White Screen of death caused during update of IOS 8.3

My Girlfriend was updating her iPhone 5 to iOS 8.3, A message came in during and she clicked on it. This in turn caused the phone to with to the white screen of death with the apple logo and upload bar paused. We've tried the usual hard re-set, also plugged into iTunes for a factory restore but then it asks for you to click allow on the phone. We can't do this because we can't see anything other than the apple logo.
Every now and then the screen flashes and shows you the home page. and using siri we managed to make a call.
Any help or advise  would be great.
Very strange
Thanks
Jamie

DId she bother reading the message that appeared?
That is not a "White Screen of death". That is the reboot screen which the phone does while updating. You should have left it alone. Put the phone in Recovery mode and Restore it in iTunes.

  • New OS update = white screen of death.... can't even open in safe mode

my computer automatically did the OS update today (Jan 31). CRAP. Now I get to 30% on the update bar and it stops. goes to the white screen of death. same thing happened last time I updated (which is why i never wanted to upgrade again).
i WANT to boot in safe mode, but it won't let me. it goes right to the gray screen with the black apple and progress bar until it locks up as a white screen. seems like I've tried every shift+whatever combo, but noting forces it to stop. Any ideas on how to FORCE it to safe mode BEFORE the software tires to update?

I wasn't prepared to pay either so bit the bullet and used the code on the website.
The problem is caused by Apple changing the rules about drivers loaded on boot (kext or kernel extensions). If it finds an unsigned one (as the Trim enabler is) then it won't allow the driver to load, causing the system to hang at the "unavailable" sign.
I appreciate your reticence to use what seems like untested code – I too was wary, but my [albeit very basic] knowledge of programming led me to believe it would be ok. I can confirm it worked perfectly on my machine and allowed the machine to boot normally, but you will have to make the decision for yourself whether or not to try it. I've now uninstalled Trim enabler so that any future OS updates won't affect me.
Might you also be able to restore from a Time Machine backup?
    Hope that helps.

  • One Twitter feed causes white screen of death on iPad Air

II have a problem viewing ANY tweet from @NRO or @NROcorner. Whenever I click on a link in either of these tweets, within 10 seconds the screen clears so all I see is the white screen of death.
    ANy idea what causes this?
note, this is on an iPad air that was just updated to IOS 8.1.3

When I connect it the computer doesn't even recognize it now. I tried DFU mode but it just goes straight to the white screen from the apple logo. Apple logo is only up for maybe 3-5 seconds max. I tried to put it into DFU mode but it won't go :-/. It's looking like I'll be making a trip to the apple store. When I went to update it said it worked and was rebooting but when it rebooted it gave me the tether logo on the screen saying to connect to itunes. So I did that and it looped like this like 4 or 5 times and then just went white screen on me :-/

  • Since updating the software on my iPhone 3gs it has developed the so called "white screen of death". The phone has not been dropped or damaged in anyway, the problem only developed after software upgrade. Rung apple and they were less than helpful

since updating my iphone 3gs software it has developed the so called "white screen of death" this happened immediately after software install. It has never been dropped or damaged. I have tried the solution which seems to pop up most of holding down the power button and the home button for 10 seconds but this hasnt helped at all. Tried ringing apple, who were less than helpful and disinterested as the phone is out of warranty. I am hoping there is a solution which doesnt mean shelling out for a new phone! any ideas?

Basics from the manual are restart, reset, restore.
    Try all of these.
    If these fail, then:

  • App getting the "white screen of death" since iOS 8.2 update

    Hello!
Been playing an app called Solstice Arena since it came out. Now suddenly the game morphs into the "white screen of death" every time I hit the login button.
I tried all the usual things, turning the phone on/off, reinstalling the app, all to no avail.
Never had this problem before downloading iOS 8.2.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • White screen of death, unable to restore

