Which wireless router do I choose?

I've been putting off buying a  wireless  because I don't know which model to choose.    I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop and an Emachine T2542 PC.  Both are currently connected to a wired router and DSL  and each has their own printer.  With all the choices out there, Broadband, Speedbooster, etc, I don't know which is needed.  Dell advised me to get the Speedbooster and an internal adapter card that would require self installation.
Thank you,
jaz1957

Its difficult to find a version 4 now a days but they are out there.  Be easier to find a WRT54GL, L stands for Linux.  Its just a renamed WRT54G v4.  In my opinion they are more stable and reliable than the v5, v6 and v7.  If you are going to retail stores looking for the WRT54G look for serial numbers on the box that start with ....
CDFA = WRT54G v4
CL7A = WRT54GL v1
CL7B = WRT54GL v1.1

  • Which wireless router?

Simple question, after reading reviews and noting problems. All I need to know is which wireless router is recommended to connect our iMAC, which has Airport Extreme card, to Telewest Broadband Cable (now Virgin), please?

I would say that your choice of wireless routers is similar to choosing a computer. You can buy an Apple product that will be effective and easy to set up and use, or you can pay a little less for another brand which may or may not do the job.
If the Airport Express has the features you need then get it instead of the Extreme. If you do go with a non-Apple brand then my advice is to stay away from Linksys because I have had several of their network devices die for no apparent reason.

    Hi,
normally it doesn't matter which router or PC card you use, they all should work.
I'm using a card from Netgear, never had any problems with it.

Which wireless router works best with Apple products?

I cannot comment of Airport products, as I have none.  Nor would I suppose to argue with Kappy or Ralph.
But in a pinch a LinkSys E2500 will work, as it does for me.

  • Which wireless router for ibook?

    Hi everybody!
I would like to know which wireless router (beside apple ones) you can suggest (for less then $100) compatible with ibook.
    Thanks!

An iBook with an Airport Extreme card can connect to any wifi certified 802.11b or 802.11g wireless network.

  • Which Wireless Router Is For Me???

Hey all, I am new here at the forums and I just have a quick question.
Right now I have a WRT54G basic 4-port wireless router.  I have a wired Pc, a wired laptop, and a wireless xbox 360.  Now I am looking to take a step forward to the new N Routers because my xbox 360 connecton literally sucks.  I am going to buy one of these new wireless N Adapters for the xbox.  (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360wirelessnnetadapter/)   But I dont know which new, fancy Wireless N Router to buy.
This is my question, you now know my set-up and stuff.  Which new Wireless N Router should I buy?
    Thanks

Some good N Linksys Routers are WRT160N,WRT320N,WRT350N,WRT610N...

  • Which wireless router should I buy?

After many hassles trying to get my 3 yr old speedtouch router to work reliably with my Macs I've decided it's time for an upgrade. Can I please get your wireless router recommendations for hassle free surfing on a Mac
    Many thanks
    David

When you want some router advice you need to be more specific.
A router does not include a DSL modem. So if your needing a box to replace a speedtouch then you need an ADSL router.
An ADSL router is a dsl modem and router combined.
You also don't specify who your isp is or what country your in.. This has some implications as if your in the UK for example some isp's use Annex M, ADSL2+ etc. Not all ADSL routers support these protocols and in the UK we use PPPoA IPoA and PPPoE. In other parts of the world only PPPoE is used.
So if you want an example of an all round box that works with 99% of the protocols it is the netgear DG834GT. However netgear now have a wireless N compatible router however I have not had any reports whether this box will work with apples wireless N. However in theory it should.
If you want a standard wireless router to use with an existing DSL modem then I would recommend the linksys wrt54G

  • Which wireless router do I need for multiple VPN tunnels?

I work at home and I connect to my office VPN (SSH Extranet Client) thru cable broadband. I need to have 2 VPN tunnels open as I frequently have my laptop & desktop connected to my work VPN. I've had a BEFSX41 for the past 3 years and it's worked good as it allowed for 2 VPN tunnels. It just died on me a few days ago and I would like to go wireless now. What wireless router(s) would meet my needs? Thanks in advance for any input.Message Edited by nolesworld on 11-27-200606:24 PM

  • Which Wireless Router works well with Satellite A200-401

Just about to buy a Satellite A200-401 notebook can anyone suggest a good affordable wireless router that works well with this?
    steve

Hm, thats a strange question because I doesnt depends on the machine, more on the installed wireless card. But usually a Netgear router is always a good choice...they are reliable, dont need much power and you can extend your network range with these special Nergear "Range externders".
I have a Netgear WGR614 and it works like a charm, it has everything you need.
    Heres a link:

  • Which wireless router should i get?

