White Noise / Popping Problems

Hi,
This question is more about microphone equipment than GB2.
I have a Sure SM58 microphone -- am going to be recording an audiobook. I need to get some sort of pop screen (to help keep the "P's" fromm sounding so puffy) ... do I need to buy a proper "pop screen" or can I just get one of those wind screens that cover the mic head (cheaper) ?
Also, my G5 makes quite a bit of noise -- I think part of it is contributing to the background "white noise" of my recordings ... I have read that a windscreen sometimes help.
Should I get both a windscreen and a pop screen? And: any other suggestions on how to reduce the "white noise" (without building a seperate room for my mics)?
Thanks,
Damon

I couldn't underscore enough how important a defuser (pop screen) is. If money is tight, a very cheap thing to try is pulling a pair of pantyhose or stockings over a coathanger.
As for the white noise, a wind screen isn't likely to help (if it did, it would be cutting off all the high frequencies of everything).
The first thing to try is to get the mic as far away from the machine as possible, keep the gain on the mic as low as you can, and stay close to the mic (again the defuser is rather important for this)
One other thing you might try is looking in your Energy Saver preferences and try setting the speed of your processor to "reduced", this may bring the fan noises down quite a bit, and once you've recorded your part you can reset the preference to Highest or Automatic)
Hope that helps --HangTime [Will Compute for Food] B-)>

    Hello Stacey,
What all devices do you have connected?
It sounds like a Ground loop... voltage leaking somewhere.

  • Severe random white noise problem...who to contact?

i primarily use logic with the vienna symphonic library software and generally things have been great...however.
occasionally when selecting notes in the piano roll severe blasts of maximum volume usually painful white noise will shoot out of the speakers.
this is quite unsettling for many reasons.
i've noticed some threads around the web about this (for example http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2144002&tstart=30 ) and i would like to do whatever i can to help apple fix this.
for me it's pretty specific as it has only happens when editing in the piano roll in a track that has a vsl instrument loaded into it and i click and drag to select multiple midi notes. perhaps it's a vsl issue but the thread i mentioned above suggests there's an apple issue. i'll post this on the vsl forum too.
what's more disturbing is it's happening more frequently but i haven't changed anything in my setup that seems remotely related to this except upgrade to 10.6.3 today which didn't help.
i'm using logic 8.02, snow leopard 10.6.3 on a macpro 2.66 quadcore with 8bg of ram.
so if anyone has any insight on how to fix this it would be wonderful or if someone knows of an address i can send my circumstance to that may help apple fix it that would be great too.

  • MBP 17" report, occasional white noise from right speaker

My 2.16Ghz MBP with 100GB 7200rpm drive and 1GB memory arrived a few days ago. Since then I have been installing software, running apps, and generally putting it through it's paces. I have also added a 1GB stick from Crucial. On the whole the MBP has been great, except for a few (hopefully minor) problems:
    1. It gets quite warm on the left palmrest, and gets uncomfortably hot between the keyboard and the screen. This is just during casual use, web surfing, downloading updates etc. The case temperature is about the same as my old 667MHz TiBook after it had been at 100% CPU for several hours (encoding video). I dread to think how hot the MBP will get doing something demanding.
    2. When closed the screen appears to be slightly bent, the gap at the two front corners is about 1mm wider than the gap at the latches.
    3. I have started to get hard crashes during the boot up sequence. Specifically after the grey apple I get the greyed-out multi-language reboot message and have to reboot. If I continue trying to reboot it eventually manages to get past the grey apple and boot up normally (usually this takes 2 or 3 attempts). I suspect this is due to something I've installed, possibly some Canon software for my MP750 printer.
    4. I have now heard a white noise/static sound coming from the right speaker on 5 occasions. Three of those occasions were while booting (one of them was when I first turned the MBP on! Not a good sign). The computer boots normally, but with this strange noise! The other two times where when I was launching apps. On each occasion the noise lasted about 3-5 seconds before stopping. It's more of a hissing noise, not a mooing or a whining noise. It sounds exactly like the speakers on a vinyl record player when the needle is in between songs.
Obviously all of the issue are annoying. However I'm only REALLY concerned about item 4. Item 1 was kind of expected after doing some pre-purchase research. Item 2 is annoying in a £1800 laptop, but I can reluctantly live with it. Item 3 is frustrating but I'm sure I can 'cure' it by removing software (it only started happening after a day or two of fairly heavy use). Item 4, on the other hand, is intolerable
Anyone have any suggestions? Advice appreciated. The nearest Apple store is about an hour away, so advice other than "take it to a Mac 'genius'" would be appreciated.
    17" MacBook Pro 2.16GHz Mac OS X (10.4.6) 2GB RAM

