Whining background noise when recording VO

I have a Blue Icicle digital converter for my Shure 8900 microphone connected by USB. When I record my VO the output is terrific except that there is also a loud whining noise in the background that I can't figure out how to get rid of. Any ideas?

Try a shorter or better quality USB cable and see if it helps.

Im trying to record a slideshow for keynote with music soundtrack coming in time with the clicks, but even when I plug a mike cable into what looks like the mike socket, i still hear background noise such as me tapping the key board...
any tips? Is there a way of turning the microphone off completely??

Go to System Preferences / Sound and click on the Input button. You should see two items listed in the device menu: the Internal Microphone and Line In. (There may be others if you also are using your USB or Firewire ports for input devices.)
Select Internal Microphone and adjust the Input Volume control to the far left (minimum). This will mute the computer's internal microphone.
Then select the Line-In (or other device) and adjust the input level as needed to make your recording.

Thanks for your reply . I've removed the cover when doing both tests I mentioned. The earphone I used is at good condition and I don't see any problem with it. I've also reinstalled the iOS as your instruction, but still no luck, the video sound still has noise.
I've decided to export the video file to my PC to see if I can hear sound better or not, as it's hard to hear and sound except noise with the external speaker on my iPhone even at maximum volume. On my PC I had to increased playback volume to 100%, set volume booster to 300% and applied noise reduction plugin (I use Media Player Classic on Windows 7) to get an acceptable sound (still noise but better than the original). If I don't boost the volume, it's hard to hear anything. I don't expect it to be crystal clear like the voice memo (using the bottom mic), but too much noise like this is really bad.
So I think it appears to be a hardware-related problem. I will later consider to send it to a phone repair shop or keep it and accept this bad video sound problem . In Vietnam we just have Apple authorized resellers but don't have any official Apple repair shops, that's why I'm still confused as I don't really trust those phone repair shops to handle my iPhone. Anyway, thanks again for your comment .
P.S: it maybe a little off-topic, but do you know any video recording app that using the bottom mic ?

High Pitched Noise When Recording From iSight Camera

I apologize if this has been asked before. I did a search on here as well as with Google.
Whenever I record a video clip using the built in iSight camera I notice that there is a constant high-pitched noise embedded in the clip. You don't hear the noise during recording, and otherwise the audio is crystal clear during playback, but I can't seem to figure out what is causing this noise. Video clips I import into iMovie don't have this problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem? How can I prevent this from happening with future recordings?

I am sorry to report that you are one of about ten people who have posted here about audio noises during video recordings with MacBooks. I listened to your YouTube clip, and I believe you are hearing something. I can hear the muffled "thumping" of background noises being amplified because there is no voice or other close sound being recorded in your video, but my old ears do not hear anything high pitched in your video (or anywhere else for that matter.)
I am sure Apple is aware of the issue, but with so small a number reporting this issue among thousands of MacBooks sold, I understand why there is not yet a kBase technical article on this subject.
I expect that Apple searches its warranty & repair work for quality issues and trends, but, if you have not (and do not) contact Apple or your retailer for service on this issue, please report your problem via MacBook Feedback so Apple can accurately record the magnitude of this problem. Unlike posting in this user forum, "Feedback" reports go directly to Apple.
We users who post here have found no solution yet, so the problem appears to require professional service for resolution.
However, if you are willing to try a test, please post back and tell us whether video or movie clip recording applications other than Apple's give the same audio noise you hear when using iSight with iMovie. Apple's QuickTime Pro has already been tested and found to exhibit the problem.
If you have access to an external microphone that can be located away from your Mac while you record video, you could also test to see whether you are recording a physical sound coming from your Mac or electronic noise being produced within your Mac's circuitry.

DVR620KU Makes Background Noise When Dubbing

Hi, I recently purchased a DVR620KU. I started dubbing VHS tapes to DVD+R. The VHS tapes sound good when I play them alone, but as soon as I begin dubbing to DVD I can hear background noise, like a persistent light tapping sound. Thus the DVDs end up with this background noise that isn't present in the original tapes. I tried different DVD speeds. I also removed the machine completely, plugged it into a different wall socket, and tried dubbing without the unit connected to any other devices. The noise was still present when I played back the new DVD. The noise is not present in DVDs that were not dubbed by this machine. At this point I am convinced that the Toshiba DVR620KU is the root cause of the background noise. Do you know what Toshiba's explanation is, and what is the recommended solution? Thanks.

