White Intel iMac display and crash fix

My 20" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo had become almost useless due to freezes and crashes- with NO crash reports in the logs.
They were often preceeded by video glitches, so I assumed it was a bad video card- unfortunately soldered to mother board.
Apparently, from forum postings, this is not an uncommon problem. The computer would run longer if the day was cooler, but rarely more than 10 minutes, so I suspected it was aggravated by heat.
Then I found this post from Bodomann on an Apple Support forum:
"Following up on my previous posting regarding my son's late model 2006 iMac that required a $900 logic board replacement:
Turns out the problem is apparently related to a bad CPU temp sensor. I installed 'iMac Fan Control' (Google it) which reported the CPU temp always at 32 degrees Fahrenheit (obviously incorrect). The same software allowed me to adjust the CPU fan manually. After multiple trials I set the CPU speed to 2800RPM after which the system would run forever - never freezing with the dreaded grey box 'reboot me' screen. I tried several times reverting the software to default speeds and the system would always crash within 10 minutes. "
I downloaded free Fan Control 1.2 for Imac from Derman Enterprises (they have an Intel iMac and a Mac Book/Pro version). It installs as a system preferences control panel. I cranked up all three fan speeds. The fans sped up noticeably. Horizontal lines have gone from screen (so far), no color artifacts and no crashes yet. I may have a real computer back! Hope Apple checks this out-
The control panel also gives the temps sensors are reporting at the CPU, hard drive and DVD drive. The CPU sensor reports the CPU temp as 32 degrees F- which is clearly wrong, unless Apple has been installing little refrigerators inside.
So thanks to Bodomann for posting- Hats off and three cheers to Derman and Cristoph for source code.

Foregone you have saved my life! I was fed up and disgusted with the way this machine was behaving, always freezing and crashing and with the crazy random horizontal lines. Then I downloaded the Fan Control 1.2 and have had a crash-free, line-less night ever since.
I had tried adding more RAM, cleaning the vents, the old "zap the PRAM" trick from back in the day, even my Mac guru buddy hadn't a clue what to do. After many searches on this forum to try to figure out the line issue (thinking it was a graphics card problem), not even thinking I could ever fix the crashing issue, I stumble upon your post and now I am the savior of the family. My computer game-loving 13 year old boy just about cried with joy. Now his games won't crash all the time!

  • 24" intel iMac Flatlining and Crashing

It started a few weeks ago but has become a regular thing now, the screen has a little fit and lots of multi coloured lines appear across the screen and then the whole computer crashes.
Sometimes a restart will not solve the problem, you have to try it around 3 or 4 times before the gray start up screen appears again. Otherwise you just hear the hard drive running but the screen is not active.
Any ideas? i'm going to phone up apple just thought i'd check first.

It's under warranty so I would take it in to the service center and have them fix it. Could be a bad video card.

  • Intel imac display glitch and involuntary restart

Just want to know if anyone else has experienced this specific problem, there are plenty of complaints about intel imac displays but I can't be bothered to sift through them all trying to find a match for my problem.
A couple of months ago I was watching a video in quicktime and noticed that my screen was glitching and flashing fragmented diagonal lines - like a commodore 64 loading type thing. Then the spinning-ball came up and a force quit didn't do anything so I had to force shut down. I started up and it occured again. Then the screen went blank/black, but still lit up, and restarted without me doing anything. It also got stuck during start up the second time this occured. I panicked and ran out to buy a 500GB external drive, backed up all of my work and then re-installed mac osx from disk, archive and install job. This seemed to sort it and for the following two months it seemed OK. No sign of any problems.
Since then I have updated from 10.4.7 to 10.4.10 (which I have suspicion that it screwed the firmware in my motu 828 firewire audio interface, costing me a £130 repair - but that's another painful story).
It happened again tonight (the screen thing, not the motu). And the ball came up and I couldn't do anything. Force shut down, restart - screen glitching again. Then I had 2 unexpected restarts, one getting stuck in startup. Then a successful startup but accompanied by the glitchy graphics, mainly red/pink pixellated diagonal lines flickering in and out. I ran a disk first aid - no problems. Did a disk permission repair. Shut down and ran a hardware test, the first few minutes of the test the screen was still at it but then stopped glitching, hardware test found no errors (it was an extended test too). Now I'm back on it and it's all OK.
    Any suggestions/similar stories?
When it occured 2 months ago I had the original ram that came with the imac. Now I have 2x1GB sticks of crucial ram.

That's it! Well, that's what I have. Unfortunately, I don't know about the cause, but I don't ever recall having it prior to an update going back about a year ago. I recall an update, and that update being immediately followed by some sort of Apple Graphics something-or-other. I feel pretty certain that's when I first noticed this. I just had my LCD replaced for another reason, but I think you'll agree, it's not an LCD issue. In my case, browser activity, scrolling up or down in a page, seems to be the most common trigger. I've also seen "pieces" of the torn page, on the screen when minimizing the browser to the dock (usually Firefox, but I think I've seen it with Opera and Safari too). Is there a way to find update packages installed somewhere? I'd know it if I saw it, and I'd definitely try removing that suspect package/update.

