I am actually moving into a house that will have a very similar setup.  I plan on using a hotspot but I need it to connect to my Time Capsule and wired Airport Express at the other end of the house.  I think what you are looking for is called "Wifi as WAN" capability.  This means it can take your wifi signal and rebroadcast it.  In my case and yours, we need it to convert the wifi to ethernet so it can go into our Apple Networking hardware.
Check out:
PepWave Surf On The Go - This lets you convert the wifi signal to ethernet, or boost the wifi signal.
http://www.peplink.com/products/pepwave-surf-on-the-go/
http://3gstore.com/product/3498_surf-on-the-go-3g-4g-router.html
Cradlepoint makes some routers that are capable of Wifi as WAN
http://cradlepoint.com/products/small-business-home-office-routers/mbr95-wireles s-4g-3g-router
(Amazon) http://ASIN.cc/EEVxM0
I will probably go with the PepWave, since you can disable the rebroadcast of the Wifi signal.  I will use a hotspot and join the PepWave with it, then run ethernet into my Time Capsule and create a different Wifi/Wired Network with a different SSID. We will see.
Let me know if you try any of this stuff.  Cheers!

  • How can I use Apple TV with iPhone 4S and no home Internet connection?

    Ok here is the situation.  I'm at my grandparents house where I have the following setup;
    NO home Internet connection
    iPhone 4S
Verizon carrier with unlimited data plan
Apple TV (I believe it's the latest one)
    Lynksys router
What I would like to do is stream Netflix, HBO GO, or You Tube and put it on my grandparent's tv where I have the Apple TV hooked up.
I thought it wouldn't be a problem however I can't figure out how to be on the same network from the router and receive 3G data at the same time.
Is it possible to do what I want with this setup?  If so how?
    Thanks

I think I worked out a solution given my equipment.  I was looking around on other forums and I found the following post concerning the ability for iPhone 4S to be on 3G and wifi simultaneously.
"I know this thread is old and op may have discovered the answer already. However, I am posting this just in case someone else might be looking for a solution.
The solution does not require any additional software nor require a jailbreak.
All you need to accomplish this is already built into every iPhone and iPad with 3G.
Connect to your wifi and write down the IP address your router assigned you. Then, select static tab instead of DHCP and fill in the IP address your DHCP server assigned to your iPad. Next, fill in the subnet mask but leave the rest of the fields empty.
You now have access to your wifi as well as 3G.
I ran into this issue when I wanted to use live traffic using 3G for my iPad's GPS and still connect to my GoFlex Satellite using wifi. It works extremely well."
AFter configuring my phone to the router, as mentioned above, I connected my Apple TV to the same router.  Using the mirroring option I was able to airplay Netflix, You Tube and Flixster flawlessly from my phone to the big screen.  Direct TV and HBO GO did not work however.
I Then tried to access items directly from Apple TV thinking that it could use the data from my phone.  I was wrong.  So all in all I'm able to stream about half of my movie entertainment applications given my situation.  I'm pleased.

  • Using the mac mini with a dial up internet connection

How do I go about using my mac mini with a dial up internet connection? I am soon to be moving to a rural area and dial up will be my only internet option. Please be very specific in your answer as I am not a very tech savvy fellow. Thank you for your help.

The last time I needed to use dial up I used this amazing device from actiontec:
    http://shopping.netsuite.com/s.nl/c.ACCT122499/it.A/id.72/.f
Very hard to find one now, but it has the advantage that it connects to the ethernet ports of up to two computers, rather than using a less reliable usb connection.

  • Users cannot sign in connected with wifi at home

    Hey
I need some urgent help with that issue:
My clients report that they can't sign in to Lync app when they conneted to
    WiFi at home
when they are trying to connect Lync through 3G or 4G with "auto detect server" - it does works great!
I don't really know why it happens but I guess it is someting with DNS maybe?
please note that it happen only with iOS devices
    Thanks!

Clients sign in using DNS so the first thing to check is if the clients are correctly able to resolve lyncdiscover.contosso.com. Also check 3G\4G to compare DNS resolving to correct\expected IP's
You haven't mentioned if its the same device they are using or what version of Lync we are talking about here. Also, do you have a mobile APN for your organization? If so the 3G\4G could be considered as on the WAN.

