While I'm charging my mac my fan just started running abnormally loud, what do I do?

My fan just started to be abnormally loud when I charge my computer. When I unplug the charger from my computer it stops, but I just have never heard the fan run so hard. Is my computer going to over heat every time I charge it?

Reset SMC

Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, you may have to take the computer to the Apple store
to have it checked out.

mac mini fan just sped up to 5500 RPM
temps are normal though, no overload to system.

The first thing I would try is to perform an SMC reset on the system:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, +making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.+
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
If the fan continues to run at full speed after that, does it do so right from power on, or on;y after the system has been running a few minutes?

Hi there Sing Me A Song,
You may have changed the Up Next list in iTunes. Take a look at the article below for more information on the Up Next lists and how to edit it.

  • Our iMac (intel) just started to hum loudly.  It is like the fan is stuck on.  Any ideas?

Our iMac (intel) just started to hum very loudly.  It is like there is a cooling fan stuck on inside the computer.  Any ideas what this is?

    Diana,
We don't know what machien you have or the version of OS X it is running because you haven't completed your profile. I would start though by doing a SMC reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

    Try resetting the SMC
    Shut down the computer.

  • Fan is always running - very loud!

I've had this problem for several days and I'm at a loss. The fan on my Macbook is constantly running at a high speed, from the moment I turn it on until I turn it off. The computer does not feel hot, so I don't know why it's running so loudly.
I've reset the SMC and PRAM, and checked to make sure that there isn't an old print job in the printer queue - all the advice I've seen elsewhere online - and none of it has done any good.
According to iStat, the fan is going at 6200rpm, and the CPU temp is 45 degrees F.
Is there anything else I can try to calm the fan down? It's driving me crazy. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Correction - the temperature was in C. It's currently running at 111 degrees F! I can't figure out what's making it run so hot. I've seen elsewhere that I should check the Activity Monitor, but I have no idea what to look for there. Help?

  • Mac Pro fans all of a sudden running extremely loud!

I restarted my computer routinely and when it booted back up the fans started running very loud. They have never run this loud before.
I reset SRC and PRAM as well as replaced the power cord and cleaned the dust out. I also checked that there were not any programs running at high CPU.  Nothing new was installed on or into the computer. The computer is not running hot.
I don't know what else to do
The loud fans does not affect the performance of the computer but it's a work from home computer and I need these fans to quiet down!!
This is a MAC pro 1,1 running OS 10.7

Readers have reported "all fans" went to high speed, but on closer examination it sometimes turns out that the graphics card fan, all by itself was making all that noise. If that is the case, the prognosis is very different.
The side door is not interlocked, and can be removed with the Mac Running to determine the exact source of the fan noise.
Caution: The European Commission has determined the anyone living in Europe is not smart enough to keep their fingers out of the plastic fans used in a Mac Pro, so they have been banned Mac Pro silver tower from sale in Europe for over a year now.

  • Mac G5 Won't start no matter what I do!

I hope someone can please help. My mac has always ran perfectly fine and there was no sign of anything strange when i last shut it down. When I tried to turn it on this morning, I did not hear the chime and it didn't sound like the disc was turning at all, it just sits there with a dark screen and soon thereafter the fan turns on and starts running very loudly. I have to hold down the button to turn it off.
    I've tried
    - unplugging everything for 10 minutes to reset.
    - reseting the PRAM
    - starting from the back-up drive
    - starting from the install disc
The result is always the same. Nothing happens! Is there anything else I can try? THis is very upsetting for me. I have some important data on my computer that hasn't been backed up. I really would like to figure out how to safely solve this problem.
    Thanks for any advice,
    Karen

    Hi Allan,
I was afraid of that. Also, I found this thread by searching the boards and it sounds exactly like my problem. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1072271&start=0&tstart=0
I took it to the apple store and am waiting for the diagnostic, but it doesn't look good. They are guessing it's the motherboard and estimated the repair to be close to $1000. For that price, i am considering the iMac. It is faster in every respect to my G5. It's amazing how technology has advanced in 3 years. Anyway, considering I haven't expanded my G5 in that time means I probably won't. Plus, i never have had an apple monitor which is obviously a major perk to the imac.
I am considering the 20" and will definitely increase the RAM to 2GB. It is my understanding that is the most important upgrade for video editing.
I don't know much about the Radeon video card and am curious if someone could tell me the benefit to getting the 2600 over the 2400.
Thanks and wish i had a better update on my poor G5. I must say, i am pretty disappointed something so major could go wrong with a 3 year old, well cared for machine.

  • My Macbook Fan Is Running Very Loud...

My fan has been running very loud for the past week and I'm not sure whats wrong with it.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If the fan is working all the time, it looks like a sensor problem.
Run Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US Plug the MacBook Pro to its charger, choose your language, tick the box to run an extended test and start the test. If at the end of the test you see an error, copy it here.
It's probable that this is a sensor problem, but if the problem doesn't happen during startup, it would be a process which is consuming your CPU. Open Activity Monitor, select "All Processes" above "Show" in the toolbar, and order processes by CPU. Do you see any process which is consuming more CPU than the others?

