Which video effects for vhs lp mode?

a single vhs tape containing six hours of video is captured to mpg format. as you can imagine, the quality is lower than one might like. studying every video effect offered by pp4 would take me a lifetime. can you suggest a few effects i might look at for improving the quality of this low quality video?
--david (neophyte pp4 user)

Craig's right though, I know it's a pain and will take a lot more HD space, but if you can capture as DV, make your changes, and then export to mpg the results will be much better. I made DVD's of three old VHS tapes that were multi-generation copies and decades old. They were concert videos shot from the audience with VHS, and they had faded out terribly over the years. I mostly just did some sharpening and adjusted the color, gamma, light, and contrast. I also deinterlaced with TMPGEnc while doing the mpg conversion. They all came out quite a bit better. The bigger challenge was restoring the sound.

  • What video effect for color desaturation? (e.g. Hue/Saturation in Photoshop)

    Hi all,
What is the Premiere equivalent of the HUE/SATURATION adjustment layer found i Photoshop ? I am trying to slightly desaturate (about -53%) my movie to give it a more gritty look. I could easily get the look I wanted in Photoshpo by going to NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER-->HUE/SATURATION.
Is there a similar approach for Premiere? In the Video effects folder somewhere? Thanks!

Use the "Fast Color Corrector and "Saturation".

  • How to save video effects for title templates?

I just started playing with Premiere Pro CS4.
I have a beginners question, hope you don't mind:
In my video I use a third-low title to tell the name of songs played. I put them in a bin, basically just copy the first one and change the names in the copies. But when I add them to the timeline I noticed it looks much more professional to add a video-effect where opacity goes from 0 to 100% in a second, and then the other way at the end.
My problem is that I seem to have to do this over and over again, for each title. Is there a simple way to make one title-template, put it on the timeline, add video-effects, and then save that and make copies just changing the text in time-line? That would save me a lot of work, and the video-effects would be consistent in looks and timing.
Thanks for any hints or tips for this newbie.
    /Ronny

  • Missing video effects for iMac g5 w/ external iSight cam

I have a G5 iMac with an external iSight camera and I'm wondering why I do not have the option for video effects while using photo booth and iChat. My wife's macbook does include video effects, so my first bet is that Apple decided not to give me the option with my OS upgrade. Anyone have a way to remedy this without spending over 2K again?

DP, he has Photo Booth and Front Row, its the effects in iChat that he can't use, and I do think that's an intel function.

  • Which video card for Aperture and dual monitors?

I have a G5 dual 2.0 with a GeForce FX 5200 video card that is driving one 23" Cinema display. I need to upgrade my card per the specs to run Aperture. I have also been thinking of getting a second 23" display. Can someone recommend the best video card for me. I know very little about video cards and have been reading a lot this morning. Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Dave;
No. PCIx and PCIe or PCI Express are not the same thing.
PCIx is an extended or slight sped up version of PCI. While PCIe is a switched bus structure instead.
Hence they are not the same. That is what all of the big news is about Apple has made the leap over to PCI Express.

  • Video effects for a horror/thriller trailer

I'm working on recutting a trailer as a different genre and I was wondering how to do a couple of effects.  How do you do the white flash on the screen(not a dip to white transition but in the middle of the clip) and the flash that shows a negative of the original image like you see in some horror/thriller trailers?

    Hi owiseone,
Here's how I would construct the effect.
    Create the "negative image" effect.
Apply the Invert effect: Video Effects > Channel > Invert
Try different Channel Options. I chose "Lightness."
Desaturate the colors on the negative image.
    Apply a Fast Color Corrector
    Take Saturation down to 0.
Adjust the Input Levels slider to taste
Make the effect flash on and off with the original clip by using the Strobe effect, or by manually adding the effect to Add Edits.
    First, do the following
Copy paste the clip to V2.
Remove effects from the clip on V1.
Do either of the following to the clip on V2:
Apply the Strobe Light effect: Video Effects > Stylize > Strobe Light and adjust parameters to taste.
With the Razor tool or the Add Edit keyboard shortcut, create splices that are several frames long, create them either the same length, or random durations. Delete portions of the clip between the add edits.
Play back the effect and adjust parameters until you're happy with the effect.
Set up a range to play In to Out
    Enable Loop Playback
Adjust parameters in any of the effects as they play In to Out.
    Hope that helps!

