White disk indicator light is out, but no seeming performance problems.Problem needing service or ignore??

Hard disc indicator light on right front of laptop lights only periodically at startup or restart.  There appears not to be any performance problems.  Do I have a problem in the making?  Danger in the future?  Need service?  Or did I just choose the wrong option somewhere?

The white LED is not a disk activity or power indicator.  MacBooks don't have either of these.  The indicator will only light as mentioned by Dave Stowe... when your display is asleep it will come on and when your system is asleep, it will pulsate.  From what you have indicated, it seems to be working correctly.

  • Battery Charging Indicator Light Is Out

I own a tangerine iBook, OS X 10.4 operating system.
For a year or so charging the battery while the power cord in has been a "fussy" project -- sometimes it wouldn't charge until I moved the "plug-in-to-the-computer" end of the cord out ever so slightly. I bought a new power cord, but that didn't change things.
I don't have internet at hom, so most days I take my laptop and power cord to the public library and use the library's WiFi to look for work. Yesterday I came home, plugged in the power cord, and no battery charging light. I "jiggled" the cord, got out the old power cord and tried that one, then I tried a different electrical outlet. No battery charging indicator light, and the battery is discharging while I use it with the power cord.
I'm assuming this is an electrical problem that I can't fix, but can anyone fix it? When the battery runs out, will the iBook keep running when plugged into an electircal outlet, or is the electricity not getting to where it need to be?
I've had problems with the battery not charging before, and once I was advised to reset something, but I've alway had the indicator light on, so now I don't know if power is getting to my computer.
I went to About This Computer, clicked on Power and saw this:
    AC Charger Information:
      AC Charger (Watts):    0
      Connected:    No
      Charging:    No
which looks like it doesn't think I'm connected to any power source.

Yes, if resetting the PMU doesn't work, it does sound like the DC-in board has failed.
It is not an easy repair (especially for someone who describes herself as "NonTech."

  • Nic transfers out but can't receive packets.  Need (IRQ?) help.

The other day, I was having trouble with an Intel board with an on board Realtek nic. (see http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5282653&tstart=0)
I'm having a similar problem now with a Gigabyte 8i865GME-775 with an Intel 8550 onboard nic.
The interface is plumbed, up, running and properly configured as iprb0 once I added the appropriate line in /etc/driver_aliases which was irpd "pci8086,1051"
I did some snooping around in logs and I noticed that packets are going out but there are no packets coming in according to kstat iprd.
I tried apci_user_options = 0x2 as well as 0x4, 0x8 and 0. Didn't seem to make a difference. Is there something else besides just rebooting to do? I also tried the two set pcplusmp:apic_forceload = -1 and set pcplusmp:apic_use_apci = 0 separately without any luck.
I administer the machines I use to test and develop on so my administrative talents are obviously lacking and I'm in need of help with this.
There seems to be a shared resource conflict indicated by this line in dmesg
    pcplusmp: [ID 637496 kern.info] pcplusmp: pci8086,1051 (iprb) instance 0 vector 0x14 ioapic0x2 intin 0x14 is bound to cpu 1
The first time I saw it I was pretty sure it was cpu0 with the same vector.
According to the POST messages, the IRQ assigned to the nic card is 10, which doesn't seem to conflict with any of the other pci devices listed at that time. Is there a way to resolve this conflict from within Solaris? Or at least a way to view the currently assigned IRQ addresses? What's the relationship between vectors and irq's?
I'm going to disable some of the devices that are not needed to see if that helps. But I didn't find any way to change the irq of the nic or the cpu in this Award Bios.
There are a lot of great cutting edge features in Solaris 10, but these types of problems seem to have been plaguing people since at least 2003 from what I've seen. The last time I even worried about IRQ's, Intell processors came in two flavors SX and DX, and 9600bps was really fast. This seems to be a problem with the way Solaris 10's PnP code and not with the drivers.
Is there anything else that can be done to get this resolved?

