So I am a dummy obviously, but I am trying to figure out how to find this part. I have looked in ebay, and although there are many cables for the macbook, there are none for the macbook pro. ifixit.com said i have to buy the top case (over $200) and powermedic also doesn't have the cable by itself. I am running out of options here. Anybody have any ideas where i can find the cable???

I recently changed out my hard drive for a bigger one during a computer upgrade. I deactivated my CS5 through Photoshop, and then changed out the hardware. I brought the programs back over and now only Photoshop works and the other programs of CS5 do not work. Is the license unique for each one? I assumed I only needed to deactivate one member of the CS5 family. What can I do now that I have a new hard drive?

If by "brought the programs back over" you mean you somehow transferred them from the old drive to the new one, transferring does not usually work. Adobe programs need to be installed using installations files. Borken ribbon cable from keyboard

I broke the ribbon cable when taking off the keyboard, can I "glue" the cable together? if its not possible where can I get the right cable (been looking on ebay only find whole keyboard)?

The cable is not easy to replace even if you have one from an organ donor. It is a 2-sided, press-fit connection with adhesive on both sides between the numerous contacts. Probably, only crazy people (like me) fix them.

I removed my SB Audigy 2 Platinum - because I listened to the advice of other "so-called" home-recording musicians - and replaced it with (2) different "so-called" professional soundcards - both of which did not hold a candle to the SB Audigy 2 Platinum - so I have decided to put it back in my computer - my problem is: I have lost the wide ribbon cable (the AD_EXT cable) that connects the break-out box to the actual soundcard (I managed to keep EVERYTHING else in the box but that).... I wanted to ask if anyone knows if I could use a conventional ribbon cable (like the type that connects a hard dri've to the motherboard) as replacement for the AD_EXT. I actually checked to see if a regular ribbon cable would fit (without any power or other connections) and it seemed to slip on perfectly to both - plus it looks EXACTLY like the AD_EXT cable that came with the SB (red stripe & all). So again, can I go ahead and use a conventional hard-dri've ribbon cable as a replacement for the AD_EXT? And, if not ... can I order that part from Creative? I think it is the same. What Creative is saying, is that it is not an IDE connector, so don't connect your HDD there. This is because ISA soundcards used to come with a secondary IDE connector, which is not the case with modern soundcards.
If it looks the same and there was no twist on the cable then it should work. But I cannot confirm this for sure!

Using ipod as a hard drive to transfer data from PC to Mac

hey, Is is possible to use the ipod as a hard drive to transfer data from/to Mac and windows PCs?
I see no problem transfering data from/to my mac to the ipod. But I cannot see the ipod on the PC. When I plug the USB cable to my windows PC, it shows a popup message "external disk is not formated. Do you want to format it?".

Windows cannot read a Mac formatted iPod.
Macs can read Windows fomratted iPods.
You need to run iTunes for Windows, then Restore the iPod.
It will now work on both Mac and PC.

I need help finding a replacement hard drive/IR sensor cable for my laptop.

I have a 17" Macbook Pro from September 2009, and the hard drive cable has ripped at the junction where the hard drive cable and the IR sensor cable meet.
My brother needed to use my comp to try to transfer stuff from the hard drive from his broken laptop to an external hard drive, and the cable ripped the second time he was fiddling with it.

When searching for "macbook pro unibody 2009 17" hard drive/ir sensor cable" it doesn't come up with any for the 17" but it comes up with a bunch for 13" and 15" and it seems like the 15" ones would work for my computer.

I'm having no success finding a cable that looks just like the one in my comp that's specifically for the 17" that goes to the hard drive AND the IR sensor. For example, all I've been able to find so far are things like this:

There is no way to export Faces information.
I'm not sure why you would do this:

If space is an issue then move the whole Library to an external drive:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
(1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
If that doesn't work
(2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Windows images, but you get the point. Depending on the age of your library the library file might not include the .itl extention. Make it match the file you are replacing.
See MusicFolder Files Not Added and Super Remove Dead Tracks for tools to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.

I haven't done this with an external drive, but I would imagine it works the same way as if you have multiple internal drives. Also hopefully it works with less headache in OSX than in windows.
Anyway, move all your music over to your external, and then go into itunes -> preferences -> advanced -> iTunes media folder location. Navigate to your drive, and pick the folder you want. Ensure that your folders are set up like they are in your ~/Music/iTunes folder, or wherever your iTunes is currently pointing. Then quit and restart itunes. If your music doesn't show up, try dragging your music folder from your external onto itunes, and it will hopefully update your library.xml.
As far as Jerry's problem goes, you could try adding another music folder to your library.xml, but I really have no idea whether this will work or not. If you want to give it a try (can't promise you won't corrupt your library.xml, so make a copy beforehand) you can find the music folder xml element right near the top of the xml file (open it with textedit/textmate/whatever text editor you want (NOT WORD)). Curious to know if this works, and if it doesn't I have other ideas so let me know.

TM can back up external HDs. If you have both of your external drives attached, go to the options in TM preferences. Be sure the data drive is not listed (this lists drives/folders to exclude from a backup). Then initiate a TM backup or wait for the hourly backup. That should back up the data drive.
You can only tell TM what to exclude from a backup, not what to include.

My WD 2tb external hard drive will not unmount from my MacBook Pro. It no longer even shows up in finder, however it does show up in Disk Utility. I have tired so many of the suggestions on the internet all to a fail.
I keep getting the message to be sure that all applications are closed before ejecting the drive. I have no clue how to tell which appliactions are using the external drive to shut them off. I turned off Time Machiene to be safe.
I don't need anything on the external drive, I am just trying to erase it, save my current info, and migrate it to my new MacBook Pro.
I have been about four days now with this issue all over the internet, in this community, and watching videos on everything and nothing about this topic to a fail.
I think I am doomed and have lossed this external drive because of some wierd application that will NEVER close on my hard drive for it to disconnect correctly. It's annoying.

Have you trie using another USB port? Can you test the USB ports with other USB devices to assure they are working? You may want to reinstall OS X in case there has been a driver glitch.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
