White Balance Shift 3200 to 5600

Hallo,
We have material from one shooting done with three Panasonic DVX100AE, Unfortunatly, two cameras were set to 5600, on camera to 3200 white balance. Is there a way to converte the whole material from the "3200 camera" to 5600 ? Using the "try and error methode" with 3colour correction has not given satiesfying results yet. I´m wondering if there are any standard values known for that purpose that I could just write in the numberfields in 3cc ? Or is there a plug in available, that could do the job ?
Regards, Michael Lohrengel, Berlin, Germany

This link will show you a tutorial about Using Match Hue in FCP 5 , using the 3CC filter.
I think you can try this workflow to match both footages.

  • White balance shifting when importing raw files

When I import my raw files from my 5D mark 2 my white balance is set to 5200K, when in Lightroom it shifts to 4850K? Any body know why?

If there are no import presets being applied from the import pane, there's one other way this could be happening.  If you're taking advantage of the ability to adjust LR's default import presets (NOT the same as what user web-weaver is talking about which is configured through the import panel) and you accidentally captured a setting other than "as shot" while making the changes, then this is likely your culprite.
This feature is fantastic for automatically applying ISO-specific NR to each file on import, but it can also catch other settings you may not have intended while configuring it.  Go back to the files you originally used to set the defaults for each individual ISO, reset the WB to "as shot," and set defaults again.  The menu option for this only appears in the develop module.  Menu: Develop -> Set Default Settings...
You can also choose to wipe out all previously configured defaults by going to your preferences window, then Presets tab.  Look for the "Reset all default Develop settings" button.
Hope this helps you or anyone else who comes along.

  • White balance

What is the best way to correct white balance shifts post production.
If shooting underwater, there is either a big jump to very blue, or to red.
Will I have to select different underwatercolour ranges and correct them each, or is there an easier way?
Is it best to use 3 way colour corrector, or other effects, or a combo?
I also have Adobe after effects 6.5, is there something in there recommended, as superior?

Underwater footage is fascinating stuff but it will not necessarily respond to conventional color correction. Unless properly lit, filtered or balanced the colors simply do not exist; there's no color data to correct.
The #1 advice form the kenstone.net articles: Shooting underwater successfully requires knowing what you're doing long before diving.
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/lighting_below_thewaves.html
The loss of color is deceiving. The human brain compensates for much of the color loss and even at depths below 30 feet, your eyes will still see some red. But a fact which we must understand is that the camera is really dumb. It has no brain, so therefore it will not compensate. To overcome this problem, artificial light sources must be used.< </div>
When working in water with a greenish tinge, as in the west coast of our continent from Seattle north to Vancouver Island, a magenta filter will produce good results. For blue caribbean waters, I always prefer my red color correction filter. < </div>
POST PRODUCTION FILTERS. As in topside video work, occasionally we misjudge the lighting conditions and must attempt a repair within Final Cut Pro. There are a few filters in the browser which I have discovered work well with underwater video footage. The Proc Amp filter can be used to put some vibrancy into an otherwise washed out shot. The RGB Balance filter is another which if used sparingly can save an otherwise interesting piece of footage from the cutting room floor.
But these filters are definitely no substitute for getting it right in the first place. The best angle of attack is to concentrate on the basic principals of lighting so that your footage can go untouched from the camera to the timeline.<

  • Canon T5i custom white balance is green

We purchased several t5i bodies to be used for professional portraits. I have one body that when performing a custom white balance the camera goes very green. It takes several attempts to get neutral which is something I have never experienced with a Canon product. The T5i is being used with Alien Bees in a professional setting, using an 18% target.
I suspect it is a defect with the camera.
Suggestions? Anyone else have this issue?

Check to see if you have any white balance shift (not sure if there is an option for this on the Rebel),  2nd what is your 18% target? Grey card? is it filled the center of the frame?

  • HELP White Balance Tint Shift

My white balance brick produces a severe color shift. This just started yesterday after the ProApp 5.1 update. When I make an adjustment in the white balance brick the tint slider is all the way to the right (magenta) and shows a slight green tint. When I set the tint to 0 everything goes green. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no success. I'm just about at my last try with this program. I love everything about AP3 but I don't think I can take much more of all the issues. If anyone can offer some support I would greatly appreciate it.

