White is no longer!

I have PS CS4 v.11.0 loaded on a Dell Optiplex 755 running Windows XP Pro SP3 with a Dell 1908FP(Digital) on ATI Radeon HD 2400 LCD monitor.
When running any program EXCEPT PS, white appears as white on the screen. When running PS, white appears as a pale shade of ecru in all open files, swatches, and color selection tools. All other colors are also "off" in this same manner.
However, when I use the PS-created files in other applications, white is once again white, but colors (unless I stick with Pantones) are also off.
Please save me from the insane asylum and offer me some advice on how to rectify this situation.
Thanks!
Susan

> So my last question is, if all appears to be fine to my eye, are there any of the above settings you recommend that I change?
That is a simple question that unfortunately can have a less-than-simple answer.
In general, none of THOSE settings is going to have a dramatic impact on how things look to your eye, particularly if you are using your eye on a monitor (as opposed to a print). You are using Adobe RGB as your working RGB space and that is not necessarily a bad choice depending on the types of images your work with, your preferred workflow, and your intended output medium. If you are posting images to the web, just make sure you convert to sRGB for those.
What COULD impact how things look to your eye and how well you get a match between what you see on your display and what you get in a print, is how well your monitor is calibrated and profiled. If you plan on doing serious work, I would recommend getting a calibration/profiling device. These start at the low end with devices like the Huey and go up from there to devices like the Spyder3, Eye One, and so on.
Here is a pretty good document that covers both of the above topics:
http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/WGuidelines.pdf
Color Management, calibration, and profiling can be rather daunting at first but there is a ton of information on the web. Just try drinking it in a little at a time.
> does photoshop cs4 have pop color?
Well, you had me going with that question because I was not familiar with the term. If you mean being able to keep a specific color in an image and turn the rest of the image shades of grey, yes, you can do that in Photoshop. It is not as easy as clicking a "pop color" button and then selecting the part of the image where you want to keep that color but it's pretty easy. Here is one of probably 10 ways to do it:
- Do a Select>Color Range from the PS menu.
- Click on the color you want to keep (not turn to grey).
- You can shift-click to add samples that will add additional tones
- You can adjust the fuzziness to also control the breadth of tones selected.
- You can use the Selection Preview options to see the select portions in different ways.
- Once you have selected what you want, click OK.
- Now on the menu, do Select>Inverse. This will now select what you want to change to greys.
- Now do Image>Adjustments>Desaturate.
That's it. As I said, there are several other ways to do it and you can use adjustment layers instead of direct image adjustments but I gave you one of the quick and dirty methods.
Hope that helps.

  • Lightroom: Why does auto white balance no longer work after changing the camera calibration profile?

I'm using NEF raw files from Nikon.
Lets say for example I import a NEF file into Lightroom (v4) and click on 'auto' for white balance. The white balance in the image is  adjusted correctly (somewhat). However, if I then change the camera profile (in the camera calibration section) from 'adobe standard' to 'camera standard' then the white balance in the image becomes very wrong. I then have to set the white balance back to 'as shot' and correct it manually instead.
Why would 'auto white balance' no longer work just because I change the profile from 'adobe standard' to 'camera standard'?
    Any ideas?

    Works as expected here...

  • IMac (2011) white screen for long time before loading

    Hello everyone,
When i powered on my iMac yesterday I got the white screen (before the white screen with the grey Apple logo) for a very long time (app. 4-5 min.) before loading the white screen with the grey Apple logo and eventually starting up my dekstop.
Also the wireless bluetooth mouse and keyboard kept on searching for connection, unsuccesfully - so I pluggend in a cabled keyboard and mouse.
    So far so good.
I chose to make a clean installation of Mavericks OS X (which was also the current OS X), hoping this would put a end to the long loading time when powering up the computer. However this didn't do any good, and I still get the long loading time with the blank white screen, and no succesfull connection between bluetooth mouse+keyboard and the computer.
Does anyone recognize this issue, and how should I deal with it?
The harddrive is a 1TB SATA, and I never had similar issues with the machine.
The clean install of Mavericks was done after erasing the harddrive, through disc utilities.
I feel very confused about this issue, and can't no longer find any alternative solutions to solve it.
Hoping for your advice and kind help

    True :-)
I pressed D upon startup and was able to launch the disc utility.
Tried to Google for people with the same problem, but didnt get any decent answer.
I am thinking some component must be broken, either the HDD or RAM?

