Whine intensity
I have a MBP with whine and i've noticed that the whine intensity or volume varies when i'm scrolling around with my trackpad, and if i don't do anything the computer stops whining. If I move it, comes back again. Do you have this kind of whine ? I used the photobooth tecnique but, it doens't work anymore. At the moment it only stops by disabling one of the cores. I think the whine stops with only one core because it get's capped at 1833 ( according to core duo temp ). My idle temperature is 50ºC and full system load 83ºC. Feedback is appreciated.

homertime33's answer may seem harsh, but it's true -- it's reality.
Posting threads merely complaining about whine and asking for a response from Apple will have no effect.
Postings asking users about workarounds to reduce or eliminate whine, so that the annoyance can be reduced, do result in sharing information.
Directly contacting Apple is the appropriate way to get a response from Apple.
Apple has an excellent reputation for customer service. From many of the postings here, they have been leaning over backwards to replace or repair computers. Some users report being on their third, forth, fifth or even sixth MPB. That's costing them a lot of money. They can't resell as new the computers they accept for replacement.
Some complaints have a subjective element, especially heat and -- to some degree at least -- sounds. I suspect that some complaints about stability result from user installation of incompatible software. If Apple replaces the computer, the user installs the same incompatible software. Result: the computer will be unstable, no matter how many replacements Apple provides.
I'm perfectly satisfied with my week 12 MBP. No whine, heat or stability problems. It's fast and has exceeded my expectations.

Has Anyone Repaired "The Whine"?
Has anyone sent in their computer to get the electronic whine fixed? If so, have they gotten it back, and did it work?
I have the whine problem and was seeing if it is worthwhile. My MBP is my only computer, and I need it for school, so it would be hard to send it in for weeks and not have any computer to use.
Also, would it be possible for an Apple repair center to fix the computer within a few days, via them having the parts, and me dropping my computer off and picking it up later? I live on Los Angeles, but can anyone do that anywhere? To be clear, there are multiple whines:
CPU at idle (the one you mention above)
Backlight inverter board
Constantly spinning Fan
CAI is a low drone, can be remedied by running CPU intensive tasks or by using iSight. The mirror widget may mute the sound until sleep.
BIB sounds like nails on a chalkboard and is undoubtedly recognizable - though it comes and goes as the ambient light changes.
CSF sounds like it should - no surprises here. Seems to be associated with the hardware error 4SNS/1/40000000: 'TmOP' (found by running the Apple Hardware test).
Some people have made audio recordings of their MBPs. Google for them or contact me for mine.

Is this the infamous CPU whine?
I recently got a new logic board for my MBP, and since then, I've noticed that a quiet whine coming from it. The MBP is a mid-2006 model; the logic board was installed by AppleCare a week ago. The whine only happens when the computer is not plugged in to the MagSafe adapter, and it's fairly faint; it's just barely bearable. Is this the CPU whine that existed several years ago, or is this just normal behavior? I thought they would have fixed the CPU whine problem on new logic boards by now. I don't think I heard this whine before in the 3+ years that I've had this computer. If I do stuff like scroll a page or run CPU-intensive tasks, then the whine seems to go away momentarily, which seems to be what the old CPU whine used to do.
Download SystemLoad and run that. See if you can get the CPU to "sing."

Hi Guys..
I recently got a MBP (week 23) standard config.. As far as i remember i didnt notice the whirring or buzzing sound (known as CPU whine) until i upgraded to 10.4.7..
Well its pretty faint but i can easily here it when i am in a silent room n the thought that i have it now really makes me hear that n indeed this bugs me.. This is my first ever Apple product n first ever laptop (I am a newbie)..
I talked to a guy on apple support n told him about the issue n he said it might be the inverter buzz n is a hardware issue.. BUT i told him tht it cant be hardware as it goes away whn i turn on the photobooth or i do CPU intensive tasks, so it seems to me that its a software thingy..
So i have two quetions:
1) Is it a hardware issue or not??? If it is then i am gona send it back (ny suggestions on tht too will be appreciated)..
2) Other than the slight whine, ITS PERFECT, totaly NO ISSUES.. Jus wondering tht i turn the photobooth on to make it silent what effect does it make on the battery??? Cant figure out
Any help will be much appreciated as i need to make a decision tht whether i m gona send it back or keep it (plz provide suggestions on tht too if you can..)
Kind Regards

