White halo around black type

A thin white halo is showing up around my large black type and also around the black image I placed in the document. The background is purple so the halo is very noticeable. I tried a number of things to get rid of it:
-I rasterized just those objects and that made the halo worse.
-I took those objects out and tried replacing them in InDesign, but the halo still came back in the PDF.
-I made sure I was using standard black (K:100) and not rich black. No difference. I tried with PMS Black, and no difference.
The only thing that makes the halo go away is converting the file to RGB but I can't because this is going to print.
HELP!

excellent!
I think you can be confident your black text will print correctly.
I would talk to the separator or printer or whomever you can get in touch with to discuss the black artwork.
My guess, and this is just a guess, it that you may need a screen of the purple underlaying the black. This would be an added channel in photoshop.
If you have no idea who is printing the poster and have no contact with them, the best you can do is put a notes layer on your file: callouts indicating that you black text is set to overprint and that the art needs trapping.
I'm an illustrator, not a production artist, so I'm not your best answer source. If I couldn't talk to the printer in person, I would call one of my prepress pals for advice... which is about what you are doing here. Maybe one of our prepress regulars can help with this.
The purple appears lighter in Overprint Preview because Overprint Preview always attempts to render an accurate display of the color from its PMS Lab specification. You have selected an uncoated ink setting, so the Lab spec for it is somewhat washed out from what the coated version would be, so Illustrator is attempting to display that.
Are you actually printing your poster on uncoated paper?

  • White halo around exported flash gif animation

I am working on a Imac using Flash CS5. I can create a Flash animation with a transparent background
but there is a slight white halo around the images. How do I export a Flash animation as a gif with
absolutely no white halo at all. Is this possible? or wheneve you turn a vector to a gif there will
always be a slight white halo. I have brought the image into Photoshop and could painstakingly
use the eraser tool but there must be a way to mass assembly the process. I have tried Fireworks CS5
and Photoshop, whenever I open the Flash gif animation there is a slight white halo.
Look forward to the techy with the answer
    thanks

If your document stage is white and you are not viewing the GIF on a white or light background then the halo is probably due to the antialiasing of the pixels at the edges of your graphics. The GIF format does not support alpha transparency, so you end up seeing the smoothed edges as fully opaque pixels. There are several ways to address this:
Uncheck the "Smooth" option for animated GIF export. This disables antialiasing, but sacrifices image quality.
Change your stage color to better match the background color behind the GIF. Medium gray can be an acceptable compromise for non-uniform or unpredictable backgrounds.
Use another file format that supports alpha transparency. On the web, the only real alternative is SVG, but the conversion is painful.
Manually remove those troublesome pixels from the animated GIF. Also quite painful.

  • How to create image slice with transparent background without white halo around?

Hi, I want to make slice image with transparent background. I set the slice option background color to my background color. But when the image is on my html page set against the same background color, it has white halo around:
How can I get rid of the white halo?
I need the slice image to have transparent background and not have a color background because it's going on a rollover button with the background change. I don't want it to look like this on rollover:

    >it looks to me like you built it with that "halo" to start with.
No, I didn't put in the halo myself. The shape is a character from the Webdings font. It's set to some darker fill color and set on a transparent background. Photoshop put the white halo there after "Save For Web".
    > Make your graphic on a transparent background and Save for Web
    I did exactly that, see:
I set the slice background to my color. I try the Matte option and come out the same with white halo.
It seems I'm not making Photoshop antialias to my background color, instead Photoshop just antialias to white.
What else do I need to do?

  • White halo around image

    Hi there,
I have a font set to a  large size 1065 pt as it's for a banner - however I am getting a slight grey white border around the image, kind of like a faint stroke but the stroke is turned off. Turning a stroke on matching my font colour doesn't help.
I have tried doing the font in a small point size to begin / converting that to outlines and then upscaling but the halo returns. I have tried exporting the design as a jpg and scaling down to sensible screen size and the halo remains all be it in reduced nature.
Any advice on how to avoind this as I don' want to sent the doc to print if the artefact remains even then.
    Ta,
    Al.

