Which Windows Server Version

Hi Experts,
My Client is in need to have people dial in remotely to their server (which doesnt exist yet).
What Server software version would be the right way to go and what licensing options are to be used to have concurrent RDP sessions?
They only need access to the server to work on a small program, nothing fancy.
Thanks,
Wynand.

Hello,
just for Remote desktop services you can go with Windows server 2008 up to the newest OS versions with the Standard editions. Keep an eye on RAM and processor depending on the amount of users that log on simultaneous. Details about setup please ask in:

  • How long is Hyperv WMI provider (V1 is supported) in coming windows server versions

    Hi Guyz,
We currently have Windows Server 2008r2 servers and recently moved few of them to windows server 2012.  we have lot of powershell scritps that we require for adminstrative purposes and all of them are using Hyperv Wmi Provider (\Root\Virtualization)
via powershell and even after moving to windows server 2012 , we found that the support for WMI provider  1 is available in 2012. But we want to know that is this support always there in coming future versions for hyperv..??? because we have lot of complex
powershell functions written and we seriously need to give lot of time if we wanna change it.

The v1 virtualization namespace was announced as deprecated with the release of Server 2012.  This release contained both v1 and v2 namespaces.
The v1 virtualization namespace was fully deprecated with the Server 2012 R2 release.  This release contained only the v2 namespace.

  • Which Backup server version is required for Sybase cumulative dump/load

    Hello,
To perform cumulative dump and load (supported from ASE 15.7 SP100 and up) with 3rd party API, what backup server version is needed?
We use backup server API version 2.1, and sybackup.h does not have any definition for cumulative dump. This header file only defines DATABASE and TRANSACTION as command_type, so when "dump database foo cumulative" is issued, command_type becomes UNKNOWN.
Since we support all the ASE versions from 15.0.3 and up, we ideally need a backup server API that works for ASE versions from 15.0.3 and also works with cumulative backup. Is there such an API version?
    Thanks,
    Ali

What I'm told is that the version wasn't bumped because the changes shouldn't really affect the API functionality; the API module would still receive a byte stream and be able to store and return it regardless of the command_type.
However, you can easily modify your sybbackup.h to reflect the new command_types.
Replace the current command_type definitions with the following:
#define TRANSACTION 0 /* transaction log dump or load */
    #define DATABASE 1 /* database dump or load */
#define CUMULATIVE 2 /* Cumulative dump to dump or load */
#define UNKNOWN 3 /* Pre-API SQL Server in use. Backup Server
                         has received a DUMP/LOAD command from a
SQL Server which is not passing the
                         'Command Type' toBackup Server. Therefore,
the Command type can not be determined. */
#define DELTA 4 /* Delta dump to dump or load */

  • Satellite U300-111 - Which Windows 7 version you can recommend?

    Hello everyone!
I have a friend with a Toshiba Satellite U300-111, and she wants to install Win7 on it.
Since it's got a T7100 processor, I'm thinking she could install 64bit version, but it seems like there are far fewer supported drivers compared to the 32bit.
Do you recommend her going for 32 or 64?
    Thanks for any answers :)
Link to the PC if you need: http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=EU&com.broadvis ion.session.new=Yes&PRODUCT_ID=129981&tab=2#2

    Hi
Yes, for older notebooks you have a better driver support on 32bit OS because 64bit OS is only necessary if you have 4GB RAM or more installed. Otherwise you can only use 3.2GB RAM.
So if you have more less RAM I would recommend the 32bit version. :)

    Hello,

    Hi Monika,
which Windows Server 2008 R2 edition is required to install RAC - standard or enterprise (NOT database edition - windows server 2008 edition)?
If we want to implement RAC 11Gr2 Enterprise Edition does the operating system also has to be enterprise edition or is it possible to install RAC 11GR2 Enterprise Edition on Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition? All Oracle Database 11g Release 2 is supported on the following Windows Server 2008 R2 editions:
    Windows Web Server 2008 (x64)
    Windows Server 2008 Foundation (x64)
    Windows Server 2008 Standard (x64)
    Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (x64)
    Windows Server 2008 Datacenter (x64)
What Server Version is more suited for RAC Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008, and why?I recommend Windows 2008, because the system is newer and has a lot of features that do not exist in Windows 2003. Oracle 11.2 is certified in Windows 2008.