Had to post this first thing in the morning because I'm all confused.
First, mother board is actually GA-8i865GME-775-RH. The onboard nic is EP82562G chip (10/100Mbit) which I believe is also referenced as just 82562G by Intel.
From prtpicl for the device I get:

    From http://www.pcidatabase.com/ I found,
    8086 is Intel
1051 is PRO/100 VE Network Connection
/boot/solaris/devicedb/master lists iprb when I grep for "PRO/100 VE". iprb plumbed but isn't working. From here http://blogs.sun.com/coolzephyr/date/200704 it's listed as ife
On another Sun Blog and a couple other sites I saw the pci1458,e000 part refered to Syskonnect and the skge driver. On other's that id series was also linked to nge, rtls, rge and gani. So I'm not even sure if I'm using the correct driver. Intel no longer seems to have Solaris drivers for the Pro/100 VE chips, the link to Syskonnect is old and broken and I'm not sure what their actual product is.
    In /etc/driver_aliases and /boot/solaris/devicedb/master for pci8086,1005
But if that's the case, why wasn't it detected during the installation?
I tried loading the nge, rtls, rge and even e1000g drivers just in case. devfsadm failed to attach them.
I went back to iprb. Made sure /etc/driver_aliases and /boot/solaris/devicedb/master reflected the correct pci8086,1051 location.
iprb0 gets plumbed but "no MII link detected" still shows up on boot.
    I'm at a complete loss.

  • CR52 disk indicator light

I've just installed a new CR52 CDRW. I used live update to get the latest BIOS. I understood that the indicator is supposed to stay on when a CD is in the drive - this does not work for me. The light works normally when the drive is reading etc.

  • Computer does not sleep when inactive.  White, solid indicator light on MBP.

I've done a bit of troubleshooting without favorable results.  Here's the situation:  The Macbook will not go to sleep from inactivity.  If I close the lid it sleeps just fine, but it won't  if I set the computer to sleep after a period of inactivity.
Take this example.  Display sleep set to 10 min, computer sleep set to 15 min.  At 10 minutes the screen will go black and the indicator will become solid white.  At 15 minutes nothing changes and the computer will stay in this state perpetually.
I've rebooted the computer without opening any apps and this all still occurs.  I've also checked the system with "pmset -g" and everything looks good.  Here is the output from my most recent test.

Others have found that it works for a couple of times and you will be back to the no-sleep state. Consider reset as well.

  • I ran through EXTREMELY heavy rain with my Iphone 4 in my pocket. My indicator is partially red but phone seems fine. Now what?

Am I out of the woods or is the phone going to slowly break down? This has never happened to me before. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Am I out of the woods or is the phone going to slowly break down?
Probably not. The moisture indicator you see is just one of many. Of course it will turn red if it's exposed to moisture, but if the inside remained dry there is no reason to suspect any problems will develop as a result of this one exposure.
There are several inside as well, and they're probably dry. If this is ever an issue with obtaining warranty repair, you can request that Apple examine the internal moisture indicators too.

  • Orange light keeps flashing - but all seems to be OK!

    HI,
just got an Airport Extreme Basestation and I set it up with no trouble and everything (for now the internet...have to check the printers and drives soon) runs OK. So why is the orange light still flashing? It says in the manual that it has no connection to the network - but then I shouldn´t have internet access...?
Also - how can I check if I have the fastest setting on my Airport station. I´m in Germany and the fastest n-version is - as far as I known - not allowed because of interference and some stuff. I´m afraid that when I have choosen Germany in the station-setup that it gave me the "weak" setting. Which setting / channel is he fastest?
    Thanks in advance

So why is the orange light still flashing?
A persistent, flashing amber light indicates that any of several potential conditions may require your attention:
    - The base station has not yet been configured because it is new, or the reset switch has been set.
    - You have selected a security configuration that is not recommended.
    - One of several other conditions, such as a disconnected ethernet cable or invalid IP address has been detected.
    (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305101)
Also - how can I check if I have the fastest setting on my Airport station.
Theoretically, the "802.11n only (5 GHz)" radio mode would provide the best throughput performance. Of course, all wireless devices connected would have to support this mode to not cause any throughput degradation. The next best would be "802.11n only (2.4 GHz)."

  • Dropped MacBook Pro i5 Mid 2012 Fan tries to spin but cuts out, Battery Charging Indicator light showing but cuts out

    Good evening,
A few weeks ago i dropped my MacBook Pro (i5 Mid 2012) and it failed to turn on, battery had charge in it at the time.
When i press the power button nothing happens. I have also tried resetting the SMC, nothing happens.
Next i plugged in the mag safe charger, before i pressed the power button i saw the charging light come on for a second then cut out.
If i press the power buttong, nothing happens.
I opened the back of the machine and tried the above steps again to see what happened.
    1. When i press the power button nothing happens.
    2. When i plugged in the mag safe charger, before ti pressed the power button i see the fan starts to spin for maybe 2 seconds then stops. I hear the hard drive start to spin but that also stops at the same time, during this the front batter charging indicator light also illuminates, but also cuts out.
Its like when you attach the charger it wants to do something but stops everything after 2 seconds. I left it plugged in for maybe 1 min and its just repeated this action maybe 20 times.
At no stage when i press the power buttong, plugged in or not does it react.
I have taken out the hard drive and plugged into another manchine as an external drive and it works perfectly. Hard drive is no problem! From what i can see all connections are ok, and appear to be plugged in correctly, no burn marks or damage visible.
    Logic board failure from impact?
    Thanks,
    Gary

  • Why do the three ethernet port green lights go out?

