White Balancing pictures under heavy blue lighting

I am looking at LightRoom to process RAW images from my D3100.  I'll be shooting my reef aquarium which is under heavy blue lighting (about 450nm).  I can balance the pictures in Capture NX2, however in Lightroom the settings are maxed when using the dropper against an 18% grey card and the picture is not completely balanced.
any suggestions on how I can balance beyond the max of the sliders, or alternatives to balancing?
here is an old picture of the first day I got the lights and was learning the new camera -  pre (JPG version from shooting RAW+JPG) and post balance on the RAW picture done in NX2:
*** note that the tank doesn't look this blue, I'm learning that our eyes see things differently than the camera.
Thanks!

Just a couple of thoughts:
1. Marine Aquarium lighting (particularly reef-friendly lighting systems) doesn't always broadcast a full spectrum of light.  In the same way, gymnasium sodium vapor lights do not broadcast all the colors of the continuous spectrum. In less-than-full spectrum lighting it can be nearly impossible to white balance as you are missing key color components.
2. Water absorbs different colors of light at different rates. What is balanced at the top of an aquarium may be deficient at the bottom of an aquarium. It is possible to have a graduated differential in your white balance in a single shot if you cover a sufficient range of depth. As you go deeper in the tank, the ambient lights (fluorescents and/or tungsten) start to become significant to the overhead aquaria lights.
Neither of those solves your issue today but it should suggest that you might have to live with these limitations when photographing aquarium where you cannot provide your own light.

  • Inaccurate White Balance Of 808 In Low Light - Any...

I find the white balance and exposure of the Pureview 808 in indoor low light shots to be erratic, mostly inaccurate in most shooting modes. Although the predecessor N8 produces a noisier and darker image that is lacking in clarity (in low light), I find its white balance to be more accurate than the Pureview 808.
In low to dim lighting, the white balance on the Pureview 808 always appear to be cooler than actual conditions apart from the image being slightly over-exposed.
Below are my observations on the Pureview 808 (only in low light):-
    1) In "Scenes", Night mode will produce an image that is slightly brighter than actual conditions, slightly overexposed. White balance is off.
    2) In "Creative", Auto, Incandescent and Fluorescent modes, - as above.
    3) In "Creative", Sunny and Cloudy modes will produce an image that is truer to actual conditions. White balance is more accurate in these modes.
The N8 in Night mode (with white balance in Auto) produces a more accurate white balance than the Pureview 808, though the image suffers from noise and is slightly under-exposed.
Not exactly a criticism of the Pureview 808 as the overall image quality in low light at high ISO levels is still pretty remarkable with excellent clarity and low levels of noise. It's just the minor issue in the white balance which seems to be always off in low light.
In good light, bright sunny conditions outdoors, no issues.
For those who own the Pureview 808, may I ask how do you cope with this slight anomaly in the Pureview 808? Will there be software update in future to address this flaw?
    Any information would be appreciated.

It is unfortunate that sample images cannot be posted here. I have some sample images which not only demonstrate the inaccurate white balance of the Pureview 808 in low light but also the erratic exposure which seems to render an image in low lighting conditions to appear brighter than what it is in real life, an over-exposed image.
Below is the link to CNET's review which also highlights the inaccurate white balance of the 808.

  • Cluster load balancing problems under heavy load.

              Hi,
              I am running 2 WLS 5.1 sp6 application servers on Solaris 7.
2 Apache 1.3.12/Raven SSL webservers using the Raven proxy (also
              Solaris).
              My problem is this:
The application appears to be load balancing and replicating
session information fine under regular load. But when a heavy
load is put on the system, load balancing seems to stop.
One of the application servers processes all of the sessions
while the other is just replicating session info. The CPU
usage on the server doing all of the work was 60%, and on the
secondary server it was only 2.5%.
Do I have something set incorrect? I would think that if load
balancing works for a small load on the system, it should be
the same for a large load.
Has anyone seen this type of behavior before?
              Thanks

1.5G of heap is quite huge. Take a thread dump when you see the slow down.

  • Adobe Bridge - White balance metadata

When I browse raw files from my Canon EOS Rebel XT/350D in Adobe Bridge I always look at the Metadata tab to check for the f-stop value, speed, white balance settings, etc. of the currently-selected raw image file.
I noticed that the pictures shot in Automatic White Balance appear on the upper-left portion of the Metadata tab as an icon indicating AWB. However, whenever I take pictures with manually-set white balances, such as shade, day light, tungsten, etc., the metadata tab no longer indicates the white balance I chose, instead, it either shows an icon of a camera or two dashes, as in --.
Is there any way I can set Adobe Bridge to show the appropriate White Balance icon for pictures I take with manually-set white balances?

