White on black display

I saw the "white on black" display option in the Universal Access menu under system preferences and I really just liked the way it looked. Is it possible to turn this function on for menus only. Pictures and videos don't look so good with it.

One very COOL feature on iPhone 4S that I just discovered, is the (White on Black) display mode, which is so cool and atrictive. When you go to that mode, every picture on the iPhone, facebook, icons and every other applications that displays a picture are effected, native or installed Apps. that displays a picture goes in to negative view, if you want to view your pictures, you have to go back to the default setting, very disappointing.
This is a very cool feature and Apple needs to find a way that all photos are immune and preserved from the conversion when a user switches to that mode.
Love to hear your comments and suggestions and I'm sure that Apple developers can come up with a solution to fix the glitch.

Hmmmm, http://www.seattlepi.com/ loads fine hear in 10.4.11, FF 3.6.8, but I do see it uses some kind of Flash.
The last really supported Flash for PPC was 10.1.102.64, but if it's for like Facebook or such, people have been fooling FB to think they have a leter version installed.

(If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, contributor Texas Mac Man suggests the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the latest version:)

Display: White on black without inverted pictures?

I have changed my display to white on black as I find it a lot easier to read webpages and word documents. Only all of the pictures are inverted too. I only want the background and text inverted without it affecting pictures on the web, my wallpaper background or my icon bar at the bottom of the screen. Is this possible?

By 'background' you mean the desktop picture? Find it in (hard disk)>Library>Desktop Pictures and use an image editor to invert it, save the result and choose it as your picture. Of course icons etc. will still come out negative.

I bought a macbook pro retina ME665 in Dubai, and 3 month later its display stopped working properly.some white lines appeared on it and display itself became white and black. Can anybody suggest what should I do to fix this problem?

When I came back i found that the dispaly of my laptop became white and black, some lines appeared on it. Everybody in my family told me that no one has dropped my laptop or done anything that can cause this problem. there is no any service provider of apple in my country. WIl, the international warranty cover this case? I bought this laptop not from apple store,but in a simple store and I lost reciept.

Accessibility feature not working - using white on black contrasting colors

There is an accessibility feature that allows a pdf file to be viewed in other than the default black on white background. The choices are white or yellow or green text on a black background. This last worked for me with reader v7 ... neither version 8 or the newest version 9.3.0 works correctly ... when white on black is selected the file is still displayed in the default black on white format. Does anyone know if there is an Adobe product manager who would be able to confirm this problem ... or perhaps have a workaround for it?

The replace colors feature in Reader only changes the color of the primary page background, so if the author added a background to the document (even if the added background is white) then this might cause the issue you describe. One thing that may help is if you enable reflow mode, as this forces extra backgrounds to disappear. You can try this by locating the option in the view menu or by hitting Ctrl+4.

Type Messages and Objects turned from white to black in PDF

When I exported my Keynote presentation to a PDF the Type Messages and Objects turned from white to black. The display in ”Preview” is ok but in Acrobat PDF Viewer it looks black instead of white. Only happens on some slides. I could not find a reason why this happened. Seemed kind of random to me when it happened. But the error was reproducable unless I rebuild it with new silides.

Can you get the exact wording for that error? Is it can't mount iPod?

Swaping between white-on-black and black-on-white

I really like using the white-on-black setting in Universal Access, however if I want to watch a video or see a picture normally I have to switch back to black-on-white. Is there a way where I could quickly switch back and forth between the two settings without having to reopen system preferences and select which setting I want? I've seen that you can create scripts or use terminal to switch system preference settings, but I don't have very much experience with either of these.
It would be great if someone could hep me out with this. Thanks.

I have a situation where the PowerBook display and the 17" external Studio Display are inversely correlated.
(eg. one is black on white and the other is white on black). Using the Universal Access keyboard shortcut of control/option/command/8 just toggles them back n forth switching the settings between displays.
How do I change just ONE of the displays so that they both have the same settings???
I've tried all permeations of UA settings, disconnect external display, detect displays with display disconnected, re-boot again, and no avail.

