White Balance Copy / Paste Behavior: Absolute or Relative?

This is a question from a prior thread that I think got lost in the shuffle; thought I'd pull it into its own thread.
The question is basically when you copy the White Balance setting from one image and paste it into another, is the pasted setting an absolute value or a relative value?
For example... I import three RAW images, each shot with Auto White Balance.
Image #1 is a gray card and with a WB of 6500K.
Image #2 is a product shot with a WB of 6000K
Image #3 is a product shot with a WB of 6200K
Let's say I adjust the WB in Image #1 to 6400K - an adjustment of -100K from the "as shot" WB.
When I copy those WB settings from Image #1 to Images #2 and #3, will the target images get an absolute value of 6400K? Or an adjustment of -100K?
Would I have:
Image #1 = 6400K
Image #2 = 6400K
Image #3 = 6400K
... or ...
Image #1 = 6400K
Image #2 = 5900K
Image #3 = 6100K

If you do it with Copy and Paste it will be all of them at 6400K
If you do it with the arrows Quick Develop Panel, it will be relative.

[SOLVED] urxvt awkward copy paste behavior

and added the line to ~/.Xdefaults " and ran xrdb -merge ~/.Xdefaults
but for some reason i still can not copy out of urxvt and into another application (e.g. firefox, pidgin, etc)
I am able to copy from urxvt and paste back to urxvt ... I can also copy from firefox and paste to urxvt but not from urxvt to firefox ... i am puzzled.

i just use Ctrl + Shift + C to copy from urxvt and middle mouse click to paste.
and I don't even have that AUR script that you linked to, installed. works out well for me.

White balance selections, Quick Develop and Develop...let's talk

One thing that isn't well-known is that the adjustments in Quick Develop and the adjustments in Develop are *fundamentally different* from each other.
Develop is basically designed to provide *absolute* adjustments to RAW images. It can be used for JPEGs too, but in that case, the white balance setting is not absolute as it's already been corrected in-camera. So the WB settings are meaningless since you don't know where to begin and the temperatures are removed for the same reason. You just start where you are and get warmer or cooler.
Quick Develop is designed to provide *relative* adjustments to all images. What this means is, if you have many images selected and hit the right exposure arrow ">" you'll increase the effective exposure of all of those images from wherever they are now to that plus 1/3 stop. If you hit the ">>" you'll get 1 stop increments.
Since QD is always making *relative* adjustments, it may be reasonable to assume that you have a known, corrected starting point from which to make relative adjustments. That may be why the daylight and other options are available in QD. I personally think this is a bad assumption as you don't know what corrections have been applied in-camera. Thus, I think those options shouldn't appear in QD just like they don't in Develop.

The relative vs. absolute of the QD vs. Dev modules is something I'm not familiar with LR enough to dispute. However isn't the point of LR's non-destructive nature, that all actions on an image are relative to the initial baseline, whether it is a RAW or JPG (or Other).
Granted applying a preset WB set of values against a JPG does not make a lot of sense in the development of a repeatable workflow, but if a set of WB values improves a JPG image, who cares. Its all non-destructive and I can reset at any time.
I tend to not like operating in applications that are too stringent in keeping me walled into the "right" way of doing things. Particularly based on the super intelligent decision of the software developer because they know how it is supposed to work. (I have license to berate this group because it is my vocation) Changing the user interface from one module to another (if they both do the same thing) or from one file type to another is not a good thing. Consistency is paramount to user freindliness. If indeed the QD and the Dev modules work differently then it is expected that the controls be labeled differently to express this difference. If a selection is detrimental to the image or will cause application issues it is better to leave the selection visible (for consistency) and disable it (gray out) to keep it from being selected.
The abreviation of White Balance: to WB: in the application is also bad form. It is jargony and does not assist new users to understanding. Screen real estate is scarce and I understand the inclination to do this, but there is a cost.

Copy/paste error in Illustrator CC 2014?

