White Balance Tool

I am using the following:
latest CS4 version
latest camera raw version
MAC 10.5.5
Can anyone help please - I open bridge, then open a raw file in camera raw. I then use the white balance tool. I go over the image with this tool to see the pixel values - but there are no pixel info showing on the R G B settings on the right (just below the graph). In Photoshop, this tool is working fine.
Is there a preference setting to activate this tool to work properly in camera raw?

Well, I have tested it again and the preference to start Bridge at log in, seems to be doing it. I ticked this off, closed down and started Bridge manually and the tool fully works OK with my work space. But could be something else, I don't know, but starting Bridge at log in on my computer seems to be this.
The saved work space I have set up as follows - on the left side of screen I have placed my favorites, folders, collections panels at top left, then underneath these, I have placed filter, metadata, keywords panels. I have no panels on the right and just have big thumbnails on the main area.
Anyway, thanks again, I can live with this now, I just start Bridge manually :-)

  • Undocumented Feature of the White Balance Tool!

I have not been able to find any documentation on this, at least not in the User Manual nor in the Image Adjustments Manual.
We all wanted to be able to click in multiple areas before leaving the white balance tool in case we clciked on the wrong spot.
    Well Apple went one better.
Instead of multiple clicking, just continue to hold the mouse button down and aperture will white balance on the fly!!! Dang. I particularly like using it with the locked down loupe.

  • My Vibrance and white balance tool have disappeared! Please help!

I ALWAYS use my vibrance and white balance tools on my side toolbar and now they're gone! I don't know how to get them back up and running. Thanks so much! By the way, this is in Lightroom 5. Thanks so much!

Rikk!!! I have spent hours trying to figure out how to get it back!! LOL. Thank you!!! What a silly, frusterating problem so easily solved. I really appreciate your reply!

  • LR4 White balance tool changes to magnifying glass

I just upgrade to LR 4.  However  in the develop module, whenever I choose my white balance tool and then hover over the image it changes to the magnifying glass.  If I click, all it does is zoom in and out.  The circle where the WB tool lives, is blank like it usually is when the tool is selected.
I've checked for stuck keys and still have same result.

hmm.. I posted on here. Left LR open and did some other stuff for a while.  Came back to color correct WB tool-less and vola all of a sudden it's working.  we'll see for how long

  • ACR white balance tool Q!

    ACR white balance tool Q!
Does it point sample one pixel, 3x3 average, 5x5 average... I have always wanted to know this!
    Good question huh?!

The color sampler tool is different in that it uses a fixed # of pixels. The actual # of pixels used is image-dependent, however. So it's not something constant like 3x3 or 5x5.
I'm assuming this is just something you're curious about, as opposed to something that will actually help you use the tools?
    Thanks again Eric.
Actually, I think it might HELP ME use the tools better. In PS, as we know, there is the option of choosing point sample, 3x3, 5x5... because the tools sometimes work very differently with the different settings. It seems reasonable to conclude that different results may occur, at times, in ACR if one could know and change the settings there. Of course (at least to my knowledge) the aforementioned tools cannot be changed in ACR, but I would like to better know how they are working for potential better results.

  • White Balance Tool Help

Can someone please tell me how to set Lightroom so the White Balance tool stays active until I deselect it.

Thanks Lee Jay, don't use it much myself. Even so, you can move the image around in Loupe with Pgup and Pgdn. It will sequence right throughtout he whole image from one point right back to the starting point while WB is active.

  • White Balance tool and Camera Calibration Profiles

Downloaded Lightroom v4 Beta 1 for mac but the installer package failed to launch. (com.apple.installer.pagecontroller error -1.) So I've only watched the adobe tv presentations todate.
Anyway just wanted to give some feedback as a pro photographer about use of Lightroom and improvments I would like to see in the next version.
I am a commercial photographer who needs colour accuracy in photographing fashion/garment images - most of my work is reproduced on a printing press for catalogues and brochures. On average a shoot will yeild about 500 images for a client, so workflow is important as they normally want them all!
As a previous user of Capture One Pro v6 and now lightroom v3.6 - the biggest issue I have with Lightroom is the dominace of red tint when setting the white balance from a gray card reference image, shot at the same time as the images to be processed. I'm not adding anything to the images other than doing a white balance, a tweak on exposure and camera neutral setting on profiles.
To obtain a white balance setting I use the combination of an  Xrite white balance card and the Q-Card and the old fasioned Kodak Gray cards all mounted on the same surface. I've used spot and ambient light readings on the gray cards to measure exposure and I've used the Adobe DNG Profiler and the Xrite colour checker profiler with the large colour checker card as a reference, (I've made profiles for sunny days, cloudy days, dual illuminant etc etc) and I'm viewing my images on a colour calibrated apple monitor.
Not withstanding all of the above the best results I get out of Lightroom are using the camera profile neutral setting! Everthing else is just too red!! even though the images do look more punchy; for accuracy of actual colour I choose the camera neutral profile.
Well when I say best results, those for colour critical garment photography and skin tones, these results are similar to those obtained from capture one pro v6.
So for the Lightroom v4 I would like to see.
    1. White balance RGB values in numbers rather than percentages.
    2. Add and delete a colour readouts points with a dropper tool on an image to enable more acurate colour balancing particularly in shadow areas - (already available on capture one pro and adobe photoshop)
    3. Curves adjustments in all RGB channels (think you've done this)
    4. Output to CMYK profiles.
    5. Individual levels channel adjustment for RGB
    6. Ability re-organize my tools palette (add and remove) is per Capture One and Photoshop
    Regards