    Thanks guys.
I think the black text halo is ok - I have attached a screen shot of the edge of a letter.
However I am seeing jagged edges on the pink abstract background.
Is this there to stay and will it be shown on the print?
For the record it is an Illustrator smudge shape scaled up with the artistic watercolour brush outline applied to it.
Noticably the screen shot which is my second attached example is direct from Illustrator print screen and this shows no jagged edge. Hmm at this size it's hard to see but it is there.

  • Thin white halo around objects

After I outline strokes or text I get a white halo, kind of looks like a thin stroke, around the object after I place it over a colored background. It's not a stroke though. Is there any way to fix this problem?

It might not actually be there, it might just be illy showing you the edge of the item, it's "kind" like that sometimes. Press CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+S (web export) and take a look, or switch it to pixel preview. I use the web export to check when I see odd things like that.

  • White (halo) around gif image on the web

How do I get rid of the thin white border around my transparent gifs?

A tutorial describing the technique can be fond here:
    http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/transparent/transparent.htm
(Description of problem posted by Mathias Vejerslev)
A GIF only supports 1-bit transparency - either full transparency or full opaque. - Nothing inbetween. So, if your graphics has anti-aliased (fuzzy) edges, Photoshop has to make those semi-transparent pixels either fully transparent or fully opaque (by removing them, or adding an opaque color 'under' the fuzzy edges. This is the Matte.
Creating aliased graphics (no fuzzy edges) eliminates this problem, but you´ll have a harsh-looking graphic.
Ways around this, besides the matte color and aliased graphics, includes copying your HTML background graphic into your transparent file, and make a custom, aliased Matte (edge around your graphic), then place the transparent file pixel-precise on your webpage.

  • Thin white line around black .ai logo and drop shadow question

    Hello,
There's a very thin white line all around a black .ai logo I made when placed on a color background. It shows up in printing and acrobat (PDF % compatibility) too. Also, is there any way to get a transparent drop shadow (no white boxes) when saving as eps.
    Thanks
Running OS10.4.11 In Design CS3, intel mac.

Is the logo rasterized in Illustrator? It sounds like something was antialiased against a white background.
    >Also, is there any way to get a transparent drop shadow (no white boxes) when saving as eps
No. EPS does not support transparency. If an area is not fully transparent (because nothing is drawn there) then it is fully opaque. PDF and AI support transparency.

  • White lines around black

I know that some similar things have been discussed.  The only reason that Im bringing this up is that some have said that a white jagged line around a black object will not appear in print, and to check it by making a pdf out of it.  I made a pdf and the white line still shows up.  If I take this to the printer tomorrow is the white line going to print if it shows in the pdf?  or do I have nothing to fear?
    Thanks for your help!

You can tell if it is only a preview artifact by zooming in incrementally and seeing if the white increases proportionally or of it stays abut the same thickness as you zoom in closer.

  • Unwanted yellow shadow / halo around black text

I'm getting a yellow shadow / halo / highlight around the (black)  text in my documents.  It is not around all words.  The shadow is always yellow.
Does anyone know what this problem is and how to fix it?

Attributes such as fills and strokes can be applied at the layer level, the group level and the object level.  Look in your appearance panel to see where the mystery yellow fill is (or maybe it's a thin yellow stroke?)
You can see whether or not attributes are assigned to whatever in your layer panel.
In this example, note the darkened appearance marker dots (there's a real name for them, but it's not coming to me)  If I had effects/fills/other attributes assigned to my group, it would be darkened as well.
Watch what happens in your appearance panel as you click on those dots.
With text, there is an additional level of complexity, the character level.  You can apply a fill in the appearance panel that covers over the fill assigned at the character level.  If your issue is happening only on text, this is the likely culprit.
With your text selected, this should be close to what you see in your appearance panel.  Double click on the "Characters" line to drill in there, presumably showing this:
It's also possible that you've got a yellow outer glow or drop shadow assigned somewhere in there.
Hopefully this makes sense.  I went a little deeper than I intended...

  • How do I get rid of jagged, pixelated halo around type in Dreamweaver?