OK, as the topic states I have the dreaded white screen of death on my G5 iPod video. I had a Powerbook problem that required me to reload all of my software and when I did, I inadvertantly updated iTunes and therefore also updated my iPod. I have always heard to avoid the updates since they may cause glitches and now I'll be much more careful in the future.
I have tried everything I can find on this site and others. I tried the simple reset about 100 times and also putting the iPod into disk mode. When resetting the Apple never appears BTW. In disk mode I can finally see it in iTunes (and on my desktop) but I get the 1418 (?) error when trying to restore. I am unable to erase/restore with disk utility. I can see my iPod under Disk Utility (the size/name/etc) but anytime I try to do anything with it I get an error. I never formatted it for Windows so I can't try those methods. I've tried every combo of button presses, unplugging/reconnecting part way through restore, deleteing iPod updater files, letting the battery drain for several days. Nothing works. White screen resets back to white screen. Or white screen (menu/select) to (select/play) for disk mode which is a dim white screen (kinda gray). BTW....it's out of warranty and the local Apple Store doesn't seem interested in helping me.
Any tips for me before I toss it in the trash and buy a Nano?

    Fixed! Thanks for nothin....

  • IPhone white screen of death:  Anyone else?

    To All,
Since the iPhone 3.0 software update I have been experiencing the white screen of death (basically the screen turns completely white but the phone still works fine in the background. You just can't see anything) on my iPhone 3g. You can reset the phone and it will come back just fine but a minute or two later the white screen will appear again. After a few minutes of resetting or leaving it alone it will go away.
I would like to know if anyone else having this problem since the 3.0 release. Did you experience this problem before the 3.0 release? Also, does it happen when your battery is around 50% and then stops when your battery is at 20%. Just wondering if the battery is starting to fail and this is causing something in the iphone to freak out and pop the white screen.

That happened to me once and the only was is to fix it is to use recovery mode.
    1. Connect your USB cable to your computer but NOT your iPhone.
    2. Turn your phone off.
    3. When your phone is off, press the home button and connect your iPhone to your computer.
    4. Your iPhone will turn on and keep pressing to the home button. iTunes logo will appear on your screen.
    5. You can start your restoration progress.
Hope this helps. Thats is how I saved my phone. It also seems to me that the phone you are using right now may had been jailbroken and stopped working.

  • OOB White Screen Of Death: Silverlight Installation required after each reboot.

    Hi,
we are getting White Screen Of Death on few user's machine for last few months and a number of users is getting added from last month for the same issue. Earlier we were using the CleanSilverlight from the following site
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2608523.
Now we have the following issue that requires immediate fix:
Whenever we apply CleanSilverlight then my OOB starts working fine but it start displaying same white screen after few days without any action (Installation/Uninstallation)
Whenever the system reboots then we need to apply CleanSilverlight and install the Silverlight once again on user's machine to work with OOB. It seems rebooting interferes with OOB application.
Both of these issues are very frequent from last one month. I don't know if any update to windows/browser is the root cause for the issue.
One the system is having the following configuration to run OOB:
OS name and version: Windows 7 32-bit
    Browser name & version: IE 8 & Google Chrome 38.0.2125.111 m
    Silverlight version: 5.1.30514.0
Any help would be greatly appreciated.Regards, Maddy

    Hi,
Clean the corrupted Silverlight installation and reinstall the Silverlight should fix the issue:
As mentioned above it does fix the issue but sometimes its not permanent solution, It just pop up once again.
I don't understand why should we downgrade the version of the Silverlight. Its working fine after applying CleanSilverlight
    and reinstalling Silverlight.
There must be something that's corrupting it. vize Antivirus, any new update etc.
Also I would like to know why the Silverlight is getting corrupted at all. Why do we need to apply CleanSilverlight?
Still looking for a proper solution.
    Regards,
    Maddy

  • White Screen of Death, Please Help

    Hey Guys ;
I have an imac 2010 with windows installed on it (No MacOS is installed). today I updated the windows and shut it down and after a few hours I turned it on but now I am only getting the white screen ! it doesnt boot up at all ! I dont know if this problem is related to windows update or not. it may be only luck that this has happened after updating my windows.
I tried to boot it from CD or a flash drive , but holding the option key or d or c doesnt do anything. when holding the option key , even the mouse cursor doesnt appear !
the only thing that works is reseting the PRAM , when I hold the option and command and p and r , I can hear the second chime , but still it doesnt boot up. it is why I am sure my keyboard is working. also I tried to reset the SMC but no results.
also I tried command + r and command + v , but no luck ! only white screen.
I dont understand why I dont get any kind of output ! even if my hdd is broken I should be able to boot from a CD , right ? or at least it should show some kind of error message or logs. but only white screen.
do you have any suggestions ?

