White balance - how to make a seamless transition?

I recently shot a wedding video and at the end of the night, the bride and groom ran from the reception hall out to the main lobby as the DJ played "Hit the Road, Jack."
My question is this - the reception hall is darkly lit, with tungsten balanced lights and other things coming off of strobes. The lobby is lit by tungsten lights. I can use the razor blade tool to chop the clip and set a new white balance for the lobby area, but there is a color shift that you can see, or at least I can, when the white balance changes between the two areas. Is there a way to make this transition seamless, or is it better just to leave it be as to the way the camera shot and balanced things?

    More details would help...what have you done to get to a white screen?  Were you in the process of reinstalling Mac OS X?  Or something else?
    In general, to reinstall Mac OS X, restart the Mac and hold the Command and R keys.  From the Utilities drop down select Install Mac OS X and the system will download the installer.  You w I'll then follow the instructions to install.
    By the way, you posted in the iMac PPC forum, this belongs in Yosemite from what you show on your info line, I will ask for relocation.

  • Where can I get or how to make a Halloween transition for family movie?

    Anyone have or know where I can get a Halloween Transition for my Family movies?

    Ah, well now's a good time to learn something new.
    You'll notice with a wipe transition, there's a seam where the images meet. If you have an image of a jack o lantern or something, use that object to hide the seam. Place it on a layer above your video layer. Load that image into the Viewer and keyframe the position of the object to animate it. You can keyframe almost any property in the Motion tab of the viewer.
    Any way, just a thought. If you have Photoshop now would be a good time to learn selections and how to make images with alpha (transparent) channels just for this reason.

  • Custom white balance - how to tell what it actually is

    HI - 5D newb here.
    I'm shooting in RAW and I want to confirm/determine what my actual custom white balance temperature is set to on my 5D MK III when I take a sample with my light disc and use it to customize white balance.
    The thing is, I have photos I'm needing to take in a procession, moving from light source to light source, and auto wb isn't cutting it. What I want to do instead, is match the temperature on the light sources in two of the locations to the original light source, so the shots can be shot "live" with custom white balance that works all the way through.
    But when I set it to custom, while it looks great in-camera, I'm not seeing anywhere in the camera that will tell me the actual WB temperature that was detected and compensated for.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you
    Bill

    Thanks Skirball - my problem is that I can never achieve the realistic color I seem to get very easily using custom white balance in-camera.
    And yes, you can manually set the temperature, or you can take a photo with a light disc and tell the camera to use that image as the basis for white balance. This is also technically a custom WB setting. THAT's the value that I can't seem to get downstream, and my guessing at the right temperature in post processing has been a frustrating, futile effort.
    Thanks
    Bill
    I'm assuming by light disc you mean a white card (or better, gray card)?
    I thought (guessing here) that when scrolling through the histograms in camera that it will tell you the temperature you shot at.  But I don't think it tells the tint (magenta).  However, any good post processing software will do it for you.  You can simply copy the settings of the photo you like and it'll apply it to any others.  Or just look at the values of the temperture and tint.
    Although, as I reread your first post, I'm not sure that's what you're looking for.  If you're trying to balance what is "white" under different light sources then you don't want the same temp and tint settings.

  • How to make a push transition without the obnoxious fade aspect

    I see that a view controller can do a push over transition where the new view pushes over the old view; the UIView animations have a push but their implementation adds an obnoxious fade aspect, how is the view controller doing theirs? Must be an undocumented transition code....

    Here's an example of the animation I described in my last post:
    - (void)pushViewFromRight:(UIViewController*)coming over:(UIViewController*)going {
    CGRect frameComing = coming.view.frame;
    CGRect frameGoing = going.view.frame;
    frameComing.origin.x = 320;
    coming.view.frame = frameComing;
    if ([coming.view superview] == nil)
    [self.view insertSubview:coming.view atIndex:0];
    [UIView beginAnimations:@"frame" context:nil];
    [UIView setAnimationDuration:0.5];
    [UIView setAnimationCurve:UIViewAnimationCurveEaseInOut];
    // [UIView setAnimationCurve:UIViewAnimationCurveLinear];
    [coming viewWillAppear:YES];
    [going viewWillAppear:YES];
    frameComing.origin.x = 0;
    coming.view.frame = frameComing;
    frameGoing.origin.x = -320;
    going.view.frame = frameGoing;
    [going viewDidDisappear:YES];
    [coming viewDidAppear:YES];
    [UIView commitAnimations];
    I hacked the above from the ViewSwitcher project in Chapter 6 of Mark & LaMarche, btw, in case it looks familiar. It uses insertSubview because there's a tool bar in the root view. I haven't tested when the superview isn't full-screen or in landscape, so don't know how much work is needed for those cases (obviously 320 shouldn't be hard coded).

  • How to white balance

    Is there a way to quickly white balance pictures in photoshop? I know with other products you can click on something that is white or gray in the photo and it will automatically white balance the photo.

    Make sure your eye dropper options are 3 x 3 or bigger. Then go to layer... new adjustment layer... curves. You'll see a shadow, mid tone and highlight eye dropper for setting those points.