  • More than one video effect for same clip?

Is it possible to apply more than one video effect to the same clip? I know this could be done in previous versions of iMovie, but I can't seem to figure out how to accomplish this task in '09!!
    Thanks!

In general, no, you cannot do two video effects at the same time.
However, black and white is a special case, because you can achieve this using Video Adjustments.
You can select Aged Film and then adjust to Black and White in Video Adjustments.
Try setting the Saturation slider all the way to the left (0%)
Then, move the Contrast slider to the right until it is around 50%.

  • Which video card for Mac G4?

I have Mac G4 that has been upgraded to Ram 1536ram, Cpu-PowerPC7400. I have a17" lcd studio display. I would like to know what would be a good video card for my Mac. I have been advised to get a ATI Radeon 9200, would this be a reliable card and give me the power I need with graphics?

Be sure to go ATI, I am not very happy with the results of my Nvidia card; on that note, don't let the amount of VRAM fool you like it did me, I'd be happier with a 128mb ATI card than my 256 Nvidia card; its just not fast enough for intense graphics (mostly gaming)

  • Which Video Card for MDD - Nvidia or ATi Radeon?

Mac nVidia GeForce 4 Ti 4600/Ti4600 128MB Video Card G4
    BRAND NEW
I saw this item on eBay, and it looks like a good deal, but elsewhere on this forum someone said the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro was preferred for the Mirror Drive Door model.
The NVidia seems to have the best price. Assuming either are compatible (need AGP) which would be recommended, and why?
My present card is 64MB. I would hope that one with 128MB would improve performance with my Final Cut Express and 3D programs, such as Carrara and SketchUp, and give better results with an LCD monitor (and the card supports dual monitors, I think)
    many thanks,
    K.

    Hi Keith-
The biggest problem with the Geforce4 Ti is lack of Core Image support. This is of major importance in OS X, important to some graphics/video editing applications and is indicative of a GPU that is more powerful than the cards that don't support Core Image.
The Radeon 9800 Pro is a card that supports Core Image, and does so with ease.
For applications, Quartz Extreme is a given, but Open GL is also of concern. The Radeon 9800 Pro scores higher in Open GL benchmarks than the Geforce4 Ti.
As for 3D, shaders are of importance. The Radeon cards often offer better shader support than the Geforce cards. This is true when comparing the Geforce4 Ti and the Radeon 9800 Pro.
Not only is the architecture of the Radeon 9800 Pro better, 8 pixel pipelines vs. 4, but the drivers for the Radeon are superior. In fact, it is a gamers secret in some applications, to use Radeon shader drivers to get better performance out of their Geforce cards.
Not to be overlooked, but the amount of VRAM is not as important as the GPU clock speed, and the memory (VRAM) speed. The Geforce4 Ti has a GPU of 300mhz, and DDR VRAM at 325mhz (effective 650mhz).
The Radeon 9800 Pro has a GPU clocked at 378mhz, and DDR VRAM clocked at 337.5mhz (effective 675mhz).
Again, the Radeon 9800 Pro is superior in architecture.
Both cards can support dual displays, both having a DVI and a VGA port. A big difference is if you use OS X Leopard. Again, the Radeon card stands supreme, with many OS 9, or "legacy" Geforce cards loosing dual display ability in Leopard. This problem is often reported here.
If, however, the majority of your work is in OS 9, the Geforce4 Ti is a better card, with better native support +in OS 9+. The Radeon 9800 Pro came much later than the last OS 9.2.2, so it doesn't have the benefit of native 3D drivers. It works fine as a basic graphics card in OS 9, but doesn't support accelerated 3D as well as the Geforce4 Ti.
As for price, since we're comparing flashed cards, the Radeon 9800 Pro costs the same (as the Geforce4 Ti) from a very competent, reliable seller, though you have an extra $10 in shipping.

    not with iM08/09..
for iMHD6 there are $$ plug-ins avail, which add this to iMovie..
consider usage/purchase of FinalCutExpress for elaborated editing and post production ..