  • Intel Imac display problems

I have an old intel imac (17 inch white screen) bought just over 5 years ago.  The imac has just 'died', the screen will not display anything.  It will chime on starting up and I can hear activity but nothing displays on the screen.
I returned it to my local Apple store, upon investigation they said the graphics card had gone (£500 to replace) so I bought a brand new iMac a few days ago.
All of my data is backed to up an external hard drive.
I run a database programme on the old iMac called 4D, which has a huge amount of data stored in it (all backed up).
I have installed the most current version of 4D on my new Imac, but it will not open the data on my back-up (error message: data cannot be published).
I have installed my old original version of 4D from my original bought CDs, but again it will not read the data.
The guy in the Apple shop gave me instructions on how to link my old 'dead' iMac, to my MacBook Pro via a Firewire cable, and using Target Disc Mode, I should be able to access the dead iMac hard drive on my MacBook ... have just tried this and the dead iMac hard drive will not show up on my MacBook.  It does not appear on the desktop as suggested by the guy in the Apple shop, nor does it show up in System Preferences > Start Up Disk as an alternative disc to boot from.
What I need to do is access the 4D database on the dead imac, so that I can export the data as a text file, to put into a new application on my new iMac.
Althought the data is backed up to the external hard drive, it is backed up 'in the database' ...  and I need to EXPORT the data, which I cannot do unless I can open the database ... which I can't !
I'm going round in circles with this, so if anyone can please point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Rock of Ages.

make sure you execute the instructions for target disk mode properly, because your screen is dead and you won't see the icon displayed.
    see here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8443.html

  • I am missing the os 10.4 disks for an early white intel imac.

I am missing the os 10.4 disks for an early white intel 24" imac. Is there any where to download it. I have 10.4 disks for an mac pro 10.4 and macbook pro 10.4 and tons of others but am missing the install discs for this computer.
Avid Xpress is used on that mac so I can't update it to 10.5 otherwise Avid stops working.
Does apple have any support/downloads for that system?

No downloads for the Discs, but it's possible that if you call AppleCare with it's Serial# handy, they may have replacement original Discs for a small fee.

  • Calibrating an Intel iMac display using Spyder2PRO

Recently switched from Windoze to a 20" Intel iMac.
With previous monitors, I used the buttons on the monitor to calibrate.
The Spyder software asks what adjustments are available on the iMac, and since it is all in software I can't be sure. Backlight? Brightness? Color sliders? What is there is not apparent in the Mac calibration routine...
    Anybody know?
    Thanks,

The software for the Spyder2PRO asks what adjustments
are available on the iMac monitor, and I can't find
them listed. Specifically, it asks if there are
    adjustments for:
    Gamma
    White Point
    Brightness
    Contrast
    Backlight
    RGB Sliders
    Kelvin Slider
    Kelvin Presets.
Apparently, there are no RGB sliders, as the software
says they need adjusting but I see no way to adjust
    them.

  • Help, reinstall SL on white intel imac

    Hi There,
I recently installed linux mint on a white intel core duo imac, and now I'm unabel to reinstall Snow Leopard.
at the time I installed mint. I didn't really care about the current osx installation, so i wiped it out, and installed mint.  It now seems like my white imac, doesn't think it's an imac.  It won't boot from any osx install dvd's, but will boot from other 3rd party bootloaders.  however, the keyboard doesn't work inside these 3rd party bootloaders, and thus I can't eject the drive, or even switch which os to boot/install.
So I'm kind of in a pickle., and would really appreciate any help.
    Thanks!

  • Question about Intel iMac's and Airport

I'm going to be purchasing an Intel iMac within the next few months and I just want to make sure I have my facts straight about the Airport issues. Is it true that the Airport issues only occur if you're using an Airport base station (do they not occur if you use a third-party base station?). And do you think the issues would affect the speed of my 512k Internet connection? If anyone could post their own experiences, that would be great.

    Hello,
I have been a P.C. user form the beginning of time the VIC 20 to "08088 processor", Windows 1.0 to XP-sp2 and I have made a big change in our life and my family but we are not disappointed but surprised. Make the big step Apple is on the right track and going to be the top. As for your question don't worry.
    My opinion
About your issues, if your are on DSL there are many issues. IMac is not the your problem it would be your provider. For airport no problem, third-party I would choose linksys. My choice for connection is Cable high speed..

  • Can I transfer all my old os 9 fonts to my new intel imac? And if so, how?

