White balance adjustments to video create noise.

Is this true for you too?
If so, have you found a way to deal with it?

  • Mavericks: white balance changes when video plays

    Hi There,
I have an issue that whenever video is playing (YouTube, Vimeo, Final Cut, Premier Pro) my monitor's white balance will change to a cooler temperature after 2 or 3 seconds.
But weirdly, only the white balance on the video changes - nothing else on screen changes - setup is:
    15" MBP Retina
    NVIDIA Descret graphics
    Dell U2713H
I initially had to run a few terminal commands to force the MBP to recognice the Dell as a monitor (http://embdev.net/topic/284710#3567172) so don't know if this is part of the issue?
But this doesn't happen with the monitor at home - same MBP and monitor model.
I can't work out of this is the monitor, video card or the OS that's doing this - has anyone else seen this?
    CHeers
    Ben

I'd checked several settings on the Dell but just found another one: "Smart Movie Enhance" - turning this off fixed the issue.
    >Menu >Display Settings >Smart Video Enhance> Off
It seems professional monitors are becoming more like TVs - after turnning off all the picture enhancing tech on our new Sony TV, movies finally looked cinematic and not like 90s video!

  • Iso, Shutter Speed, Aperture, White balance for music videos or film?

Hello everyone. I just started making music videos. I just want some tips or can someone  direct me to a good  guide for music videos. I know the basics of iso, shutter speed, and aperture already. I read some guides and so far I know I gotta put  my shutter at 1/50 or if i'm recording something at high speed, i  increase it. is it so? Also, I always put my aperture at the lowest. I  have a Canon T2i and Canon lenses 50 f/1.8 and kit lens. I always put my  aperture at the lowest 3.5(kit lens) or 1.8. The tricky part is the ISO. I don't  know where to put my ISO. I know the lowest ISO is good but sometimes  the video looks dark. Do I fix this in video editing programs? Like should I always  stay at ISO 100? What about white balance? I use Final Cut 7.
Also, what about during the day and night? Indoors? etc I also have a cheap LED lights.

your questions are about the very basics of photography.
I would consider to buy a book, which explains photography 'from the ground' ("... for dummies.." not meant as an offence!)
    in short:
a scenery offers a defined amount of light.
Your cameras 'film' aka sensor, needs a defined amount of light to deliver a picture.
So, on recoprding, you have to control the amount of light, and the controls are:
    aperture - opened or closed
    shutter - shorter or longer
speed (ISO) - higher or lower.
Imagine the light as a stream of tiny balls, coming from your scenery: a bigger hole = aperture lets more balls into the cam. A shorter shutter speed reduces the amount of balls. And a higher ISO catches more balls than a lower. ..
Understanding that, you realize that those parameters are crosswise-related: an open aperture + a shorter shutter speed results in the same amount of light on the sensor as a closed aperture and a longer shutter speed.
If the amount of light is still too much, lower the sensitivity = ISO.
If the amount of light is too little, open the aperture, or use a longer shutter speed or raise the sensitivity.
When you set one or two parameters in this equation, you have to adjust the other ones: Video-makers start with the shutter speed, usually set to 1/2 of frame-rate = 1/50 - 1/60 - why? Because it allows a nice looking 'smear' aka motion-blur aka 'film look'.
Now, with a given speed, you can conrtol teh amount of light for the sensor only by aparture; and when you reach limits, by setting ISO.
When you understood this BY PRACTICING, you're next step is the concept of 'shallow focus'/depth of field. And when you understood this BY PRACTICING, you'll will understand the need of Neutral Densitity Filters for movie-makers...
But first things first: buy a book; read your cam's amnual; practice the settings and watch carefully the different results, diff. settings result.
... and it's really just about basics - independently of your device and/or your software.
None of the things mentioned above can be done or 'fixed' in post... (basically...)
    happy movie making!

  • Can you make white balance/exposure adjustments on top of current adjustments across multiple shots?