The legacy ACR X.x profiles are no more produced nor included for newer cameras (AFAIK, since ACR 5.1/LR 2.1). The Adobe Standard is the new default starting point for these.
While I am at it....are the Canon camera profiles I downloaded for the 1Ds MKII the same as for the 5D MKII or do I have to download different one...I suspect they are the same or Lightroom wouldn't offer them to me...is that correct?
The profiles are different for each camera model, even if they share the same name in the Calibration panel. If you can see them when developing 5DII files, it means the camera-specific profiles are installed for your particular camera model (otherwise, you wouldn't see them).

  • The Lightroom Manual is Not Clear on Options for the White-Balance Tool

In the section "Working with image tone and color" the Lightroom manual states:
Specify a neutral area in the photo
    1. In the Basic panel of the Develop module, click the White Balance Selector tool to select it, or press the W key.
    2. Move the White Balance Selector into an area of the photo that should be a neutral light gray. Avoid spectral highlights or areas that are
    100% white.
    3. Set options in the toolbar as needed.
Sets the White Balance Selector tool to dismiss automatically after clicking only once in the photo.
Displays a close-up view and the RGB values of a sampling of pixels under the White Balance Selector.
Zooms the close-up view in the Loupe...."
Item 3 is unclear.  I selected the white balance selector, and moved it to an area as instructed,
but I cannot find any toolbar with the options described.
How do I get to this mysterious toolbar??  Everyone seems to think its a simple thing, but I cannot find it and I am not able to set any of the options described!
While I am sure this is a simple thing, I think that the manual should be much more clear about this description;  what is there now is very inadequate.

It should be directly underneath the image preview - press the T key if it's not there.

  • Lightroom 4 and white balance tool

In Lightroom 4 i use the whtie balance tool and find point that give as high as 99% reading and it would work to set it as the reference point. Today i did the same thing and got a message that said Lightroom could not obtain white balance from that spot and to try again. i've never seen this before. even if i used  a spot that was 100% reflective. It would just render colors off.
Today i did the same thing and a message came on the screen that Lightroom couldn't obtain white balance from that spot and i should try again. i was only able to obtain white balance if i used a spot that reflected no more than approx. 90%.
    what has changed?
    thank you

The White Balance Picker sample area  in LR4  can now be adjusted using the 'Scale' slider, so yes it has changed from LR3:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/white_balance_eyedropper_tool_option
The readings you see in the LR Histogram in no way reflect the actual raw data values. The White Balance picker needs a sample area that has no raw data clipping in any channel (i.e.All four R,G, B, G2 channels 99% or less). I suspect the 99% area you are sampling has raw data clipping in one or more channels. If interested you can download RawDigger to examine the image file to confirm:
    http://www.rawdigger.com/
I suggest choosing a sample area that is well below 99%, such as 85% to 95%.

  • Real Problems With White Balance Tool

I attempted to white balance an image I took using the White Balance eyedropper tool, and selecing an area on a Grey Balance Target. Well, Aperture is doing a horrible job of white balancing the image. With Aperture, I exported the image to Photoshop and white balanced it using levels.
You can see the side by side images here along with the corresponding RGB values. The image on the left, is the one that Aperture "thinks" is white balanced. Since there doesn't seem to be a way to check RGB values within Aperture I can't say what they really are, other than to use OS X's Digital Color Meter, which shows exactly what Photoshop is telling me...the image has a definite blue cast to it.
    http://www.johnburdick.us/WhiteBalance.jpg
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or if Aperture's white balance function is not working as advertised..
Any suggestions? Has anyone else had these issues?

    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Apple are being deliberately deceptive on this issue.
I have been to a couple of demo's at their store and watched the demonstrator use the same wedding photo each time to highlight the power of the white balance eye-dropper. I think this is the only photo on the face of the earth to give a half-way decent result from the eye-dropper (and even then it's still a little blue).
When I cornered the demonstrator on this specific issue he tried to use another image (one of the Tibet portraits) and the results were horrible and he was forced to concede that this tool was lousy.
I simply don't believe the software developers weren't aware of the shortcomings of this and yet they still decided to release and insult their customers with it.
But this is a minor issue compared with the overall quality of the images coming out of the RAW adjustments.
I can't understand why photographers are still fighting to make this application work. Sure, as a image selection/management tool it's very nice but beyond that it's garbage.
I've returned my copy to the Apple Store where I purchased it and received a full refund thankfully.

