrator mainly) but I don't know what graphics card I can get that will work in my Mac (it has 3 free PCI slots, but not PCI Express) and reliably support the 30" display at a suitable resolution. I have been trying to research this but have got stumped by the options. I asked in the London Apple Store but they implied I would be better off getting a whole new Mac... rather not spend quite that much money at the moment.
Or would I be better off getting two 23" displays? Which cards can run these in my Mac?
Any help gratefully received - thank you!
    Debbie.

    Hi Debbie-
You can support a 30" Cinema Display with a graphics card that has a dual link DVI output. The ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC and Mac version has a dual link DVI and will work in your 4x AGP MDD.
The 9600 has two DVI ports, so it will also allow use of two 23" Cinema Displays, without adapters.