    Hi There,
We have a bunch of shots taken using natural light - the shots all have completely different exposure and white balance adjustments.
Now that the shots feel like they've been shot at the same time of day (and on the same day) we'd like to start adjusting the white balance accross multiple shots - but use the current white balance/exposure from each individual shot as the starting point - not reset the adjustments.
Kind of like baking the current settings or making adjustments on top of current adjustments - or make new adjustments relative to the current adjustments.
Hope that makes sense - is this possible in Lightroom?
    Cheers

Quick Develop is for artists, not scientists/engineers - sounds like you know how to use it.
Ya know, some people use Lr with the histogram closed so as not to get distracted by the technical aspects. I could adjust an image using the histogram only, without looking at the image!
FWIW, amount of temp/tint per increment is fixed for RGB files. I never figured out how it decides the increment for raws, but I'd very much like to know it, in order to normalize relative adjustments when a mix of raw & rgb files are selected.
PS - I think the original philosophy was:
    1. After importing, take a quick-dev pass in lib module and adjust all the basics in the ball-park, then:
    2. Fine tune in dev module one by one, if need be and schedule allows... (yes I know there is auto-sync in dev module, but it adjust things absolutely, and the context of this discussion is relative adjustment).
Via that workflow, there's not so much switching back and forth between lib & dev modules for access to the quick-dev panel during development.
FWIW, it doesn't suit me well-enough either, which is why I invented Gazoo .
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Can you remove the camera white balance setting in Aperture

I have a Canon 7D and use Aperture for processing and storing my images.
With the Canon I shoot both video and still and frequently adjust the white balance in the camera.  I make a frequent mistake in leaving the wrong white balance setting on - eg when taking video indoors in the evening  I set the white balance to indoors (the Canon seems poor at white balance decision making on video) and then I forget I'm not using auto white balance and switch to taking a photo with flash.  The result is a horrible blue photo - which if I don't spot the problem at the time seems very hard to correct afterwards.
I use the Aperture white balance adjustments frequently but unless there is a patch or white or grey I an use the dropper on, I find this particular situation seems to be right off the scale of what I can fix in Aperture.  I end up with sliders at the extremes of the scales and no intuitive sense of what numbers to type in manually to try and get realistic colour - so I often end up discarding these photos even if the shot itself is something I'd like to use.
So my question is given I'm importing RAW, is there a way to show the phoo without the (wrong) white balance setting I applied in the camera, to let me choose white balance from scratch?
Or if not, do you have any advice about how to adjust from this very bluey unrealistic colour of image?

Kirkby - thanks for the quick reply.
Didn't know you could drag inside a value field - that's helpful.
But being able to get different numbers on the slider isn't the root of my problem.
In a specific example I have two photos - one taken with white balance set to flash and the photo was with flash, where after a bit of tweaking to get the colour I want the temp slider is at 5000K (and tint 0).  The second photo has my shooting error with interior lighting white balance but taken with flash.  The two shots were taken from almost the same point of the same view (but different people in frame).  The shot with the white balance error comes off camera horribly blue coloured. I can fiddle with the two sliders - I take temperature to 20000K and tint to 40 to do the best with it I can, and with those settings one of the two faces is approaching flesh colour but the wall behind the subjects (which is a light blue in reality) is now appearing light yellow in places.  I just can't get a good looking colour effect no matter ow extreme the slider settings.
I may have phrased my question badly - as I totally agree you can't show a raw without a colour setting - so maybe I'm better asking to be able to use a different colour setting on the raw data rather than having to start with adjustments on top of my white balance mistake.
Given the two shots were in the same place against the same background and the same lighting (both with flash) it seems to me I ought to be able to get a similar colour effect on both and I just can't.  To illustrate here are the two photos (the one on the left was shot with flash wb and in Aperture I'm viewing it with 5000K and 0 tint, the one on the right was shot with indoor wb and in Aperture I'm viewing it with 20000K and 40 tint and it looks terrible!)

  • Can I modify 'Load Files into Stack.jsx' for custom white balance?

I've been wondering whether its possible to change Adobe's 'Load Layers in Stack' script so that it loads RAW files with the white balance adjustments I have made in Camera Raw ('ACR').
At present, the script loads the files as layers with the default ACR (or Lightroom) settings. This means that any white balance adjustments to the file in ACR are ignored and the RAW file is loaded with the WB 'As Shot'.
It IS possible to save new ACR default settings, but this doesn't really help because I don't want the WB to be a constant value. The changes I make in ACR are usually subtle and 'by eye'.
I would like the script to be mindful of these changes when opening the RAW file.. does anyone have any suggestions?

  • 1.01--white Balance still not working?

the white balance tool in 1.01 seems better, but still not right. Every other white balance tool, you click on a pixel/area, and the tool turns that area neutral, eg. the RG and b channels are the same, and adjusts the rest of the image. In aperture it appears to do something else. not even the pixel under the tool ends up neutral, whether you're using the digital color meter, or whether you open it in psd and check there.
am i doing something wrong? or is this thing still not right?

