  • When I turn on my macbook pro, the white screen displays a file with a question mark in the middle. What does this mean?

Suddenly, my macbook pro has experienced problems. When I turn on my computer, the white screen displays a flashing file folder icon with a quesrion mark in the middle. Has my hard drive burnt out? Thank you in advance for any helpful suggestions..

It means your computer is search for a start up volume.  You need to reboot into recovery mode and attempt to repair your disk.  To do this restart the computer and hold the keys:
    <command> + r
    Then open Disk utility.

    That's hard to say.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • DVI to Video adapter | Black and white TV display.

    - -
    Hi,
I just pruchased a DVI to Video adapter and unfortunately, it doesn't work (the display on my TV is black and white).
    I use a S-Video cable.
I tried restarting and using other displays.
    Thanks,
    Chris.

    Anyone else has an idea?
The subject has been discussed here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2136106&start=60&tstart=0 and apparently the problem is fixed with OS 10.6.3.
    But I'm using 10.5.8! Thanks.

  • Black and white TV display.

I just purchased a Mini-DVI to Video converter for my macbook to make my TV my new monitor (screen accidents suck) and now I've got a Radio Shack GoldSeries S-Video cable running to my Samsung tv. The resolution is fine and everything works great except for the TV showing up in black and white. I've called AppleCare and they're not sure what's wrong. Anybody have some insight on this matter?

I can think of two possibilities:
    1) There is a fault in the S-Video cable/adapter
    2) Your TV is set to the wrong input setting
S-Video sends the luminence (brightness) and chromanence (colour) separately. Either the chromanence signal is not getting through (option 1 above) or the TV is not using it (option 2). In the UK, most TVs have a SCART connector which can accept composite video, S-Video or RGB video through the same socket - are you using this or something similar? The TV needs to be set to display the correct input connector (SCART) but also the correct signal (e.g., SCART S-Video, SCART RGB etc.). If you just select the default SCART option, it would probably be SCART-composite, which happens to use the same pin as the S-Video luminance signal so you get a black and white picture!
Hope this helps (and that I got the technical details right),
    Simon
Edit: in short I think this is an S-Video/composite video issue - either the Mac is sending composite video and the TV is trying to display it as S-Video, or the Mac is sending S-Video and the TV is set to display composite.

  • In design view, how to change the white panel background so white text displays? (I keep having to go to Live view to see it)

When I'm adding white text it doesn't show up as the background input panel is white, and I keep having to go into Live view to see the paragraph spacings etc. Is there a way round this, other than changing the text colour in CSS to, for instance, black, and then changing it back before I upload the page?

Hi, and thanks, but it's my fault, I think I'm describing it wrong!
I've attached two screenshots from that area of the screen, one with the white text on the white background (showing as invisible) and the other where I've highlighted the text so you can see where it is. The background .jpg isn't a solid colour, it's a pattern, and if I added an equivalent pattern to the text area div, it wouldn't line up properly on all sreen resolutions, so that's why I gave that div a transparent background. When I go into Live view, the page displays perfectly, but in Design view I can't see to make amendments to the paragraphs etc.

They don't appear in the same time but in 1 week.
    Please help me.

    hello italian friend!
the people who sold you the device, upon looking at it and realizing it has a defect, should provide you a replacement one, no need to waste too much time and energy trying to get in touch with Apple! After all, you are under warranty through your contract with your cell phone provider first and foremost!
    Good luck

  • Old Blue & White Studio Display

Hope this is the right forum for this one.
I have one of the Blue and White Studio LCD displays (Model 4551) which goes with my trusty B&W G3. I am about to get the backlights replaced as they are a little tired now and I was thinking that it might be possible to replace the actual LCD panel with a more modern one that has better contrast and viewing angles than the old one. Just wondered if any one has tried this or indeed found a suitable replacement panel at all.
Not cost effective I know but I would like any info anyway.

  • White Stripes/Display Turning Off

Last night I noticed a bunch of white stripes flicker for about a quarter of a second on my display. This happened multiple times. I shut it down with no problems.
Today I had no problems until everything froze. I could move the mouse, but it would not change from a text cursor. I manually shut it down.
I turned it back on, after a few minutes I had the same issue.
I turned it off manually, unplugged the power for about a minute, plugged it back in and turned it on. After a few minutes the white stripes flickered. I decided to back up everything. After about 10 minutes, during the backup process, the screen went black. I could feel that the computer was still on, but the display was black. I manually turned it off.
I have now been on for about 30 minutes with no problems. The computer was very hot when the display went black. Is it possible that this is an overheating problem?
    Any suggestions?