Anyone experiencing any copy/paste behavior in AI CC 2014? When I copy objects from one Illustrator file and paste them into another, I get double the objects onto the canvas (from 2, 4, from 3, 6, etc.) ... and I do not have a trembling set of digits that causes my to paste multiple times in a millisecond. This only happens "here and there" BUT often enough to have me asking you all. Thank you.

You may try the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

Copy & Paste Functioning Incorrectly

All of sudden, the copy & paste functionality within Dreamweaver has gone crazy. Each time I try to highlight some lines of code to copy to my windows clipboard, the entire file gets selected. Or if I am finally able to get to a couple lines of code selected, once I hit Ctrl + C the entire document gets highlighted and copied to the clipboard.
How do I fix this issue and revert back to normal copy & paste behavior?
All other windows apps work fine. This is only happening in dreamweaver.

Well the only way I have figured to overcome this is to do a "find" on any string immediately after downloading the document. For what ever reason that action relieves my mouse-drag and my directional keys from doing weird things. DW is a really nice tool

White balance doesn't change when I paste my copy.

When I use preferences or copy paste, my white balance doesn't come with the paste or preference. Is there anybody who knows what could be the problem? (I've checked white balance in the box).

White Balance - life and stamp - copy and paste????

It is criminal that I cannot figue out how to take the white balance from one image in a project and apply it to another image in a project. I am hunting the lift and stamp directions and all to no avail.
How do I do this? It is easy in C1 Pro or any other converter.

Short answer: click lift tool, click photo to transfer from, uncheck adjustments you don't want stamped, click photo to transfer to.
Longer answer:
1. Click the lift tool
2. Hover over a shot you want to copy anything from, and the cursor changes to an upward arrow. Click on the shot.
3. The cursor now changes to a down arrow when over any picture, indicating that Stamp is active. Uncheck any adjustments or other info you do NOT want to stamp, and click on the photo. Checked adjustments will be stamped.
Make sure you choose Add or Replace in the popup to add or replace the adjustments you're stamping (this setting is usually only relevant to metadata for me).

How to copy White Balance settings betweenJPG files

Hi all,
Due to a stupid mistake I ran half a day in Joshua Tree National Park with my camera set to only save JPGs instead of RAWs... grrrr.
I have relevant WhiBal shots from this period, but I cannot figure out how to set the white balance on the related shots since the temp scale in the Basic section of the develop module only seems to works with a relative -100 to +100 setting instead of the Kelvin scale normally used in the RAWs.
Any ideas on how to "copy" and/or set the white balance in a JPG based on the adjusted value from another JPG?
Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Thanx for the suggestion!
I thought about this and experimented with it. However it seems that when working on JPGs this method just copies any "+nn" adjustment blindly to the target photos without any consideration to differences in the basic color ballance of the target photos.
I guess the problem may basically be that if the JPGs do not have any saved info inside the file on the assumed White Balance in Kelvin used by the in-camera JPG conversion there may be no way to make such a relative adjustment between two JPG files.
So does anybody know whether this info is available in a JPG file converted in cameray? In my case it's a Canon 20d.

Copy/paste - bug/odd behavior

I am getting an annoying behavior from the workshop IDE, when i do
copy/paste.
I often double-click a word and then press CTRL-C. I can do this as well
in workshop. But the behavior is VERY odd, when I do it with normal
working speed.
Say for example this code:

If I do double click and then CTRL-C on "str" in Line 3. Then my cursor
moves up to "str" in Line 1, and on the clipboard is the full Line 3.
Except from the movement of the cursor, a copy of the whole line I would
only expect from a triple-click and it should as a minimum mark the
whole line.
In this example it is not so bad, but if my line 3 was line 99, it gets
very annoying.
If I do it "slowly" it behaves correctly or as expected.
Is this expected behavior of IDE?? - Because this it definitely not my
expectation.

