Which video mode?
I just started using my new macbook and love it! I traded in from a continual iMac user to a mobile laptop now and am completely happy. My biggest worry was going from 24" to 17", but I hardly notice anymore with the great screen resolution of the macbook pro.
Ok, on to the question...the computer is running really fast and very capable. I mostly use it plugged in and rarely remove it from an external power source. Will there be a significant boost in performance if I switch over to the dedicated video, or will the wear/tear of the computer be too great? Right now I mostly surf web and do photography on it. I am waiting for delivery of FCS 3 and will get back into HD video editing when it arrives. So far though I am happy with the performance of the integrated chip and was wondering what the difference might be.
Thanks,
"D"
Thanks, for the quick reply. I think I will definitely keep it in the "lower" mode when not doing my video tasks. I spent the last two days with it on the dedicated and have noticed that it does get a bit hotter and I actually heard the fan for once. (although not very loud at all). I did some video conversions of downloaded TV shows to put on my PSP Go and I gained about 3~5 minutes with the dedicated card. (~20min vs. ~25 min)

Monitor says VIDEO MODE NOT SUPPORTED after changing display settings
HELP! I am about to have a nervous breakdown with my mac mini! I hooked up the mac to my Philips LCD via DVI. No problem at all. But because the screen is only 15" I wanted to play around with the display settings a bit. So I changed the resolution from it's original 1204x768 to the one higher (not sure of numbers) and to my HORROR, I now can't get any picture at all - it says "VIDEO MODE NOT SUPPORTED". I have tried everything I can think of. I have rest the P-RAM, I have unplugged all cables, plugged the back in again, I bought the mac into work and hooked it up to my monitor and changed the resolution back to 1024x768 which is what it was on originally and that STILL didn't work. I can see the Apple logo and then it goes black and comes up with the error message. HELP! What am I doing wrong - I can't believe one click of a mouse button has rendered my display useless!!!
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Try booting the mini without the display connected, and then, once the system is running, connect the display. This will often force the system to default to a low resolution, and then correctly detect the display when it is connected.
If that doesn't help, with the display connected, boot into safe mode (hold the shift key down when starting up) and once the system is running, change the resolution to 1024x768, and ensure the correct refresh rate is selected. Rebooting normally ought then to give you a good display.
If all else fails, boot into safe mode with the display connected, and then in the Finder's file menu, use the 'find' option to search for 'windowserver' (no quotes). You should get 2 or 3 results, including one with a string of alphanumeric characters. Move all of them to the trash and restart normally. -
Video exposure not working in all 3 video modes new iphone 6 Plus ios 8.1
Bug 1. In video mode, exposure does not automatically brighten in darkly lit areas - then when you touch the screen to focus and try and use the sun slider for upping or lowering the exposure, you have to swipe it many, many times to go a short distance, then IT ONLY WORKS TO DARKEN THE EXPOSURE, IT DOES NOT LIGHTEN IT IN ALL 3 VIDEO MODES. It works fine in Photo mode. Go to this video at :54 to see it working properly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tehcNa3ecs4#t=75
Bug 2: Slo-Motion videos will play back on computers in slow motion ONLY if the base frame rate is set to 60 fps and the Slo-mo speed is set to 240fps. With any other settings the computer (both win and mac) play the video back at full speed.
Especially with bug 1, can any of you check your phone to see if sliding your finger up will brighten the image while in any of the 3 video modes?Hi,
I'm having also having game sound issues the game music and sounds just go completely quiet in iOS 8.1. Sometimes it'll just be completely quiet and others I'll have game music and sounds and partway through the game I'll lose audio. It's not the side lock/mute button either which I checked.
It's happening in two different games: Shadowgun:Deadzone and Modern Combat 5.
I have that side button above the volume set to toggle mute and I tried changing it to lock rotation instead to see if that made a difference which it did not. I have to kill the game and relaunch it to get the game audio working again. -
Video mode not supported - after installing Lion
Hi All,
I installed the new Lion OS on my Mac Mini, all went great and clean.