This is a new version, I have never used Aperture before I've been a LR user. I'm certain I'm looking is the correct location, below are the only Plist items that are in the following location <USER>/Library/Application Support/Aperture/

  • White Balance seems to shift

Mark 111 changes white balance for no reason at all, on the same pic

I am not familiar with your particular camera, but if your camera has WB settings and/or shoots RAW:
I assume you are set to auto white balance? If you want a bit more consistency, pick a white balance that matches your location (shade, sun, cloudy, fluorescent, etc.).
Also shoot RAW instead of, or in addition to, JPEG. You have so much more ability to correct WB in RAW there's just no comparison.

  • Help requested with White Balance

This may come as a surprise to many, but here I am requesting your help, instead of giving it.
I have filled out a feature request with the following content, already some time ago:
Would it not be nice to be able to extract the WB settings in K  from the metadata and be able in post to change it to what you should have done during the shoot.
Say your WB is set to 5600 K, you can extract that from the metadata and with the White Balance effect you can enter a desired setting of say 6100 K. During the shoot you can do that with the Canon XF series, but if you have forgotten to use a warm card instead of the white balance card, this would be a great effect to have. Or in the situation where you simply want a shot to be slightly cooler or warmer, this would be a great feature.
Interface similar to the scale slider and fully keyframeable. The program monitor should reflect changes in color temperature immediately. Simple, easy to understand, like using a set of Warm Cards after the shoot.
Retrieval of the color temperatures should not be difficult. It is contained in the metadata:
It works both with AWB and manual for the XF series. If the camera does not record these data, the effect should be greyed out.
I request your help to get this feature implemented, since it is pretty simple to implement, is a great help to have when doing multicam work, to fine tune different cameras or to change the atmosphere of a shot. It is far easier than the color correction effects we already have.
If you agree with me, please fill out a similar feature request. The more requests made, the greater the chance of it being implemented.
    See Feature Request Form

Harm, I've seen instances of multi-cam shoot cameras that were identical models, using a clone of the settings which still resulted in differences in color.  I've seen this blamed on the chips and the chip manufacturing process.  I've also seen multicam footage from analog cameras that were supposedly balanced before shooting that resulted in shifts.  And then, you have a situation where the atmospherics can alter the color, such as when one camera is close to the action, and the distant camera is shooting through fog or haze that has light shooting through it.
So again, while you can get in the ballpark with certain regimes, when it comes time to finish, you have to trust your eyes.
So, for my situation, it's not something that rises to the level of something I'd use enough to warrant a feature request.
My biggest issue today is that I'd love to see Pr offering bottom-up rendering, the way Avid MC offers it with its Render All option vs. Smart Rendering, which is top down.  I don't like that I have to re-render entire sequences just because I made a little change to an upper layer clip.  That, to me, warrants a concerted campaign or pitchfork mob.
But, I'll make a pact with you.  If you'll request bottom up rendering, I'll request WB metadata support, OK?

  • White Balance color temperature for custom temperature shots

    Hello,
I would like to understand why LR and Photoshop too are always show wrong color temperature "As Shot"?
Let say I shoot with 6000K, set manually (Canon 40D, RAW)
Canon itself says it's 6000K in the slide info, fine.
Both Adobe apps says it's 5750K!
    What's going on there?
Second question - I know the light was EXACTLY 6000K, but the slide has some green in it. Picking white balance in LR gives me 5900K (which is close to the truth) and +31 Tint, which makes slide neutral.
Of course I can correct Tint manually before the shot by WB Shift in Camera, so the question is: what is the best way - to find more or less appropriate WB shift in the camera, or use WB correction in LR after all?
    Thanks
UPD. My suggestion is - Adobe doesn't read custom temperature from RAW file, it's just guessing! Is that right?

The white balance value you see in Lightroom is profile specific. It reads your custom white balance and translates it so that neutrals stay neutral, which is exactly what you want. If it wouldn't do this, your neutrals would shift in color.
The best way to get a correct white balance is to shoot a white balance (grey) card or use one of those filters on your camera to measure it. You can either set it in camera from the grey card or do it with the dropper in Lightroom and sync over the series. The effect will be the same.
P.S. unless you shoot a white balance card, you do not know that the color temp of your light is exactly 6000K. That is quite impossible to know. It might be approximately that under certain standardized conditions but you cannot be sure, no matter what you're told by the manufacturer.