I doubt anyone can help without a screen shot of what you are seeing. Come back when you have one. In the meantime I would not worry, it is most likely some kind of encoding glitch. You don't have to "enable" a language to have it displayed on your screen, OS X automatically does that.

Copy and Paste Behaviors

I have to do the same animation to about 30 different objects (The 2D boxes need to rotate 90 degrees on the Y axis) in the project I am doing. Is there a way I can do one animation on one of the boxes and then apply it to the others via a simple copy/paste operation? I can then manually time them by moving the Keyframes in the timeline.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sure. Couple of ways. One would be to open the Keyframe Editor, make sure Show is set to Animated, and then select all the parameters and drag them to the Favorites folder in the Library. Keep the mouse held down and choose to save as one file. You can then simply drag this file onto any other layer in your project to apply the same animation. If you select all your target layers first, you can drag it onto all of them at the same time.

Robot/Copy-Paste Related questions

Hi guys and gals,
I want to achieve the following tasks:
(1) Copy some texts in a website starting from the cursor;
(2) Analyze the texts.
I am considering the following solution (which is complicated):
Let Robot simulate the copy-paste process, and save the copied texts into a file, then open the file to analyze the texts.
The problem here is the Robot class does not support mouse dragging (does it?) and so copy-paste is hard to simulate. Is there any solution?
Besides, the best way is to copy the texts directly into the Java program. How can I do that?

Cannot paste white balance settings to all selected raw files

Hi,
I select a raw file whose WB I need in order to place it to a whole set of raw files. I press Copy... and make sure WB is selected. then I move to the folder containing the raw files I need to copy the WB to, select them all and press Paste. NOTHING happens.
What am I doing wrong or is this a bug?

the only module that has Copy/Paste buttons is the Develop module. If I switch to Library/Grid view there is no Paste button.... then, how do I paste the settings I copied? Also, what is the Paste button functionality?? Why is it in the Develop module if it cannot be used there?
There is more than one way to skin a cat! Library module Photo>Develop Settings (see screen shot). There are even keyboard shortcuts. The Copy /Paste Settings commands can also be found in the Develop module under the Settings menu.
BTW: In Develop module I would tend to use the Sync button rather than Copy / Paste. Sync will operate on all selected images whereas as Paste will only operate on the most selected image.

White Balance Not Showing As Color Temp

running ACR 6.1 on Windows XP boxes. I'm used to adjusting white balance by utilizing color temperature settings, but I don't seem to have that option in ACR 6.1--All I have is a sliding scale from -100 to +100 and I don't see any way to change this. Am I stuck with using ACR this way?

What type of image format is it?
The behavior you're describing is for a non-RAW image. RAW images have absolute temperature. JPGs and TIFs only have relative temperature because the white-balance has already been baked in so to speak without enough information to reverse-engineer the absolute color temperature.

White Balance NOT Synchronizing in Bridge CS5

Instead of LR3 I use Bridge CS5 and the camera raw tool for my edits (it's all the same tools and runs faster.) ANyways, a strange problem i noticed recently after SEVERAL job edits.. I noticed the white balance was not the same on all my files. THIS IS A HUGE *** PROBLEM FOR ME! I tried everything but for some reason Bridge is not synchronizing the white balance, even if I just have white balance selected.. I need to have all my files the same.. I doesn NOT work in the camera raw module and it does NOT work when you right click, go to settings, copy settings and then paste settings..
Any one else experienced this?

Is the WB As Shot, perhaps? Synchronizing As Shot as your WB does exactly that, sets the WB to whatever the camera was set to, which if it is Auto WB in the camera, then the Temp/Tint values will be different for each photo. If you want all the WB settings to be the same Temp/Tint values you must change the WB to Custom or use one of the built-in WB selections that has a constant set of Temp/Tint numbers.
What I usually do is modify the As Shot WB to something slightly different by changing the Tint value and then set the Tint value back to what it was if necessary, which will make it say Custom instead of As Shot, and then synchronize with this Custom value.
