Which views are the most important for a dba admin?
Hi I am new to oracle, and I am wondering which views are the most important to monitore.
Can someone give me a usefull link?
I know the views depend of wich kind of information you wanna retrieve.
But I think about space left on tablespaces, segment information, backup information, status of the database.....
So any help would be appreciated. For example I am wonering which views would an admin taking a new job and database would look?
I would recommend you (if not already done):
- first read the Concepts manual:
http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/toc.htm
- then the Administration Guide:
http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/toc.htm
At the end of each chapter of this document, there is a section named "Viewing Information About ..." such as http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/create.htm#sthref482
that contains the related views.

Which folders are the most important?
I am wanting to only back up the folders that contain my FCP files and footage. Is it necessary to back up the "library" "system" or "applications" folders? They seem to take up unnecessary space on my backup since my backup drive is smaller than my main drive.
Considering the price of external drives these days, I recommend you get a large one and let TM do complete backups. Why? I've had two "situations" happen on two macs that required my doing a full restore using the TM backup (and the install disk). If you don't do all folders, especially system folders, you're leaving yourself open for a disaster.

Laptop Video Editing: What are the MOST important specs
I've been editing, for a while now, various projects of various lenghts shot on my HV20, on an IMac using Adobe Premiere Pro. Actually, I bought the CS4 Extended Production Suite. It came with OnLocation, which is, I think, a fantastic tool. I really want to be able to record and monitor my future shoots using OnLocation. I've seen how useful monitors and scopes are on set, and the idea of being able to shoot in HD and actually checking the focus on something larger than a few inches is very appealling!
So a laptop is in my future. Now, what are the most important specs?
I could buy 1) a barely used Macbook pro early 08- 17" HD led display ,4g Ram ddr2 ,nvidia 8600M GT 512 VRAM ,800Mhz BUS, 200G 7200HD
and have enough money left to buy an Apple Display 30" refurb
OR 2) a new Macbook pro 17, 4 g Ram ddr3, 512 VRAm, 4g Ram ddr3, double procsessors 9400M+9600M GT 512 VRAM, 1066 BUS, 500G 7200HD
and wait for a second display!
Plus, of course, a portable External Scratch Drive on the Express Card. Now, if that fast drive is handling the footage, could'nt I settle for a 5400HD in the laptop,, they seem much less prone to problems-clicking noise, heat-than the 7200, especially in the new unibody model. Is 800 versus 1066 BUS a terrible trade-off? In terms of secondary displays , I've heard less than lukewarm things about the new Apple 24 LED (glossy is no-no for me).
My intentions are to make documentaries and short fictions as well. I make a living as an actor so I don't need to be performing as a director/editor business wise!
I do want to explore that side of the craft, in a professional and enjoyable way though. I know that, in addition to the laptop, I will get a MacPro in a few years.
Thanks a lot for the inputs!CPU, RAM, bus speed, system HD, external HD, graphics - basically in that order
You should think in terms of purchasing for maximum future use. In that regard the new 17" MacBookPro is the way to go. The specs are significantly better than the early '08 MacBook and you will be much happier in the long run with performance, software support and longevity.
If you really need a large display, consider a 24" Dell, HP, NEC, etc. in the $200-$300 price range to stay within your total budget. You will be pleasantly surprised how good they are.
You could start out with the 5400rpm system HD - you can replace it anytime with a 7200rpm drive if necessary for hardly any more $ than it would cost in the first place; and replacing it does NOT void your warranty. But you WILL want/need a good external FW800 or eSATA drive (for eSATA you will need an eSATA expressCard/34 however) no matter what.
One other thought, if your primary use will be with an external display, and you don't actually need eSATA capability (FW800 will do you just fine at this point), then the 15" 2.66GHz or 2.8GHz MacBookPro models will be just fine at a significantly lower cost than the 17" model. -
What are the most important functions you cannot bypass in acrobat?
I would like to know what are the most important functionalities that we can not bypass in Acrobat? What makes Acrobat more worthy than other PDF reader/editor?
Personally, I notice that Acrobat (adobe products in general) takes longtime to install or uninstall. I don't find a striking feautre in Acrobat compared with other software!
Worse, Acrobat doesn't support Multiple document interface! So, I don't know why I should pays for Adobe while other free PDF viewer/reader offer this great feature!
Adobe does like Microsoft was doing long time ago in ignoring people opinions! I don't understand why adobe persists not to include MDI (Multiple Document Interface) at least as optional feature?
ThanksThe MDI issue is caused by following Windows User Interface Guidelines. Complain to Microsoft. As to what functionality is most important. The most important is creating problem free pdfs. The other things I find important are the form related capabilities, preflight, pdf optimizer and redaction.