    Hi Curt,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, White Balance is checked in preferences/metadata. All of the Exposure metadata entries are also checked.
I forgot to mention that my version of Camera Raw is 4.5 (the latest).
You know, although White Balance is checked, I cannot find a White Balance text entry on any of the metadata lists (File properties, IPTC core, Camera Data (EXIF), etc.). The only place where I can see the White Balance setting in on the upper left corner of the Metadata tab, under the f-stop value.
Here is a personal question for you: When you browse your pictures in Adobe Bridge and you select one that was taken with a specific White Balance (not Auto), does your Adobe Bridge display an icon for that particular White Balance setting? I just want to eliminate the possibility that this happening only in my computer.
Thanks a lot for your time and attention.

  • White Balance Why ?

Hello All, I am by professional standards a beginner videographer of about 5 years experience. I have seen lots of advice around saying set your white balance for this or that lighting. I film a lot of theatre shows with lots of vivid colour, when I used auto white balance the colours were always wrong different shades ETC so I bought a grey card and set my white balance using this and the colours now look very similar to what I am filming. My question is why would you change your white balance according to lighting ? surely once it is set correctly you want it to accurately reflect what the camera is seeing.

I seldom have the opportunity to do a manual white balance at stage shows, because when I arrive to set up cameras, the house lights are on and the curtain closed and I have no access to the "actual show lighting" until the show is going. So I just use the "Incandescent" setting on all cameras and that has worked well for me. Lighting can and will change throughout the show also, so at least if all cameras are set the same, the color is consistent and I can make tweaks when editing.
Of course, when I have the opportunity I will always go for the manual white balance (or preset that looks good) for best results.
Different light sources (sunlight, overcast, incandescent, flourescent, etc.) all have different color "temperatures". Some are warmer (redder), some are cooler (more blue), and so forth. I vaguely remember some of this from sixtth-grade science class, with "kelvin" numbers and such. The human eye compensates for this automatically and always see white objects as white, and other colors then follow suit. Video cameras are not so good at this - AWB attempts it, but doesn't always get it right. That is why the presets and manual option, to TELL the camera, THIS IS WHITE. Once it is calibrated to what "white" is, then all the colors look correct under that particular light source.
To a degree, footage shot with the wrong WB can be corrected during editing, but often it can be so far out of whack that it never looks quite right. There is no substitute for getting it right when shooting! If someone looks like a blueberry or a sun-burned Martian on tape, good luck getting a nice skin tone in post....

  • How can I turn off Automatic White Balance/Correction?

    Hi,
I shoot color Infra-Red images. White Balance is handled in Camera - and then in Photoshop. As a new user to Lightroom 2 - everytime I view/click on an image in the Library - the color/balance of the image changes to a deep red, and I lose all of the vivid colors that I had from the original image. The files are Nikon NEF RAW - and I am looking for a way to turn this automatic change in colors off. Can anyone help?
Thanks and have a great weekend !!!
    Dave

    Hal,
I have a Nikon D-70 that has the Lifepixel infra-red conversion. Take a look at their website and you can see the great color infra-red pictures that you can take with this converted camera. So there is my problem - I can set the camera at a PRE White-Balance and shoot Cyan/Blue/Green photos - and then import them into Lightroom. I see the photos in the Library - but as I click on them to view them, they change color to Red. Now if I set up the camera to take White Balance as Auto - or pretty much anything else other than the PRE (for which I can adjust), I will also get a Red photo. Red is OK if you want to convert to B+W - but if you want to retain all of the colors, I need to keep the color that the camera shot - without Lightroom changing them. I looked at the history - and only have an import/date. Other than clicking on it to view - no changes have been applied by me - yet. I will try to shoot them as jpg's - the ones I am working with right now were shot in the summer. We have -20 Deg. C. here right now - so Infra Red camera is in bag - have no green leaves to shoot. Looking through preferences and settings to see if I can find a "turn-off"....... Actually - let me load the photos with Bridge and see what they look like there..........