The noise is initiating from the VHS playback, and then being written into the DVDs. The noise only occurs when the DVD is either dubbing or recording the L1 circuit (even when the L1 circuit is empty, the VCR playback is still affected while L1 is being recorded to DVD). When the DVD player is off, the noise is not present in the VCR playback. I'm not sure how to determine whether the noise is originating mechanically or eletronically. But it ends up as part of the sound transmission through the speakers. I'm not hearing something banging inside the machine, if that's what you mean. If you tapped on a microphone repeatedly while it was recording, this is what the output would sound like.
So far I've identified 7 VHS tapes that are affected by this problem, and 8 VHS tapes that resulted in excellent DVDs. I just burned a perfect DVD this morning. All the tapes are T-120 cassettes that were originally purchased as blanks. Several different brands and grades are represented. All of the "bad" tapes weigh more than 240 grams (average 257g), and all of the "good" tapes weigh less than 230 grams (average 204g). I know that blank T-120 cassettes generally become lighter over time, which means the "heavy" cassettes are probably generally older than the "light" cassettes. This also implies that the material was generally recorded with older VHS players on the "heavy" cassettes. The transition between the "heavy" and "light" tapes was probably around early-90's based upon the material on the tapes and when I think the data was originally recorded. So I don't know whether or not the weight actually means anything, although it could because mass can obviously impact mechanical vibrations. But the difference could also be that different tracking technologies were involved with the older, or heavier, cassettes and/or the machines they were involved with at the time the material was recorded.
I read on a different forum that VHS cassette tracking imperfections may be present all along, but they don't become audible until the digitization process amplifies some of frequencies involving the imperfections. I don't know much about that, but to me, it's plausible that the frequency processing and flow path out of the machine changes when the DVD player is recording. I'm not sure about that either, but something is definitely happening when the DVD recorder is on that affects the VCR playback on these heavier, older cassettes.
So, at this point, I can carry on knowing which tapes will be useful, and which will be problematic with this Toshiba dubbing process. The problem is what to do about it. Perhaps if I purchased another unit and ran the VHS output from the "slave" unit to the L1 circuit on the Toshiba, the problem might be fixed. Or, maybe this unit is defective, and if I exchanged it for a new Toshiba, the problem will be fixed. Or, maybe the Toshiba design includes this sensitivity, and the only solution may be to return it for cash refund and purchase a competetive product. Or, maybe the digitization process is what it is, and these old tapes are what they are, and there is no solution.
You said you have a DVR620KU and you've never experienced this problem. I don't suppose you have any old VHS T-120 cassettes that weigh ~250-260 grams? If you do, I would be curious to know whether you have the same issue. Thanks.

Others can hear a ton of background noise when talking on the iphone 5

When I'm using my headset to talk with others the background noise is extremely loud. I have tried the earpods that came with the phone and the background noise cuts in and out and have tried Bose headsets and the noise sounds awaful....like a wind tunnel to others. Any advice on how to help or take care of this problem?

Every time I try to talk to my wife when using the Iphone 5 with Earpods, or any other headset for that matter, she complains that the mic on my phone headset is picking up EVERY SINGLE SOUND and amplifying it so loud that she can hardly hear my voice over all the background noise.... I have replecated this problem now 10 different iphone5 of my friends.... which is every single iphone 5. Without fail they all have this same issue. It is not my wifes phone either. People always complain when I am using my headset. ESPECIALLY when I am trying to comply with new laws requireing hands free phone usage. It is unacceptable for Apple to have failed in fixing this problem. I have spoken with several customer service reps/Genius's about this and there is no fix to date. I have upgraded my iphone5 to all latest versions of iOS with the hopes that Apple will one day fix this problem with a software update. Will someone please help us!!!!! I doubt my Apple loyalty will last without a fix to this massive inconvienence.