  • Seamless transitioning or ADD transition effects for menus

    My last production I tried to make a seamless transition between a menu selection and the feature. Encore seems to always want to dip (or jump) to black after a selection is made. Can a future version (2.0?) add some flexibility to make transitions in and out of menus? Look at any of the Hollywood-style DVDs now; they all have an animation or clip that melds with the menu and again once a choice has been made. Just a suggestion.
    Ed Slonaker
    El Pilon Productions

    So you are saying what they do is possible in Encore? What I don't understand or have trouble agreeing with you both on here is the whole part that leads into and out of the menu. You are telling me that that is just part of the menu being a motion menu, but that the buttons just don't appear until a certain point in the motion menu, then they disappear when a button is selected to continue in the motion menu transition? Make sense? I know there is a VERY slight, but barely noticeable jitter or whatever you wanna call it between each of those points, but it is so slight that it is almost not recognizable.
    But what it sounds like you are trying to say that they do to make that work, is that they are not using that intro video as a timeline, but as a motion menu without buttons that is technically just a video and once it is done playing through its loop it forwards itself on to an identical menu that just loops endlessly through the main menu until you select an option, then from there it transitions through yet another menu into whatever the next asset is? Is this right? If so, is that all possible in Encore?
    Sorry if I sound ignorant and argumentative, I am not trying to be, this is just something I have been wanting to do but have not figured out how to with my previous attempts, and I thought it might just not be possible with consumer/prosumer level applications as opposed to pro-level DVD authoring that they do in Hollywood. Thank you guys for your help and input.
    Edit: DUH! Man I am so stupid, ugh. What I was trying to say above is exactly what they do! You guys are TOTALLY CORRECT! Thank you for helping me with this, now my DVD's of the future will be MUCH BETTER! I don't know why I didn't even think of this before, sheesh. Anyway, I just watched through the Nemo DVD and saw that this is exactly how they do it. Thanks again! I apologize for so ignorantly disagreeing with you oh great ones! HA!

  • White Balance Getting Changed on Import

    I don't know when this started happening or if i accidentally changed something to make it start happening but it's driving me crazy.
    When I import images from my Canon 5D the thumbnails look fine but as soon as i open one up the white balance changes and makes the image very warm. I notice that it has been changed to custom. If i select As Shot it snaps it back to the way it was shot and things look great.
    Any ideas what might be causing this?
    Thanks for the help.

  • How to create patterns(seamless)?

    I was wondering if there was any good recommended tutorials or good readings on how to make patterns(seamless) in illustrator for use on other designs? Anything that is easy to understand and learn from would be great. Thanks and I appreciate your help!

    Very interesting way to control all of this.

  • Losing Custom White Balance

    I wasn't sure where to post this, so I'm starting here.
    I've been having an issue with RAW (actually Nikon .NEF) files containing custom white balances and software on my Mac. I shoot Infrared images with the white balance set to make the green foliage go white, making the sky go kind of coppery. When I look at the thumbnails of these files in either the Finder, Photoshop (CS2, CS3), iPhoto (07 and 08), Nikon View, or Adobe Lightroom they look correct. As soon as I want to edit them, they lose the white balance I set in favor of looking black and red (what the camera actually "saw") and there's no way I've found to get the custom white balance back.
    I tried it on a friend's PC laptop using the free version of Nikon View and it worked like it should. I was able to save the images as TIFFs and open them on my Mac.
    Anyone else ever seen this occur or have any suggestions?

    What you're seeing in the thumbnails are actually jpeg previews of the files based on what the finder imagines the file ought to look like not the contents of the files themselves.
    When you open the file for the first time you see the RAW file without any adjustments. Depending on what software you use the settings may or may not be maintained on subsequent opens.
    You need to make your RAW adjustments and then export the file as a TIFF/JPEG or just keep it RAW.
    Check out the Aperture and iPhoto forums for more info.

  • Can anyone tell me how to make a video clip in color transition?

    Can anyone tell me how to make a video clip in color transition like the opening of "Oh Brother where art though" ?
    You know the scene at the start where it starts off Black and White then as we move down the timeline it transitions to a rusty brown gradually.
    It's on the Apple site for FC Studio as a promo clip.

    how to do a keyframe trasition in the Color FX room
    I realize that you can "add" keyframes to the timeline in COLORFX, but I don't believe they are always observed, and then they usually disappear in retrieved projects, and aren't persistent if you leave the room. To remember where they are... you might mark in a keyframe on those frames in another room as a pathfinder. The behaviour is consistent with a creature of the six-legged variety.
    Method 1. If you are trying to taper the effect (any effect) in COLOR FX, the most linear approach is to render two versions of the clip; one "with", one "without" and do an opacity fade once you have returned them to Final Cut. This gives you the most control, flexibility, repeatability and consistency.
    Method 2. You may attempt to keyframe the bleach bypass settings within the node itself -- the preset that comes with COLOR doesn't have any controls, but the Nattress plugin does.
    Method 3. Set up a "blend" node with your bleach bypass feeding one of the inputs and leave the second input to default to the untreated video... keyframe a transition from "1.00000" to "0.00000" and that should work.
    Note: the keyframe timeline markers will disappear from the timeline if you exit the clip, but the effect is likely to persist. At least that was what was happening a couple of minutes ago... for me, the effect and blend performed the transition just like it was previewing when rendered. This strategy is subject to being created and rendered "on the spot right now", and I advise making sure you have your renderqueue settings ready to go... load the clip from the COLORFX room using the Mac command bar at the top of the screen and render it right away. Don't try to save it for later. Just Do It.
    An announcement went around about two weeks ago that Mr. Deakins' website was back up and running, so give him another try... poor guy has been swamped probably doing Dreamweaver maintenance... yeah, that must be it...