  • Add photo-to-photo hue/white balance tool

    Would work like this.
Alt-Click on area of color (white/gray, sky, skin) to sample/memorize it.
    Select another photo.
Click in a similar area on that photo to match hue (with white balance). Click and hold to adjust proportionately more/less (the double arrow).
For all I know this feature is already in LR and I've missed it.

I am also having the same issue with the white balance turning yellowish.

Can you see the Basic panel?  It'll be below the Histogram.

  • In Module, the Basic panel (white balance, color saturation and tonal scale) disappeared.  How can I restore these tools?

In Develop Module, the Basic Panel (white balance, color saturation and tonal scale) disappeared.  How can I restore these tools?

When you say the Basic panel has disappeared, do you mean the whole right side panel or individual tools such as the White Balance tool is gone? If it is the whole right side panel that is missing, you may have hidden it. Using the Tab key, you can cycle between hiding and showing the side panels. You can also move your mouse over to the far right side of your screen to get the panel restored but it will disappear when you move your mouse off the panel. There is also a small triangle on the left edge of the right panel that you can right click on in order to determine the show/hide behavior (I personally use the manual mode).
Regarding the individual windows contained in the left/right panels, they can be opened and closed by clicking of the triangle that is displayed next to name of the tool in its header bar. While you can elect what modules will be shown on the LR Top panel, I am not aware of any mechanism to completely hide individual tools in the left/right panels. If all else failes, you can hit the Shift/Tab key combo a few times to restore all of your windows the the default behavior.

  • White Balance Setting Problem

    APPLE COMPUTER:
THREE BASIC QUESTIONS THAT NEED TO BE ANSWERED.
    1. HOW DOES THE WHITE BALANCE TOOL WORK IN APERTURE?
    2. HOW DO YOUR SOFTWARE ENGINEERS AND "PHOTOGRAPHIC CONSULTANTS" USE IT TO SET WHITE BALANCE?
    3. WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND/OR DIFFERENCES IN ITS USE AS COMPARED TO SIMILAR TOOLS IN CAPTURE ONE PRO AND ADOBE PHOTOSHOP?

    Test Results:
    Aperture 1.1:
    Image Temperature: 3594
    Tint: -17
When using the white balance tool on a white section of a photo, the RGB values changed from R 255 G 234 B 192 to R 255 G 230 B 197 and the Temperature changed to 3946 and Tint to 12.
    The photo still remained unacceptable.
When usint the white balance tool on a grey section of the same photo, the RGB values cahnge from R 211 G 178 B 126 to R 208 G 180 B 162 and the Temperatue changed to 3154 and Tint to 2.
The photo still remained unacceptable but was notably improved.
Using Capture One Pro, the results were as follows:
    Temperatue: 3850
    Tint: -10
When using the white balance tool on a white section of the same photo, the RGB values changed from R 255 G 241 B 200 to R 244 G 244 B 244 and the Temperature changed to 2500 and Tint to -16.
Photo was very acceptable with no perceivable colour cast.
When using the white balance tool on a grey section of the same photo, the RGB values changed from R 190 G 153 B 108 to R 153 G 153 B 153 and Temperature to 2550 and Tint to -2.
Photo was very acceptable with no perceivable colour cast.
From this quick test on a photo, I can draw the following conclusions:
    1. Aperture interprets temperature and tint data differently from Capture One Pro, although this likely due to the use of a camera profile within Capture One Pro;
    2. Using the white balance tool in Aperture on a "white" section does not neutralize the RGB values;
    3. Using the white balance tool in Aperture on a "white" section does not correctly remove a colour cast within a photograph;
    4. Using the white balance tool in Aperture on a "grey" section does not neutralize the RGB values; and
    5. Using the white balance tool in Aperture on a "grey" section does not correctly remove a colour cast within a photograph, although it does work better.

  • Precision White Balance Techniques

Hello. This is my first post here; glad to be joining.
I have been using Nikon Capture for years and am moving to Aperture because I find the new Capture NX no longer meets my needs. I have been using a post processing technique taught by a Ron Reznick. Let me say it's not my intention to prosetlyze here, but I am looking for a way, in Aperture, to get precise White Balance.
I've already made a suggestion to permit enlarging the luminance histogram in order to use the shadow area (<64) curve reversal to get precise White Balance but cannot do it with the current Aperture histogram. I have the 30" monitor yet the curve is still only 1" high, too small to use.
Is there a technique one of you use to set the white balance? I asked this at DPReview and was lectured to that it's whatever you want, but that isn't how I understand white balance. I don't have a need to change it to something else; I simply want to set the precise WB which occurred when the image was shot.
    Any suggested methods using Aperture?
    Thanks in advance, Rich<br>

Rich - I'm using the WhiBal product with excellent success. I shoot the target at the scene (easily carried on a lanyard around my neck) and then process in Aperture with the White Balance tool. BTW, when positioning the tool, I use the loupe option set to show color values to insure that I'm getting the most neutral point....you can learn about the WhiBal gizmo from video tutorials on the web site: http://www.rawworkflow.com/products/whibal/index.html
I hope this is helpful in some way...your discussion of using curves to do this is something new to me, so you may be beyond this point.
    Good Luck.