But,
after 2 days of playing with the new OS cool new features I shutdown the Mac Mini and a day later when I started it my TV (Philips HDMI) could not recognized the video format and a message from my TV said "Video Mode Not Support" (I use the HDMI output to an HDMI port on my TV)
I went to my apple reseler and they reset my PRAM.
When I plugged it again at home it was working again.
Then I restarted it to check all is good... and again "Video Mode Not Supported"
It never happen with OS X Snow leopard. so I guess something is not working as it need to on the new Lion version.
I'm not sure if there is a workaround until Apple will release a fix but if someone know how to fix it, ill be happy to know...
thanks
the hard part is that I dont have a wired keyboard or another display so I must go to Apple to get it solve each time it happens
EranHi Markus.
Im trying the update software once in a while but still nothing... I'm keeping my MacMini up and runing cus I know that if i will shout it down it will not come back with the right display driver.
anyhow, it did happend once that I shut it down and then it didnt work again after it came back on, so I played with it a little, i took it out of the power outlet and try a few clicks on startup like alt ctrl P and R and cmd + F1 and few other thing and after a few tries it did work... I have now idea why and what actually made it work again but one thing I can say its that the new Lion version have anything it needs in order to work curectly the problem is that somewhere along the startup process (and now im gussing) the OS select a wrong driver for the attached display (in our case Philips) and send a video format to the display that cant be recognaized by the display.
I realy hope pple will issue a fix to this problem soon!! cus in adition to that I have some zoom issues too which im not sure where it is coming from and if it have to do with our issue.
Anyway we all hope it will be solve soon.
Have a good one... Eran -
Hello all,
I posted about this problem a while ago but now I have more information.
6.5 SP2 IR1.
The problem: Booting from CD results in a video mode with far more lines and
column than booting PXE. PXE is always 80x25, on many different hardware
types. I want it to be like the CD.
Theoretically, the video mode is controlled by the vga= parameter on the
kernel's command line. For PXE, the kernel command line comes from <imaging
server>\sys\tftp\cmds, various files therein. Here are the contents of a
typical file:
KERNEL boot/linux
APPEND initrd=boot/initrd vga=0x314 install=tftp://$TFTPIP/boot
rootimage=/root PROXYADDR=$PROXYADDR TFTPIP=$TFTPIP splash=silent
PXEBOOT=YES mode=5
Notice the vga= parameter.
I can modify this vga parameter any way I like, without effect. I have
tried:
- removing the parameter entirely
- setting it to ask
- setting it to vga_ask
- setting it to single-digit numbers e.g. 1, 2
- setting it to other 0x3nnn options
- setting it to extended
It should be possible for anybody to replicate this simply by changing the
vga parameter in one of your CMD files and booting that particular PXE
option. I suggest using "ask" as it is the one that would give the most
visibly obvious evidence of working or not working.
The boot loader for PXE appears to be linld.com. So, I took my PXE
materials and Novell's linld (to ensure same version) and ran them from DOS.
When I run them from DOS, the vga= parameter DOES have an effect; it behaves
exactly as it should.
So, the situation appears to be that linld launched via PXE ignores the vga
parameter while linld launched manually from DOS does not, on the same
hardware.
Working with linld under DOS yielded some interesting information. The text
files specifying the kernel command line parameters for PXE are not actually
in anything remotely like the format linld requires. Having KERNEL and
APPEND keywords is more characteristic of other boot loaders. If you run
linld without parameters under DOS, it gives you very terse command line
information, which is as follows:
LINLD v0.97
Syntax:
LINLD [image=<file>] [initrd=<file>] [vga=vgamode] [cl=<kernel cmdline>]
vgamode: ask,extended,normal or dec/oct/hex number
Use quotes: "cl=..." if you need spaces in cmdline
Use cl=@filename to take cmdline from file
So compared to the CMD file provided for PXE, what linld would really want
is this:
linld image=boot/linux initrd=boot/initrd vga=0x314 [email protected]
where params.txt would contain:
install=tftp://$TFTPIP/boot
rootimage=/root
PROXYADDR=$PROXYADDR
TFTPIP=$TFTPIP
splash=silent
PXEBOOT=YES
mode=5
(It's worth noting that things are actually even slightly more complicated,
because the variables used in the CMD file (e.g. $PROXYADDR) don't actually
work; I have not found any way to use variables on the command line.)