Well, that was 15 minutes of life wasted typing out the above post that I'll never get back
I was hoping for some sort of 'expert' advice from all the users here with thousands of posts. Evidently not.
Anyway ... I have (kind of) fixed the problem myself. Resetting the power management unit almost completely solves the static noise problem. I say almost, because since resetting the PMU (about 2 weeks ago now) I have heard the static noise ONCE. This is compared to hearing it around 3 or 4 times a day prior to the PMU reset.
This at least makes me slightly more confident that this is a software/firmware glitch, rather than a hardware fault.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • How do I get rid of the white noise that plays over my music?

    Hey.
I got 5 CDs today and I wanted to upload them onto my iTunes to put on my iPod. But when I put in 4 of the CDs I got white noise over the top of the music making it unlistenable. But the 5th album(Double CD) worked perfectly fine. I know the problem isn't the CDs because I played them through my PS3 and they were absolutly fine. If anyone can help. Its greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    - DowellG8

Go to Edit > Preferences > General > Import Settings and check the box for error correction, and then try one of the problem CDs again.

  • White Noise showing up in images after PDF Creation

I am currently running into an issue making PDFs from InDesign CS4. Lately, our company has been getting some rather large jobs in to print and that's when this all started.
The current job is 190 pages plus cover that will be perfect bound. The client, nor I can make one large PDF from this job so we have to break it up into sections. Usually each of the PDF sections has around 20-50 pages per.
Now the issue we're running into is that on some of the pages, an image will end up with a bar or lines in it that looks like white noise. Like the image information was lost for a short period of time during the PDF creation from InDesign.
Here are two pictures of pages from separate jobs and a close up on what's going on. **Second image was from a 32 page plus cover document we have already printed.
Now in order for me to fix this issue is to just make a single page PDF of the effected pages in the document. I just wish I knew what was causing this issue so I know how to avoid it in the future. So far four jobs have been affected like this; two 32 page + cover jobs, a 64 page + cover job, and is job.
We use a Rampage Workflow system here. My PDF settings in InDesign CS4 has all compression turned off, no profiles or color conversion turned on. I keep compression turned off because it seems sometimes, vector art done in Illustrator does not seem to come out looking well when RIP'd in Rampage.
My main computer is a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 4 BG of memory running Mac OS X 10.5.8.
My current version of InDesign CS4 is 6.0.3.  If anyone has run into this problem or if anyone has any helpful hints for me, I could really use them please. If you need more information from me, I'll be happy to answer any questions.
    Thanks for all the help!
    Roc

That one has come up every now and then and has always been hardware as far as I know....  bad ram, bad cable, bad drive, bad network maybe even bad video card (?).
I see that the lines in the rotated pic are parallel with that pic, so maybe look at the machine where that pic was made and placed first, this is not definite, but you can get corruption in tiffs on machines with hardware errors and they may not be visible every time you open the file.
Although probably a bigger clue is the fact that doing singles is working better, that would make me change the ram completely, suspecting a bad module.  Also, unplug peripheral devices and see if that has any bearing.

  • Why is the video audio white noise when I share my project since I updated to 10.0.9

On the movies I created before I updated to 10.0.9, the audio prortion of the video is now white noise. The audio is fine when played back in FCP, but when i share the project it is white noise. When I burn it to BluRay the audio is gone all together. Even when I make a master file to my desktop, it still happens. The music I added to my project is fine. It just the audio that is part of the video clips that is affected. I've turned off the EQ's and Compressors I was using and I even tried moving the audio to the center channel instead of mono. No luck. Need some help. I can't figure this out.