  • White Macbook no longer booting

    Hi there,
My first generation white Macbook (June 2006) isn't booting up since failing to wake from sleep...
I normally shut the lid to sleep it, and this time instead of waking up and doing the normal disc drive noise, it appeared to get stuck... with the disc drive noise repeating and clicking. After a couple of goes it stopped but still didn't wake up so I held power button to switch off.
Now when I press power button, the usual drive noise happens (without sticking), the screen flashes but then returns to black and doesn't do anything else (no chimes, no picture). The light at the front stays on during this time though, so it's almost like it's stuck in sleep mode??
Have tried with and without battery and with and without power adapter. Have tried holding power button for ages - get the rapid flashing lights but still nothing and have tried the SMC reset.
I'm hoping someone here may have some other ideas to try, otherwise a (hopefully not to costly) trip to the Apple store will be in order
    Thanks very much in advance!
    Neil

    Hi everyone...
Thanks for the tips - I was worrying about logic board, but it's had that replaced previously so I was hoping it wasn't that!
Anyway good news is that it seems to be working again - I got in and I think my girlfriend had left it in the front-light on, trying-to-boot-up state so it was warm... but on opening the chimes sounded and it tried to boot.
It then seemed to boot to the password prompt, but before I could finish typing the password it cut out and rebooted.
I then held the power button down to turn off fully, turned it back on, and here I am typing on it!!
It's almost like it got stuck in sleep mode - could it be something up with the Tiger install, or a (very) intermittent hardware fault?
Very keen for it to not happen again!
Thanks for the help again - will keep you posted

  • Mini-DVI to Video Adapter No Longer Compatible

This is an infuriating subject for me. I had a 2007 2.0Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo White Macbook. On a daily basis i used it with my widescreen TV. I am not made of money, so it is an old tube screen that requires a composite connection.
When that macbook decided to not work anymore, even after several repairs, they replaced it with a new 2009 2.0Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo white macbook. Of course, the higher spec that came with this seemed like i should have been grateful. No, I've just been P.O'd ever since. I can no longer use my Macbook to watch movies on my big screen as the DVI adaptor which i paid a completely stupid amount of money for no longer works. I'm sure this problem could be fixed with some kind of a patch for the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M it comes with. But i guess they have just forgot about the white macbook now. Great.
Does anyone out there know of any way around this problem? Again, i want to connect a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo white MacBook introduced after January 2009 to a composite connection as once used in the Mini-DVI to Video Adaptor. Anyone know of a solution?
I ask again for this to not be deleted like all my other negative posts. It DOES contain a question, which i very much wish to be answered.
    Regards,
    Steve.

I dont think you understand. Yes, it does use the same connections - it all connects up properly. But after 2009 the white macbooks no longer recognize the TV-Out when you connect the mini-DVI to Video adaptor.
On my old 2007 white intel macbook that had the old graphics card, i was able to connect it all up then go into display preferences and it allowed me to set up the screens as i wanted (ie mirrored, side by side etc). Now, under displays settings, that is no where to be seen.
Its a nothing to do with anyhting being wrong, its just known that Apple discontinued support for it. Even on the apple store website here, you will see in small print under the adapter that it is not supported on white macbooks from 2009 January onwards.
I want to know is there any other solutions.

  • Quartz Compositions no longer working in Keynote

Anyone having any luck inserting movies exported from Quartz Composer or raw .qtz files?
We use a lot of that for backgrounds and effects, and in Keynote 5.0 all we get is a solid white rectangle instead of all that coolness.

    OK. Just discovered something interesting.
Short version: If I set my MacBook Pro's graphics performance to "slower but more power efficient", the imported Quartz Composer clips suddenly works. If I set it to "faster but battery draining" I get the white rectangle.
Long version: I got a new MacBook Pro, with a later version of QuickTime installed (7.5.7) than the dowloadable one. This version, I guess, has support for the special switchable graphic processors in the current MacBook Pro. It now seems that with this QuickTime version, the slower graphics chip (nVidia GeForce 9400M) can play the .qtz files in Keynote 5, but the faster one (nVidia GeForce 9600M GT) can't.
But this is true only for Keynote 5. My old Keynote 4 plays them happily regardless of graphics setting.
So, to use all the graphics power of my Mac, I guess I'll need a bug fix for either Keynote or QuickTime, or both.

  • NewMacPro 4cor.  Seems to take longer than I expected to boot up.  This normal?

I just got my new MacPro 4 core with 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM. D300 GPUs.
I have noticed that when I start it up i have a white screen for longer than I had expected befor the user login screen appears.
Anyone else seen this?  Running Mavericks 9.2.  I have not loaded the latest security update as I have heard it can be a bit problematic.
How long does your nMacPro take from power on to login screen?

Disconnect all your perhipherals and start looking there for an issue.
Do a SAFE BOOT once, then restart, then do a restart again. What is it now?
Go into Recovery Mode and repair disk at two points, the top raw drive level, and the Mac OS volume partition both.
Do you have Windows Boot Camp or something else on the drive as well?
Longer is not going to help as can be seen. But let's assume longer means some time frame of more than 15 seconds? and you went to control panel to select default partition after insure with Repair Disk and Safe Boot it is in good working order, and nothing is attached affecting booting.
Did it do it on day one? when did it change? what was done in that time?