    > Does Microsoft windows2008 server edition / windows 7/vista  supports installation of ERP 6.0  .
Did you have a look at the PAM as suggest at http://service.sap.com/pam?
Vista/Windows 7 are client operating systems and are not supported for ERP 6.0 or Solution Manager or any other backend.

  • Managing Windows Server licences (please suggest some tool)

    Hi
Does any body know any good tool for discovering Windows Server keys, and managing licences on different Windows Server versions? I Tried VAMT, but i would preffer something with keys database, that could tell me "You have this many keys left for this
versions of windows server" after including the keys from VLSC.
Any ideas about a tool to manage licences?

    Hi,
The Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer will scan a network and give you a report of which Microsoft products are currently installed on each computer. Maybe you can use it to figure out how many licenses you will need to purchase or how many extra
    licenses you have:

  • Can BI 4.0 be installed on Windows enterprise instead of Windows server?

Can I install BI 4.0 FP3 on my laptop which runs Windows 7 enterprise instead of on a windows server?  The prerequisite check gives only "yellow warning" fo rthe windows server version and shows as "optional".  Does that mean it is OK to install on a non-server version windows?
    Thanks for any input!

Not recommended. Installing the BI Platform 4.0 Server product on your laptop would likely completely tank your laptop to the point where it is unusable. The BI Platform 4.0 product is a massive install and we recommend installing it on a server because you need a very powerful system for it to run correctly. Installing on a laptop would give you a very poor impression of the product.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 OEM Virtual Machine Installs

My company purchased and OEM server license instead of an open license. Since the seal was broken already on the packaging we cannot return it. I have read several articles online and I wanted to ask Tech  Net ensure I didn't miss something.
What I want to know is OEM Server OS in compliance when installed as VM's?
The license package says two 2 CPU/2 VM, does this mean I have two seats available for VM's?
According to OEM license, OEM VM's will live and die on the same machine, correct? Meaning, non-transferable.
Why I am asking these questions is because our hosting provider is telling us it must be purchased with a machine and cannot be used in that manner I want. Also, I really don't want to throw away money like that.

Windows Server licenses are assigned to the physical hardware.  Windows Server licenses grant you specific rights.  One of the rights bestowed with the purchase of a Windows Server Standard license is the right to run up to two virtual operating
system environments on which Windows Server is installed.  If one of the VMs is moved to a different host system, that new host system must be licensed to run the number of virtual instances then running on the new host.
I'm still not sure how you purchased an OEM license without hardware.  That is the way Microsoft sells those licenses.  If you did not purchase this from a Microsoft authorized OEM, I would be very cautious as to whether or not you have a valid
    distribution/license.
That said, an OEM Windows Server license is assigned to a specific server.  This differs from other licenses, like Open or Volume or Retail which grant the right to move from one server to another once every 90 days.  OEM licenses can't move from
one server to another.  Additional contracts with Microsoft allow for some level of movement, but the OEM license itself does not grant that right.
Once the OEM license is assigned (this is a paper transaction, i.e. there is no 'installation' of the license) that machine then has the rights granted by that license.  In the case of Windows Server Standard, the virtualization rights are for two concurrently
running Windows Server VMs as long as you are not running services on the host not related to management of the virtual environment.
When it comes to licensing, it is always best to talk with a trained Microsoft licensing specialist.  Your OEM should be able to explain this to you, but if he is selling licenses without hardware, I might look a little askance at his business practices.
Remember that a license is a legal agreement between you and Microsoft.  Depending upon technical forums for legal advice is not something your lawyers would recommend.
And, the fact that you have a hosting environment means that you might even be better served by a different licensing model.  Microsoft has different licensing programs for different usage.