Laptop editing with Premiere Pro CS4: what are the most important specs
Laptop Editing: What are the MOST important specs?
Hello everybody, I have been a long time lurker, but I decided to join in and share my voice.
I've been editing, for a while now, various projects of various lenghts shot on my HV20, on an IMac using Adobe Premiere Pro. Actually, I bought the CS4 Extended Production Suite last year thinking that it made sense to be able to edit, do the coloring and effects+ sound all within the same suite.
AND, it came with OnLocation, wich is, I think, a fantastic tool. I really want to be able to record and monitor my future shoots using OnLocation. I've seen how useful monitors and scopes are on set, and the idea of being able to shoot in HD and actually checking the focus on something larger than a few inches is very appealling!

Thanks a lot for the inputs!Successful video editing (as compared to tear your hair out video editing) requires at least two hard drives... one for all software and one for all data... some people use 3 drives, with data on one and scratch files on the 3rd drive
I'm not sure about software, but everything I've ever read in this forum says 5400 is NOT fast enough for the data drive
If you want to edit video... you have to buy the hardware that works -

The user profile in my old computer somehow became corrupted and I can no longer access it to log on. Unfortunately I was not aware of the Firefox sync feature at the time. I used a new profile and had to start from scratch to save new bookmarks and extensions/plugins. I did set up Firefox sync for this new profile. Now I have a brand new computer and desire to migrate the bookmarks to this new computer, including the original bookmarks in the old computer, as well as the bookmarks in the second profile. While I have located the profiles folder for each profile in my old computer (as well as extensions and plugin folders), the content of this folder is daunting. I would like to know which are the minimal folders I should select to migrate and would it be safe to simply copy and paste over the entire folder? Please note that I have also added new bookmarks into my new computer which I would not like erased. I hope these details are not convoluted.
Firefox has two methods of bringing in bookmarks from another Firefox profile:
* Restore a backup (JSON files in the bookmarkbackups folder): this completely replaces what you have, so is not the first step
* Import from an HTML file: this is additive and will create an Imported Bookmarks folder or add them under Unsorted Bookmarks
Restore is best if you tag your bookmarks because the JSON format preserves tags. If tags are not important, then it's easier.
What I suggest is:
(1) Export your current bookmarks to the HTML format; you can reimport these later. See: [[Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks]]. Open the file in Firefox (it's a web page) to make sure it looks complete before proceed.
Next, get the bookmarkbackups folders from each of your old profiles that you want to restore, and look for the most-complete-looking JSON files (they will have the most recent dates and largest number of bookmarks indicated in the file name). Proceed from the smallest set to the largest, or oldest to newest; basically, restore the most important one last.
(2) Restore a backup, then export to HTML. This article has the steps for a restore: [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]. Then export to HTML and check for completeness.
(3) Repeat #2 until you get to the last/most important restore. You don't need to export that one.
(4) Import the HTML files you've made throughout the process.
(5) In the Library dialog, reorganize. Firefox doesn't have a deduplicator, but you might find one or more extensions to do the job on the Add-ons site if you find a lot of overlap.
Make sense? -
What are the most important system preference files to have backed up?
This isn't specifically a Time Machine question but since it pertains to backup I thought it would be best here. In addition to backing up my entire system to an external HD using Time Machine I'm also planning to back-up critical files to an online service (Mozy) in case I should have a break-in or fire or something like that and not be able to recover either my laptop or my external HD.
I've started to identify some of the files I'd like to back up such as the encrypted database where my passwords are stored (Wallet) but I'm wondering what some of the other things I should back up are. What are the files that would contain important data that I wouldn't want to lose or would help get in me up and running more quickly?Hiya,
firstly, I would not recommend backing up anything *in isolation*. As all system critical files interact, and some are stored (invisibly) at various locations, including the volume header.
The "library" files (you'll find various ones, one in your actual bootup drive, one in your home folder, and one in your "system" folder) are, of course critical (see Dimaxium's post)
With a MBP, I'd recommend timecapsule or external firewire HDD (I had some excellent experience with LaCie 1Tb on Firewire 800 - incredibly fast).
What I'd do, rather than running Time Machine, which can be - of course - *very useful* (drawback, it uses the backup disk till full) is the following:
If you know your existing OS is pristine and works perfectly, I'd get external HDD, install Leopard (from Leopard disk), then use migration assistant and it'll create a clone (if you tick all the boxes - note article about the versions: http://macs.about.com/od/leopard105/ss/migratevol.htm ).
That way, the new disk has everything. And from time to time, just boot up, using your external HDD and update.
Bit more work, but that way, you got a fully functional "emergency OS" available anytime. -
Which Compression has the most bang for the buck?
When I'm 'exporting' a quicktime that I need to post for download, I try to get the size of the file down as much as I can while preserving the video quality.
However, there are so many compression choices, and then more choices with that! Which is best? Sorenson? Motion J-peg?However, there are so many compression choices, and then more choices with that! Which is best? Sorenson?I agree with David here. H.264/AAC generally provides the best quality for a given file size but does require a QT 7 (or eqivalent) media player. Sorenson 3/AAC would maximize compatibility with older, less powerful platforms but requires larger files for a given level of quality. The MPEG4/AAC combination is somewhere in the middle offering rigid standards with easy to use preset management. Would recommend DivX/XviD only if you are trying to attract Windows users and don't care about the possibly of alienating mainstream Mac users.