I have a Airport Express that I am thinking about replacing.  My wife's white macbook keeps dropping signal, while my black macbook is fine.  I thought it was a problem with her computer but then we went on vactaion and the whole time we were there her computer never lost signal.  Also I want to connect a wireless transmitter to the router for my Dish Network so I need a ethernet port.  On my network I am running:
    Imac (intel)
    2 Mackbooks
    2 Iphones
    1 Ipad
    Apple TV
    PS3
    Dish Network Transmitter
I would like something that runs both bands simultaniously.  I know that the Airport extreme would work for me but I am wondering it there is something better out there.  Are all Airport Express base stations dual band?  Our network seems to be running kind of slow.
    Thanks
    Jeremy

    Hi J Hensel,
The Airport Extreme and Time Capsule are the only routers made by apple which run on simultaneous dual-band networks. It's a brilliant concept, essentially two wireless networks are broadcast at the same time to provide 802.11n speeds for capable devices, and 802.11b/g to devices still running on that protocol.
The Airport Express are what Apple calls "dual-band capable". This makes them a great addition to any network and a perfect companion for proximal devices. Dual-band capable allows it to run either N or B/G networks. So if you have 4 802.11n devices on your network they will all benefit from the faster speeds and better range. If one B/G device tries to connect to the router, it will intelligently switch its broadcast mode to B/G. This seamless transition allows all of your devices to connect effortlessly, however it will mean the great range you experienced browsing on N capable devices will be retrograded to B/G standards.
I have no problem recommending an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule, I imagine it will meet all of your needs and then some!
Another important thing to note is Airport Express can only support up to 10 devices at a time, whereas you'll find the airport extreme can support up to 50!
The fact you have 9 devices on your current network might be the root of your particular issue.
Hope this is helpful for you.
    Cheers,
    Ajb.

  • Which wireless router do you recommend

    Hi,
I am currently using a Linksys BEFW11S4 router with my desktop pc and iBok and would like to upgrade to the newer technology. It is all confusing between the major companies including Apple. Linksys doesn't support Apple issues very well but I was looking at the WRT54G or GS model. Any comments on which brand seems to work best with both machines?
    Thanks alot!!

    Hi Wendy,
Upgrading isn't a big deal at all. Just disconnect the old and connect the new then go through the setup. Some (Belkin is one and there are others) even have a Mac setup wizard but setup without one is no big deal.
A newer router will allow you to use WPA security which is much better than WEP. MAC address filtering is really useless because even amateur hackers can clone a MAC address and fool the router. WPA is all you need.
The download speed from internet sites won't improve any with a 802.11g router. None of the ISPs offer anything approaching even 802.11b speeds yet. They advertise speeds of 8Mbs but that's under ideal conditions. If you transfer files between computers on your network or stream media you will see an increase though.
If you want to upgrade for security reasons by all means do so. $40 or so for peace of mind is cheap. Just don't think you'll surf the internet any faster.

  • Which wireless router do i need?

I also am in the market for a wireless N router I was looking at the WRT610 dual band simultaneous i watch movies online and the buffering is killing me.. I also have a macbook 2009 any suggestions? thank you
    < Edited by Host >

How about the AirPort Extreme base station? It is designed to be easy to use with Macs (especially the excellent AirPort Utility that is used to set up and manage it), and the current model has 802.11n with dual band features.
    http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/
It also has a USB port that can be used with a standard USB 2.0 external drive to provide network storage.
I have the older original square 802.11n version, and it has been working fine since I got it.

  • I want a wireless router/modem- any advice?

Me again - technically challenged of London!
OK - so now I see how the ethernet connection would sit in the iMAC and the airport extreme card in the powerbook - but I am totally confused by the multitude of wireless modem/router contraptions available (I can feel my credit card about to explode in anticipation...)
I've narrowed my choice to either the d Link, netgear or Linksys brands as these seem compatible with both the airport express and my old PC laptop and network card.
Can anyone add wise words? I've researched the combined modem/router because adsl modems in the uk are usb only...(see I'm learning something!)
Meanwhile thanks for the support to this particluar "newbie".
    Rachel

It matters not of which wireless router you choose, as they all comply to the IEEE 802.11 format. (In your case, 802.11g)
Be forewarned that using a third-party router programme may be a bit tricky to setup, as third-party routers will need to be set up via web browser.
Linksys I found to be the best in overall functionality, however, it's setup method is quite tricky.
Should you choose to go Airport Extreme over all other brands, you might have to pay a little more, but you will get more features and far more functionality, plus, setup with the included Apple Airport Utility will be much easier and more user-friendly.
Guaranteed that the Airport cards will be compatible with any 802.11g wireless router that you choose.
"Combined" equipment, however, I feel can cause problems in the future, should one part of the equipment cease to function, it would be of a greater cost to replace or repair, so don't go that route.
Also, should you choose third party, you will need to setup the router directly via ethernet anyway.
Is there anything else that you would like to know?
    Happy Christmas

  • Which T1 Wireless router to choose??

We just got a T1 line installed for a remote location...
What would be a good wireless router to get. They are going to WEBVPN into our main building. But i need a wireless router to support T1 speeds, since we are paying for it...
    Any help would be appreciated!!

    Thanks for the rate.
    Both routers are ADSL+ capable.
I've seen your post from previous NetPro topics. I am very curious to know how many branches and offices are you going to operate. Is your Head Office going to have Wireless too?
If your office will have Wireless in plan, I would recommend that you consider a Wireless LAN Controller. You deploy your AP's to your branches/offices and configure them for Hybrid Remote End AP (H-REAP). It's a very cost effective solution.