Nope - it is still not right.
In CS1 to CS2 the big improvement was the "smart sampling" of the colour picker. It seemed to make the best calculatiuons of the 3x3 pixel region.
The fix has improved the quality (particularly the tint, but not the temperature as much). It is still really difficult to create a stamp for several white balance adjustments that works as it is too much by eye. Whereas with 1.0 I used ACR and re-imported, I can now use Aperture for 50% of the sodium lighting adjustments.

  • Lightroom 4: Massive BUG with White Balance / Quick Develop. Totally Unreliable!

I just recently updated from LR3 and just now found a massive bug concerning the white balance adjustments in the quick develop module.
After a studio shooting and especially after weddings I use the "make warmer" adjustment in the quick develop panel to give all (a few thousand NEFs) a nicer look all at once.
The great thing about this is - like all quick developments - that it increases the color temperature relative to each image's starting white balance.
Yesterday I wanted to edit my first wedding in LR4 and like in LR3 applied one click "make warmer" to all images at once (previously WB was "as shot").
While I browsed through the images to rate them I noticed some of them were very "pinkish".
After closer inspection it came out that a lot of images (50%-60%) had the following custom WB set: 5316, Tint: +10.
It is always this exact combination no matter what the "as shot" WB was.
That setting of course applies way too much magenta to a lot of images.
After resetting the WB of single images to "as shot" and selecting "make warmer" once again the images look fine and get appropriate WB values.
But every time I select more than one image to apply "make warmer" a lot of them get the strange value of 5316 and +10.
Sometimes it's even just the first few images of the selection that get correct values and all the following ones get the off value. It appears to be totally random.
I tried completely resetting all images prior to "make warmer", setting them to different camera profiles first and even switched them to Process 2010 again. But absolutely no luck!  :-(
The "make warmer" tool gives me totally unusable results.
I find it strange, that I couldn't find anything about that on the net.
    PLEASE fix this ASAP.
To apply WB to thousands of images individually is a real pain.
I would be glad to support you fixing the issue.
    My setup:
    Nikon D700
    Nikon D300s
(Both cameras affected, I only shoot NEF)
    Win7 x64
LR4.1 as well as LR4.2 RC

    @ssprengel
I get your point but that is exactly my problem.
Not only is there no pattern but also once I reset a file that got 5316+10 to "as shot" and select "make warmer" for it again it does get the correct value! As long as I select it as a single file without others.
So just to simplify my findings and explain what I have been doing all night:
    - SELECT 5 files in Library View (all freshly imported, no settings altered, WB "as shot")
    File 1: 5700 / -8
    File 2: 5500 / -8
    File 3: 5550 / -8
    File 4: 5450 / -6
    File 5: 5500 / -7
    - CLICK "make warmer" once
    Result:
    File 1: 6089 / -8
    File 2: 5867 / -8
    File 3: 5316 / +10
    File 4: 5316 / +10
    File 5: 5316 / +10
    1 and 2 are okay!
    - SELECT 3-5
    - RESET THEM
    Result:
    File 3: 5550 / -8
    File 4: 5450 / -6
    File 5: 5500 / -7
    - CLICK "make warmer" again
    Result:
    File 3: 5316 / +10
    File 4: 5812 / -6
    File 5: 5867 / -7
File 4 and 5 are okay!
    - SELECT File 3 again
    - RESET IT
    - CLICK "make warmer"
    Result:
    File 3: 5923 / -8
now File 3 is okay, too.
    It is completely random!
But that is no way to work, of course.
I have two weddings from last week and am going nuts already.

  • Aperture 3 White Balance range

I recently took a handful of photos under some garishly unbalanced street lights. I took a greycard shot and used custom white balance in my Canon camera, which caused the photos to come out surprisingly well but not perfect.
When I loaded the photos up in Aperture, I thought that two or three pictures could use some additional tweaking. By making any white balance adjustment at all in the application, it reset the white balance to 2000K -- which is actually above the temperature of the lights.
I can't seem to manually set the white balance to any lower value, and the only way I can get rid of a color cast is to disable any White Balance adjustment (thus using the setting from the RAW file).
Is there any way to extend the range of Aperture's white balance adjustments? Is this the sort of thing that ought to work its way into a feature request?
(Just for conversation's sake, the location in question was the Campbell Community Center's parking lot during a San Jose Bike Party. Anyone from the Aperture team is welcome to take some snapshots there if they doubt the necessity of a wider white balance range...)

Have you tried tweaking it with the curves adjustment? Sometimes you correct colour casts a bit more precisely with a simple "auto split" curves adjustment, or by tweaking the curves themselves manually.
Have a look in the manual starting at p536 and also check out p549 specifically.

