Whining Power supply yet again..........Macbook 2.16GHz New Rev

So i got my new Macbook 2.16Ghz C2D today and expected it's avery lush machine. There is however one problem and i've had this with every mac notebook i've ever owned. The whining from the power supply/Macbook when it's on charge.
It's like a high pitch digital noise which constantly bugs you in the background.
I'll give Applecare a call on monday.

Seems like this will never be remedied across the board.
My 17" MBP still has the issue in the form of a "hiss".
Maybe its the nature of the beast.

  • G5 20" iMac Power Supply Issues Again!

Well, both of our old G5 iMacs have had the logic boards replaced under the extension repair program. Also one of of them had the PSU replaced as well under the same program. Well, now the other one has gone south. I pulled the power supply out and it had several bulging capacitors so I replaced them. However, I also noticed that there is a fried surface mount transistor right next to position R4 on the under side of the board. I've replaced the caps but I can't figure out the values of the fried transistor. I've taken some pics of it. I'm really hoping to track down the part and fix it myself. However, if not, might anyone have a replacement PSU for this 20" imac or know where I can get one inexpensively?
    2nd question:
I went though the process of a service agreement on the Apple site. I entered the problems and got to the final page and it quoted me $74.95. However, I'm not sure what this charge is for. Do I ship the entire iMac in? or is this for a replacement PSU? I'd really like to make a trip to the Apple Store but we're stuck at home with a newborn for the next several days.
Anyway, any information would be great.
    Thanks much,
    Robet

    Hey Robet,
service agreement on the Apple site. I entered the problems and got to the final page and it quoted me $74.95
Hmm but you wouldn't have a service agreement on this machine. Call as DaddyPaycheck suggests.
I also noticed that there is a fried surface mount transistor right next to position R4 on the under side of the board. I've replaced the caps but I can't figure out the values of the fried transistor.
Wow you must be pretty good to want to try to replace that SMT transistor! I'd be afraid that there would be other damage as well: diodes, power ics, switch mode chips etc. I've got 4 G5 supplies here and only one worked after the cap swap. I didn't feel trouble shooting the entire supply was worth the time.
What I've done is more on the lines of this:
    http://gallery.me.com/iamkimc#100033
Actually any ATX (non Dell) supply will work.
I extract 2 12V leads from the hard drive power plug using a pin extractor like here:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KQDS6G
I bought this but so far only use the top one. It works well. If you're only doing a few you can use some of the tricks here:
    http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-88644.html
If you look at the iMac G5 ALS pinout:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/images/imacg5power_supplypinout.gif
and compare it to the 20 pin ATX:
    http://www.subedartech.net/docs/pc/connectoratxpinout.GIF
On the right you see that the difference in the first 20 pins is: Pin 12 -12 VDC and Pin 18 - 5VDC. So I extract those two pins clip them off. Shrink tube the ends and replace them w/ 2 yellow leads (+12VDC) that I extract from the hard drive leads. Once cleanly extracted they just push and lock in place.
Note that pins 11 (black, ground) and 22 (Brown + 24VDC) are not covered. If you have the early ALS you don't need these two leads (go figure) but if you have the later or 20" you need a separate supply for those leads. I use a old 24VDC PowerBook supply for that. Model M7783 it puts out 24VDC at 1.0A.
It's kind of messy but all the parts fit behind the iMac and aren't seen.
Also it seems like you're watching your pennies w/ the new baby. (been there)
we're stuck at home with a newborn for the next several days
    More like months with us.
Good luck and I hope you're sleeping.

  • Macbook Pro power supply and grounding.

