White Macbook with MAJOR wifi reception problems

I live in a small flat and used to be able to access Wifi everywhere on my white Macbook (early 2006) model.  This is no longer the case and I can only pick up wifi signal in my living room (i.e. within 7 feet of the router).
It is not a router issue as my iPad, iPhone and even my girlfriend's first generation Ipod Toch can access wifi anywhere in the flat.  Very annoying!  This computer is used by my girlfriend for university and there are only several areas of her college library where she can access wifi.
I took the computer to the Apple Store in Covent Garden and it immeditely showed full bars of wifi coverage throughout the store.  The Genius Bar guy ran some tests and said the antenna was fine.  He showed me how to delete and reinstate the network, which I did to no effect.  I've also moved wifi to the top of the list in Network settings.  Still only works within 7 feet of the router.
Can ANYBODY figue out why my Macbook has suddeny become so bad at picking up wifi?
The Macbook is running Lion, but the problem started when still running Snow Leopard 9and possibly Leoard too).
Any help would be very gratefully received.

You need to go into your router to change the channel it is using. If you check your router manual you will find how to get into its setting. I get into mine by typing 192.168.2.1 into my browser bar. some use routersetup again typed into browser. If you havent got your manaul just go to the company who made it and you can view it there.
Otherwise let me have your router make and model and I will find out how you do it and post here.
Could you see what channels your neighbouring networks were using ?
Also just out of interest I live in the UK and lately my wirelss keeps defaulting to BTopenzone which is clearly on a network nearby, so make sure your system is connecting or trying to connect to your wireless network, not anyone elses.

  • Help with puzzling wifi range problem on Macbook Pro

    Hi There,
I am experiencing wifi range problems with my MacBook Pro (10.9.4).
Our wireless modem (Arris DG860) is located in the office, in the center of our home. The wifi bars register full on my Macbook and the internet works well in office.
When I move my Macbook to the lounge room, 6 steps away, my internet stops working despite wifi bars remaining full. We also have an Apple TV in the lounge room (I have airplay disconnected on Macbook). 15% of the time, I can somehow get the internet to work in the lounge room (sometimes just by disconnecting airplay),then it mysteriously stops- with wifi bars remaining full.
85% of time, the internet doesn't work at all in lounge room (still full wifi bars). Other rooms of the house that are similar distances away from modem experience the same problem. We did not experience this problem with our old Macbook pro (purchased in '09). With our old Mac we had same internet connection, modem and Apple TV.
The only place our current Macbook receives good internet connection is in the office.
We also have an iPad and two iPhone 4S'
    Any suggestions anyone? TIA

Most people who live in neighborhoods or apartments are not blessed with so few WiFi transmitters to contend with. There are no clear channels for most people, even assuming the user knows how to optimize their router, which most people don’t.
I would also explain that I am FCC licensed amateur radio operator K5ZN extra class. I know how radios work and how electromagnetic waves behave. Every diagnostic and symptom tells me there is some incompatibility between my MBPs radio and specifically the Comcast modem-router. In another discussion I gave some technical information about the problem which I spent several day diagnosing while using two different Comcast "Docsis 3" routers.
I have not seen this WiFi problem when using Airport or other standard routers like Linksys or Netgear. The OP didn’t say what router they are using. My suspicions tell me that Apple is moving in the direction of a very sensitive power-saving radio while ISPs are trying to blast the neighborhoods with powerful WiFi. The result is that my poor Macbook can’t get a good signal.

  • New white macbook with Nvidia chipset

    Hi,
I new here, and I have a question. The new white macbook uses GeForce 9400M chipset motherboard. On apple specs, this note uses DDR2-667, but on Nvidia specs, these chipset supports DDR2-800 or DDR3-1066 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/productgeforce_9400m_gus.html)
What apple use 667MHz? If I replace with 2x 2GB DDR2-800, this modification work ?
    Thanks a lot,
    Amauri.

