Whining Sound: Poll:  5400 or 7200 Hard Drive?

Let's take a quick straw poll. Those of you who have (or who do not have) whining, just reply like this:;
YES - 7200 (yes it whines, 7200 rpm hard drive)
Just curious.

Looks like this is an isolated incident then. Either that, or nobody is interested in the poll...

  • Is there a big difference between 5400 and 7200 hard drives?

I dont know which one to get. Should i upgrade to the 7200. Right now i have a 7200 hard drive in my powermac g5 and its great so would it be alot slower with a 5400 hard drive. Also to upgrade the drive do i have to order it online or can they upgrade it in the apple store?

Barefeats did some tests, and they conclude the Momentus 7200 is worth the upgrade. Also note this drive is slower than some other newer drives, so you could even get a greater advantage from other models. I've bolded pertinent information. Please note most performance increases are not seen in everyday emailing, web surfing, etc.
    http://www.barefeats.com/hard56.html
    Their Conclusion:
    ANALYSIS
The Seagate Momentus 7200.1 takes notebook drive speed to a whole new level. It's not as fast as the fastest 2.5" (ed) 7200rpm drives but it's impressive nevertheless. And its quiet. It's a no brainer for a PowerBook internal drive replacement or as an external drive in a FireWire 800 enclosure.
WILL A 7200RPM NOTEBOOK DRIVE DRAIN MY BATTERY FASTER?
The short answer is, "Probably not." You see, the 7200rpm drives are as much as 28% faster doing random reads and writes compared to the 5400rpm drives. They are as much as 80% faster than 4200rpm drives. Yet the Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 uses the same amount of power as the Travelstar 5K100. The Seagate Momentus 7200.1 uses only 10% more power than the Momentus 4200.2. The Momentus 5400.3 uses less power than the Momentus 4200.2. My theory is that the "speed to power" ratio is so good with the 7200rpm drives that the net effect on the battery is negligible.

  • Difference between 5400 and 7200 hard drive

Looking at buying a new MBP - can't decide on the 750 G 5400 HD or the 500G 7200 HD. I like the extra space for photos on the 5400 HD but will the 7200 be a snapper unit ? I can always use an extra drive for storage - but is the speed benefit noticeable ?  I can't seem to find any recent reviews. They all seem a few years old. Plus - not sure whether the bigger drive will be just as snappy (more space) as the faster drive (possibly fulling up).
    Advice anyone ?

And probably to your surprise, they still spin at the same speeds. 5400rpm & 7200rpm.

  • Method to move "iLife Sound Effects" to an external hard drive?

I would like to move my "iLife Sound Effects" to an external hard drive. Is there an easy method? I then want to permanently delete them on my boot up drive as well. Thanks.

My iTunes library is set up the way I said in the top post and works totally fine.
Yes, and that is the default structure to which I was referring.  iTunes will organize it that way automatically unless people do start changing settings (in which case they should know what they are doing and how iTunes works with library files and media structure.)
Both ways work, the advantages of mine would be that should iTunes try looking fo a library, it will always be in the default location.
It makes people think they have to change media location in preferences.  They do not unless they want to relocate media only and leave other things on their internal drive (in which case there is no point in copying library files to the external, and you certainly wouldn't want to then delete them from your internal).
Downside is that then should someone move their iTunes library to anther computer they need to remember to get those library files on the external hard drive.
Just copy the whole iTunes folder and it will get the library files to the other drive in one step, along with all the other files.
Your post has good stuff but it makes a move appear intimidating and look like people have to do a lot of organizing to move the collection.  It also throws in  extra steps (namely altering preference settings) that could cause confusion or even make a mess of things.  If people leave iTunes to default preference settings (which most people do) the move summarizes into a short line:  Copy a folder and hold an extra button the next time you start iTunes.
Note that the instructions in the link I provided earlier do also include many steps, but those are to ensure that everybody does have it all organized correctly before simply copying the iTunes folder.  In the end it is just a simple action.

  • I7 MBP and 7200 Hard Drive Vibration Problems

I went for the 7200 rpm drive on my new i7 MBP. The first drive was a Hitachi I believe and made a weird revving up sound--one I've heard before on cheap laptops. Apple replaced the drive yesterday with a Seagate ST9500420ASG . This drive doesn't have the revving up issue, but the thing gives off significant vibration. It feels alive under your wrists for sure. What should I do? I'm not sure I can live with this vibration. Should I put the problem back to Apple and see if they can find a drive that isn't going to vibrate or should I not bother with the 7200 drive at all and go to the 5400?