  • Tethered and White Balance question

I am using the latest Aperture and also the latest Aperture Hot Folder to shoot tethered using my Canon5d to my powerbook g4 1.67ghz. The issue is shooting images with the same white balance applied as I shoot. Is there an obvious way to do this that I am missing? Or does anyone have an idea how to do this using Applescript? My main app to shoot is CaptureOne and white balance is quite easy to do using this app. I am trying to integrate Aperture into my shooting workflow not just my post workflow. Any ideas would be appreciated.

i don't know what your canon is like, but the D200 also has the ability to 'read' a white balance setting (probably from the same sort of calibration card that you're talking about... i've never tried one, but often want one). this calibrates the in-camera white balance setting based on the light you're shooting with. this again would hopefully get you close to correct without software post production (this is a theme for me: shoot correctly and then spend less time correcting).
and you've still got the ability to tweak if its not perfect and then lift/stamp those tweaks everywhere else. i like the fact that CapOne had thought of that for tethered shooting, but i also don't like to stretch and pull my image data any further away from the raw data than necessary.
keep us posted on how you finalize the workflow

  • Turn off auto white balance on USB camera

    Hi,
I'm using a USB camera to capture images of bright colored lights. I have the light configured and working in MAX and Labview 2009. My problem is that the camera is set to auto white balance in MAX and Labview, and I can't seem to change this to no white balance. When the bright lights are imaged the white wall behind the light turns the complimentary color to the light as the software attempts to 'white balance' the entire image. There doesn't seem to be an option in Labview or MAX to turn this white balance to anything other than 'auto.' I've attached the program and a couple screen shots to show the problem.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi!
This might be late, but for the sake of reference I will answer anyway.
You should use 2 property nodes.
    To the porpery: "CameraAttributes->ActiveAttribute"
you should wire the string: "CameraAttributes::WhiteBalance::Mode", and to the property "ValueDBL" you should wire 1 (for manual).
Then repeat this on a second property node but change "mode" to "value" and wire the desired value to "ValueDBL."
For a more complete description see my post on a similar problem with autofocus (change "Focus" to "WhiteBalance" and it is the same as described above).

  • How to white balance

Is there a way to quickly white balance pictures in photoshop? I know with other products you can click on something that is white or gray in the photo and it will automatically white balance the photo.

Make sure your eye dropper options are 3 x 3 or bigger. Then go to layer... new adjustment layer... curves. You'll see a shadow, mid tone and highlight eye dropper for setting those points.

  • Removing blue cast/tint from JPG (wrong white balance setting while taking picture)

    Hi,
Photosohop newb here, still using CS3 (10.0), so please be patient.
I was at a convention not long ago, where I took lots of pictures with my phone. I only noticed at home, that a few of the pictures came out with an intense blue cast because of a bad white balance setting (I must have accidentally changed it).
I was trying to fix the image for the last 2 hours, with no real luck. I tried everything under Image -> Adjustments -> "Auto Color", "Color Levels" and "Match Color", moving the sliders up and down to get the best match. The best I could come up with was still far away from the other pictures I took the same day.
Here is one of the bad pictures: http://imgur.com/vw12aTQ
And here is one I took just a minute later with the "normal" setting: http://imgur.com/RMFm7fo
I actually got a pretty good match by cutting out some of the cobblestones from both pictures and using "Match Color" -> "Source", but I couldn't apply this technique to the whole picture.
Could somebody please help me to make the colors of the first picture similar to the second one?
    Thank you,
    Roland

    Here's an easy fix...
Choose Image - Adjust - Curves, then click the Gray Point dropper and sample something in the image that should be a neutral gray - say one of the stones on the ground.  Click in various places until you like what you see.

  • Unsatisfactory E71 auto white balance, blue/purple...

The E71's camera doesn't really shine with regard to automatic white balance. There's almost always some blue to purple tint. It seems to depend whether the "flash" was used and whether the camera is used in day or "night" mode. The other (non-auto) white balance modes usually don't match the actual lighting conditions too. Is it a deficient white-balance algorithm or is this tint just from the heavy noise in non-night mode? Is there any workaround (on the phone, not postprocessing on a PC) or fix, maybe it is improved in 200.x firmware? - Kolja

    Here:
    fw: 200.x

After that set it back to automatic

  • White balance adds blue - looks worse!

Hello. I am having a little problem with the white balance color picker. I shoot with a Canon 5D and I always start by shooting a WhiBal card. Prior to using the white balance tool I have values of R:196 G:196 B:187 on the WhiBal card itself. Since the Auto WB setting is on in the camera it looks pretty good but a little too yellow. You'd think that the white balance tool would normalize things. Instead it goes to R:196 G:196 B:207! Everything immediately looks too blue. Aperture 1.0 did a great job 1.1 not so good. I read elsewhere about a bug, am I getting bit by it?

Yes Joshua, there is a Santa Claus and you are getting bit by the color temperature bug. Evidently, according to Apple, code that had been totally fixed in the 1.1 release was broken again just before deployment. Unfortunately, no one noticed until it was in users' hands.
According to Joe Schorr, Aperture Product Manager, "they are all over it". Expect it to be rectified in 1.1.1, which is promised as soon as possible.