  • GS70: White Screen at Bootup

    Hello all,
First and foremost, as everyone else has said, I am absolutely in love with the GS70.  that said, I am encountering a very severe problem with the computer.
As the title suggests, the computer won't boot up at all anymore;  The screen simply remains white, even after LONG period of time.  I received the notebook tester day and have since taken to installing some programs:
    Microsoft Office '13
    Team Fortress 2
    StarCraft 2
    WinRar
    Etc
I have not hooked it up to an external display to verify the computer itself is working, but I'm not about to void the warranty if it is simply a graphics issue by exchanging parts myself.  I am led to believe it is more severe.  The keyboard lighting remains a completely different color than that which I chose.
I'm going to RMA the thing, but is there any insight?  Typically, I would do everything I could to repair the machine myself, but if it is under warranty, I would just rather send it in.  Ultimately, I'm just curious to see what everyone else thinks.
    Thanks!

if you can still RMA, RMA it.
The problem description you have given is unclear, however please make sure
    1. Battery is attached
    2. Power supply (charger) is attached to Power network and your laptop.
Anyway that sounds like hardware problem, and you probably have better luck by RMA this.

  • Boot Camp MBP '11, W7 Install = Black Screen

I'm struggling with getting Boot Camp up and running on my new MBP.
Since it is likely relavent: I have installed an OptiBay in my MBP 15 (high end) with a secondary hard drive, with my SuperDrive connected externally via USB.
After creating a boot camp partition, the machine reboots with a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit install disk in the SuperDrive. The disk reads like it's preparing to install, the white screen stays up until the disk stops being read, then the white screen turns to an active black screen as if it is going to display something, but then it just sits at a black screen for ages until I just have to turn it off because it's not going anywhere. I've tried a number of different install disks, all with this same problem.
After an entire night of trying to get the above to work, I decided to remove the OptiBay and put the SuperDrive back in its place and try to install Boot Camp on the primary HDD. In fact after doing this I had even less success, the disk would read and the screen would stay white for a long period of time, and then the Folder w/ Question Mark image would blink on the screen as if it couldn't find what it was looking for to boot up.
I'm at a total loss here, haven't seen anyone else with similar issues and can't for the life of me figure out what is going on here. At first I thought it was my install media, then the drive configurations, and now I just don't know. I suspect drivers but I've also seen other people post they've installed W7 without issue so it's probably not that. Any ideas?

you could Try to disable the wrong graphics card driver:
    Run the Windows installer,
wait, until the black screen appears, then, wait for maybe 15minutes to be safe
shutdown the computer by holding the power key for >10sec.
turn on the computer, press several times F8, as soon as the machine boots, until you get the windows startup menu options.
    choose safe boot
Now windows will start, but there will be a messages that setup cannot continue in safe mode.
    Do not click continue/shutdown.
    press SHIFT-F10
    A command prompt comes up
    enter: compmgmt.msc
then look for the device manager,
    expand the graphics card section,
right click the graphis card, choose "disable"
    close the program
    exit the command prompt
now click on the restart computer button
Computer will restat, setup should continue normaly
Finally install the apple supplied drivers.
    does that help ?

  • Font Smoothing, FileMaker Pro 8 and my new MBP 17

I have a Filemaker database I designed with white text on dark blue background and other dark colors. When OS X first introduced font smoothing the white was no longer solid but kind of disappeared into the background. The white color was uneven. Playing with Tinker Tool (I think) brought it back.
On my previous laptop 17" the white text was always solid and clear and I never messed with Tinker Tool. Maybe it was an OS X update but I didn't have the problem ever on that machine.
Today I got a new MBP 17". There it is again, kind of fuzzy and hard to read. White on black is fine of course. But once again my white text is hard to read. Can anyone explain this or help me get back to the clarity I had? The title line is 18 pt. so it is not a matter of shutting off font smoothing which only allows up to 12. And actually, that changes the black on white without affecting the white on blue. Thank you someone..

Actually, you can see something of what I'm talking about in iTunes. If you move the highlight line down over song names the masking or lightening of text inside the blue highlight color is different than before. Is there a setting I am missing? I have it set for "Best for LCD" which is what I had previously.
Perhaps the video card is doing things differently? Anyone noticing this?

  • Globally delete text from a PDF?

    Hi,
Firstly, my apologies for wading in with a question that may have been asked. The forum search didn't turn it up but I'm not sure I searched with the right terms.
I'm trying to remove all the text from a PDF to leave the vector images behind - that way I can use the images as a test. I don't mind if it's a solution like making all the text white, just as long as it's invisible in the document.
I had thought this would be reasonably straightforward but I've been looking around for about a day now and no luck. I installed the pdfbox library which had an example code snippet to do this, but my abilities ran short.
    Any ideas?
I'm using Acrobat 9 Pro v9.4.6 on Mac OS X 10.7.2 if that helps.
Thanks for reading, and for any help.
    Cheers,
    Matthew.