Yes , I was using the original grey DVD. I tried holding all possible keys ! nothing worked.
Eventually I found out my HDD is dead , I opened my iMac and disconnected my HDD and now it can boot from CD. but the problem is that it shouldnt work this way. I have had a PC for many years and even if HDD dies , you can go to bios or boot from other devices and etc. it shouldnt cause a white screen of death !
may be apple is doing this intentionally so it can charge people for fixig their imacs ! it is not something complicated , it was just a dead HDD and I was getting no error messages or anything, Just a dead imac. thats frustrating.

  • White Screen of Death Questions [PLEASE HELP!]

If someone actually cares about my issue, they will read all of the following. Let's see how many of you are out here and how many just want to answer simple short questions for reputation.
Okay, so I've ran into my first ever iPod Touch issue. I've never owned an iPhone, but I have had an iPod in the past and know a bit about them. I'm going to be 100% honest and I need a serious answer because I'm upset and angry. If anyone can be bothered to read the following, THANK YOU. If anyone could help me out in any way by giving me suggestions/tips and/or a solution, THANK YOU. But anything that can help is appreciated.
I had my board shorts on when this ocurred. I went to the toilet, doing my own business. I had my iPod Touch in my bank pocket which went to about half way down my thigh. The iPod Touch at the time was facing away from my thigh. Pulling down my pants, the iPod Touch hit the tiled floor. It hardly even hit the floor, all I heard was a little click and I realised it was my iPod. It was flat at the time, I picked it up and pressed the Home button immediately to ensure it was okay. It sort of lit up like a white background, but had a very low opacity. Since it was flat, I assumed it was normal.
Putting my iPod on charge right after my toilet break, I waited and waited for it to charge quickly enough for me to see the screen as I was a little worried not having seen that faded screen before. When the Apple logo was to appear, it gave me a lit up white screen. I was so confused as there were no marks AT ALL on my screen or any other part of the iPod.
NOTE: My iPod is still under warranty.
Did my research and came to the conclusion that it was the infamous 'White Screen of Death'. Where do I go from here? I have no clue!
I have important information such as a To Do list and my Contacts within the iPod. I NEED to retrieve this information. Is there any way I can do this?
I can still use the iPod, as if the screen were showing. Sounds are working, but there is just a blank, lit up white screen. Sometimes when I hold the Home button, On/Off button & the Volume Up buttoon all at the same time for ~10-20 seconds, the Apple logo comes up as if the screen was all fixed. 5 Seconds later, it goes all funny as if there were faded white lines and a faded white background but still being able to see the logo/screen. When the iPod loads, it just goes back to the lit up white screen.
Here's another odd thing to this, when I leave my iPod Touch sitting in a spot remotely, without touching it for a few hours, when I come back to it and hit the Home button, the iPod will begin to work fine as if nothing ever happened. No white screen, no nothing, just simply use it as I wish. I can even sometimes lock it, and then unclock it again with it still showing perfectly. However, when I tend to click the On/Off button after this happens, or if I just continue to use it for ~1 minute, it will eventually do the same as the above paragraph in second last sentence.
    This may be important:
    The iPod charges fine.
The iPod can be used with my computer and iTunes fine.
To sum it all up, everything can be done, including using the iPod, but with a lit up white screen.
Here are some questions I have for you guys:
Will Apple cover this in my warranty?
If they won't, what should I do?
How much would a replacement screen cost?
Should I attempty to open my iPod if they do not cover it by warranty? (I have not attempted as I don't want to void anything).
What could be the cause and why?
How can I retrieve that important information? (Contacts & To Do List)
Have you got any suggestions/tips for me?
I need this resolved guys. I'm very upset and angry over the whole situation. If a little thump on the tiles like that (it's not like I dropped it or anything) can damage the screen that much, then this devices from Apple can't be very reliable. All I'm asking for is some genuine service/help to resolve my issue. If this can be done, I will be one VERY happy person.
    Daniel