Define which apps are the in dock for spaces
Is there a way to have certain apps only showing up on the dock in defined spaces?
i.e. Calendar is only showing on the dock when you switch to space 2. So it does NOT show in the dock of space 1.
Thx,There may be more like this out there.
I don't know how compatible these are with Liion.
And third party stuff like this eventually bites your back-end.
But here you go.

Which package is the most imortant among the peoplesoft packages?
I want to be a PeopleSoft programmer, I understand SQR(I used to use it in Hyperion system), and I want to install a peoplesoft software in my laptop, what is the basic software I should install first? Since there are too many peoplesoft packages, I'm not sure which one is the most important and basic staff I should learn first? Is it PeopleSoft Enterprise Perfromance Management? Please advise, thanks!
You should install the database platform and then install the PeopleTools system database. Then install the PeopleTools local client to get access to App Designer.
As a starting point you should just learn the toolset and not worry about the specific applications. All of the modules are built using the toolset. You will need to setup a PIA environment before learning App Engine again this can occur without any specific modules.
Once you know the toolset it depends on the modules you want to learn. Project Costing is a core module that is a good one to know as it is used by most applications. -

Which are the best settings for exporting comps before edditing in Premiere Pro
Hello everyone!
As the title says, which are the best settings for exporting comps from AE to Pr.Pro and then edit them?
Let me explain: I have two comps in AE (intro and outro) and want to export them in Pr.Pro for edditing along with a fottage i shot.
When i render them the size of the files are huge (30 sec= 7GB).
Which is the best method (and settings) i can export the intro and outro to a 'normal' file size and then put them in Pr.Pro without loosing any quality??
[Comp settings: HDTV 1080 29.97 (1920x1080)]
AE and Premiere Pro both CS4If you're rendering and exporting an intermediate video file to go from After Effects to any other piece of post-production software (such as Premiere Pro), you want to make sure that you're not losing any quality.
Most compression methods, which make movies smaller, also lose some of the image data---i.e., quality. There are a few compression methods that don't lose any image data; these are "lossless" codecs. These lossless codecs do decrease the size of a video file, but they're nowhere near as effective at decreasing size as the lossy codecs are. But file size isn't important when you're doing post-production work. Big files are a fact of life in post-production.
Examples of lossless codecs include the PNG codec and the Animation codec at the highest quality settings, both of which can be used in a QuickTime (.mov) container. I prefer the PNG codec; it's more efficient for photorealistic images, whereas Animation is more efficient for things like cartoons. There are lots of other lossless and nearly lossless codecs. A lot of people that do video editing like the Lagarith codec, but that is something that you'd have to go and get; it's not part of a standard CS5 or QuickTime installation.
See these FAQ entries for information about compression and why file sizes are big for losslessly encoded files:
"FAQ: Why is my output file huge...?"
"FAQ: What is the best format for rendering and exporting from After Effects?"
By the way, keep in mind that you don't always need to render and export an intermediate movie to go from After Effects to Premiere Pro. There are other ways to move data back and forth between these applications, including Dynamic Link. Which is best depends on the specific circumstance. See "Working with Premiere Pro and After Effects".