MBP 2.0 Ghz, 512 RAM Mac OS X (10.4.6)Hello Singh1699,
Yes, I already talked to one of the Apple staff in Ireland (I lived in Swiss) and they admitted that it IS the hardware related problem. They said the build is not somehow fully compatible with the core program of MAC OSX causing the noise from CPU and, quite a few times, with the power invertor.
You can search my posts here for more information about this issues. What I would recommend you to do is try to get a hold of Apple store, ask them for a replacement (you can even put the noise on phone for them to hear as I did). You have to be quick before your 14 days of return expires. That what I did and now I am waiting for my new one to arrive.
Hope this helps
Cheers,

They had 6 MacBooks, 3 1.8s and 3 2.0s, and -every- -single- -one- of them had the whine.
Wow.
I'd never heard it before, just read about it, but it's really an unmistakeable sound. I personally could never live with it, but I could see how in a loud environment for some people it might be overlookable.
I really want to buy one and was hoping the ones that made the noise were few and far between, but I came away concluding that most likely nearly all of them do it, because the sound was nearly identical on every machine. Though putting the plug in on one of them made it go down a bit.
It's really surprising they released these as is, imo. You couldn't have one on in a meeting, for example. It would definitely disturb conversation.
On the plus side though, I didn't think the heat was too bad. Certainly hotter than my PB G4, and I wouldn't want to put it on my lap, but the and keyboards were not remotely too hot to touch. Granted they weren't doing CPU intensive stuff, but they presumably had been powered up all day.
Various Macs and PCs Mac OS X (10.4.6)I had occasion to visit one of our local Apple Stores (Bridgeport Village) tonite. They had 9 MBP's on display in various locations in the store. The store was practically empty and so I went to each one and listened closely including putting my ear to the speakers on each side, listening carefully for any noise. I can tell you that NONE (ZERO, NADA, ZILCH) had any audible sound, whine or otherwise. They were quieter than my machine, which is a week 8 and has no whine, just the usual fan noise.
This store had a pretty laid back staff. I was able to randomly determine S/N configs on about 4 machines - 8610, 8609, 8613, 8610.
According to the manager, they've had a few machines brought back in for heat issues, but the whine issue has been "...a big nothing". We've heard about it, but we've never seen a machine brought in with anything that approaches the descriptions we read about on this newsgroup. We try to check each machine we display and we've frequently opened machines and helped customers get set up. But that's the extent of our exposure. Our machines run 24/7 and while they get warm, we wouldn't call any of them hot, and, like you, we don't hear any whines.
So, obviously mileage varies widely. -
I was curious as to whether the infamous CPU whine (which I experience extensively on my Blackbook) still exists on the newest MBPs (i.e., Santa Rosa). My Blackbook has featured no less than three of the major known (or "unknown" if you are Apple) issues--the whine, the screwed-up trackpad, and persistent difficulties awaking from sleep--and I need to find another option. I suspect that the whine is still there on Santa Rosa MBPs, but I figure that it may be drastically reduced. I also hear that the trackpad is much better on MBPs than on Macbooks. Thanks.
It is definitely the processor. I have had the exact same problem (as stated above) and I am sure that it is the processor (I know because I used a program to modulate the processor load with a slider and you could hear the noise change pitch until--finally--it went away). My hypothesis is that when the MagSafe adapter is plugged in, the computer switches over to a more high performance mode in which the computer uses more of the available resources, meaning that the processor has to do less work, and thus goes into an idle state more often. And yes, I think that frequency=intensity here. Another hypothesis might be that the adapter somehow amplifies the noise electromagnetically (this might make sense since the MagSafe both--obviously--conducts electricity and is secured by a magnet). At any rate, I didn't think that the noise was the processor at first, either, but as it turns out it is. And despite what others say, I think it's an Intel screw-up and not Apple, although Apple should take responsibility (more responsibility, that is). Indeed, I have had all sorts of problems with my Intel Macs, whereas I never, not once, had a problem my PPC Macs.

Further to what someone posted in another thread, you can actually record the CPU whine in Garageband! It is at a lower frequency than the whine I actually hear (the microphone need only sample at ~8kHz) but is very distinctive and clearly heard. It even changes frequency on chaning CPU usage.
How this can be "within spec" is beyond me. Just thought I would record and post it before TNT pick up the laptop for refund on Monday.
You can hear a demonstration recording of the whine here:
http://ned.corpus.cam.ac.uk/~fjb31/
JamesYes, it's not great. I think that's an aberration of the sampling - although it could be due to OS scheduling of Garage Band.
What is also interesting is that in the recording the whine is softer when the power cable is unplugged. To me the whine is much louder - this might be due to the sound being transmitted better through the case, or ears more sensitive to lower frequencies. From the recording you get the impression that both are of the same intensity.
It would be interesting to record the sound at 44kHz find its true frequency and intensity and judge the human response to that - an oscilloscope trace would be good. It's not ideal recording the sound from within the case.
One thing I haven't seen anyone comment on is the effect this has on using the MBP as a recording studio/for Podcasts etc. The background noise when both cores are on (and not heavily loaded) is sufficient to badly affect the quality of this.