  • LR resets custom white balance on import

    Hey guys,
So I photograph my aquarium under blue lights as it brings out the intense colour of the corals more. I set a custom white balance with a card and everything on the camera screen looks fantastic. Once imported, LR resets the white balance and everything shows up as a big blue mass.
Hope someone can help and tell me what I'm doing wrong. Lightroom version 5.6
Example of the same picture on the camera and from lightroom

With underwater photos in Lightroom, the trick is to generate a custom camera profile. Lightroom has an upper limit to the white balance and will cut it off if the camera reports a higher number. There are instructions over here: http://wwwimages.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/photoshop/pdfs/cs6/DNGProfile_Edi torDocumentation.pdf (tutorial 4 is what you want but go right on the slider instead of left) on how to do this. You can also take a look at Lightroom: White balance adjustments for underwater photography at Seppo Enervi's instructions.

  • Custom white balance looks bad/off when set on the 5d Mark iii

I got my Mark iii in June and every time I set a custom white balance it doesn't look right. I have used both a purchased grey card and a white piece of paper, both look bad. When I set it on my Rebel Xs it looks perfect, no adjustments needed in post processing, but not the case with the Mark iii. Shouldn't it be the other way around, considering the price tag on the iii ?

Canon "tags" RAW images with meta-data regarding white balance (and other info) but does not actually alter the image. Depending on what you use to process the images on the computer, it can read those tags and decide to apply it's interpretation. But those white balance adjustments would be applied by your computer software (assuming they are being applied -- not all software does this) -- and not by the camera.
I use Aperture (Apple's pro photography software), which has a camera profile for each camera. The profiles can compensate if, for example, one camera is naturally "cooler" than another.

  • Partial white balance sliders missing

    Hello everyone,
I'm using LR 5.2 and have seen tutorials where local white balance adjustments are possible with the graduated filter or brush tool.
With my LR these sliders are missing. I can change saturation, contrast, etc., but not the white balance. Could this not be part of the student version? The screenshot to the left shows my screen, the one to the right shows the sliders I'm looking for.
    Thanks alot,
    MikeMike

The student version is identical except in licensing and price.
See the lightning bolt to the right of where it says OriginalFoto under the histogram?  That means you’re not using the latest process version—probably because you’re working on an old photo that was imported in a previous version of LR.
Go down to the bottom of your right-hand panel in Develop and look at the top of the Camera Calibration section and change the Process from 2010 to 2012.  You can also change the PV using Settings / Process / 2012 in the menus.
Be aware that there is not a 100% translation from PV2010 to PV2012 toning values so the look of the image will change a little, and may need reworking.

  • White Balance Effect

    CS6 Production Premium Suite
    Win7x64
    Nvidia GForce GTX 470
    Intel i7 930 @2.8GHz
    12 GB memory
    Canon XA10
Does Premiere have a White Balance effect like Camera Raw which adjusts the white balance Kelvin?
If not, why not since Camera Raw has one.
Is there a third party that does?
    Thanks in advance.

I use an Expo Disc to manually set the white balance for the Canon XA10. However, the lighting was suddenly changed while shooting. Unfortunately, the XA10 greys white balance changes while shooting. The speaker would have gone ballistic if I asked her to stop for a moment to change to auto white balance. So I was forced to shoot with a manual white balance setting that looked great before the lighting change but looked awful afterward. Hence, the need to make white balance adjustments in post production.

  • Video white balance levels not showing, so video effects and color editing won't work

I've watched white balance tutorials, and I tried clicking the dropper onto the viewer to change the color. But, in the gray box above it there are normally red green and blue lines, but I have nothing there. I think this is preventing any edits to my color balance, can anyone help?

Well, no offense, but you seriously should read the C4D help. That's normal specular shading behavior and it is uniform acroos the plane because you obviously haven't defined any scene lights and use the default viewport light. Read up on how to create materials and adjust there properties and then learn the fine art of scene lighting as well as how to use object buffers to isolate objects with multipass renders.

  • Aperture: White Balance in Adjustments inspector no longer appears by default

    Aperture 3.3.2
In the past week, the White Balance adjustment in the Adjustments inspector no longer appears by default in my program. It's always been there, above Exposure, Enhance, and Highlights and Shadows.
Now, White Balance is gone, and I have to click 'add adjustment... White Balance' for every single photo, which is hugely frustrating. I shoot in Canon RAW.
What happened to my default White Balance, and can someone help me put it back?
    Thanks!

Click the cogwheel beside the White Balance adjustment and add this adjustment to the default set.