4 Gb 800 Mhz DDR2 Ram works in my Nvidia white macbook. DDR2 800 mhz works in Nvidia White Macbook (Late 2009). I popped the two ram sticks in, Mac OS X booted up fine and about this mac shows 4 gb 800 mhz ddr2 sdram, xbench shows increased bandwidth. This was kind of an iffy upgrade because apple officially says this laptop only supports 667 mhz ram. So if you were on the fence with an nvidia white macbook, go ahead and upgrade to 800 mhz ddr2, it works. Evidently Apple's silent update to the white macbook reveals this slip-up because the new macbook uses 800 mhz DDR2 with the same old memory controller, so nothing changed, they just decided to stick in the 800 mhz variant of ram <-cheap trick. Used el cheapo ram from newegg, <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820159024

  • How many with the wifi (greyed) problem

    Hallo users,
Since I have updated my iphone 3g 16 Gb to the ios 4.2.1 I experienced the well known problem of the WiFi button greyed out
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1559
In details after (almost two weeks) I have updated the operating system i cannot find any longer the WiFi networks around me and then the grey message no Wifi networks appeared in the settings folder. The Wifi address is no longer present (N/A is the field indication) and the battery duration decreases faster than before this problem occurred.
I have tried all of the suggested solutions:
    - Reset the network settings
    - Reset the device
    - Restore the software
    - Restore as a new phone
    - Restore froma back up
    - Recovery mode then restore
    - Downgrade to the IOS 3.1.3
Then i called the Apple Store clsed to my place and the "supervisor" fixed me an appoinment in the Genius Bar where I had to check with the employee if the problem was software-based or hardware-based.
In the Genius bar, the Genius Employee just discussed with me about the several problem an iphone can have without checking at all the device with some diagnostic device as I expected. He just sentenced: "It is an hardware problem".
Since the warranty is expired I was asked to pay 150 euro for a new (refurbished) device 90 days warrantied, same type, same model.
My questione were: How long will last the device that you are proposing? Do you expect I pay once more 150 euro after 90 days if this problem occurr once more?
    No answer.
I left the Genius bar and the Genius without paying anything and with my decive.
Now I'm asking myself and you:
    - Since this problem is well known by Apple, why there is no adeguate support?
    - This problem is caused by the IOS change. Why should I pay for a fault of the IOS developers?
    -  I was told: You have been unlucky. Sorry..
HOW MANY UNLUCKY PEOPLE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH IPHONE 3G, 3GS,4, 4S, IPAD?
    APPLE CANNOT IGNORE US!!

Thanks, this has been driving me crazy on both my MacBook and iPhone. It was dropping my wifi every few seconds! Changed the Authentication Type to WPA2-PSK (AES) and wow! It's been at least 2 entire minutes without dropping!

  • Setting up Macbook with tv wifi

I am considering a Vizio TV with built in WiFi. Can I, nd how do I setup my MacBook to function with this TV feature?
Please be specific. I'm not that savey.
    Thanks

I usually get the driver package off the HP website instead of using what's on the disk packed with the device.
I just bought my MacBook Pro....
If your MBP is truly "new" and not a pre-owned one that's new to you, there is a separate forum for the newer ones (black keys) here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=251
Their hardware is somewhat different than the older MMBP models covered in this forum so, should this be a hardware issue, someone in the other forum is more likely to have current experience with it.

  • Lenovo V 560 major Wifi & Graphics problems!

Hello, i am new here. Last week i bought a Lenovo V 560 Laptop. I have been having problems since then..
The first and biggest problem is the WiFi, i cant get it to work, tried everything and a bunch of drivers. I am no expert but no newbie either. I consider myself a smart dude but i cant beat this!
The system cant find any wifi network and in the system manager i have a yellow dot on the "Network controller" and cant find a driver who works there.
I am running Windows 7 now.
Second problem is that the computer say i have two graphic cards, the Intel HD Graphic and the Invidia M300 graphic card, but the system and the monitor only recognise the VGA Standard screen, and its not possible to switch in Bios...
Anyone good on this stuff here ?
    Thanks in advance

Green light is on but when I go to photo booth or iChat the screen is black?
I can't take pics or video:(

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, klassikgirl
Having tried all the suggestions on the boards, I think you should take it back to the retailer and exchange it for one that works. The problem cannot get better with time, and a same day exchange for a non-functional Mac should be no problem.

  • Satellite M60-164 with Major Hard Drive problems

It started about 3 months ago. Each time the computer started, it would get a certain distance and then the BSOD would turn up and immediately disappear and the computer would restart. Yesterday I discovered the F8 trick to make the BSOD stick around for a while. It turns out the problem was an "Unmountable Boot Volume". I inserted my Windows CD, and ran the repair center thingydingy, and entered chkdsk /r. It said there seemed to be unrecoverable problems on the hard drive.
I bought the computer 2 years ago, and I think I only have a 1 year warranty.
    What are my options?
    Thanks,
    Luke

Looks a little bit like an HDD fault!
Did you try to install the OS again on the HDD?
    Check if this is possible
After the OS installation you could try to run some HDD repair tools like for example the HDD Regenerator.

