WHITE flickering and shaking screen

I'm trying to fix my friend's iBook G3 (OS X 10.4.10) that she bought from another friend. I think both ladies have no clue about computers so I don't know what the iBook's history is.
Anyway, this is the problem: the screen flickers every now and then or goes stripy and shakes. The flickering is usually white, sometimes you can see the normal desktop and whatever programs I'm running through it. Every once in a while the whole screen goes white for a short while and then returns to normal, maybe shakes a bit for good measure. The programs work perfectly through the flickering. The iBook doesn't freeze at any point. A safe boot doesn't affect the flickering/shaking.
I've downloaded all updates and the SMARTReporter shows that the hard disk is ok. I've reset the PRAM and there's still a whole lotta shakin' goin' on.
I don't have the original cd so can't wipe out the iBook and re-install OS X.
Is the problem fixable or should I just give up on the lil' fella?
I'd be ever so grateful if somebody could help me with this!

mikado,
Even though your are in the Powerbook G3 Discussions, I believe the display issue on the iBook G3 is unfortunately the well-known failure of the GPU (graphics processing unit); the solder connection of this surface-mounted unit (ball-grid soldering) has failed and is making intermittent contact.
Apple did have an extended warranty for this issue but it has expired.

If you squeeze to the left of the trackpad (pressure applied to both top and bottom case), can you affect the display? If so, this should be the answer.
Since you are talking about the ladies as owners, I would suggest one of two approaches...either sell the iBook for parts on eBay or have it professionally repaired. Here is one service provider:

The screen on my MacBook has just started flickering and shaking up and down while I am using it. The screen starts flickering, shaking, gets pixelated, begins to freeze, and eventually fades to white. Why is it doing this? How can I fix it?
It is a newer MacBook, just over 1 year. It is well cared for, hasn't been dropped, etc. I don't want to pay for expensive repairs for such a new computer, and I certainly can't afford a new one!
I've tried updating my system like the Support page suggested, but no improvement. The problem started just the other day, and is progressively getting worse.
.... as I typed this, it did it again. Only, this time it did not flicker and shake, but got 'pixelated' (pixels came up checkered-like darkened and lightened). It did this for about 2 minutes and then stopped after I did not touch the computer.... Now it is flickering... HELP!

it means that it is not a hardware issue.  Other then that, Im not too sure.  Sorry I can't help you any further, but Im sure others members of this forum will read your question and be able to help you.  Good luck

  • MS6167 + Geforce MX440 - flickering and jumping screen

I recently bought an Inno3D Geforce MX440 64MB DDR for my MS-6167 motherboard. The screen was flickering and somtimes jumped too. I thought the Gfx board was bad and returned it for a Palit Daytona Geforce MX440 64MB DDR. The same behaviour turned up and I understood this had nothing to do with the graphic card. When I looked into the Nvidia configuration it told me 'Bus type: APG 1X'. I knew that my motherboard was 'AGP 2X' so I wondered why this was happening. Both those cards are AGP 2X/4X.
I suspect that the AGP speed is causing this. Why is the screen otherwise behaving like this? What possible cause could it be?
Sometimes the mouse pointer gets garbled. I'm running Windows XP Pro Swe.

I changed driver for the AMD-751 from 'AMD-751 Processor to AGP Controller (AMD)' to 'PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge'. Then it works better.
Maybe the performance isn\'t as good as it should be, but the flickering and jumping screen is gone.

  • Flickering and Freezing Screen on MBP 17"

I was working on my MBP 17" and hooked up my external HD with a lot of files on it.  I was looking for an old document, when the computer screen had a strange flicker and then I pointed my cursor to one of the apps on the bar and the screen froze.  I tried force quitting and couldn't get the comptuer to respond.  I was finally able to turn the computer off and then took out the battery (which is brand new...purchased in December 2013).  When I restarted the computer, it looked like it was up and running as normal and then it froze again.  I repeated the same process and it came to the gray screen with the apple in the center and froze with the beach ball not spinning.  I turned it off again and decided to go and hook up computer to power supply.  It seemed to working better.  This time I got messages from Apple saying that my computer had shut down incorrectly (which is true because I did it twice).  I was able to finally get it back up and running as normal on the power supply.  I decided to unplug it as I write this post and nothing has happened yet.  I am still booking an appointment with the genius bar just in case.
Has anyone had a problem such as this?
    Please help.
    Bradley

    Then I'd…
    1) Try reinstalling WoW and try to keep as few preference/game files as you can. Granted you need to keep your character and game play files etc etc so just backup the lot and restore as required.
    2) Contact Blizzard and check their forums and see if they know anything about this.