I'm encountering the same problem as the original poster.  In my case, I'm using FCP 10.1 (running on OS 10.9.1).  My source file is DV video imported via FireWire from a DV camcorder.  The clip's audio is fine when playing inside of Final Cut Pro 10.1, but when I share the project the audio track is just white noise.  My share settings are to Apple 720p devices (the subseqent dialog boxes indicate the software has figured out it's really 640x480 video).
Here's what the QuickTime Inspector says about the source file:
    Format:
    DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720 x 480 (640 x 480)
Linear PCM, 16-bit little-endian signed integer, 48004.6 Hz, Mono
Linear PCM, 16-bit little-endian signed integer, 48004.6 Hz, Mono
    FPS:  29.97
    Data Size:  5.87 GB
    Data Rate:  30.30 Mbit/s
    Current Size:  640-480 (actual)
I tried changing from "faster encode" to "better quality", but it made no difference.
The rather dated version of Compressor I have (v3.5.3) was able to encode the clip to H.264 640x480 and the results are fine.  However, it took way longer than FCP 10.1 (I think it's too old to be taking advantage of the GPU).

  • New 21 inch iMac with mic white noise

Internal mic creates white noise when speaking on Face Time, Skype, or iChat.  It is resolved if I plug in my iPhone headphones.  I tried a PRAM reset and moving the computer location in case there was a problem with grounding, but to no avail.
Any suggestions or is it just a bad mic?  I ordered the computer day 1 it was released this last month, maybe that was the problem.

Go to /Applications/Utilities and run Audio MIDI Setup. Toggle outputs and then try again.
If still no joy, tote that new bad boy into the nearest Apple Store and have them offer and opinion - if that's not an option, get on the phone to Apple...let them FT w/you and see what they think.
    Good luck in any case.

  • IPhone 4 crackling and grainy white noise!!??

I have recently had my iPhone 4 replaced because of terrible noise interference during calls to the point where the sound totally went off....I have had my new iPhone 4 for 3 weeks, last week it started to make funny noises! Really loud crackling during some calls (not all)...it made me go slightly deaf! Like firecrackers! Occasionally it makes those radiowave interference noises too, and now it has started to just randomly produce grainy white noise when it is just sat next to me. My alarm went off this morning followed by a fuzzy noise each time it did....is this just my phone or is it a common problem? Should I get a replacement or will this keep happening? I feel like it is melting my brain

Did you have any success fixing this?
So I am dealing with the exact same crackling issue on my iphone 4.  I've been to the genius bar 3 times and they are stumped, they can't figure it out, they've gone up the chain and no one gets why it's doing it.  They asked me if I have a metal plate in my head.  I've been to ATT to get the SIM card replaced but the problem still persists.  So of course they quickly sent me back to Apple saying it's their problem.  I have another appointment tomorrow.  The only thing I can think of that's different is I got one of the ATT Microcells for my apartment to help boost the signal but this is really grasping at straws.

  • Getting random white noise in Premier Pro CS3 audio

I'm working with Premier Pro CS3 on a simple 15 minute slide show with approx. 150 pictures and 3 songs in WAV format. In each of the three songs, I'm getting 1-second bursts of white noise - on left or right or both channels - approx. 3-4 times in each song.  When played outside of Premier Pro, all songs are clean with no white noise.  None of the songs are too 'hot'; show three have good levels in Soundbooth. I've scanned all of the audio sections in Help and can find nothing that might explain the cause and I'd appreciate some guidance.  I've worked with previous versions of Premier Pro for years and have never run into this.  Thanks.