  • In Module, the Basic panel (white balance, color saturation and tonal scale) disappeared.  How can I restore these tools?

In Develop Module, the Basic Panel (white balance, color saturation and tonal scale) disappeared.  How can I restore these tools?

When you say the Basic panel has disappeared, do you mean the whole right side panel or individual tools such as the White Balance tool is gone? If it is the whole right side panel that is missing, you may have hidden it. Using the Tab key, you can cycle between hiding and showing the side panels. You can also move your mouse over to the far right side of your screen to get the panel restored but it will disappear when you move your mouse off the panel. There is also a small triangle on the left edge of the right panel that you can right click on in order to determine the show/hide behavior (I personally use the manual mode).
Regarding the individual windows contained in the left/right panels, they can be opened and closed by clicking of the triangle that is displayed next to name of the tool in its header bar. While you can elect what modules will be shown on the LR Top panel, I am not aware of any mechanism to completely hide individual tools in the left/right panels. If all else failes, you can hit the Shift/Tab key combo a few times to restore all of your windows the the default behavior.

  • Batch White Balance using a reference pixel?

    Hi,
I have shot a time lapse image sequence that includes change from day to night & vice versa. The automatic white balance produces unsatisfying results.
Since it's always the same scene, what I would like to do is this: Select one pixel in one of the images and have Lightroom (3.3) use this pixel on each of the images as a reference for white balancing them.
    Is this possible?
A solution for Camera Raw or Photoshop (CS5) would also be okay.
    Thanks a lot!
    Mike

    Hi clvrmnky,
    hi BDLImagery,
    thanks for your replies.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
The dropper will use an average from that selection to choose a neurtal, shifting all colours to match that new neutral. I suspect this is not what you want.
I do have some snow in foreground which imho makes a nice reference for white balancing since I don't want the snow to be blue, pink or whatever I've got at the moment. Same goes for the clouds. So my idea is to use each pic's snow at the same pixel position for white balancing.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Only way I can think of is to create an Action in Photoshop, tie this action with the Lightroom export function and check the "add to this catalog" in the Export window to import the modified photo back in the catalog.
Thought of something like that, too, but the problem is that applying a white balance after import (which this would be) would already work on corrupted data by the previous in-app (camera raw or lightroom) white balance. I tried it on a pic that comes out of the default white balance as completely blue, and you cant rescue that after import to photoshop since by then the original info is lost.
I think I'll now go something like this:
Select all ~5000 images in camera raw, perform white balance on the first one & propagate to the others, then browse forwards to the first one that does not work with these settings, select from that one to the end & do white-balace on those & repeat until done. And to avoid sharp cut-overs do some more or less smooth transitions on the surrounding images.
    Kind regards
    Mike

  • Aperture 2  and White Balance Tint

    Hello
Has anyone else noticed the huge colour shift when making a White Balance Tint adjustment with AP2 on a new image?
When I make an incremental (1 point) Tint adjustment for the first time on a new image the colour changes dramatically (similar to making a 20 point tint adjustment in one go). Hitting the Reset button and then making further incremental WB adjustments eliminates the problem - and everything is back to normal.
This is happening on both my Nikon D3 and Canon 1DmkIII images, so, I don't think it's a camera specific problem.
    Anyone else?

I am having the same issue. Clicking in the value box for Temp or Tint causes a big shift. Using the Temp slider causes the image to go green quite a bit. The eye dropper is not much better. It routinely goes warm by a few thousand degrees or gets a green tint.
I called Apple and walked the tech through the issue and he was able to duplicate it and confirmed it is a bug. It is driving me crazy as I am spending way to much time fussing with white balance.

  • Can I keyframe white balance?

I have a piece of footage that shifts white balance during the shot and i need to be able to keyframe the change as it happens, but the color panel does not allow me to do this? i know i can do it with hue/saturation filter but it's just not accurate enough. does anyone have any suggestions?
    thanks...