  • White Viewer and Canvas screens in FC Studio & Not an Idiot

    iMac
    2.66 GHz Core Duo
    2GB RAM
    OS X 10.5.8
    FCS 3
The viewer and canvas have apparently decided to flip to white and remain there. But first, they decided they'd rather display a strange, posterized/solarized version of whatever clip was loaded at the time.
Viewer prefs set properly to RGB
    Background set to black.
Changing display prefs from millions to thousands then back again - fail.
Clean reinstall of FC Studio - fail.
    QT test clip - 720x480, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Any ideas?

Viewer prefs set properly to RGB<</div>
Okay, you know that one. Good.
    Background set to black. <</div>
    Completely irrelevant. Not good.
Changing display prefs from millions to thousands then back again - fail. <</div>
Right, but a restart of FCP or the Mac might also be part of that debug just to rule out all possibilities.
Clean reinstall of FC Studio - fail. <</div>
Of course. Reinstalling Apple software is the LAST thing we'd suggest. Well, it's the last thing I would suggest. It is almost always a complete waste of time for a long list of reasons but mainly for only one: unlike Windows apps, Apple software just doesn't work that way.
    QT test clip - 720x480, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC <</div>
Okie dokie. When you play this clip in QT what happens?
when you launch Motion and attempt to run a previously saved comp what happens?
    Any ideas? < </div>
Debugging your particular issue is not going to be easy. Trying to figure out if it's FCP, QT, your graphics card, your monitor, or some other weird and obscure setting is a question, largely, of having a good feel for your system's behaviors and application inventory and history.
Stick with it, we're going to be asking you some really idiotic questions and asking you to perform some really lame tests.

  • What's wrong with my MacBook? It's flickering and beeps.

I bought my MacBook Pro 13" in October 2012. It worked fine and then on December 25 I was using it and a rainbow on vertical stripes started flickering and took over the screen so I had to hold down the power button and shut it down. I took it to the Genius Bar and she did nothing for me. About a month ago the screen started to flicker and was completely distorted. I took it in and they sent it to Austin where they reset the RAM. I got it back and yesterday I pressed the power button and the screen stayed black and it beeped three times then paused, beeped three times, paused, and continued in this pattern. And later last night I tried to turn it on again and it turned on but after about five minutes it flickered and the screen was completely distorted. So I forced shut down. The same thing happened again this morning with it working for about 5 minutes then distorting. This is annoying because I've taken it in twice and it continuously have the same problem. The only thing I have downloaded is Google Chrome. Before they sent it in and reset the RAM and to factory version I had Sims 3 on it but when I got it back Sims 3 wasn't on it because I was reset to factory settings, so Sims couldn't be causing it.

  • I have weird looking white lines on my screen

    Greetings guys,
Everytime I unlock my iPod Touch 4G it has some weird horizontal white lines and the screen in all washed out.
I have to press the lock button again and than bring it up again.
Do you know a good solution ?
    Thanks,
    Rebecca

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • My screen flickered and now all I get is black and white pixels - any ideas for a fix before I take to the Genius Bar?

MacBookPro is about 8 years old now so has had a good innings.  Last night the screen flickered, and then went off.  Turning Mac back on again brought black and white pixels - small rectangles all over the screen.  In background is little apple in middle of screen with the round rainbow timer thing vaguely visible.  This then sticks and I just have the pixels nothing else.
    Any ideas?
I have booked with Genius bar tomorrow but am feeling bereft!
    Thanks in advance.

It's certainly a hardware problem that only Apple techs would be able to properly diagnose. Keep your appointment...

  • Line on the screen of my ipod touch 4th gen. Starts left of the screen as a blue (bright backgr) or red (dark backgr) line becoming white halfway and going across screen. Any ideas/solutions?

I have an irritating line on the screen of my 4th gen ipod touch going left to right. It starts out as a blue line (with bright backgroung) or red line (with dark background). Switching backrounds will also switch the color of the line. Sometimes it stops halfway the screen. Sometimes the blue/red line becomes white somewhere halfway the screen and continuing as a white line to the other side of the screen. It mostly starts out as a normal screen and when using the blue/red line appears and when using some more the white part appears.Mostly in the beginning the line starts flickering and becomes more steady after a while.
I have searched on the internet but can only find info on some pixels acting weird (stuck/frozen/dead pixels). This is a whole line of pixels not doing what they are supposed to do.
Anyone an idea what this could be and how to solve it?
    Thanks,

Did you ever fix this? My daughters is the same. Treated with tender loving care, we reset to factory and it disappeared but was back again after 2 or 3 days. Still in warranty so going to take to the genius bar, however a bit concerned that because it belongs to an 11 year old they are going to assume she's damaged it.