If this does not help check if the HDD replacement helps you to solve this problem!

  • Moving HD from old white Macbook to new white Macbook

    Hi all
I've hunted around Google but haven't found a conclusive answer to my problem.
I have a previous generation white Macbook. I put in a new hard disk (320g) sometime ago, and all works like a charm.
My wife finally wants to move from a pc to a mac. She is happy to have my current macbook, and for me to get a new white macbook. All good stuff.
So what I want to do is get a new white Macbook with the standard 160g HD because that is more than enough for her needs. All I'd need to do then is swap the HDs around.
BUT as I understand it, my HD's version of Leopard won't have all the drivers for the graphics card in the new white macbooks.
Can anyone help with a simple step by step guide to how I can put my HD into a new white macbook and get it working seamlessly? Is it even possible?
I've read something about swapping HDs and doing an 'archive and install', but I'm not totally clear on what I would be left with at the end of it.
I hope I've been clear. Happy to explain further if not, and would GREATLY appreciate any help.
    Ev2

All the options I can think of, while they could be accomplished with two drives, would be a great deal safer with a third drive used as an intermediate. This can be any external Firewire drive (desktop size is fine), with at least as much space as you have files on your current HD.
First, clone your current system to this third HD using Carbon Copy Cloner. Boot from it and make sure it's complete.
Then, swap the two Macbook drives. The new Macbook will now have the 320GB drive. Boot the new Macbook from its installation disk, run Disk Utility to wipe the drive, and install its system from scratch. When you first boot from this system, it'll ask you if you want to transfer information from a previous Mac. Attach the external HD through Firewire, and transfer your old files back.
Now, you'll need to wipe and reinstall the old Macbook's system on the 160GB drive.

  • Help!, pozor!, White MacBook can't  access home internet

We have 4 MacBooks but only the the oldest one cannot access the internet. We have a cable modem connected to a Time Capsule. The other 3 MacBooks (each is aluminum) connect wirelessly and have no internet problems. Trying ethernet with the white MacBook does not solve the problem. When trying AirPort, signal strength is maximum (4 bars) on the white MacBook. The Network assistant tells me I am connected to our wireless router and the IP address is 10.0.1.7. However Safari will never load a page but after trying for a while shunts me to Network Diagnostics and my attempts flounder with repeated restarts of the modem and router. I'm not sure, but Skype does seem to connect!
The white MacBook is running 10.6.1. It has a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Model identifier is MacBook 1,1. S/N 4H6229D8U9C
    TIA,
    Allan

Please ignore the advice to downgrade your computer to an earlier operating system. That's a ridiculous suggestion.
If I understand correctly, you cannot access the internet on the problem machine via Airport or Ethernet. Is that correct?
You may want to try resetting Safari and trashing the internet preferences. Here's a step-by-step guide to that process:
    http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=4162
I would troubleshoot the problem while directly connected to the cable modem via Ethernet. Once you get it working in that mode, try to get it working on the wireless.
Note that you have not updated the machine to the latest iteration of Snow Leopard (10.6.2). You might want to run Software Update on the problem machine before troubleshooting.
Edit: Doh! You can't run software update when you have no internet connection! That was stupid advice on my part. You can download 10.6.2 onto one of your other machine and transfer it to the problem machine with a flash drive or over the local network.

  • Which version of windows for new 09 white macbook?

    Hi all-
I just bought the new 09- 13" white macbook. My wife needs some really basic MS office stuff- just word and excel- for her work so we're looking at buying some version of windows or office or something. I know with Bootcamp we can use windows, but I only want/need the most stripped down version I can get away with and still have word and excel.
What should I buy? I see Windows XP for under $100. Office for mac is more expensive. Again- just really need word and excel, so any opinions?
    Thanks!
    -Danny

For my 2 cents, Office for Mac is the "pits". Most of the reviews give the program high ratings, but my rant with the program is that the "learning curve" is more than I want deal with. I bought the program and every time I open it up, I have to hunt for menu items that I can find in a flash with the Windows version. The Word program is not as bad as the Excel program (which I find almost unusable). If you're going this route, I would strongly advise checking it out before shelling out cash. The Excel program definitely ***** IF you're transferring files back and forth from Windows.
After my experience, I went with Parallels 4.0 (virtual machine) and loaded Vista Home Premium. It runs fine, but I probably should have gone with XP. I'm running my '03 Office there and it works fine.
If you're willing to take on this learning curve with Windows for Mac, that's probably one of the cheapest ways to go. I think the Home version is around $75.