MacBook Buzzing/Whine coming from top left
I have a C2D, 2.2GHz, late 2007 model 13" white MacBook (not pro). I am experiencing a whine/buzz from the top left of my keyboard that starts as soon as the grey screen appears during boot. I have tried everything related to the CPU whine people talk about (just google Macbook or macbook pro and whine or buz) but to no avail (except using CHUD to disable one of the cores, so by everything I mean SMC and PRAM reset, QuietMBP and ShhMBP) none of which has helped in the slightest. The buzz is quite prominent, I can hear it currently as it sits on my desk next to me and I type on my desktop (even though I can hear the desktop fans going too, so the room is not utterly quiet). I don't know what else to do, I'm considering re-formating and re-installing the OS to see if some update/software caused the issue (I doubt it, but am at a loss of what else to try). Anybody have any other suggestions?
The reason I have not disabled the 2nd core using CHUD is I don't really want to reduce performance by limiting myself to one core (also, if it matters, I had apple install 2GB of ram rather than the normal 1GB when I ordered).
Any help at all would be nice, the noise is literally starting to drive me bananas!
Also, I checked for run-away processes in Activity Monitor, and even thought it might be fan related rather than processor at one point, and installed and tried fan control software, which made zero difference. The noise does seem worse when the computer is running a more CPU intensive task. You're right, I doubt that it's a speaker issue but I just wanted to check anyway.
What you are describing sounds just like the problem I have, except that my noise goes away when I use quietMBP. I usually have to use a setting of 90 or so in quietMBP. In fact I can change the pitch of the noise by changing the quietMBP settings.
When power is connected,I believe the power brick works in harmony with the macbook to produce the lovely sound you're hearing. I had Apple replace my power brick, but that didn't solve anything. Once the brick is disconnected from the macbook, the power brick will stop making the noise, but the CPU whine will continue. I heard that logic board replacement sometimes fixes the problem, but I didn't want Apple to rip my computer apart, so I just decided to live with the noise. After a while (~3 months) you get used to it.
So the only solution, as far as I know, is to replace the logic board. Keep replacing it until it stops. It's not present in 100% of macbooks, so if you keep replacing that board, you'll finally end up with a good one.
I trust you read this already:
http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/159/the-quiet-mac
By the way, if the buzzing is louder when you increase CPU usage, more than likely you have a busted resister or capacitor on your board. The solution to that, of course, would be to replace the logic board--since the power transformer assembly sits on the logic board. -
for some reason my MBP *running off battery* doesnt seem to whine when my tv is on and im aboue 4 -5 feet away
i turned off the volume on my tv and its still gone for some reason...
im still tryin to decide whyI've discovered what causes the whine (at least in my MBP 1.83 GHz)(and it was mentioned in one of the other whining, errr, whine-related forums). The whine stops when I deactivate the second core on my processor (install the CHUD tools from the first disc of your OS X discs to do this). If it really annoys you, do this when you're not doing anything processor intensive.
Personally, the whine doesn't bother me. The Dell I'm working on now has a similar whine and I just ignore it. I find it funny how people act like this whine is ruining their life. "Ever since I got my MBP and it whined, my wife left me, my kids left me, my dog left me, I can't drive, I can't sleep, I can't even eat!" I do understand the frustration of buying a $2000+ notebook and having this issue but still; I hear more whine from the forums than I do my computer! Hopefully the issue is resolved so the electronic whine from the billboards will die down. I mean no offense but still, come on! -
First Whine or speaker noise?
My MBP week 11 is now almost two month old. No noise no problems except battery exchange and some heat. While processing a movie with toast a very loud noise started from the middle of the key board. Sounded like a jet taking off. Shut down the machine and when I restarted the noise was still there but very quiet and lasted about one minute and then when away and has not retrun.
DOES THIS SOUND LIKE THE FAMOUS WHINE OR A SPEAKER NOISE?
Thanks
GrumpIts not the whine, that only occurs when the
processor is idling, and from what I can make out,
the processor would certainly not be idling with what
you were doing! It wont be the speaker noise, because
the speakers are located in the grills at both sides
of the keyboard, not underneath it. The noise you are
describing is probably just the fans running at full
capacity to cool your macbook pro down during some
particularly processor intensive work, and as such
nothing to worry about.
Thanks for the reply. The machine has been very quiet except this one time
Hope thats the last ime. Again thanks!