Hey Apple people. I noticed something disconcerting with the power supply on my MacBook Pro 13" (non-retina)
I have a stainless steel metal table in my kitchen. It is the same type of stainless steel table you find in restaurants.
I have my 13" MacBook Pro in a Speck See-thru case.
The MacBook Pro in it's case is sitting on a Rain Design "M Stand".
The Rain Design "M Stand" is sitting on the stainless steel table.
I am wearing a short sleeve shirt.
I am sitting on a fabric covered chair at the table.
The battery was getting low so I got out my power supply, which is the power brick with the two prong plug adapter.
I plugged this into a power strip and the other end into the computer.
While touching the case of the computer with one hand and leaning on the stainless steel table with my other bare arm. I felt a vibration through the fingers that were in contact with the MacBook Pro. I knew what was going on, and I got really concerned.
    I tried an experiment.
I got out the extension cord that came with the MacBook Pro power supply and I changed out the two prong plug on the power supply for the extension cord. The extension cord has a grounding post.
When I plugged the power supply back into the power strip and connected the power supply to the MacBook Pro. I no longer felt a vibrating sensation when I was in contact with the stainless steel table and the computer.
I have other MacBook Pro power supplies and I always use the grounded extension cable with them, because it is located at my regular workstation area. This stainless steel table is located in my kitchen, and I was eating dinner and watching YouTube videos.
Just thought you would like to all know that when you don't use the grounded cable on your MacBook Pro. you become the ground.
Never using this power supply anywhere again without the grounded cable.
    Thank you for your time.

It depends on what you are doing.  Yes, the power supply can get hot.  This is normal.

  • US MacBook power supply in Ireland

I'm heading to the states next week and thinking of buying a macbook to bring back to Ireland with me. Is there any problem with the power supply's or are the a univeral voltage.
I know that I'll have to get a different adapter for the plug but is that all?
    Mick.

ackd, It will work fine, they are multi-voltage, you will just have to buy a local power supply for your MacBook.
Taken from the spec. page on Apples site:
    Electrical and environmental requirements
    * Meets ENERGY STAR requirements
    * Line voltage: 100-240V AC
    * Frequency: 50Hz to 60Hz

  • Power supply results

I currently have my iMac in the shop for a power supply issue repair, for those of you who have had this repair done in the past what kind of results did you have? Was the computer good as new? Did you have more problems related to the power supply? Did the power supply fail again?
How many times does a mac have to be repaired before Apple will replace it?

Dagster-My computer was doing exactly what your computer is doing, shutting off on its own.
Here is the story, I'm sure you all have one of your own or have heard it before but here goes.
Last Tuesday the 30th the computer just started shutting off. So I called Applecare and the rep had me unplug the mac and restart it holding the power button, but that didn't fix it, and then cell phone cut out and I had to call back. The next rep told me that I wasn't eligable for phone support and it would cost money for him to help me. SO I hung up and got out the yellow pages. I found a local service center that wasn't an Apple Store.(I'm not opposed to the Apple Store, this location was simply closer) So I took the computer in Wednesday morning and they told me they would try to have a tech look at it before the weekend but if not, I was down for Monday for sure. Not 20 minutes later I get a call saying it sounded like a power supply issue and to call the SOS line and ask for a CS code because this is known problem and Apple will pay to fix it. I do that and I'm feeling better about my computer being in the shop. I don't hear from the shop I call Monday afternoon and the person I talk to tells me that the tech got busy and hadn't look at my computer yet, Ok, that happens I understand. So I call Wednesday afternoon and they tell me they didn't get it fixed yet and that the tech would try to look at it again Thurday(today) but if not, Friday for sure. HUMPF. I'm hoping that the added time for repairs means that they are doing a quality job. I also fine it odd they have only called me once, but the one time they did call it was a good thing. When I dropped off the computer the office didn't look like the type of place that would string you along for no reason so I am curious as to how they act once I get my computer back.

  • Need a piece for my power supply cable

So my mag safe power supply for my Macbook Pro has the two little "hooks" that pop out and allow you to wrap the cable around them for travel. One of the hooks broke and during the process of trying to get it fixed through Apple, by replacing the hook, I was advised you have to replace the whole thing.
I was wondering if anyone knew any place to get these little guys or had an extra one lying around that they would be willing to sell via a Paypal payment.
    Thanks!