The iBook has a seperate display dimming (display turns off) and sleep mode timers. Go into the system preferences>energy saver to set these preferences. When your display turns off you should be able to reawaken it by pressing a key on the keyboard. Turning it off is not the best solution. If the problem happens while you are still using it or it doesn't awaken when you hit a key then you may need to post here again.

  • Screen turns bright white while display freezes? Any one know why?

The screen freezes and gets brighter and brighter until it becomes all white. If I move the screen of the laptop the display returns to normal for a brief second then starts turning white all over again. Anyone know what the problem could be?
I have already run that Hardware Test and nothing seems to be wrong...
    Thanks,
    Hijazirm

yes your screen interconnection has a bad bias rail
all lcd use a bias voltage supplied by the mainboard to keep it dark till its lit
    and control the back light
if you have already reset the smc http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
then you should think its a physical connection problem
and perhaps is just a small flat cable needs plugged back in
the flat flashed ribbon type cables can become disjointed from there socket
    or there small pads oxidise...
its a job for an apple dealer to fix the interconnections ribbon
by replacement or cleaning with a 'gold cloth' as you should use to clean the contacts on sims simms etc
and ribbon cables used in display interconnect mostly !!!
dont use any harsh methods a 'gold cloth ' is a special cloth that rough on one side smooth on the other
and has a chemical embeded to it for use on gold plate etc to clean it of crap...
and reseating the ends back to there sockets
its defo a job for an apple store etc...

    Hi,
    Try resetting your iPod:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430.
If that does not work, you will have to either restore your iPod or place it in Recovery Mode.  See the following support article:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414.

  • Touch displaying weird white gradient display after few minutes of use

I've had some issues last night with my 2G Touch. I was playing a game on it when my entire screen turned into a weird white and blue gradient pattern. The screen changed when pressing the Home button, so you can still interact with it, but you can only see this weird pattern. When I locked it for a moment then turn it back on, it'll display normally for a few moments, and then go back to this pattern.
Today, I turned it on to see if it happened again, and so far, although I only used it for 20-30 seconds, it didn't go to this pattern, but I'm worried that it might act up again.
The glass screen broke on me a few months ago, and I was going to call Apple to see what I could do to have that fixed. I don't know what the problem is now, though I have a feeling that since this new issue just started, the two things are unrelated.
I know about Apple being really picky about what they repair, and though I am willing to pay them if I must, I read somewhere that they can STILL refuse to repair it even if you're willing to pay. That and I had a Nano that the screen went bad on, and they said that there was "accidental damage" and sent it back to me without them describing any other option (which I think is weird. Never seen anyone ever just not give you another option to repair a broken product if the warranty won't cover something). So while I'm sure that the new issue isn't related to the broken glass, they could just say "no, we're not going to repair it" and send it back. I paid $300 for this, and it's my third iPod (don't worry, I'm not just doing what I can to kill these things. I've been using iPods for a few years now, so it's not like I'm throwing them against walls or anything like that). So I'm hoping there's some solution to this (because, other than the broken glass, everything worked fine up until this point). The other issue that I think MIGHT be related to the new issue is that I have had to full restore my Touch whenever I update the firmware (this has been twice now) because it suddenly began acting up when I tried to update it.
So yeah, I'm worried that something really wrong happened to my iPod that won't be fixed because of a shoddy repair policy. Any help will be appreciated.

I can't imagine that repairing this unit will be cheap, but you'll get good service and a fair price here:
    http://www.ipodjuice.com/ipod-touch-battery-replacement-products.htm
These folks can evaluate your repair, quote the price, and repair the unit itself.
Apple, of course, will not pay for repairs on a unit with a broken screen, and it's uncertain whether they'll consider it worthwhile to support a unit whose main problem may very well be related to the original broken screen. For that reason, getting an independent repair (at a good price) may be your more sensible option. First of all, your iPod will be fixed to your satisfaction; second, you won't have to pay Apple's high prices for repair.