  • White macbook boots to black screen?

I have a 2006 white macbook with the 2.0ghz core 2 duo processor. It boots well and runs fast most of the time, but sometimes after i press the power button instead of the screen becoming white with the apple logo etc. it just stays black. the fans run and i can hear activity within the laptop but the screen is black.
I usually hold down the power button and try to boot it up again. It works the second time generally, but sometimes I have to do that 3-5 times before it works and boots flawlessly to the desktop.
I have also tried re-seating the LCD cable via ifixit's guide, but it didn't help.
    thanks,

If you are in proximity of an Apple Store with Genius Bar, you could schedule
an appointment or reservation for a genius or specialist to look into the matter.
Depending on your location and global region, this may or may not be free
but is worthwhile to diagnose and test the Mac to discover what is wrong...
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider
    Visit an Apple Retail Store
In several locations, the above may vary; in the US and Canada, [among other
regions, some Apple Stores may not] offer a diagnostic as a free service...
So depending on where you are you could check into this; the diagnostic test
and Genius bar is free even with an older Mac out of warranty in US/Canada.
If there is no Apple Store with Genius bar, you can check into seeing an AASP
or Authorized Apple Service Provider, where customary charges may apply.
These AASP locations may be able to repair older Macs the Apple Store is
unlikely to; so if you have vintage or obsolete gear, that's another matter out
side of the Genius. Specialist Independent repair services can also help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • 2006 White Macbook Issues?

I have a late 2006 white macbook with a 2.0 ghz core 2 duo (Lion), and I also have a mid 2006 white macbook with a 1.83ghz core duo processor (Snow Leopard). I recently bought a 3rd party battery for the late 06 version. The battery had good reviews but once I installed it into the macbook the battery indicator icon said "service battery" and battery life went rapidly downwards. Out of curiosity I put the defective battery in the 1.83ghz macbook and everything appeared fine. I got 4.5-5 hrs of battery life with no "service battery" message. What could be causing that?
Also The 2.0ghz one has been having heat issues since I bought it (~1.5 months ago). Not overheating issues, just very loud fans and a very warm case. I don't do very intensive things on either laptop either. Just a single tab of web browsing. The 1.83ghz Macbook runs whisper quiet and is considerably cooler on the outer case. I cleaned both of dust recently and I re-applied thermal paste on both also. Could the 2 issues be correlated somehow? How can i fix them?
    Thanks,
    camtechguy98

Well first try what Mike suggests:
"Try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)"
If that doesn't work refer to my post about cleaning the fans above your post. Any decent service tech will be able to do that.
    Apple store for sure.
This article addresses most of the issues I've seen:
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/120177/macbook-fans-are-running-high-ev en-under-normal-load
"get the fan serviced before I decide to ditch it."
Oh no! Please don't ditch it. I repair Macs and donate them. If it comes to that email me first.

  • Problem with saving from white Macbook to Iomega external hard drive

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before but i cannot find any thread, so i apologise in advance!
I recently have bought a white macbook, but i have a Iomega external hard drive 250GB (which is not full and nowhere near full)I able to move songs and photos over to iTunes and save on my iPhone okay with no problem. The problem arises when i want to do it the other way, I basically want to save documents, songs and pictures on my macbook over to the external hard drive.
The icon for the external hard drive appears and everything works. I was suggested to use iTunes > preference > advanced and change the location to my hard drive. I have tried this and all it does it make an additional copy on iTunes not on the hard drive.
I would be grateful if someone could please help me as i do not have a clue!
    Thanks
    Gemma

My guess is that the external drive is formatted for windows (NTFS) and for the Mac it would be read only. You can't write to the disk unless you use a third party application like [NTFS-3G|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24481/ntfs-3g].
If you're only going to use the drive with your Mac, I suggest reformmating it for Mac (Mac Extended (Journaled)) using Disk Utility. This process will erase the drive so if there's any more stuff that you need, reclaim that first.