Alternative suggestion I gave to one of my clients: buy another power adapter, then use the "broken" one permanently at your desk. So rather than rushing out of the house, forgetting to pack your charger, instead leave one of the chargers in your bag. When you get home, you plug in to the "permanent" desk charger. The one on the desk would never be coiled up, or coiled up in a different way with wire ties or something. And if the charger is under your desk, well, out-of-sight, out-of-mind.
I've done this for years, ever since that first time I forgot my charger and blew my school assignment because no one on campus had a compatible charger I could borrow. While it is an additional expense, it's also a comfort that when I break the charger, I have an immediate spare, or have a second charger for troubleshooting.

  • 2 prong ungrounded power supply safe?

I just bought a back-up power supply for my Macbook.
It is an official Apple Magsafe brick.
    [URL="http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MagSafe-Adapter-MacBook-A1184/dp/B002GU57E6"]
My current power supply is grounded this one is not. I'm worried about where static discharges will go when passed to the computer if there is no ground. BUT it seems weird Apple would make an unsafe power supply.
    Any insight is appreciated.
    Best,
    Kkamin

You can buy the grounded three prong extension cord if you're worried about being grounded.

  • Humming sound coming from power supply after new battery update?!

i've heard of MB whining.. but not power supplies...
it's new with the latest battery update.
it stops when i touch the power supply.
it also stops when the processors rev up.
    is this normal??
it's annoying as ****, and it never used to do it.
    any help will do.

    Hi, Dan:
I don't have your model PC, so here are some generic instructions.
Turn on the PC and at the beginning of the HP welcome screen, tap the F10 key to gain access to the BIOS.
There should be a menu to Save Defaults and Exit, when you go to exit the BIOS.
That is all there is to it.
I can't find your model number to give you the link to the audio driver from the support and driver page.
If you have the IDT audio chip, below is the latest driver for it.
Or let me know what model audio device you have and I'll see what I can find if it is not the IDT audio.

  • Antec Power Supply and K8N Neo 2

I have just noticed this comment in the Tweaktown Review of this board and the Abit AV8 and the fact that Antec are still looking at the problem. http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rlid=87725
Important note regarding the Socket 939 platform and the use of power supplies. It is a given that when you step up to this level of performance, you are simply going to have to have a solid performing PSU. If you are in the market for this type of system board and don’t have a quality power supply yet, please note that I was unable to get the Antec line of power supplies to work with any stability with either of these boards. I will see about contacting them and trying to find out if they are looking at this issue, but as of right now I would recommend staying away from this brand until the problem is rectified. This is really a shame, too, as the Antec is one of the best performing brands on the market, but stability is a huge issue. When I changed out to a Thermaltake model and left all other settings alone, the system worked flawlessly.

    No problem.
The only reason I posted it is that the power supply problem seems to rear its head on all/most of the AMD 64 boards and it looks as though the psu manufacturers are going to need to sort out their specifications. The factor other than the 12 volt rail amperage is the stability as it appears that the problem with the Antec was stability of the 5vsb rail so using cheap psu's may be a thing of the past.

  • W510 135w Power supply questions? Differences...

    Hi,
Recently I purchased a new 135w power supply for my w510 off of amazon. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0038LYW8O/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00)
When I got the power supply in the mail I plugged it in. Within only 5 minutes it got VERY hot and then just stopped working.
When I compared it to my old power supply I noticed slight differences. I attached some images below. Can someone give me some insight to this? Did I get a knock off or incorrect power supply?
The left side is the new one, the right is the original shipped with my laptop.
    Link to picture
The first thing I noticed was the icon on the bottom left is yellow on the new one, it's not on the original. What does that mean?
Also different sized text, PIN's and icons in the center.
The other big difference was the plugs that go into the power outlet. Again... New on the left, original on the right.
    Link to picture
I have no idea if anything makes a difference that I mentioned. I'm just trying to figure out if I should exchange the one I got for another or get a refund. Hopefully someone can help. Thanks!