  • My fan is running really loud, low cpu (i think?)

My fan has been running really loudly for a day now. I have tried turning it off and on again, putting it to sleep, cleaning out the dust.
On my activity monitor "opendirectoryd" is running at 94.5 percent and I have no idea what that is and if it is causing the problem?
I have looked at answers on other forums for the same thing but none of the remedies have seemed to work. Can any one help please?

    Hi..
Try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
As a rule it is not a good idea to run Terminal commands unless you have a better understanding of what the results should be.

  • Can't receive Gmail in Mac Mail - just started

I can't seem to get any of my imap Gmail in my Mac Mail account - just started happening. Connection doctor is ok, but the little spinner just spins and spins next to my Gmail acct and nothing downloads. Have access through Time Warner Roadrunner. I can see in my online Gmail acct that a few new messages have come in, but nothing will download in MacMail. My me.com acct works ok, just seems to be Gmail. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Mark

I should also add that when I try to send a Gmail message to myself at my Gmail address using the Gmail smtp server, the message activity bar goes about 1/2 way across and then just stalls.. Then I have two spinning gizmos - one next to my Sent box and one next to my Gmail box. I just tried sending out of my mobile me acct and that doesn't seem to go out either now.
I should also mention that yesterday I accidentally drug in a whole Project out of iPhoto to send a picture to someone and didn't realize Mail was trying to send the whole project. I saw under Mail activity that this was going to take forever, so I tried to cancel it. That may be part of the problem. Bad things started happening after that. I do also in my Gmail acct under the Sent Folder, a solid circle to the right of it with just a tiny part of it showing white, like it was at the beginning of sending something big, but never finished. Is there a way to clear all this out, as I'm suspecting something went amiss there - just a guess.
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • Mac Mini fan won't turn off (only while powered on)

Unlike some stories i've read while crawling around the internet trying to solve MY problem, it's not that my fan won't shut off EVER. The fan shuts down when i put it in sleep mode or shut down the Mini. No problems there. But while the computer is in operation, the fan runs non-stop.
It wasn't always like this. In the 2.5 years i've had my Intel Mac Mini, it has more and more frequently employed the fan. As of the last couple months, the fan is now in continuous use, as long as the computer is in operation. In addition, all the programs take much longer to load, and i'm dealing with programs crashing (Firefox & Safari far more than anything), Bluetooth not functioning, and the front light on my Mini is out.
As for the fan, the Mini is getting plenty of breathing room...even more than it had before the problem. I also have 22GB left on my Mini's hard disk.
Are all these problems related? Am i really just working on my last thruster here? Is my dilitium crystal just about dead? Is a warp core breach imminent? I do not have AppleCare, and i don't know if the Apple Store would look at it for free if i brought it in. Any help (no matter how small) would be greatly appreciated.
    MY STUFF:
    Mac Mini - 1.66 Intel Core Duo, 2G 667 HHz DDR2 SDRAM
Iomega MiniMax 1TB external HD (for audio/video files)
Iomega Minimax 1TB external HD (for Time Machine)
    OSX 10.5.6

When you start your mini from cold (after at least an hour powered down) does the fan spin up to full speed immediately, or does it start out normally and then speed up after a few minutes or so? Did you have the system open for any reason just before this behavior started?
If you had the system open, it might be something as simple as the fan control cable that is not connected. When disconnected, the fan will run at full speed all the time.
It the fan runs at full speed almost immediately from cold, then it would suggest one of two things: either the system is suffering from something like a loose heatsink, or there is an errant process running that is putting the system under heavy load. You can check that by opening Activity Monitor (in Applications>Utilities) at looking to see if the CPU load is consistently high. If it is, look for a process that is causing it.
If the fan runs quietly at first, and then speeds up, after a few minutes, then it does seem likely to be a heating issue. Aside from making sure the vents around the base and on the back are clear by using a good vacuum cleaner, it's possible there is enough debris inside to obstruct the airflow. If you've opened up the system previously for any reason, now might be a good time to do so again, for a quick inspection and clean out.
I would also perform an SMC reset if you have not already done so:
To reset the SMC on an Intel mini:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
And to ensure you are not suffering from a range of broad 'tuning' type issues, download a copy of YASU (http://jimmitchelldesign.com/projects/yasu/) and run all tasks. This clears cache files, resets logs files, updates prebinding, performs a permission repair and a few other tasks. After the reboot (which will be slower than usual) your system should run a little better.
... i don't know if the Apple Store would look at it for free if i brought it in....
You can make an appointment at the 'genius Bar' of your local Apple store - they will look at your system for free, and help with a diagnosis. What they generally wont do without charging for it is anything that involves opening the system up. However, it's worth paying them a visit for a bit of hands on work!

  • Can I use my new IPad while it is charging

Can I use my New IPad while it is charging?

You can use the iPad while it's charging, however, it will take longer to fully charge.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night.