  • Why is my 2007 HP V17 monitor screen flickering and going black?

I have an old  2007 HP V17 monitor attached with a VGA cable to an early 2008 Macbook running on OS 10.6.8 software  via a  DVI- mini connector (this is also my desktop computer).
About 6 months ago, the HP display started going white and sometimes gray for a few seconds before the image would return, and a couple of times I had to unplug it and restart the Macbook before it came back.  I followed Apple's instructions for testing whether the problem was in the computer  (= resetting the system by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC), but the computer tested okay.  I then purchased a new VGA cable and DVI-mini connector, but the problem persisted.
Today the HP screen suddenly went black (first time going black) and stayed black.   The power button stayed lit and if I pressed the Volume or Auto buttons, the "Volume" etc. message boxes did appear, so the device's backlight is apparently working and not burnt out (unless the backlight has nothing to do with the message boxes showing up, which for all I know may be the case).  However, the Desktop showed up only on the Macbook.
I checked all the connections, removed the DVI connector and plugged it back into the Macbook several times, but the HP screen stayed black, so I removed the DVI connector in order to type this message on the Macbook.  Then, as I was writing this, I decided to plug it back into the Macbook one more time--and sure enough, the display is back!
I love this monitor, which is the perfect size and ergonomic height for my setup, so I'd hate to have to replace it.  Can anyone tell me
Given the information above, what's the probable reason for the flickering and going to black?  If it's the computer, what could it be?  Can I solve this problem myself? (See above; I couldn't find any other ways to test the computer in the Apple articles database.)
If not, could a monitor this old  be repaired?
If so, how much would repairing it cost, since buying a new monitor that I probably wouldn't like as much would cost upwards of $300?
Thanks so much for any advice out there!

    Hello @turtlewiz,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that your HP V17 Monitor has gone black and is not displaying anything. I am providing you with some steps for you to try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
If the issue persists after this you can try the monitor on another computer to see if it continues. If it does it appears to be a physical issue and I think it would be best if you contact HP Technical Support for repair options.

  • The white in my MacBook monitor flickers and stays as aqua and everything has an aqua aura instead of white

Sometimes the white portion of the screen turn aqua and when I move the top cover it flickers back and forth but often stays aqua.  As my power source has juiced up the machine, it looks like it may have disappeared.  Maybe it just does this when the battery is not powered up above 50%???

    Morning Jonilight3,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Apple Hardware Test (AHT) contains a suite of diagnostics that will test the hardware of your computer.
Apple Hardware Test is located on the Applications Install Disc 2 and should be included with your computer.

  • IMAC and external screen--screen flickering and erratic mouse behavior

I have purchased a screen Medion 25.5 inch to connect it to my IMAC 27 inch.
I have noticed two unexpected behaviours:
    - from time to time, after the IMAC comes out of the SLEEP mode, the external screen is flickering, I need to put the IMAC to sleep one or several times before the display of the external screen becomes stable.
    - since I connected the external screen, the behavior of the mouse is highly erratic, eg when I move the mouse by a fraction of a millimeter, the display of the mouse pointer moves by half a screen, or even disappears completely. I have performed many tests, with several apple mice, a Dell mouse and a Microsoft mouse. As soon as I completely disconnect the screen (not only power the screen down) the mouse works normally again. I have now decided to stop using the external screen until a software update resolves the situation.
    Any advice?
    Patrick

When my 2008 24" iMac started to die from overheating, two of the symptoms I would see would be white flickering from the bottom going about half way up, like it was going blank and repainting the screen over and over. Also, the mouse pointer would jump erratically to all the edges and corners of the screen. After a few seconds, it might recover or it might freeze. I would use a program like iStat Pro to see what your temps are when you attach that screen. I suspect it may be excess heat due to the GPU now pushing two screens instead of 1?
Also try diags, and all those reset thingies people keep mentioning over and over.

Help! I have a flickering white screen but I can still turn on my IPod Touch! It is a white flickering but the bottom half of the screen is unseeable. How do I fix it?

Try the follwing to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If you still have a problem then you likely have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

There is nothing wrong with your Dell, it will work fine with any MacbookPro. I have been using Dell displays for over 12 years with many different Mac models. I have two 21" Ultra Sharp displays working side by side to design a Keynote presentation right now.
    The issue your having is with the way Keynote  takes control of the video output to both displays, it sends the presentation signal to one and the presenter display to the other, this is set up in;
    Keynote preferences > Presenter display.
If you want to show a wesite or another app on  either display,  use application switcher:
press the the  command key on the keyboard, then the tab key; a row of applications will show what applications are running, choose which one you want to show. Use command  > tab to return to Keynote.
