White/Grey screen

My ibook works fine. That is the hard drive boots up and I can hear the system work. When I Plug it into an external display I can see the desktop and all the applications work. I do, however cannot see anything but a white/grey screen on the built-in display.
A few days prior to this I recieved an external display adapter that connected the s-video/RCA to a monitor as opposed to the regular VGA external plug in. I'm not sure if this may have caused the problem or if its just a coincidence. I have reset the RAM as well as the PMU an have had no luck. Do I need a new display or is there something else Im missing here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since the external works fine the GPU is good. This sounds like a problem with the LVDS cable. It's on the left side as you look at the display. Depending on if it's a 12 or 14" it plugs into the logic board. Either it's unplugged or (more likely) the cable is damaged, usually right at the hinge point.

Not sure how that works? I'm here on a 14" G4 1.2 GHZ and there is no S-Video out.

  • I have a white/grey screen and none of the suggested operations have helped, what should I do?

I have a white/grey screen and none of the suggested options have worked - I have tried all the suggestions on Apple support

Ok, I've had this problem before and contacted Applecare support and they told me that it was an issue with the RAM inside the Mac or something like that. They told me to refresh the ram, and it fixed the problem so that's what I'd recommend.  Here's how to do it.
Hit Power button, then press and hold Command + R + Option + P at the same time.
This resets the residual ram that is causing the start up to hang.
Try that, I hope it works for you.

  • Macbook Air - White/Grey Screen with a folder and a question mark

Out of the blue , my macbook air stopped starting up and strted to show me a white/grey screen with nothing but a folder and a question mark . After searching on the internet for solutions and trying to reset my PRAM setting , it still wouldn't boot up . I opened up disk utility and going through internet recovery , I ran the first aid verification on my MAC OS X Base System and it said that it found no problems . I can't restore or erase by the way and i really wouldn't erase my files as I have very important files on my mac . Moving on , I tried to reinstall OS X , but apperently it needs a disk to install OS x on and since none appear , I tried using an USB . After creating a partition and erasing everything on my USB , not happy about that  , it wasn't big enough for the OS . So now I am basically stuck in the mac white screen Limbo .
Any sort of help would be fantastic and please do keep in mind that this is a macbook air and I do not have a place to put DVDs into . All I have read on different forum pages didn't help so i decided that it would be a good idea to create my very own thread . I am not very sure about the Mountain Lion version ,but I am not very sure that it matters .

  • Macbook won't start up, white/grey screen appears folder and question mark.

My macbook was freezing up, so i pressed the power button to shut it down and it won't restart. It just goes to the blank white/grey screen and a picture of a folder with a question mark on it shows up. What should I do?

I am going to try and explain this.
When you purchase a Mac, that machine comes with a license to run the current Mac OS at the time of purchase. The license resides with the computer, not with the installation media. Therefore, if I purchased 3 iMacs, at the exact same time, and they were the same model, I could use the install media from one on any of the other machines (and don't tell me it won't work, because I have done it before). This does not violate the EULA. Do you really think that a company that purchases hundreds or even thousands of computers would keep the install media for each one? The media is not tied to the computer; it's the license for OS X that is bound to the computer. Consider when you purchase a family pack of Mac OS X, you don't get 5 discs, you get 5 licenses, and one disc.
What the EULA is stating, is that you cannot have one license running or installed on two computers. It does not say that you cannot use the same install media on different computers (assuming you have the proper number of licenses). You are also wrong in saying that you can uninstall Mac OS X from one Mac, and then use its restore discs on another computer legally. That is only legal for "Retail" copies of OS X. I believe the restore discs are the equivalent to an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer in the PC world of computing) version of OS X. I am almost positive they are non transferable.

  • Help! Stuck on white/grey screen apple logo spinning wheel

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me?
I have a MacBook pro snow leopard 10.6 It won't start up it freezes on the white/grey screen with the apple logo. I have tried it in safe mode it has the bar underneath as it loads up to half way it goes off & the spinning wheel just carries on spinning forever!
I have tried cmd & v typed in a few things that I saw other people do then on the black screen white text the page is full of  Disk0s2: I/O Error   tried rebooting but same thing happens doesn't start up.
Then I put my mac os x snow leopard 10.6.3 installation, features and refinements disc in but still nothing! I'm stuck anybody know what to do?
Thanks in advance if you can help me.

If it won't boot with the just the c key held down off the disk, it could mean there is a firmware password set.
If it won't boot off the disk with just the option/alt key held down, that  means firmware has been wiped if all you see is a white screen.
If it has a firmware password, it should have asked you for it with a screen with a lock icon on it.
However it also could mean there is a hardware problem or the 10.6 disk is dirty, scratched, defective or not from Apple (warz).
Or your keyboard is bad or your using a external one and not the built in keyboard.
I think you might have to look into the possibility your EFI firmware has been hosed.

    Need machine/operating system identification help?
Find the serial number, thus the model number and thus gives the operating system that originally came with the machine. However gives not what operating system version the boot drive was later upgraded to. Do not use older OS X verisons to repair newer verisons. It is possible to use the original operating system version installed on another boot drive to recover files from a later operating system non-booting drive.

    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1559   http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
If the computer just ignores the at boot key commands (without showing the firmware password request) especially if you boot to a white screen (no initial boot screen), it might be your EFI firmware stored in NVRAM memory has been wiped. EFI is like a powerful operating system type firmware that loads before OS X or Windows in Bootcamp loads, programs can be installed in EFI, even malicious ones. (why it's very important to trust the source of your instaled software)
To restore EFI you need to use the identification links above to find the exact model of your machine. Then use another computer to download the correct EFI firmware from this Apple.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Then follow these instructions to burn it to a cd or USB (untested) and apply it to the non-booting Mac. It likley will take 2 reboots for it to take hold and return the at boot key commands.