Electrical noise when a white background is displayed on the screen

My iMac 27 mid-2010 got the LCD and graphics card replaced recently, due to the infamous dark spots on the display and some other video problems (vertical dotted lines on the screen).
Those issues are fixed, but now I have a new problem that didn't exist before the repair:
There is an annoying high-pitched electrical noise, but only when a white background is displayed on the screen. For example: When I open a blank page in Safari, the noise comes up. If I switch to another tab with a black background web page, the noise disappears.
The noise is perfectly noticeable, and very annoying, when using the computer in a silent room. It is not related to display brightness, since it's always there no matter what brightness level I set.
The Genius in the local Apple Store was able to hear it, so it's not a problem of perception. But he could neither find the cause nor solve the issue, so he returned the computer to me, with a vague 'its a normal noise, maybe caused by the CPU or the graphics card when they have to display white backgrounds'.
Well, the thing is, this noise wasn't there before the LCD/graphics card replacement. I'm pretty sure about it, since I have been using this computer in a daily basis for the past two years and I know each and every noise that comes out of it.
I would like to ask if any of you know of this problem. I've done a lot of searching in the internet, but couldn't find anything about this noise in particular.

Hi, thanks for your suggestion.
Unfortunately, they have made up their mind about this issue. I even talked to the Store Manager, asking for a solution, but he pretty much ignored me saying he had full confidence in his team: if the genius says the noise is 'normal', then there's nothing more to discuss. Full stop.
They just replaced a fan, which didn't solve anything, because the noise is clearly electrical in nature, NOT mechanical. I suspect it's related to capacitor resonance in the graphics card. The display and LED backlight panel seem to be OK, since the noise is not heard when I use the mac in target display mode via the mini-displayport input.
I gave them this information in order to help with the diagnosis, but they didn't even bother to write it down.
So far, the Apple Technical service seems very un-professional to me. I'm stuck with a defective computer for which I've paid 2.000 euros + Apple Care.
Well, in this case, Apple doesn't Care at all. I can't even find an email address where I can submit a written formal complain.

NO help. They would not or could not assist me in diagnosing the issue . they were wanting me to send it in for diagnosis >$200. The forum shows many laptop experience this issue. I needed help to diagnosis the failure a common one in the forum NO display but turns on, no hdd. light only ac indicator power indicator and charge indicator. neither cap.lock nor number lock leds will toggle.
Just needed to know if processor, video processor or main mother bd.
I get same symptom with hdd. disconnected . I get same symptom with ram removed and with just the primary in , I also swapped rams into the primary receptacle one at a time with same symptoms also tried external monitor with no signal From the computer stepped Fn F5 & Fn F1. could not price a mother board .nether . Basically, I'd say technical help was no help!

No, sorry, there isn't.
The White on Black switch works only on the whole display.
If you really don't want to see most colours inverted, try VisioVoice, which enables you to display selected text in a floating window. The text sizes, fonts and colours in this window can be set to suit your vision best, e.g. white text on black or yellow text on midnight blue, while leaving the rest of the screen unchanged.

I was trying to set a preferences and don't know how/where I changed to white on black but this also screwed up my screen display. All pix now appear as if negatives.

Go under settings, general, accessibility. In some iOS it's called 'invert colors' in others I think it's called white over black or something like that.

Cursor disappears in Word 2004/2008 with white on black text

When I turn on white text on black background, and open a document in Word 2004 or 2008 (or text entry field, in, e.g., Firefox**), when the pointer changes from an arrow to an "I-bar" shape, it disappears. If I toggle back to black text on white background, poof -- there it is. I talked to Apple support and they were able to reproduce the problem, but said it's with Word. I talked to Microsoft support, and they said it's an Apple problem. I don't care; I just need a way to fix it, because using Word is difficult w/o a pointer, and I need to use Word. Anyone have any ideas? I do NOT see a problem with, e.g., Mail.app, where the cursoer also changes to an I-bar at times, but remains visible even in high contrast mode. Note also that this probem does not occur using Word for Windows using Windows high contrast mode (which, however, really is primative compared to OS X's mode).
**Re Firefox example: I'm filling out this form right now, and although the insertion point is visible (the vertical bar where text is entered), the pointer (the arrow that changes to an I-bar when it's inside this text-entry box) is not. All I need to do to make it visible -- as in Word -- is hit Ctrl-Cmd-Opt-8 to toggle the text to black on white, and there it is.