  • Which Video Card for G5 dual 2ghz?

Would there be a significant difference between running Aperture with the ATI RADEON X800 Mac Edition - 256MB 8X AGP Pro Video Card and running it with the ATI RADEON 9800XT 8X AGP 256MB Video Card?
There is a big difference in cost.

my G5 is like yours and i do occasionally get it ... not nearly like i did with my old card (9650) but more frequently than my MBP (which is virtually NEVER) ...
the X800XT is the BEST card that you can get for an AGP G5 ...
barefeats.com has test results about this card, but that won't give you your real world experiences ... my experiences are positive, very positive and i work with 5D RAW files ... ~12MB ...
there are a lot of threads in this forum where people give their experiences with the X800XT ...

  • Which video card for 24-inch iMac?

I am not a gamer... is there any reason for me to get the 7600 card over the 7300 in the 24-inch iMac? Thanks.

    Hello,
I am not a gamer... is there any reason for me to get
the 7600 card over the 7300 in the 24-inch iMac?
    Thanks.
If you are not playing games, then either card will be fine.
But, the better card will improve almost any program that displays a lot of graphics, animations, or video to the screen.
So, if you do any video editing, graphical animation work, drawing, 3D art, or anything else where fluid video and fast processing of graphical information is important, then you'll appreciate the higher-end card.
If all you are doing is e-mail, web-browsing, and office related tasks, then you probably don't need it.
But, consider that it is a one-time upgrade. So, if you think that your needs could change, then perhaps you should get the upgrade to help "future-proof" your computer.
On the 24-inch iMac, the video card is a portable / laptop-type video card that is installed in a socket. So, it is removable and upgradeable later. But, it will cost you more to replace it later than you'll pay in the price difference now. And, those cards are not exactly available everywhere (though they may be in the future).
The video cards on the other iMac models are not upgradeable at all. They are permanently embedded into the main logic board.
    I hope this helps.

  • Which video card for video editing?

I am about to order my first iMac. I've always had MacBook Pros and have never had to choose a video card as I always just got the one that came with the laptop. I will primarlily use the iMac for video editing using FCPX
I do not know what kind of impact the video card has on vdeo editing with FCPX.
I do not play video games and I do not create complex 3D graphics.
Will I notice any better performance if I go for the faster, more expensive video card that is offered for the iMac?

    not on edit.
on Im-/Export, a 'faster' GPU with more VRam could make a difference.
    but ... 'waiting' 12 or 15minutes? ... is a 20% improvement, but less than a coffee/cigarette/hello-my-dear-texting. Plus,you can do other things meanwhile ...

  • Which video size for webpage background?

Hi, my client was interested in having a video run full screen, as background of a webpage, similar to this:
    http://www.shutterstock.com/video/landing/beach
I have never worked on a video project made for the web (other than YouTube), so I was unsure about the size to use for the project/ the size and type to export as from Premiere.
The client wants to use several stock videos. On Shuttershock, you have three options of size for downloading the video as 1)Web 2)SD (852 x 480)  3)HD (1920 x 1080)
My first inclination was to use the Web size (due to bandwidth, etc), but it's only 426x240. I was afraid it'll show as poor quality if set up as the page's entire background. Ideally, something like HD would be great visually, but wouldn't the size of the video be too much to handle as the background of a  webpage (not sure if it's going to be implemented within the html, but I'd imagine so)?
I don't know much about webpage building or anything, so any information would be helpful! Thanks!

The width of the video should match the width of the website page.
eg 960px is a common width for site pages.
    Ask the site designer.

  • How can I install or download video effects for keying chrome?

pudieran ayudarme a instalar en el final cut pro los efectos de video para cromar

If you are talking about the chroma key effect, also known as green screen, this is already available in FCP X - and an excellent one. It is called the "Keyer" effect. Just drag the effect onto the green screen clip and, in many cases, nothing else is required. If you need adjustments, then the flexibility and the power is immense.
In the example below I just took a sample video available online and dragged the keyer effect. Without any adjustments, I got a great key. Of course, getting a great key depends a lot on the quality of the green screen clip (even lighting on the green screen, good separation between the talent and the screen and more). But the keyer effect in FCP X is indeed excellent.