Thanks in advance to all who can and will answer this question.
Needless to say I am a total newbie to OSX. Got a intel imac for Christmas (very lucky!!! Nice Santa!!)
Like it states below, I have been using a G4 in os9.2, and I have all these lovely fonts (Adobe and Trutype, etc.) That I am hoping to somehow use. I would hate to think that i have to purchase all new openface versions.
I have extensis fontDoctor 7.3, and rumor has it, it will convert fonts, is this true? And if so, how? And if not, does anyone know if there is an extention or software that will do this. Please Help!!!
Me and my wallet thank you again.
    IMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   was running a older G4 in os9.2

    From the article, I would think that your Postscript fonts should be supported just fine;
Mac OS X delivers industry-leading support for popular font formats:
    • PostScript Type 1 (with double-byte support). Adobe PostScript fonts launched the desktop publishing industry and are used today by publishers, corporations, and government agencies for high-quality output to laser printers, imagesetters, and platesetters. Each PostScript font requires two files, one for the screen and one for use by the printer's RIP (raster image processor). Mac OS X is the only operating system that provides native PostScript Type 1 font support.
    • OpenType. OpenType fonts (extension .otf) can contain 65,000 different glyphs, so type can be set in non-Roman languages such as Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. There are Macintosh- and Windows-specific OpenType formats; Mac OS X supports both.
    • TrueType. TrueType fonts (extension .ttf) are typically used in home and office environments. A single file contains both screen and printer font information. Mac OS X supports both Macintosh- and Windows-specific TrueType formats.
    • Multiple Master. This special type of PostScript font allows variation of one or more font parameters (such as weight) to create a large number of custom styles, also known as instances. Mac OS X can activate already created instances of Multiple Master fonts.
In your case aren't the Bitmap files the screen fonts, so you can wysiwyg the raaster files?
The classic environment still runs on the PowerPC Macs, many of which are also running Mac OS X 4.X. The article was addressed generally to all OS X users.
I have heard of Sheep Shaver to run the Classic OS 9 in emulation, but I gave up OS 9 in late 2001, so I have never needed to explore this option. Some have posted that it didn't work so well.

  • Intel imac, viruses, and dwg's

Hello, I am looking to upgrade my G4 imac to a G5 Isight or intel. My questions are 1)will the intel unit allow viruses to interact when running XP programs in XP operating system? 2)Is anyone using any autocad type programs on a mac OS that would read or convert DWG's. Autocad is the only program that I have running that would need XP(or windows). If I can get away from autocad I can stay with a G5 which seems to be better at the current time for speed and performance. Any info would to helpful. Thanks

    imac g4   Mac OS X (10.3.5)

I haven't found an inexpensive AutoCad alternative for the Mac, at least not one that I liked. Most were expensive, some didn't have features that I use a lot, and one was buggy though it had some nice features I liked. If you just want a viewer, there appear to be some out there (a Google search of osx dwg got me a few links) but I haven't tried them.
I have AutoCad LT 2000 and I run it under Parallels on my Intel iMac with Windows 2000 as the guest system. There is a little bug related to the Acad crosshair and the cursor (often both are there, not just the crosshair) but otherwise it has been working flawlessly for what I do and is very usable, speed-wise. When running it in full-screen mode, it's like I'm using it on a PC. I imagine it would work on a G5 with Microsoft's Virtual PC, though probably too slow to be usable on a day-to-day basis. I also assume that newer and more professional versions of Acad would work with the setup I have, though I can't verify they'd be as speedy.
As a side note, one thing I noticed when checking out emulators was that XP ran much slower than Windows 2000 as a guest operating system. So I stuck with Windows 2000.

  • Intel iMac displays banding in gradients

I'm not sure if this is a problem with the display or just with certain gradients, but here it is. I set my background to a gradient of about 70% gray at top fading into about 20% gray at bottom. Looking at the screen from a normal viewing distance, I can see horizontal lines or banding in the gradient. I searched for possible solutions, including adding a blur or noise to the gradient, but while I was able to improve it, I still see slight banding in the gradient.
It is not really noticeable in gradients that stretch horizontally, but it is quite noticeable the other way around, though sometimes it's more noticeable than others.
Is this a problem with the display or with the way the gradient was created? I tried switching the color profiles from the default iMac profile to a few others, as well as trying to calibrate the display myself using the display preferences, but the banding did not go away, and I'm unable to find any other potential solutions. Is this a normal problem for iMac displays? Or should I be sending this in for repair/replacement?

I reproduced your situation, and noticed a slight banding as well. I am reminded of an article I read that revealed the use of 6-bit displays on certain MacBook models which don't live up to the claim of being able to display "Millions" of colors.
It would upset me to find out that my 24" iMac's display (not the video card) is incapable of displaying all 16 million or so colors it's supposed to.

  • Different Bluetooth on Aluminium imac 10.5.5 vs white intel imac 10.4.10?

I cant seem to connect via bluetooth for file transfers on my new 24" imac, but had no probs with my 17" intel imac, or my 2.16 black book. Both machines are running 10.4.10 & the new aluminum 24" is running 10.5.5

Try using System Profiler (Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info...) to examine the Bluetooth situation on each computer. Click on the Bluetooth item under the Hardware item in the column on the left. That will tell you the Bluetooth software version, enabled state, etc.