1. White on blue is a partial solution. It's actually still a little glarey for me (I have an eye problem), and, of course, when I switch from Word to another program, I have to toggle back into white on black for the other program, so I can see it.
2. I thought of Pages, too. It works fine, except that I need to exchage documents with PC users, who use Word. For some reason Pages displays line and page breaks in different places than does Word, which is a problem when moving docs back and forth. (Apple support told me that Pages renders fonts and line spacing differently from Word, and there's no way to make text look the same in both programs.) Thats a deal-killer, because the folks I work with and I need to see page layouts exactly the same. TextEdit doesn't have the features I need.
3. As to other programs: It also happens all other Office apps, in Mozilla Thunderbird, and with Palm Desktop for the Mac. It does NOT occur, oddly, in NeoOffice. I initially thought that the re-write of Word from 2004 to Universal Binary in 2008 would fix the problem, but it didn't. Maybe other folks who are listening (reading) in can try it on some third party programs. I don't have or use anything else that I can think of.

Only white screen is displayed at boot

I have a problem with booting up my system. When I press ON/OFF button, the system starts to boot up, screen stays blank for couple of seconds and then the white screen with Lenovo, Intel and Phoenix name is displayed. As the screen stays white, I can't press any buttons, even the Lenovo Care. For half a second I can see in the bottom of the screen the text "press Lenovo care to access system rescue and recovery" (I remember something like this was displayed when my system was ok) but as the text disappears as quickly as it appeared, theres no reaction to the pressing of Lenovo Care button.
I can't even access bios anymore. I have tried allmost all Fx-Fxx combinations and nothing works.
I had installed all the lenovo and vista updates few days before my notebook started giving me problems. I remember that I also updated bios, but this was at least a week before the problems started.
It's also strange that I don't even get any error messages or beeps. It seems like the bios is corrupted. Also the bootable cd won't boot up the notebook.
The notebook is under month old.
Any advice will be appreciated,

I have had exactly the same issue and now managed to resolve it after 3 weeks.
As a stop gap I managed to get the system to boot by pressing Esc as soon as the White Lenovo screen displayed - there is only a small window of opportunity time to do this otherwise it wont work. Then the black diagnostic screen displays. As soon as you see this press F1 and this will take you into the BIOS set up. If you dont press F1 early enough this will not work and the screen hangs after "mouse initialized" is displayed.
In the BIOS setup use the arrow keys to tab along the headers to "Exit". In the exit screen arrow down to "Exit discarding changes" and press enter. The screen should now go black and the flashing cursor will display - ensure that you do not have any media in the drive or USB's connected. The cursor should now disappear and the system will boot up as normal. This will not solve the problem but will enable you to use your laptop.
In order to resolve you will need advice shown on the following link, also shown elsewhere on this forum.

The first post in the thread has an attachment which you will need to download. If like me you are not entirely computer literate, then the instructions in the first post are not entirely clear but if you read to the bottom of the thread, there is a post which is in clear English from a contributor named Russell Bauridel which you should follow. In the instructions it says press the Wiindows button and B whilst this should be fn and B.
On the first attempt I wasn't successful so i decided to downgrade the BIOS back to the original on my system Version 3.10 63af06us found on the following Lenovo page.

In Vista in order to flash the BIOS you will need to run the program as administrator by right clicking the mouse otherwise it will not allow you to do it.
Once I had flashed the old BIOS and replaced the .wph file (found in c: DRIVERS/win/flash63af06us/Realtek) as per Russell Bauridiel, I tried again. Once the process had completed and the laptop shutdown, it didn't automatically restart but once I turned it back on - fantastic - it booted as if there hadn't been a problem!

You can use the NoSquint extension to set font sizes (text/page zoom) and text colors on web pages.