Well, have a look here: "Beware of the Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420ASG" (http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barracuda-XT-Barracuda-and/Beware-of-the-Momentus-7 200-4-ST9500420ASG/m-p/31340), which includes a link to "Apple Portables: Advanced tips for Sudden Motion Sensor" (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1934?viewlocale=en_US).
If you don't wan to feel alone in the issue, you can also find various rants about the Seagate ST9500420ASG on MBPs with a simple google search.

First see if you can determine if the Sudden Motion Sensor issue is what is actually causing the vibration and if so, does a fix work and is that fix acceptable to you.
If not, then with more knowledge of what likely causes the problem, you can put the issue back to Apple.

  • 7200 Hard Drive

Ignorant question...how do I tell that my new MBP has the hard drive 7200 installed instead of the 5400? I ordered the 7200.
    Much thanks in advance.

And if you don't see the rotational speed there (I don't, in Leopard), just Google the manufacturer's model number for the drive to locate the manufacturer's spec sheet for it. That will tell you the drive's rotational speed.

  • How to access komplete 7 sounds saved to an external hard drive?

i recently got logic pro 9 and i also received native instruments komplete 7... now because the library of sounds for komplete is so enormous i was forced to save the files on an external hard drive, however i did leave the actual vsts or programs on my macbook... now i would like to know how to access the library of sounds from komplete 7 from my external drive... i can't seem to figure it out.... thank you so much in advance!

    http://www.native-instruments.com/knowledge/
You might want to check your user manual or their FAQ/knowledge base. I know that with Final Cut for instance you can point the installer to an external disk during the install. Or, once the application is open, check the preferences to see if there are options to point the app to find the files in a library other than the default.

  • Clicking sound... afraid for hard drive!

As of only a couple days ago, my laptop (HP HDX 16) has suddenly started to make a quiet, yet noticable, high pitched clicking kind of sound.  I'm afraid this is the sign of a dying hard drive (and I've only had this laptop since August 2009... I highly doubt its lifespan is meant to be 1.5 years).  I'm in the process of backing everything up, but I have some key questions:
    1. Is the hard drive dying for sure?
    If no...
    2. How do I quiet this sound, and what is causing it?
    And if yes...
    3. How much time do I have?
    4. Is there any way to slow down the process?
    5. Should I keep using the laptop like normal, or use it as little as possible?
Thanks, and please provide anything else I should know or do.
I tried to record the sound with my mic. There's a lot of white noise because I amplified it, but you can still kinda sorta hear it: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13157221/noise.mp3

I listened to the recording that you made.  While there was a lot of white noise, I did hear a high pitched sound at the beginning of it.  Personally, it doesn't sound like a hard drive to me.  I can't say what it is with any certainty, however.  I suggest using HP Support Assistant to check the drive's condition.  Also, you can troubleshoot the other components, as well.

  • External Hard Drive Doesn't Appear and Makes a Beeping Sound

I have a Mobile XXS external hard drive from Freecom (approx 460 GB) that works fine on my father's G3 iBook, but when I plug it into my G4 Aluminum Powerbook (OS 10.5) it runs, but doesn't appear on the desktop. It also makes a continuous beeping sound. I want to back up all my music projects. As far as I know the USB ports work because I'm able to use my iPod. This isn't an Apple product but the Freecom website doesn't have a very active forum. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with something like this. I appreciate any help.

It sounds like a USB-only hard drive, and the Powerbook G4 is notorious for not providing enough power for many external USB drives.
    The usual suggestions are:
-Try a double (Y-style) USB cable to draw power from two ports for the drive
-Add a mains power adapter to the drive, if possible
-Try using the drive through a powered USB hub
Firewire drives don't seem to suffer from this problem.

  • IMac hard drive making clicking sound (audio sample)

A couple of nights ago I realized my five year old iMac was making a sound I have never heard it make before. It is a scratching noise that I assume is coming from my internal hard drive (hard drive is stock, has never been replaced). It isn't a super loud noise, but it sounds like the noise some hard drives make when they are "searching" or "thinking". I'm wondering if my hard drive is beginning to fail, or if the problem could be something as simple as dust or dirt caught in the drive. An audio sample is in the link below, please help me diagnose my problem. Thanks!

When you ran SMART Utility, were any of the sensors out of range or close to it, although not enough to trip the health measure? Just wondering. I once replaced an older hard drive that was showing error rates above normal, even when the drive was still 'verified'.
Other than that, you've run several tests that would say the hardware is OK.  As GeekStacy said, new hard drive noises are typically not good. So I'd be sure you have a good backup regimen, and if the noises get yet louder or more noticeable, you can either run these various tests again or replace the hard drive.