All this tells me that before Novell launches linld, it is internally
processing the contents of these CMD files and spitting out a command line
that linld can really work with. My experience indicates that the vga
parameter is being incorrectly handled in this process.
I cannot figure out where the DOS environment that must exist during the PXE
boot process is coming from. (There must be a DOS environment, because
linld is a DOS Linux launcher.) It was easy to tell with the old preworx
materials, because you could see the .bin files which were nothing but
images of DOS boot floppies; it was even possible to open them in
third-party PXE utilities. I see no comparable files in the current boot
materials. The only other interesting file is loadlin.dnx, but I suspect it
is not involved because the old preworx process had DNX files as well and
they served a different purpose. Consequently I can't look at what is
happening when linld is launched, so I can't get any further in trying to
figure out the problem.
I would be very interested to know whether anybody out there can get their
PXE materials to respond sensibly to vga=ask.
If you can, I'd be interested to know the dates and times of all the backend
NLMs, in case my problem is due to incorrect updating/version mismatch.
If anybody can shed light on the innards of what happens when linld is
launched during PXE boot, I would love to know.
Thanks,

Nokia 808 Video mode - Jerking problem
The Jerking only happen when video mode happen on all setting 1080p,720p,360p. So I guess someone really happen in the hardware itself. Yes I tried touch screen zoom in this video and also volume button in the middle of the video. Both having the jerking 2 to 3 times starting from 1/3 of the zooming.
Zoom function is work perfectly find on photo taking mode tested on 8mp 5mp 2mp.
I have taken a sample here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=kYsYaQRkrYw
I don't think its normal to have the jerk. Is my set having problem?ok guys. I had sent my set to Nokia service centre for repaired. It factory reset everything and upgrade to FP2. Now the camera looks smoother I notice video stablisations 'on' will cause the shaking of video zoom.
On video mode ,the jerking problem is back.
To fix the problem I try to go to picture mode and off the stablisation and test swype the zoom afew times and back to video mode the problem is gone.
So the problem is:
It will jerk everytime I try to zoom in video mode. Picture mode not so obvious since it zoom very fast and don't takes video. Only video mode will be affected.
temporary solution found
go to picture mode and off the stablisation and test swype the zoom afew times and back to video mode the problem is gone for a while.
If i try to use the zoom often like 30times or more, somehow it triggle it to cause the jerking and have to disable stablisation and go picture mode and swype zooming afew times which somehow will recover from the unstable zooming. back to video mode and test it should be ok now.
Is anyone out there having the same issue too? -
IPhone 4 Video Mode image is larger than camera mode. Normal or Bad?
Hey there, im using an iphone 4 White. I start to browse through my device.
But something caught my eyes. Which is the video Mode.
So this how it goes, when i view my device in camera mode everything is normal.
But i switch to video mode, the image became large. Its like the device automatically zoom in..
Becaus of this, each time im taking a video, i need to take a step back..
So what im asking now is, is there any chances that it can be fix... For what i know, when im using my iphone 3gs everything works fine.
So Do help me find a solution to my curiousity.. Thank You.I'll try to give you an explanation; I hope it's clear.
When taking a photo the iphone uses the full camera sensor (2592 pixels by 1936 pixels).
Which gets the full wide view of the lens.
In order to record video the iphone appears to only use the middle of the sensor to record (1280 pixels by 720 pixels); and it ignores the pixels around it.
Which then cuts down the field of view by almost half; and that looks like it has zoomed in.
Have a look at my diagram, red is the photo mode, blue is video mode:
This is a limitation of the hardware, as it might not get faster data from the sensor to allow the camera to shoot higher resolution, or a wider field of view.
It actually allows the iphone camera to not have as apparent aliasing issues, but certainly lowers the field of view.
Other cameras can "skip" lines to record video.
This allows for much wider field of view, but it does introduce pronounced aliasing issues (as information is "lost" inbetween the lines).
So this probably won't be fixed in the iPhone 4; although video was "added" to the older iphones by developers, it isn't likely to be that easy on the iphone4.