    Dear Dreamweaver Forum,
I am studying the essential series of video tutorials on Dreamweaver CS3 via Lynda.com.
I am also currently, slowly but surely, putting together a website to function as a resume, cover letter and portfolio all in one.
I am currently in the middle of creating headings and images that will function as rollover buttons.
I currently have a problem with a jagged or pixilated halo appearing around type I'm creating in Illustrator CS3 and placing into Dreamweaver CS3.
The process I’m using so far is the following:
In Dreamweaver CS3, I’m using div tags. I will place a div tag on a page. I will then move it to the desired location on the page and size it to my needs.
I then take .gif file of type I created in Illustrator CS3 and drag it from the files panel and to the web page I’m working on. When I do this, I notice a halo around the type (please see inserted image below).
How do I get rid of this jagged or pixilated halo?
I created the type in Illustrator CS3 and then go File > Save for Web and Devices. In the 4-up dialog box that appears, I then save the type as a .gif file.
    Please see images below:
    Thanks for your help!

How do I get rid of this jagged or pixilated halo?
Don't use transparency! GIF and 8bit PNG only allow one transparent color, resulting in frizzled edges with antialiased content. If you know the type goes on a black background, save it with a black background....

  • Encode results in "halo" effect around black text...

    Hello,
I'm not sure where the problem lies. I am encoding a project and I have noticed a problem primarily around black text that appears throughout.
    Image:
    *Here are the Compressor settings:*
    Image:
What Can I do to lessen the "halo" around black text?
    Lathe

Like all heavy compression codecs such as DV, MPEG2 has serious issues with what we call high risetime pixel transitions. Reduce the detail level. You may need to add some preprocessing blur to help diminish the mosquito noise. Make the text slightly transparent. Add a nice soft drop shadow. If you're going to add an outline, make it softer than you think is necessary.
If you are merely encoding a file that you cannot change, you will need to study the MPEG2 compression discussions very carefully. Encoding is a dark art, loaded with uncomfortable compromises and difficult decisions that require lowered expectations. Encoding output is directly proportional to the effort put into programming new settings at every scene change.

  • Black Text Has White Halo When Save as PDF

I have 12pt black text on a green background and when I save as a PDF, a white halo pops up under some of the text, but not all of the text. On the words it does it on, it is as if I had the same word typed in white text with black text on the top. If I flatten the image first, it goes away but the text losing quality.

  • Iphone 4s Halo/ White edge around screen

    Please help!!
I replaced the screen on my 4S.
When switched on it works perfectly except a white transparent "halo" around the outside of the screen.
Its like the brightness is too high for 10mm all the way around the edge is the best way of describing it.
Someone must know what the devil is wrong with it....??
    thanks in ainticipation

Your screen in not made to specifications. Something is too thick and the LCD Display is being pressed (smashed). The pressure on the display is giving the halo. Most likely the Front Glass is wrong, too thick. You need entire new Front Screen Assembly, unless you decide the Halo is OK.
Less likely but still possible, some object, ie screw, screwdriver, protection sheet was left in during the replacement process, and needs to be removed.

  • CS6 Photoshop Problem? Grey/Black Halo around feathered transparency??

Is anyone aware of a gray/black halo around feathered transparency objects. The halo occurs where the solid area of pic feathers to the transparent.
NOTE: Image looks fine in Photoshop(CS6) but when placed in Indesign (CS5) a black halo appears on page
This only happens when image is an RGB Tiff and layer mask is used to create transparency. If image is saved as .psd then it is fine. Also when RGB tiff is converted to CMYK then this is also ok.
I kook forward to anyone's suggestions.
Ideally I could just start using psd format, but I have to handle alot of images that are already in RGB tiff and it is time consuming to have to open and re-save all of these.
Adobe Guys, what have you done!! Photoshop CS5 RGB tiffs are still working fine. Please help me!!??
I look forward to a fix for this
    Thanks.

Please see below for the visual explanation.
Please note the black halo on second image on top row.
If feathered edge is increased on mask, then so does the halo.
Halo will print as seen when job is sent to final PDF.
    Thanks for your help Noel.