  • How do I save a file after altering white balance?

    Adobe has previously supplied incorrect advice. Adobe has now told me to use this forum to seek the correct advice. I am trying to alter white balance on some shots. The originals are in RAW (actually Sony's ARW). So I alter the shots in Photoshop and save as a DNG file. This requires me to save to a new location- no problem. However, when I open the altered shot (saved as  DNG), it has always reverted to the old (uncorrected) white balance. I have tried various ways of saving but this keeps recurring. Please does anyone know how I need to save the altered shots to "hold" the altered white balance. NB I have no need to retain the unaltered versions of the shots. Thanks

    The originals are in RAW (actually Sony's ARW). So I alter the shots in Photoshop and save as a DNG file.
    As Jon points out there's no reason to use DNG if your camera is supported by your version of the Camera RAW plugin:
    Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    The point of Camera RAW is to let you save color adjustments in a non-destructive way—the adjustments are saved as instructions rather than permanently applied to the image pixels. It's the digital version of an analog negative.
    So you don't make the adjustments in Photoshop, you make them in Bridge or Lightroom and the adjustment instructions are saved either to an xml sidecar along with the file or in the Camera RAW database depending on your preferences (Bridge>Camera RAW Preferences). In Bridge you can make the adjustments, click either Done or Open, and the adjustments will be saved for that .CR2 image.
    Here I've set a custom white balance, adjusted the exposure and clicked Done to save the settings. When I open the image now or in the future the "negative" will be "developed" using the saved white balance and exposure.
    You can make additional adjustments in Photoshop, but those adjustments would not be saved with the .CR2 "negative". To use the image in other applications it has to be saved as a separate file (as a "positive")—.psd, .tiff, .jpg, etc. You can not place raw images in other apps like InDesign or Illustrator.

  • How to copy White Balance settings betweenJPG files

    Hi all,
    Due to a stupid mistake I ran half a day in Joshua Tree National Park with my camera set to only save JPGs instead of RAWs... grrrr.
    I have relevant WhiBal shots from this period, but I cannot figure out how to set the white balance on the related shots since the temp scale in the Basic section of the develop module only seems to works with a relative -100 to +100 setting instead of the Kelvin scale normally used in the RAWs.
    Any ideas on how to "copy" and/or set the white balance in a JPG based on the adjusted value from another JPG?
    Any ideas greatly appreciated!
    Claus.

    Hi John,
    Thanx for the suggestion!
    I thought about this and experimented with it. However it seems that when working on JPGs this method just copies any "+nn" adjustment blindly to the target photos without any consideration to differences in the basic color ballance of the target photos.
    I guess the problem may basically be that if the JPGs do not have any saved info inside the file on the assumed White Balance in Kelvin used by the in-camera JPG conversion there may be no way to make such a relative adjustment between two JPG files.
    So does anybody know whether this info is available in a JPG file converted in cameray? In my case it's a Canon 20d.
    Claus.

  • Can you make white balance/exposure adjustments on top of current adjustments across multiple shots?

    Hi There,
    We have a bunch of shots taken using natural light - the shots all have completely different exposure and white balance adjustments.
    Now that the shots feel like they've been shot at the same time of day (and on the same day) we'd like to start adjusting the white balance accross multiple shots - but use the current white balance/exposure from each individual shot as the starting point - not reset the adjustments.
    Kind of like baking the current settings or making adjustments on top of current adjustments - or make new adjustments relative to the current adjustments.
    Hope that makes sense - is this possible in Lightroom?
    Cheers

    Quick Develop is for artists, not scientists/engineers - sounds like you know how to use it.
    Ya know, some people use Lr with the histogram closed so as not to get distracted by the technical aspects. I could adjust an image using the histogram only, without looking at the image!
    FWIW, amount of temp/tint per increment is fixed for RGB files. I never figured out how it decides the increment for raws, but I'd very much like to know it, in order to normalize relative adjustments when a mix of raw & rgb files are selected.
    PS - I think the original philosophy was:
    1. After importing, take a quick-dev pass in lib module and adjust all the basics in the ball-park, then:
    2. Fine tune in dev module one by one, if need be and schedule allows... (yes I know there is auto-sync in dev module, but it adjust things absolutely, and the context of this discussion is relative adjustment).
    Via that workflow, there's not so much switching back and forth between lib & dev modules for access to the quick-dev panel during development.
    FWIW, it doesn't suit me well-enough either, which is why I invented Gazoo .
    Cheers,
    Rob