  • I want to connect an Airport Express via WiFi to my internet connection and then connect its LAN port to the WAN port of a Time Capsule. Will then any device connected to the time capsule wirelessly be also connected to the internet?

Background is I can't hook up my time capsule directly to my internet connection via network cable. I tried to extend the network via Wifi, but that did not work. At the moment I have two wireless networks, one with internet connection and another one with my time capsule. So to use time machine I have to change my network all the time.
Can I buy an Airport Express, use is as a client to my internet connection wifi and provide that connection via network cable to my time capsule and all it's wifi clients?

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

  • Macbook Pro connected to wifi, but no internet connection

    Hi,
Just bought new Macbook Pro yesterday with Mountain Lion OS. When back home, trying to connect internet, unfortunately safari would always says "No internet connection". I try very hard on getting it up creating new connection on MBP but it still give the same result. So I think it should be related my router setting. The current wifi setting for my TP-Link router is WPA2-PSK, AES, channel 11 with secured password. When I changed it to NO security, supprisingly the connection is now OK and I can browse internet through Safari. The problem is I have to get it back to WPA2 security setting since my home internet is now open to my neighbourhood and of course it shouldn't be shared all around you. Anybody can tell how the router setting should work with MBP, with details on security type, AES or TKIP,CHANNEL?

That doesn't mean anything.  You can't telnet to google. lol
The ping you did above shows you that Internet access and DNS is working fine.  If it wasn't, you wouldn't be able to get replies.  This means that the problem is with your browser.  Open up Safari and hit Safari/Reset Safari under it's menu.  See if that works to solve your issue.  If it doesn't, then it's a plugin or something else (maybe Proxy changes, etc.) which could be causing this.  One option you have to test is if the reset doesn't fix it, install another browser (you'll need to download the dmg via another PC and install it on the mac from a memory stick or something) and see if a 3rd party browser works.

  • IMac was connected to my wifi, now "no internet connection" works on others

    Hi Everyone,
So, I'm using a current generation (I think!) 21.5" i3 iMac. All has been fine, except since yesterday, but, it's a weird problem..
So, I was connected to my home wifi, (a netgear router provided by my ISP), all was well (for the last 6 months or whatever), and then suddenly out of nowhere I have an exclamation mark over my airport sign and "no internet connection" when I click it. (now known as "!")
First thing I tried was restarting router, then restarting iMac. Neither worked, came back and still "!".
Then I realised, my iPhone is on the WiFi and it has been working fine, sure enough it is fine. I got out my old MBP and went on it, and hey, the internet works absolutely fine. So, I started worrying that perhaps the airport in the iMac has suffered some kind of failure...
But, alas no, as I realised some of our neighbours have unprotected networks, so went on a nice "NETGEAR" network, and hey! The internet works on the iMac again. Went back to my network and it comes back with.... "!"
So, I then logically (perhaps) thought that the router has decided to dislike the iMac and isn't letting it connect... So, I reset the router to factory settings (which was a bad idea now that I look back as I didn't have login settings so had to phone call centre of ISP to get details... D'oh..) but now that the internet is back up, I also changed the name of the network, the passwords etc, thinking I could fool the iMac into thinking it's something else, but.. NO! Connected to the new network and.... "!"
So, it's miffing me off quite a lot. I am currently using my Uni's network (which just reaches my flat) but it's not that fast, and not intended for use at home, I'm sure! I'd like to get back on my network.
Any help greatly appreciated but, I realise this is an odd problem.. just hoping I'm not the first?
    Charlie -

Take a look at your router settings. If you use WEP encryption, change it to WPA2. Macs really don't like WEP.
Also, here is a good article on all the settings. It references IOS but ignore that:

  • WiFi Alert: No Internet connection

My mini (early 2009, OSX 10.9.5) stopped connecting to the Internet today (was ok for hours but suddenly not) but could still connect to either of my WiFi base stations and I could transfer files over the WiFi LAN to other Macs, thru either WiFi base. WiFi menu bar drop down said: "Alert: No Internet connection…". I restarted and ran Wireless Diagnostic app but no success.
The only way I got my mini connected was to configure IPs manually in the Advanced button's TCP/IP tab, replicating the IPs from my MacBook "Using DHCP" (late 2006, OSX 10.7.5) that sits beside my mini connected to the Internet using the same WiFi base stations, so the problem is with my mini.
How do I fix the mini so it connects "Using DHCP"? I'm puzzled that this problem suddenly came about while doing my typical online email and browsing. That implies a hardware problem, right?
One other possibly related anomaly is that my mini can't "remember" my Airport base network even tho it is entered as the top Preferred Network in Wi-Fi System Preferences with WPA2 Personal Security enabled (my other base has WPA Personal enabled and the mini remembers it). Yes, "Remember networks…joined" is selected.
FYI, one WiFi base is Apple Airport Extreme circa 2008 running 7.6.4 connected via Ethernet to the other, a Thomson Gateway supplied by my service provider. For over a year this mini has connected to the Internet thru these base stations "Using DHCP", however, occasionally I have had this Internet connection problem but it usually goes away after a few minutes….now it seems permanent.

The wavelength at these frequencies (2.450Ghz) is 122mm, so a full gain (full wave) antenna would be that long (+ a bit for connection) 3 to 5 are needed for full spread spectrum use and even more are needed for 5Ghz operation (different length) So antennae that are too short are used, usually quarter wave + some amplification for extra noise
It is as you can tell quite a compromise, full wave antennae have the most gain but are the biggest, small ones fit neatly in the little gadgets but the laws of physics have no style.
And at any given moment almost all of the Rx power is wasted covering the area where a receiver 'might' be

  • Can connect to wifi, but no internet connection

So, this is my first MacBook.  I just bought it yesterday, so I believe I have the latest OS (OS X? Maybe?  I'm computer literate with PCs, but really a n00b here, and cannot even find where it would say what OS I'm using).  I have tried connecting to wifi networks using Airport at a few wifi hot spots and have about a 50/50 record.  They always connect just fine to the network, but half the time I get a "No internet connection" error.
When I try my iPhone 4 or my laoptop (running Windows 7), I have no problems.  This led me to believe that the problem is with my new MacBook.  But when I went to the apple store, the "genius"/sycophantic fanboy told me that the problem was really with the various coffeeshop wifi routers, not my MacBook.  Essentially, he said that my OS is too advanced for the routers to handle and so they need to upgrade.  This strikes me as patently ridiculous, and if he is right, it sounds more like Apple decided not to make their latest OS backwards compatible with (not even that much) older technology.  And, ergo, its really Apple's problem that I am now burdened with.
So, is this an actual, common problem?  Did Apple really decide to make its latest OS incompatible with routers that are merely 2 or 3 years old?  Or is there some kind of fix I can do from my end (I don't intend on asking all the coffeeshops in my town to upgrade).
    Thanks.

I am precluded, as a general rule, from knowing anything about the router in this (very common) situation.  This happens at about half of the wifi hot spots I go to, and the idea of having to ask a barista about their router's firmware is clearly ludicrious.
That said, I don't believe (95% sure) that I get a valid IP address when this problem happens.  (I have one now, obviously).  And I have no clue about the router's firmware.
    Thanks

  • Airplay with wifi and no internet ?

I need to use only airplay, can I do it over a wifi network with no internet connection?