  • Firefox opens, but only gives a white/grey screen and does not do anything further

I have re-started and re-installed Firefox, but nothing works. When I try to delete the profiles via run command, there pops up a little black window, but nothing further. Please tell me how to get Firefox working again. Thanks!

hello pvisser, other users with this problem all had an embedded intel hd3000 graphics card with an old driver present. in case this also applies to you, here would be a link to update the driver, which in turn should also address the black firefox problem: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=23764 (for win7 64 bit)
in case this doesn't solve the issue or does not apply to your system, start firefox into safemode '''by pressing the shift key while the application is launching''' & disable hardware acceleration in the firefox ''menu ≡ > options > advanced > general'' (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

  • Big noise while playing a video, stuck at grey screen

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro 15inch which I bought in Jan 2012. It came with Mac Lion 10.7. I have regularly updated it as required. Yesterday afternoon while I was watching a video (from my hdd) the screen goes blank but the laptop is still on. I tried pressing escape and force exit but nothing came on screen. So then I close my laptop, wait for sometime and open it, it gives huge weird noise which is when I force shutdown. I wait for sometime and star again and the grey screen with the Apple logo have scans and is sort of greenish. So then I find solution, run Disk Utility in Safe mode. Things get fixed. I run avast scan and shut down thinking maybe it needs to cool down.
Day 2: Today morning I start the laptop and it works fine. I use it for 2hrs and shut it down. Hours later I try switching it on and the scanlines are back! This time I can't get into safe mode, tried recovery over the net but it gave a -2002D error. Now all it does is the Apple logo comes on with the scanlines. Then lines go away and it smooths out like it is supposed to be and then nothing. No color wheel, the grey screen looks like it is almost white. I do see the mouse pointer sometimes.
Also, right after the logo for a split sec before the white/grey screen slightly bolder scanlines appear all over the screen in horizontal sets.
I don't know what else I could do. Please can anyone help.
I don't know if this is important but when I was watching videos on YouTube after a while one of them started pixelating and then got back to normal.

Ignore the past comment abt the video pixelating. Sorry my mistake.

  • Satellite L750 - Grey screen on startup

    Hi Guys,
I have Toshiba Satellite L750 just under 2 years old. It has developed an intermittent problem, upon boot up it comes up with white/grey screen and would disappear when the log in screen is ready. Some times tapping the top left of screen resolves this. Other wise I have to keep rebooting. I have checked the cable connections from screen to mother board and they seem fine.
I have also connected my laptop to an external display whilst it shows the grey screen and the external display shows up fine. The screen is not cracked either.
    Please help. Thanks

Googling around you can find many threads on different forums about similar issues and many different explanations why something like this can happen. On this virtual way it is not easy to say what can be wrong with your notebook but it is definitely hardware related issue.
In my opinion you should either continue to use your notebook until it can be possible and later when the issue becomes worse search for solution or contact nearest Toshiba service and ask for help.
Usually warranty is 2 years (depends on country) but if you have opened it on your own warranty is canceled now.

  • Grey screen and continuous beeping (macbook pro 2010)

Hi, I unplugged my computer from its display/keyboard/HDD setup to use it portably and then upon waking it from sleep - it froze and a continuous beeping began from within the computer.
When I started the computer I get the bong and white/grey screen (completely blank) and the beeping begins immediately. But thats as far as it goes.
I've looked online and there's a lot said about RAM related beeping but having removed the RAM i know this not to be the case as the beeping I hear is much quieter and far more regular than any of the loud RAM beeps.
Safe boot, pram reset and cmd s did nothing.
Any ideas whats wrong and how to solve?
    Thanks

    Hello there, whistler2014.

  • TS2570 Startup:grey screen,then black,then grey,then white,then desktop. How can I fix this?

Normal startup, from grey screen to black screen, to blank grey screen, then blank white screen, then to normal desktop. All apps appear to work properly. Why the black and white screens? How can I fix this?

This is the KB article you need: Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
The printer problem is another story, and no I don't believe the solution is to upgrade OS X.
Could you please post a brand new question about the printers? This one won't get much attention if it is marked "solved" and the printer problem will require a new solution. Thanks!

  • G5 Grey screen & flashing white square after start-up & unresponsive key.

After pressing the start button on my G5, instead of the usual blue start-up screen I got a grey screen with a small white square with a blue earth-globe, that flashed on & off. This eventually turned into a small folder with a finder face alternating with a ? mark. 10 attempts (over 1/2 hr) at switching on & off got no-where, so I left the grey screen going and after 10 minutes the G5 suddely went into the blue screen loading mode & then my chosen desktop picture. All apps seem to be OK.
I have not had this experience with my 2 year old flat panel G4 & I am wondering if I should do something remedial to prevent this happening again? The question is What? I am relectant to turn the G5 off in case I get a re-run so will leave it to sleep pro tem.
I have had this Mac for about 5 months from new & it has behaved itself until now. I am a novice so would welcome any help.
    Thanks - Terry Wallis.

    Terry,
Personally, I have always put the computer to sleep as I have been told this is less stressful for the hardware than a restart from a cold shutdown. I haven't had any hardware problems with this iMac G3 since new in 2001 so I tend to agree with this practice.