    George - THANK YOU!
When I pulled up the Profiles in the Preflight dialog, under Create PDF Layers there is a setting for "Put all text objects on a layer". I double-clicked this, gave it an output file name and off it went - lifted out tens of thousands of text objects from a several-hundred page PDF. Took an hour or so - but not too bad after all that searching and hassle. The layer turns off nicely - I presume that will carry over when I print it!
I had no idea that Preflight was capable of this kind of manipulation, but in hindsight it makes sense.
    THANK YOU again.

  • Cell height adjusting in IE and causing problems

    Hello,
Am I able to "lock" the dimensions of cells in a table? Please view the link provided below. I don't want the space between the text links on the left to stretch when content in the white box is longer. I would rather the links stay at the top and the cells at the bottom (with no text) stretch. is there a way for me to achieve this in IE? The dimensions seem to stay put nicely in safari.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am working in GL 7.

Put your links in their own table inside that left-hand cell and set the outer cell's vertical alignment to 'top'.

  • Renaming identical filenames in photos -how?

How do I rename photos with identical names in iPhoto 5?
I'm trying to clean up and organize my photos, so I first held down ALT and COMMAND while starting iPhoto which gave me 4 choices to clean up/rebuild stuff, which I did.
When it was all done several images were added to my library. I'm guessing photos that were otherwise buried/hidden from various crashes/forced exits, so what I'm going to do is drag them to the desktop, then drag the ones that I don't have duplicates of back to the iPhoto albums.
The problem is that I'm not able to drag many of those photos to an empty folder on the desktop because their filenames are identical. How do I fix that?

I found this very strange, so I had to check for myself by creating a brand new library (using "libra") and adding 3 RAW images to it. After quitting iPhoto I investigated the new library's folders and sure enough -there were JPGs to be found! Full-size JPGs and thumbnail JPGs. And within a folder named "Originals" I found the RAW image files.
When I take pictures with my camera I shoot RAW and .JPG simultaneously, which means that when importing my memory card into iPhoto I get both.
By copying the library and removing the JPGs from one and RAWs from the other I figured that I would have split things up, but apparently not as from what you say I have double up with JPGs (one being the actual imported JPGs, the other copy being a converted RAW image representing the RAW image).
But if I delete the RAW images from the library, wouldn't the JPGs representing them also be deleted?
I will take your suggestion of importing my memory card's images to the computer's desktop (preferrably in an empty folder of course) instead of directly into iPhoto, then importing just the JPGs into the "JPG library", and the RAW images into a separate "RAW only" library as I've intended by splitting up the existing library into two.
I haven't used my RAWs much so far, but like to keep them as "lossless digital negatives". If I find an image in my JPG library that I would like to have the RAW equivelant of I'll just take note of the filename/date, switch over to the RAW iPhoto library and find it there.
But back to my problems with duplicated files. I don't think the main problem is that I've imported RAWs (and certainly no problem if the JPGs representing the RAWs are deleted along with the deleted RAWs), but rather "leftovers" from times I've had to force-quit iPhoto while importing or otherwise (I assume that iPhoto keeps images that are imported even if the program crashes afterwards, or forced to quit, but possibly messing up the organizing of things).
I say this because the many of the images that showed up after I rebuilt the library etc. had strange names such as "roll 235 -587", and that's definitely not an original photo's file-name as they all start with "IMG_" (both JPGs and RAW).
Another thing is that when I look through some of the iPhoto folders (from the Finder) there are files with very strange looking names. Generic white icons with long number codes as file-names (e.g. "F49B1A72-6B81-11DB-88BB-00145119B97A-11152-0000005623827527").
Could these be corrupt files that I should throw in the trash, then rebuild my iPhoto library (holding down ALT-COMMAND while starting it), or are those files that iPhoto actually needs all the time?
As far as I could see when using iPhoto itself was that these additional images that showed up after rebuilding were photos that I already had from before, and that these were just re-imported, but I need to be 100% sure before I delete anything, and that means manually inspecting each photo. And that's a hard thing to do if I can't copy them to the desktop etc.
I can't be the first one having this problem...
Regarding memory I have 1.5 Gbytes RAM, and usually don't run many applications at once. Seeing how "unresponsive" iPhoto is I usually quit everything else when I use it.
I don't feel like forking out any more cash on newer versions when I haven't yet pushed what I have to its limits and really need something new.
Apple has a way of adding a few "must have" features to every new version of something to attract users to upgrade. Eyecandy or other small enhancements which really don't make much of a difference.
I'll see how much I can get done with iphoto 5 first.