    I don't believe it's a copy.
Both the different FRU numbers are listed on this site and match the 135W adapter FRU numbers.  I would suggest that the difference is source manufacturer, Lenovo doesn't rely on one source for particular components alone; it would be too risky.

  • Power Supply Help for 466mhz G4 - where can i get a good deal.

I need to find a replacement for the power supply in the machine. It is an original 466mhz g4, agp graphics. The power supply says 126w max and had AC BEL on it.
Can anyone help me out in finding a cheap place to get a power supply that fits this machine perfectly? Looking for a reputable dealer (obviously).
    Thanx in advance.

    Hi Nelson,
You're machine is a Digital Audio (the only G4 to have shipped with 466MHz processors), and the PSU is 338W - which should be adequate for most things. Why do you need a new power supply?
If you need a new one, it won't be cheap. You can try this place:

  • Power Supply "Powered-Off" State

I have power supplies in Slot 1 and Slot 2.
Both power supplies show fully operable (power, voltage, etc) in details, however the Slot 1 power supply shows "Powered-Off"
I have tried both N+1 and Non-Redundant power policies.
    Thanks for help in advance.

Should be Non-Redundant with only 2 supplies.  Once selected try to re-acknowledge the chassis.  I was set these global polices first off, power and uplink # and save, acknowledge and allow time to discover and update.  What rev you using ?  Not sure of exact rev's but saw several power supply and fan bugs resolved in newer 1.4(3) code.

  • HP Compaq 8000 Elite power supply upgarde

I have a 2010 HP Compaq 8000 Elite and need to upgrade the power supply in order to run my new Radeon HD 6850 Graphics card. After much research i found that this particular computer's motherboard does not have a normal 20-pin or 24-pin power supply but instead uses 2 separate 4-pin connections for the PWR and PWRCPU supplies and a third cable which i believe to be an ancient and outdated 6 pin auxiliary power cable (http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#aux) for the PWRCMD supply. I Also found that all power is run through the motherboard to each separate piece of hardware in the computer and therefor most likely has a limit for the max power supply possible. Is there some sort of power supply that will both fit in the PSU slot (which is not the standard PSU size, but instead measures about 6" x 5.75" x 3.75") and will also be able to connect to and supply enough power to the mother board?!? Or am i stuck with a lousy 320W??? Please Help!!!

    Maverickv2,
You will not be able to upgrade that PSU, model # 508154-001. It is not possible with those connectors. The most absurd item was that the hardware (drives) actually are powered off the motherboard. (Just like you said).

  • New power supply has no -5 V?!

So I have an 865PE NEO2 board that is about 3 years old.  I recently had a power supply die, so I purchased a new Antec 480W TruePower 2.0 supply.  I noticed in the BIOS that the voltage reading for the -5V line was missing.  The machine seemed to run ok, and the supply passes all tests I could find, but this worried me.  Sandra reported some different voltage on the -5V line (3.5 V maybe?) so that worried me too.
So I looked at my new supply, and lo and behold there is no -5 V line coming out of the supply.  The pin isn't connected to anything on the motherboard connector.  Apparently the ATX spec was updated to remove this at some point, but I'm concerned that my old NEO2 may have been relying on that line for something.
    Thoughts?
    Bret

I just replaced the power supply in my main box. I took out the old "iBest" 550W 20pin, and put a new Enermax Noise taker 475W w/24pins.
The new 24pin PSU dose not use the -5V. I had to use a 20 to 24pin Adapter to get it to work, only because the 24pin from the PSU would not plug into my mobo. Once I modified the adapter(cut the extra 4pins of the side that plugs into the mobo(now its only a 20 to 20pin adapter  )) and got it to Plug in to my mobo, it worked Great with out the -5V supply.