I know, i was hoping the color correction would move more towards photoshop, not coral draw! no levels keyframe or even brightness contrast.. just hue/saturation and a bunch a useless funky dunky filters! I had a sweet spot a few hours ago where i thought i might be able to get things done on this and as soon as i got serious the app just cracked and fell about my feet on the floor. really don't want to go back to 7 but i think i'm going to have to. they've basically designed it for third party products to make money selling through the app store, and they're not out yet.

  • White balance issues after ProKit Update 5.1

After the new ProKit 5.1 update I get a new reprocess block. When I reprocess the image the white balance gets messed up. The Tint sliders go to 50. The white balance presets are all off too. Is anyone else having issue?

This is frustrating me too. Some things I've discovered:
Reprocessing photos tagged with the 1.0 to 1.1 which required reprocessing caused most of the issues. The auto-converted photos would go from 5200K temp, -1 tint or similar to having a wierd tint. However, using a tint around 90 (off the range the tint slider can be adjusted to. Similarly, using the dropper to select a whitepoint results in these out of range tints. However, the tint looked OK, it's just out of the range you can slide it to.
I tried the deletion of the Raw decode plist and that didn't fix things.
Also of note, I have a selection of images with each of my camera's whitepoint settings (a Canon 30d as it happens). If I reprocess each, select the whitepoint brick to enable it and press reset, I get back the whitepoint which was interpretted from the RAW (and hence the cameras whitepoint setting). These also leap from say ~5200K daylight -1 tint (if I recall correctly) to having offscale tints. This suggests there's a new range at play for RAW 3?
Incredibly frustrating. If anyone has any reasonable fixes, I'd love to hear about them, or preferably could we have an update from Apple which resolves the issue.
I understand that reprocessing can cause small shifts, but my photos which have not been heavily adjusted look totally wrong when reprocessed. For now I will not be reprocessing anything until there's a fix.
Also of note, it looks like way back I locked my default raw processor to 1.0 or 1.1. That may have caused issues. I have since reset the camera defaults to the reset RAW processing defaults for 3. I'll try importing some stuff from camera tonight and see what it does.

  • White Balance Presets: What am I MISSING?

Perhaps like me, you spend a lot of time tweaking pictures for your family.
One of the quickest ways to do this, besides cropping, is to properly set the white balance.
When working with RAW files there are 7 or 8 presets (such as tungsten, cloudy, etc), but when working with JPEG there are only three (as shot, auto, custom).
Now, when working in RAW, I am working with my professional images and I am unlikely to be using ANY presets. Will happily spend a lot of time searching for that perfect neutral grey.
However, when working with JPEGs, I am generally trying to put together a vacation slide slow, or tweaking my sister's new house pictures, or throwing together a talk - where the content is more important than the images. In short, am trying to work QUICKLY with acceptable, but not optimal, results. I would GLADLY use presets ... but they are not there.
Why are they present in, what to me, seems the situation in which they are least likely to be used, and absent when they would be of the most value?
I mean really, are you going to shoot in RAW and then click 'AUTO' anything??

I suppose this is right, that setting the WB in camera may result in some data being discarded? I understand that RAW, as indicated by its name, is simply a raw dataset of what the sensors recorded: it has no WP, exposure, or anything else.
Thinking about it in response to the comments, i realize that i'm not really sure what setting the WB does - beyond telling the camera what SHOULD be white, given X as the light-source.
I do intuit what it does, and which way to shift the color temperature to achieve my goal, but i really do not know what setting the WB does to the data as a whole, and if, as commenters have implied, some of it is lost by picking a WP.
Wikipedia explains that WB is "...ideally described as a spectral power distribution, that is, by giving the amount of power per unit wavelength at each wavelength of the visible spectrum." In a sense this helps me to understand.
So i guess that I can imagine setting the WB as shifting the spectral power distribution about a given point.
But, all the above being true, given that the LR-JPEG 'auto' can often come fairly close to fixing the color balance, I still find myself wondering why there would not be presets for other color temperature/frequency spectrums which would be able to come even closer, and which could be available on JPEG images where 'close enough is good enough'.
Of course, I also wonder why LR 'Develop' does not have an auto-rotate function, why I keep finding myself going back to 'Library' to rotate yet another image that was a bit too 'qui se veut artistique' to tell up from down on on the thumbnail ...