But you will probably hear of a higher pixel count camera in the iPhone 5, and it will possibly be able to take higher resolution video; but in a similar way it will probably only use part of the sensor.
I hope this makes sense? -
Image capture from avi vfw device can't find video modes
Hello
Here my issu, i have implemented image capture from a video device using jmf 2.1.1e performancepack, using a webcam everything is fine but when i use the video capture source i want to use i can only work with format 720x480 pal and i require 720x576 pal.
jmf seem not to reconize video format from this source, but the video is correcty displayed and image correctly captured. I'm surprised it is half working:decoding&render is ok to but not format choice.
I have check it is not because i'm in ntsc mode (ntsc is 720x480) because my analogic source is pal and color are correct (if with device software i change to ntsc mode i have a black&with but using jmf i'm in color so i'm in pal mode)
Difference bettween the webcam and my device is that my device is an avi encoder so in jmf webcam is javax.media.format.YUVFormat and my device com.sun.media.format.AviVideoFormat
i have tried many thing:
install codec pack (divx6, another codec pack)
try to use Fobs4JMF
register in JMStudio IBMdecoder, jffmpeg
Tanks for any help
the device support many configuration UYVY 235x288 352x576 .... 720x576 but JMF offer only 1 video mode for this device.
here in jmf my capture device info:

Changing virtual console video mode timings
I’ve been trying to figure out how to tweak the video timing for virtual consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1 to F6). I’m pretty sure KMS (kernel mode-setting) is running; the VCs are at 1280 × 1024 resolution and the Nouveau kernel module is running.
My motivation is that I have an LCD where the default timings (that apparently come from EDID information from the monitor itself!) aren’t handled perfectly by the monitor. In X, I am reducing the “front porch” by 8 dots using xrandr and this gives a correct image, at least while I am using X:
O=DVI-I-1
# Horiz. values from EDID: 1280 1328 1440 1688
xrandr --newmode metho 108 1280 1320 1432 1680 1024 1025 1028 1066
xrandr --addmode "$O" metho
xrandr --output "$O" --mode metho
I am looking for a way to do the equivalent to the other virtual text consoles. I’ve read about a video kernel parameter for setting the resolution, but I haven’t tried it because I haven’t seen any indication you can set the timing with it. I have tried playing with the “fbset” command which mentions some timing settings, but they don’t seem to have any effect.
I’ve also tried making a simple C program to call some libdrm routines like below, but I’m really just stabbing in the dark. This program kind of did what I wanted, but when I switch to another virtual console, the video mode is reverted; even when I switch back to the original console my changes remain undone until I rerun my program.
#include <xf86drmMode.h>
drmModeCrtcPtr crtc = drmModeGetCrtc(drm, crtc_id);
drmModeModeInfo mode = crtc->mode;
mode.hsync_start -= 8;
mode.hsync_end -= 8;
mode.htotal -= 8;
int ret = drmModeSetCrtc(drm, crtc->crtc_id, crtc->buffer_id,
crtc->x, crtc->y, &conn_id, 1, &mode);
drmModeFreeCrtc(crtc);
I fear I am stepping into rather specialised territory, but any clues might be helpful. Even a way to hack or fake the EDID information might make me happy.grey wrote:Are you using a login manager?
Yea i was using gdm, i don't know what i did, but it seems to work just fine now. -
Iphone 5 small purple spot when using back camera, not showing in video mode
Hi all,
Had taken some pictures this week in the street and wasn't noticing anything major. Tonight I needed to take some pictures here at home and I noticed on one picture a smallish weird spot. Went back to the place I took it to make sure it wasn't there (on the floor) but it wasn't.
I then proceeded with using the camera and I can see the spot stays there wherever I move with it. When I zoom, the spot zooms away with it making it possible for a clear picture. When I put the video mode on, there's no spot whatsoever. When I use the front camera, there is no spot as well.
As it doesn't show up in video mode, I'm assuming it has nothing to do with the lens but maybe more software/hardware or iOS related, or am I wrong?
Is there anything to be done about this? From what I found online people said to turn off the phone and back on, tried it to no avail.