Have you updated your Creative driver? That would be one of the first things that I would do.
Next, in Soundbooth, do you see the noise in the Waveform? In PrPro, when you zoom in both vertically and horizontally on the Audio Track, do you see it in the Waveform?
Some folk have had great luck using ASIO4ALL as their ASIO driver. It has cleared up many issues with a broad range of equipment. I do not recall your exact problem, but then I might have missed that one. Note: after you download and install ASIO4ALL, you'll need to go to Audio Hardware and set it as your Input and Output. This driver has been very helpful on the Audition forum, and with all sorts of issues and some very esoteric hardware.
Hope that something helps, and good luck,

  • TV white noise after starting from standby

    Hi,
Recently I have installed ShowShifter. It's a great program and very stable. Everything works as it should from excellent TV picture and sound, recording, showshifting, playback, etc  . Except one thing is not working correctly: the recording from standby  .
When I schedule a recording and put the machine into standby it will start the recording as planned. When I then later play the recording the picture is ok, but there is a lot of white noise. Also when I select TV I get white noise. After a restart the TV programs are ok, but the recording has still the white noise.
I did some testing and found out that when you go into standby and come back that always the white noise is present in the TV programs.
The following drivers are installed: 4.31 NVidia Audio drivers and the latest beta TV Tuner drivers.
Does anyone has the same problem? Did you find a solution?

Sorry, I think I wasn't clear in this respect  . Yes, white noise in sound.
I have found out that the MSI MS-8606 Video Capture Driver 4.102.11 from 15042004 (the new beta driver) is the one that is not working correctly. When you disable it and then enable it again then the white noise IN SOUND is gone and the tv sound is back.
I have reinstalled the older driver from 082003. That one doesn't has the 'standby' problem, but gives me a grappy picture  . So that's a no go.
What could happen to this beta driver during 'standby' after using ShowShifter that it is not working correct anymore  ?
    Regards,
    Rene

  • Why do I get sometimes my macbook to do white noise out of the blue

Why do I get sometimes my macbook to do white noise out of the blue? It's a new mac so is it faulty?

Never heard of that problem - seems as if something may be affecting your speakers, somehow.
If you're still under warranty, you should take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them check it out. Even if you're not still under warranty, the diagnosis and estimate for repair will be free.
    Good luck,

  • Spectrasonics - White Noise, No Audio, and Audio/Midi Sync Sample issues

Just installed all of the spectrasonics software. Omnisphere, Trilogy, RMX, Atmosphere. Im getting very mixed results.
The patch plays, sometimes there's clicks. Then it goes to white noise. Then there's no output.
    Thoughts? Thanks

I hear your point re Spectrasonics. Generally when you call a software specific provider, they tell you that they do not provide support for 3rd party software - e.g. Logic etc. Im not sure the troubleshooting is on the Spectrasonics side. Actually, all of them have worked succesfully at various points. Further, the white noise now comes and goes with EXS 24, Battery and others. So, it does not appear to be a problem that is specific only to Spectrasonics.
I use an Apogee Duet. I have tried different buffer settings (256 and 512) and that seems to help with certain apps. E.g. Kontakt appears to work better with less latency at 256. Spectrasonics, when it works appears to work better on 512.
    Thanks

  • Media Encoder turns audio into white noise!

I'm running CS5.5 on an intel Mac 10.6.5, and i have been having problems encoding to flv.
All my videos are edited the same way, and using the same formats etc,   yet recently I have found that when converting to .flv, some will work fine, and others will have the audio replaced by white noise.
I cannot figure out what the problem could be. I have also tried using the CS5 version and that is having the same issues.
Checking through the video specs, it appears that the one difference is that the ones which worked fine are all Apple ProRes 422 HQ files, and the ones which failed are Apple 10bit Uncompressed.  The strange thing is the audio is the same for both.  Yet when the encode problem happens, the video for both is fine, its just the audio where the problem appears.
Anyone else seen this problem?  or better still have a solution?
    adam

    I've answered it myself.
The problem relates to using Uncompressed 10bit movie files...seems the CS5 versions have a problem handling the audio on these. The solution for me was to run the files through Compressor first and change them to Apple ProRes422, before running them through AME.
    works every time now!
now if only i could find the bug report form....

Just to confirm, you have -not- installed the CoreAudio standalone driver -and- the one that installs with ProTools? This can certainly cause problems.