Will Apple cover this in my warranty?
As stated above it is not covered by the warranty as it will be deemed accidental damage.  You can try explaining what happened to somebody at the Genius Bar and they may cut you some slack and replace it at no cost.  They might not though as Apple has started to really come down hard on eliminating replacing accidentally damaged iPods at no cost.
If they won't, what should I do?
Again, bring it into them anyways and explain what happened.  You have nothing to lose either way.  Otherwise, you really only have 2 other options.  Send it to a third party service center to have them take a look at it and possibly repair the iPod, or do some studying online and learn how to open up the device yourself and take a look.  There are some excellent step-by-step repair guides at http://www.ifixit.com/.
How much would a replacement screen cost?
This depends on where or how you have it repaired.  Here is Apple's repair pricing guide.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Third party repair centers will cost less and they'll actually swap out the bad part rather than just replace the entire iPod as Apple does.
Should I attempty to open my iPod if they do not cover it by warranty? (I have not attempted as I don't want to void anything).
If you have a warranty on it still, I wouldn't quite yet.  Take it to your local Apple store as explained above.  Otherwise, I would only if you feel comfortable working with small electronics and consider yourself handy with them.
What could be the cause and why?
As stated already, it could be a damaged or loose LCD ribbon cable or the LCD screen itself is damaged.  As to what exact component, there is no way to tell.
How can I retrieve that important information? (Contacts & To Do List)
Make a backup of the device in iTunes before taking or sending it in for service or before you decide to open it up (if you do happen to go that route).  See here what is included in the backup of the device.
    iTunes: About iOS backups
If you get a new or replacement device you can restore it from that backup.
Have you got any suggestions/tips for me?
As I have already stated numerous times, try taking it into your local Apple Store and see if there is anything can do for you such as swap it out.  Remember that they are not obligated to do so since the damage is technically accidental.  Be kind and polite when explaning what happened. You never know what could happen!

  • My iPod touch 4th gen has the white screen of death and won't connect to iTunes to restore.

I was updating from iOS 6 beta 1 to beta 2 when my ipod froze up and started showing the white screen of death. I've tried the trick where you hold the power and home button for ten seconds and tried to put it in DFU mode to restore. None of these tricks work and my screen is still white. Also I plug it into my Windows Vista computer with iTunes 10.6.3 but it wont show up. I really need help. I don't have warranty or money to buy a new one. My grandmother will heartbroken if $200 goes down the drain.

  • How to deal with the "white screen of death"?

My 1 hour old iMac (27 inch i5) just died. I had used it for less than 30 mins when it downloaded an OS update and rebooted. Then it refuses to boot, stuck in a white screen.
After that I slid in the recover disk and used the disk utility to restore the HDD as in the recover manual. It then spent 30 mins recovering,. However, on re-start it is still stuck in the white screen of death.
    What do i do now?

    Hi anerjee;
With a brand new Mac, personally I would not mess with it. I would take it back to Apple and ask them to fix it.

  • White screen of death - iMac OSX Lion

I upgraded my 2007 iMac to Lion and after a few days of perfect running the think locked up.  When I forced the power off and back on it seemed to be booting fine (chimes, apple logo, disk spinning up and I could hear the drive head seeking) but then it froze up in the "White Screen of death" (WSOD).  It was complete lockd up again, and nothing would bring it back.  I had to reboot again.  And again.  Everytime it seems to be ok, but then locks up after it the screen goes white. . I did command option , p r keys with three chimes. I have unplugged it and let it sit.  I disconnected all periferals.  I reset the SMC.  I booted into Single User mode and used unix commands to check the HD.  No errors found.  I disconnected my wireless Time Capsule.
Note that it appears to be booting fine at first with the useaul Apple Logo.  And when I boot into the Single User mode all the text indicates no faults.  The display and HD appear fine.
I inserted my original OSX Leopard disk and and tried to boot from it, using the "C" boot process and the Option boot method to manuualy select the DVD.  No good.  It just went into the WSOD again.
I have no idea what to try next!

    RATS!
After ersing (and zeroing) out the HD nothing changed.  I still could not completely boot up the install disk.  I tried the original Leopard disk, and the Apple Lion USB thumbdrive.  Both started the boot process, and gave me the grey Apple logo.  But then after a minute or two jumped into the White Screen of Death.
I then replace both RAM chips.  No change.
Now I have a brick.  A very large and heavy brick.
But the computer will woerk as Target Disk Mode, and it actually goes through a normal boot cycle.  That is, I can go into the Single Ud=ser mode and all UNIX command work fine.
Does anyone have any additional ideas of what can cause this?