Can always take it back to the shop but I'm assuming this will make it be sent back to apple repair centers etc. so it might take a while to get it back for a relatively simple issue, nothing that can be done any other way?I have the same issue - perhaps not exact but extremely similar. In photo mode, there is a small purplish speck, which I initially thought as dust or something, and of course it ends of in photos taken. However, this speck is not present in video mode, meaning there is no dust, but some sort of artifact on the photo processor or something. Either way, itsa product defect - I plan on seeing if Apple will support this and replace thephone.....

Just did pacman -Syu for the first time in a long time.
Using lilo.
Lilo boots fine and starts unpacking the kernel in the "normal" video mode.
However, as soon as the kernel takes over, the video mode switches to a large mode (don't know which one) where most of the text is actually off the bottom of the screen. Almost like the kernel thinks it's in the "normal" mode, but the video card jumped into a different mode. I'm not sure about that theory, though.
I'm still able to login and startx. But the console mode is nearly useless.
I tried adding vga=ask to my lilo.conf
It asks and I reply but the kernel (or hardware) still jumps into a useless mode.
I tried typing vga=normal at the lilo command line... same deal.
Any thoughts? theories?
Just for reference is there a way to revert back to my old kernel or did pacman -Syu change too much to bother with that?
thanks for helping an old newbie
TheGippack! another clue
/sbin/lilo reports this:
/proc/misc: No entry for device-mapper found
Is device-mapper driver missing from kernel?
Failure to communicate with kernel device-mapper driver.
I hadn't noticed that before.
That's probably another problem that I need to work.
any help? -
Hi...
I just bought a Canon Vixia HF R300 camcorder. It looks like it gives me a choice of two recording modes AVCHD or MP4. I will be uploading onto a year old Mac Mini with the Lion Operating system and increased ram. I will be editing in iMovie '11 then uploading to You Tube. Which recording mode should I use? Obviously I'd like to get the best quality but I also want it to show well on You Tube. What do you think? Thanks for the help. BillHi
What program can you use to convert AVCHD to a DVD format?
Share to File (in iMovie) - AND AS 480p - NOT Higher as DownScaling will be done badly.
Use this file in iDVD or Roxio Toast™ or what DVD Authoring program You've got.
To make a VIDEO-DVD You must use a DVD Authoring program - to get the right compression format AND Structure - It is a MUST.
There are free alternatives - but resulting DVD hasve been far from what quality iDVD (and Toast™) will deliver.
To get best possibly DVD - also this counts.
- DVD brand used - I only Verbatim
- DVD type used - I only DVD-R Single layer (4.7Gb)
(DVD+R works for many and DVD-R/W usually don't work OK and Double Layer also are a problem to it self)
- BURN SPEED - I set this as low possibly (usually x2)
- Free Space on Start-Up Hard Disk - MATTERS - I never go less than 25Gb
Good Luck

Which video crd's are compatible with the H8-1414
Does anyone know Which video crd's are compatible with the H8-1414
Hi,
The H8-1414 has the AMD 7450 video card which is a good video card for an UEFI enabled PC with a 300 watt power supply.
A higher performing video card that will run in UEFI mode would require a bigger power supply and then there would be numerous cards depending on your application requirements.

Cannot fast forward in music video mode. How can I accomplish this
Cannot fast forward in music video mode. How can I accomplish this. Cannot rewind either. Am I missing something? If I change the Music Video to TV Show or Movie can both rewind or fast forward. For now all concert videos are in Movies, which might be the right place for them, but kinda weird Itunes does this.
I am by no mean an expert and I'm sure there are easier ways to accomplish this... however one way is to do something like this:
-Use selection tool to select all blue background, soften the edges of the selection then delete the selection.
-Here you will have a white background and dull looking image with not the greatest edges.
-Zoom waaaay in and use a softer eraser brush on the edges.
-Use various sharpening, brightening, white levels adjustments to make your image prettier.
-Pay attention to the diamond, select the diamond with a selector tool and sharpen, etc. Consider adding a layer to add additional detail to just the diamond.
-Consider using the clone stamp to smooth out any markings on the silver tone band. -