  • Odd La Cie External Hard Drive Sound

    Hi everyone.
I got a load of Apple stuff ranging from 1985-1996 yesterday and included was an external LaCie hard drive.
I plugged her in and noticed a really, really odd sound. I've never heard of HDD make a sound like this before, and couldn't find a similar sound on all of the "hard drive failure sounds" websites.
The hard drive itself is an IBM DORS-32160 from 1996. Below is a link to a youtube video with the hard drive producing the odd sound. I believe it repeats 3 times before I stop recording.
    youtube.com/watch?v=Plbo5SJl5Go
You will need to turn your speakers up.
I assume its means the HDD is toast, but does anyone have any idea what this means? Like, what the problem is or if you have heard it before?
    Thanks a bunch.

DiskWarrior will only repair HFS and HFS+ file systems. You need a utility that repairs the FAT file system. You might try hooking the drive up to a Windows box then try to repair it with a Windows disk utility.

  • Installing a better Hard Drive in my MacBook Pro

    Hey guys,
I'm looking to install a better hard drive into my MacBook Pro (15.4" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz) that I bought last September, and I'm strictly a software guy: I know little to nothing about hardware.
I'm hoping to upgrade from a 120 GB to a 320 and hopefully from 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm. Is there any other specifications I need to follow, other than it needs to be a notebook hard drive and it needs to be SATA?
I have these picked out from a previous post:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/320-GB-7200-RPM-Hitachi-SATA-Hard-Drive-New/IF 107-063
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145228
Is there any difference besides the price? Will both work in my computer?
Also, I have the AppleCare protection plan. Is there someone who can install a hard drive for me that won't void the protection plan?
I tried calling an apple store, and they want me to come in to the apple store and talk to a genius, which is too difficult for me at the moment.
    Thanks,
    - Keith

Yeah I'm more of a speed freak, I admit it. 7200 RPM sounds good even sacrificing the size, because I already have an external and intend to get a huge desktop in the next few years. Also, my laptop is much more powerful than any of my computers could ever be upgraded to be.
Also, I talked to my brother who says compared to my 5400 rpm hard drive, a 7200 rpm hard drive will run *significantly hotter* and get *significantly less battery life* (~30 minutes depending). Has anyone here upgraded a 5400 rpm notebook hard drive to a 7200 rpm hard drive before? Can you say anything about these claims?
I'm pretty sure I'm getting one of these two:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/0A57547/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD3200BEKT/
Any advice of comparison, brand loyalty, or how these specific hard drives will compare when it comes to heating up or battery life would be appreciated (for example, the Hitachi one claims to use less energy and user reviews claim to get better battery life).
    Thanks,
    - Keith

  • REPLACING NEW HARD DRIVE

My MBP which is Mid 2010 has 320GB. I hear some funny sounds from the hard drive when ever i start the mac.
Planning to replace with a new HDD. 1TB maybe..
    1. Need to know if 5400RPM & 7200RPM supported.
    2. How to re-install OSX Mavericks?
The original CD i have is OS X Snow Leopard. I Also have a copy of the OSX Mavericks Download and currently i am using OSX mavericks.

Ralph posted before me with similar information.  Here is my take.
Your 2010 MBP will support up to a 1.5 TB SATA drive.  Almost all internal drives meet that spec, including 5400 and 7200 RPM drives.
A silver lining is new hybrid drives are mulch faster than standard drives.  I suggest you purchase a Seagate 1 TB hybrid SSHD drive.  It costs only $100 (a few dollars more than a standard drive) and runs much faster.  It includes an 8 GB SSD cache that makes the data fly.
To install the disk you need not reinstall Mavericks.  You can clone the old drive to the new one.  Purchase an external enclosure for $10 (Google “USB 3.0 enclosure") .  Place the new drive in the external enclosure.   Clone the old drive onto the new one.  Swap the drives.
How to clone?  I use Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC).  There is also a good program called Super Duper! that may have a trial license.  You install the cloning SW on the old drive and then run it.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro Hard Drive Upgrade?

Hi. I am looking at upgrading my 2011 Macbook Pro hard drive. I want to get a 7200 RPM hard drive. I have been looking on Newegg and doing some research, and from what I can tell, the 2011 Macbook Pro uses a 3.0GB/s interface. If I were to buy a hard drive that has a different interface, like a 6.0GB/s interface, would it be compatible? Does anyone know the sizing for an MBP hard drive?
Also, it doesn't matter who the manufactorer is right?
And finally, does anyone have any recommendations?

But in my Honest opinion I don't think you'll really notice the difference between the 5400 and 7200 rpm unless your rendering large video files or transfering large amounts of data to an external or USB drive. But again you'll be limited on the speed of the external connections that your transferring too... If you really want to notice a difference, get the SSD with a Sata 3 or 6.0GBs connection speed. But the difference between a 5400 and 7200 rpm drive for normal tasks is almost negligable, you probably won't even notice the difference, but if you get the SSD you'll definately notice a difference in boot time, transfer speed, video rendering speed, copying speed of large files, etc...