  • White screen of death with little black clock thing

I've had the so called white screen of death for 2 days. Phone was locked in pocket. Took it out and there was a tiny error message on the screen. unfortunately I can't tell you what message it was :-(
Removed battery for long and short periods. Each time, when put bavck in, the led light flicks on and i get the white screen (without me powering it up). The phone is totally unresponsive.
I've tried the following but the computer recognises my phone (instead of 'unknown'), then I get the message "The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service provider or system administrator".
Done the downloads then nothing apart from the phone turning itself off. HURRAH! However, it's back to square one because if I touch it, we go back to the beginning.
    1) Make sure you have Blackberry Desktop Manager installed.
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/
    2) On your PC, go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following line exactly (meaning with the quotation marks):
    "c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader\loader.exe" /nojvm
    3) The Application Loader Wizard will appear -- click "Next."
    4) In the "Connection:" drop-down menu, you should see "USB-PIN: UNKNOWN". Click the "Next" button.
    5) You should then see a list of applications ready to be installed for your Blackberry. Hit Next and Finish and you are well on your way to getting your Blackberry back to life. Congrats! Just don't disconnect anything and let the lengthy process finish completely.
NOTE: If you do not see a list of applications mentioned in step 5 and instead see the message "The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service provider or system administrator," then you must download Blackberry's Operating System for your carrier and device.
    http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/BlackBerry_Operating_System_Downloads
Just select the appropriate carrier and network type, select your Blackberry model from the list and download the latest version. Install this download and follow the above steps again and you should be on the right path.
I've tried all of this on the old, slow laptop but have a mac as well.
    PLEASE someone HELP!

Suzi-Q wrote:. Seriously fed up about not being able to back up on a mac
Hi you can use the mac
    http://us.blackberry.com/apps-software/desktop/desktop_mac.jsp
However, if you haven't already done a backup, it is most certainly too late, but its worth a long-shot.
From your original post, it seems to me you did most things except a complete wipe without which I think you may be stuck with the white screen. Whether you use JL_CMDER or BBSAK to perform this vital step, they need a Windows OS. Whilst I do not have any mac knowledge, I do know that you can run Windows 7 on the mac. However, sounds like a faff to me. Can you not borrow a friends PC?
Below are the wipe and reinstall instructions which includes using JL_CMDER
This what I did to completely wipe my BB. I wrote this before starting and printed it off.
If your device is functioning, perform a backup now if you haven't already done so saving the file to a place and in a name that you can easily locate on computer.
I then uninstalled DTM and then deleted all other references to BB/Rim in Windows Explorer thus removing the OS for the BB from the computer in order to ensure that the version I would reinstall would be a brand new downloaded version.
Get the latest Desk Top Software (DTS)
    http://us.blackberry.com/apps-software/desktop/?CPID=OTC-DSKTPSW&cp=OTC-DSKTPSW
and install it on the computer.
Get the correct latest version of the OS
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
    and save it to computer.
To erase all the data on your BlackBerry device, complete the following steps.
    1) Download JL_Cmder from http://www.4shared.com/get/oqP9V-2Q/JL_Cmder_v19.html
    2) Install JL_Cmder to computer.
    3) Double check you have already backed-up the BB. If you DO NOT, you will lose ALL data.
    4) Make sure the DTS is closed and plug in the BB to computer via USB
    5) Go to the JL_Cmder on your computer and double click it to start. Now,this may take a few tries to connect, so keep trying until it does.
    6) On the first screen, Press any key to continue.
    7) Now, if your device uses a password, enter it now. If not, press "N"
    8) Press 4 to initiate the WIPE
    9) Press "Y" to continue
    10) Now type "blackberry" to continue
    11) On the BB you will see a white screen with a'507' Error. Don't worry, this is what you want! You are now ready to install the OS.
Launch the new Desk Top Software on the computer
1). On the home screen of the BlackBerry® Desktop Software, click Device > Update my device.
2). Click View Other Versions. Click the version of the new OS you previously downloaded.
3). Click Install. The DTM will install the OS and then provide you with a list of applications to install. If you have had difficulties with an app, do not install it.
Do not disconnect the device until the whole process is completed and the device has rebooted.
After 10 minutes reboot again by removing the battery whilst powered-on and leave it out for a couple of minutes.
Leave it again for 10 minutes. You should now have a fully functioning BB!