At random times my 802.11n (gigabit) AEBS seems to get very confused and I have to power cycle it. I noticed that one indication of things amiss is the fact that the 3 ethernet port status lights are out. Anyone know why that would happen?

I don't know, but I have the Airport Extreme with Gigabit ethernet, and I notice that the ethernet ports' lights go out whenever I make changes to the base station (ex. if I change port mappings). So after it reboots, that's when the lights go out. Everything seems to work fine after that though, even though the lights are out. The indicator light on the front is always on though.
Another member, Akislot, posted a similar problem in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5748864
So we are not alone, but I wonder if this issue is normal. I have tried both the soft reset and hard reset, and I have also reinstalled the firmware to the latest version (7.2.1). The issue still persists, and power-cycling allows the ethernet lights to return. Sometimes attempting to change the port mappings allows the lights to return, but not always. Power-cycling always allows the lights to return.
I just bought this 2 days ago too, so it is brand new.
If I still cannot find information online today, I think I will contact AppleCare. Does anyone know anything about this? Please let us know if you do. Thanks so much!

I have purchased an app from the app store and cannot seem to download it, the download statrs and then rapidly cuts out, it will not complete and seems to repeatedly go over the same few Mb.  I have previously downloaded large files and not had a problem with them.
I have tried restarting, checked my hard disk (and repaired a sector of the disk) and checked my connection but this seems to have no effect.  I have also disabled virus protection and my firewall to see if this has an effect.  I have also downloaded other (free) applications to test it since then and some of these download but not the larger ones.  Has anybody else encountered this?  Does anyone know how to solve it?

Can you download large files from other places apart from the App store, wondering if it is the App store or your internet connection.

White screen with a crossed out circle which flickers to the Apple logo sometimes, but won't open. What can I do to open it? (I do have my recently backed up data with me, but no loading discs for my computer.
    Hoping there is a solution,
    Diana

The make of the disk doesn't really tell us how your data is being backed up onto that disk. Do you know what software it uses?
For example Time Machine copies files every hour in a way that is not bootable, but you can extract those files & get all your data back into a working OS.
Carbon Copy Cloner duplicates a disk in a way that is bootable - it would appear when holding alt at startup so you could use that to boot & inspect the state of the internal disk.
It may also be Seagate's own software that does something different.
Please try recovery mode, if that works you can try repairing the disk in Disk Utility.
OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
If that works, select Disk Utility & see if the internal disk can be repaired in the first aid tab.
Recovery mode can also download OS X & reinstall it, however you really need to know if the backup contains everything before that is attempted, otherwise you may lose data. The OS is also around 5GB so you may have issues if your internet is capped or unstable etc.
    P.S.
I have no idea if this is helpful, but there may be help out there…?

  • Change the thin white border in lights-out mode?

It'd be nice if you could get rid of this border, or change it to grey or something... I couldn't find any way to adjust this, nor (surprisingly) much mention of it in this forum. Anyway, I find the bright white quite distracting.

I've just started using Lightroom, and whilst in general I really love it, I wasted about an hour looking for the preference to get rid of this garish thick white line in lights out mode.
In principle, lights-out mode is a brilliant way to review a photo without the noise of the interface.
However, I didn't take a photo of an incandescent rectangle, so why is this what I see in lights out mode - especially with darker shots?
I'd be just as miffed if you lined the edge of my picture with little yellow plastic ducks.
It is actually more offputting than the user interface. In the normal view, pictures are shown with a subtle shadow on a neutral grey. Why not use this by default?
If we are not to be able to choose how the edge is treated in lights out mode, then surely it's best to do nothing. I.e. just show the picture, but it would be better still if you could both choose the background picture and even how the edge is distinguished. E.g. 'don't show edge', 'show edge with shadow', 'show edge with line whose colour is ->(pick)' etc.
The other thing which would be good is if, in 'lights out mode', the image actually covered the available screen, or at least there was an option to zoom it to make the best use of the pixels available.
I signed up to this forum just to put this message up. If anyone else out there is irritated by this line, please add a message. Surely this matters to other people too?
please please please please please! (Is this helping?)