Screeching whine when pushing graphics card
Hi! I have a month-old T61p with the nVidia Quadro FX 570M. Recently, I installed Gentoo on it, and so far everything is good except that when I ran glxgears my laptop makes this screeching, whine sound. My problem is like this one: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=254947
After Google-ing a bit, this problem seems to be somewhat common. Is this something I should be worried about, or is it normal behavior?? I rarely run graphics-intensive programs, so I can live with it.The sound is coil whine. It's a common "issue" with vgas and psus. The sound deoends on the load level of the vga or psu. The more load the louder the sound. Without 3d load it stops. As the vga causes a lot of power demand the psu can also "whine" exactly following the vgas load situation. That means it is not easy to determine if it is the psu or the vga that causes the sound you hear. Anyway it is no real problem except for the sound itself. It is no sign of dying or a defect.

I just received this new graphics card today and noticed when doing benchmarks, the card whines. As the intensity ramps up, so does the whine, when the graphics test is done, the whine stops. I've read about other people having this exact same problem, is there a solution?
Thanks.I don't have another computer to test it in. However, I have done a bit more testing with benchmarking... I've discovered that the whining seems to only occur when doing the Windows WEI test. I've run FurMark, Cinebench and 3DMark 11 and I do not hear an whining while running those tests- even in extreme mode testing with 3DMark 11. Perhaps the WEI test taxes the circuitry more than "real world" usage??

HP G62 B50SQ CPU Whine [HELP PLEASE]
Hello,
I have one HP G62 B50SQ laptop 2 months old now. Two weeks ago, it didn't powered on anymore so I sent it for warranty. They replaced the motherboard and the AC adapter. Ever since the laptop is emitting one very high pitch sound from the processor area which, as I identified on the Internet, I suppose it is CPU whine. The sound gets really annoying if I connect any USB device to the laptop (mice, or external hdd). Also the sound is present with the same intensity on AC or DC. I confess that it is very disturbing because I work most of the time in a quiet environment and I would like to know how it is possible to fix this. I've read on the Internet about disabling C4 state in BIOS, but the BIOS version that I currently have (F.47 , 2/15/2011) does not have this option. Also, If I send it back does the warranty apply or it is something that I should be supposed to live with? Thank you for your replies.Hi,
My suggestion is to send it back, they must fix this for you
Regards,
BH

Long Load Times on Graphic Intensive Games
I'm experiencing some absurdly long load times (1-3 hours) with many games (SPORE, Portal, X:3, etc...) that I believe may be related to how graphically intensive they are. Older games with lower graphics quality (WoW, Civ 4, etc...) load up fine.
When I load any newer game the icon appears in the tray and the computer does nothing else for at least an hour, whereupon the program loads and begins playing immediately--often without any further delays or issues.
I also use Boot Camp to run Windows Vista (Ultimate 32) and experience no delays when running SPORE on Windows.

Image processing from .txt file onto an intensity graph
I am doing a mini project in my class and I was wondering if anyone could help me. It about image processing but I am bit stuck.
Heres the idea:
"An image is really nothing more than a 2D array of data. The value of every element in the array corresponds to the brightness of the image at that point.
In this project you will create a VI which loads a 2D array of data and then displays it on the screen using the Intensity Graph. Three example files (boats.txt, gordon.txt and parrot.txt) are available on the module webpage that you can use. However, you can also use any other black and white image you like, but will need to convert it to a “text image” first. To do this you can use some software called “ImageJ” which is available on the computers and is free to download.
You can vary the brightness of an image by adding the same value to every element in the array.
The contrast of an image is adjusted by multiplying every element in the array by the same value. Using numerical controls and simple array mathematics, you should adjust the brightness and contrast of your displayed image.
Some other ideas that you could try with image manipulation are:
o Invert an image (change black to white and white to black)"
First I am having problems putting my picture onto the graph. It is in the write file but the colours are not correct and the image has rotated 90 degrees. I will upload my VI so far when I get back onto my computer.
Would really appricate the help! Thank you for readingHi charlthedancer,
Here is an example to get you started.
Kind regards,
GajanS