There is no filter in FCE that can eliminate background noise separately from the sound you want to preserve.

High pitch noise when recording audio using internal mic

The issue I am having is with the internal mic. When recording audio using quicktime or garageband.It is a high pitch noise that stays whether i am speaking or not. The fix i found was to lower the input volume of the mic in system preferences. However, this causes my voice to be recorded so low that audio is barely usable unless volume is all the way up. Looking around the web I found this gem:

This help me get rid of the high pitch noise for Garageband. The noise still there for Quicktime. Any ideas on how I can keep the same mic input volume with out having to listen to the high pitch noise?

There are some sound settings in PRAM, although I think it's only for sound output.
Also, as a test, I would create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane

Log out and log in to the new account (do not use Fast User Switching). In the new account, try recording something using QuickTime, and note if this problem recurs. If it does not, you have eliminated a few possible causes, such as a problem with the overall system installation or a hardware issue, and isolated the problem to something in your normal user account.

Lessening background noise when Amplifying a sound file (post noise reduction)

I have a video I have been tryng to clean up, that was filmed in an environment with some amount of background noise.
I managed to get the audio cleaned up to a leveI was happy with (but still retained a minimal amount of almost unoticable noise to keep the voise still sounding ok).
It sounds fine and perfectly loud in headphones but on some computer speakers even turned up to full volume you can barely hear it. (in the future I will try to film with a higher volume)
I attempted a few different methods to Amplify the sound slightly but this also increases the reminant of background noise.
Along with the basic Amplify, and Normalise I have also tried using a Hard Limiter (I don't know if I was doing it right though as it also increased the Background noise)
Can someone provide any pointers to only amplify the Voice and not the background noise? or possibly even suggest a way I can clean up the reminant background noise without causing the voice to become hollow and Tinny? Obviously redoing the Noise removal process just makes the voice more Hollow.
In the future should I Amplify first and then run the noise removal?

In Audition, Noise Reduction always seems to work best if applied in small steps, with different settings for each. The setting that makes absolutely the most difference is the FFT size you use. The thing to do at the outset is to use the default setting (4096 I think) but don't take too much off with that. Then change the FFT size to the maximum setting, take a new noise print from the results of your previous pass, and take the rest off with this setting. By doing this, you'll find that you can take away more noise before artefacts start to creep in.
It doesn't actually matter about the level of your signal when you apply NR, but to be sensible about it, in order to be able to monitor the results effectively, you should normalize it first, to around -1 or -2dB. The concept of amplifying a signal without amplifying the noise in it implies making the dynamics non-linear, and whilst that's possible to a degree with the Dynamics Processor, it's generally not a good idea - it makes everything seem completely unnatural-sounding.

Crackling noise when recording

I am using an IMAC and the Steinberg CI2 interface to record and I am getting a crackling sound when recording. Does anyone know what this might be?

i have a similar problem with a yamaha mw12cx usb mixer and a macbook pro. i set the audio preferences to the specifications in the owners manual 44.1 khz on the input and 48 khz on the output and the crackling noise immediately went away. this worked for about 15 minutes of recording a narration but when the crackling started again, i couldn't set the output at 48 khz, it would change right back to 44.1khz. am i going to have to break the recordings up into 10 minute pieces?

Excessive background noise when using Wired Headset with iPhone5

I use my wired headset all the time on my iPhone 5 64gb. Driving working you name it. I get complaints over and over again that my background noise is very often louder than I am. A friend of mine experiences the same issues. So I know its not just me. I have already gone to the Apple Store and had the phone replaced but I still get complaints. I just called Apple and they said they have never heard of the issue. It's my biggest complaint about the iPhone 5 mainly because its how I use it most of the time.
Anyone else having this problem? If so, lets make sure Apple is aware of it so it can be fixed.

yes, my iPhone 5, when used with a corded headset, picks up and amplifies background noise to earsplitting levels. Same for the 2 other people I know with iPhone 5s. It makes using a corded headset all but impossible in most situations, unless I am in a quiet environment in which I am not doing anything.