Yes. Airplay doesn't require an Internet connection, just the local wifi network. It's the content that would require Internet, so if all your media is stored on your device then you're good to go

  • Help!, pozor!, White MacBook can't  access home internet

We have 4 MacBooks but only the the oldest one cannot access the internet. We have a cable modem connected to a Time Capsule. The other 3 MacBooks (each is aluminum) connect wirelessly and have no internet problems. Trying ethernet with the white MacBook does not solve the problem. When trying AirPort, signal strength is maximum (4 bars) on the white MacBook. The Network assistant tells me I am connected to our wireless router and the IP address is 10.0.1.7. However Safari will never load a page but after trying for a while shunts me to Network Diagnostics and my attempts flounder with repeated restarts of the modem and router. I'm not sure, but Skype does seem to connect!
The white MacBook is running 10.6.1. It has a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Model identifier is MacBook 1,1. S/N 4H6229D8U9C
    TIA,
    Allan

Please ignore the advice to downgrade your computer to an earlier operating system. That's a ridiculous suggestion.
If I understand correctly, you cannot access the internet on the problem machine via Airport or Ethernet. Is that correct?
You may want to try resetting Safari and trashing the internet preferences. Here's a step-by-step guide to that process:
    http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=4162
I would troubleshoot the problem while directly connected to the cable modem via Ethernet. Once you get it working in that mode, try to get it working on the wireless.
Note that you have not updated the machine to the latest iteration of Snow Leopard (10.6.2). You might want to run Software Update on the problem machine before troubleshooting.
Edit: Doh! You can't run software update when you have no internet connection! That was stupid advice on my part. You can download 10.6.2 onto one of your other machine and transfer it to the problem machine with a flash drive or over the local network.

  • WiFi to Ethernet Internet Connection Conundrum - Can you help?

I'm trying to figure out whether it's possible to use my G5's ethernet port as a hub to connect my 12" G4 to my Wifi network. The G5 is connected via Wifi as it's two floors away from the modem.
My G4's airport seems to have gone screwy, and in the meantime, until I fix it, I need to get internet connected without directly plugging in to the far away modem.
The Wifi network is not an "airport" network (the wireless modem is a Thomson Speed Touch 585 model). If it was, I'd use my Airport Express' ethernet port. I can't get internet via WDS for some reason.
    Any solutions?

With the Laptop set to DHCP and Ethernet dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations, try Finder>Go menu> Connect to Server, then either browse or type in the IP of the G5.
Oh, almost forgot, if the G5's Airport has an IP with 2 in the third spot, like x.x.2.x, then it won't work.
We could try it Manually, though Apple says you can't, it sometimes works, then sometimes doesn't but works right after you try Manually then go back to DHCP!
If you give me the G5's Airport IP, I'll tell you what to try on the book.

  • Z87-G43 GAMING with Killer E2205, interrupted internet connection

Motherboard Z87-G43 GAMING with Killer E2205 Gigabit LAN controller
I am using the latest Killer Network Driver (driver only) 8.1.0.23, from MSI website.
    The issue:
Occasionally my internet is interrupted and my network card needs to be disabled and re-enabled again to re-establish internet connection.
I am quite certain that it is the network card or driver fault. The logic of this is that other users in my home connected to the same ISP modem has uninterrupted internet connection, while my interruption is happening. Also, as soon as I have disabled and enabled in “Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections”, the internet connection is back up. The process of disabling and enabling takes less than a few seconds.
My internet connection is automatically connected through the modem, I do not dial from my computer.
This problem has occurred ever since I got the motherboard, however it hasn’t really bothered me that much until now.
I recently started playing Counter-Strike Global Offensive, and for those of you who plays CS:GO, also knows that it is not cool to have interrupted internet connection during a competitive match.
Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
    Thanks

try a different network cable, different router port, try reset your router and/or load its default config and/or update it firmware

  • I've update iOS devices to 8.0 and now need to update xCode, but keep getting "unknown error -50" leaving me with a non-working internet connection - the only fix seems to be reboot of both iMac and router - any ideas?

Having updated all my iOS devices to iOS 8.0 I now need to update xCode to match. I've tried several times, and on each occasion have received an "unknown error -50" message after getting about 500Mb. After this my internet connection appears to be fully occupied, and the only fix appears to be a reboot of both the iMac (2.5GHx Core i5, 4Gb RAMm OS X 10.9.5) and the router (Netgear DG834 v5, firmware 1.6.01.34) At first I thought that the error had not stopped the download, but after waiting for 30 minutes the connection was still unresponsive, though traffic was indicated as passing through but the router status page, and no additional content had been added to the download. Anyone else having a similar problem and different ideas as to fixing it?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
