White screen on attempted restart plus disk stuck in drive

I had to restart my iMac after uninstalling a piece of software. On the attempted restart all I get is a white screen after the usual Apple sound. I did try to restart using what I thought was the system disk, but unfortunately I inserted the Snow Leopard disk by mistake and not the system disk (entirely my fault). I now have two problems - white screen on restart and a stuck disk. I have tried holding down the mouse key, the shift key and the "C" key repeatedly but none of them work. Appreciate any suggestions.

If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there.

  • IMac Aluminum (intel-based) - Stuck in restart and disk stuck in drive.

I've recently been having some issues with my new iMac (purchased in April of 2008).
First, I inserted an MP3 disk with actual files on it which was created on a PC and (1) have not been able to access the disc, (2) not been able to eject the disk (and have read all post pertaining too) and (3)the disk remains as an icon on my desktop.
Second, and in my view a result of the stuck disk, the computer gets stuck when I ask it to restart. It will wipe all icons from the screen, and remain just with my desktop background for hours. None of the keyboard commands work, the mouse still moves, but it seems to be stuck before turning off and restarting.
The above two problems have now been going on for the better part of 3 weeks.
If anyone has had this problem, can give advice or answers it would GREATLY APPRECIATED and save me a trip to the genius bar. Please help!
    Ryan

I'd go ahead and force a shut-down by holding the power button down. I've had to do that a couple of times myself for one reason or another and have not had problems as a result.
Once it's shut down wait a few moments and start it back up while holding down the mouse button. I'll bet that this will work for you.

  • White screen and "question" sign? Disk fail?

Hi there! After some hanging i switched of my iMac manually. Trying to restart then i've got a white screen with a blinking guestion letter on a folder icon... ^( Does it mean i've lost my startup disk? Or what? Tryed to restart from system CD (10.6) but disk utility shows no hard disk, but installation CD and somewhat called "media" - unformated with zero capacity... Some ideas?

The blinking question mark means your Mac can't find a valid OS on any attached disk to start from. Together with what Disk Utility shows, this is quite possibly a sign that the startup disk has failed. (This may be what caused the crash.)
However, I'm not sure what "media" might be. In Disk Utility, you can highlight it & press Command + i to get info about it. One of the items of info should be its "Disk Identifier." If that has an "s" in it (like "disk0s2") it is a partition on a drive; if not (like "disk0") it is an entire drive. If there is no "Disk Identifier" entry at all, it is something other than a drive or partition.
If it appears to be an entire drive, it may be the one containing the startup disk (IOW, your internal drive). This may mean that the drive has not failed, but only that its partition scheme info has become corrupted. If so, you can select it, switch to to Disk Utility 's "Partition" tab, reformat the drive, & restore it to a useable state. Note that this will erase anything on it, so if you do not have a backup you may want not to do this until you see if a data recovery utility (like Data Rescue II) can save any or all of your files.

  • Won't get past white screen on shutdown/restart

When I choose shut down or restart on my 2012 rMBP, it logs out and moves to the white screen. From what I've seen, for an unlimited time.
When it does this (which I think is every time), my only option is press-and-hold standby key - which I hate doing!
This has been a problem since before Mavericks. I've tried resetting pram, repairing permissions etc etc. any other advice?
Even just a list of things to check which I may have already would be appreciated so I can discount them.

Been looking for a solution to this for ages and still no luck.
Even when I boot up in Safe Mode I still get infinite white screen when I shut down!!

  • White screen on auto restart following Lion "successful" installation?

After downloading Lion (about 3-4 hours) on my iMac, and after installing it (about 35 minutes), I got a big red check mark on my screen saying the installation was "Successful," and a note that said my computer would automatically restart in 10-9-8-7-6, and so forth, seconds.  I watched and waited.  Down to zero. Then a white screen came on with the Apple logo, and a spinning wheel. And there it has stayed. No transition to blue screen, nothing. Just a white screen with the logo and spinner.
I have manually shut down, I have unplugged the plug, and waited between times. Multiple tries. Nothing. Just the white screen, Apple logo, and spinner.

The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition (if running 10.7 or later) by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime.

  • HELP! iBook G4 won't start, disk stuck in drive.

My iBook G4 was shutdown while a CD game was running. Now the computer only turns on to a blue screen and the eject button won't respond. The only thing the apple store ever tells anyone is to buy a new computer, but I want to see if i can salvage this one. HELP?
    iBook G4

    Hello,
Well I am pretty sure I can help you remove the disk from the drive, but unsure that your iBook G4 will run properly again. Try the following to remove the disk:
    1) Power off, press and hold down the trackpad button, power on and wait. Report back exactly what happened.
    2) Power off, power on holding down these keys at the same time (apple, option, o, f) type the following in when/if you see a white screen with black text:
    eject cd
Now, type in "mac-boot", just like that but with no quotation marks and it will now boot.
Sounds like you have an iBook G4 with a logic board failure, but I could be wrong. I hope this help you. Best of luck.

  • Windows XP Disk Stuck in Drive - Help

I finally got around to installing windows XP with Boot Camp on my Mini. Unfortunately my keyboard (wireless) does not work during set up and I cannot get past a screen in the windows set-up.
When I reboot it defaults to the windows setup disk in the drive. How can I eject this disk..
Every time I restart it starts installing windows again...

    Hi Pumpkin,
sorry it didn't work for you.
Did you used Mac specific keyboard?
I just reinstalled my winXP in Parallels and used my Macally USB keyboard (made for a Mac). The keyboard should have an Eject key which is NOT usualy on PC generic keyboards. You hold the Eject right when you restart the Mini and it should eject the CD,DVD. It did for me...

  • Help! Disk stuck in Drive

I was loading some photo's onto a disk and when I went to eject the disk the CD icon turned into a folder with a circle that looks like a radiation warning it also looks just like the "Burn Folder". When you Control left click there is usually an option to eject...its not there. I tried to eject with the button on the keyboard....nothing. Tried turning off the computer, that didn't help either.
Can anyone tell me how I might eject the disk stuck in my drive?
    Thanks

You can get another way also...
On your main hard drive, dig down into System > Library > CoreServices > Menu Extras. Inside that window, double-click on the icon called Eject.menu.
    http://www.creativetechs.com/tips/quicktips_51.html
You'll now have an Eject Icon in the Menubar.

Is there an emergency eject hole on the newer iMacs? I have a disk stuck in the drive and the computer won't boot. Need to get this disk out to load repair disk.

If you are getting nothing at all you should take it in for repairs.

  • MBPr Late2013 - Wont restart, freezes on white screen after invoking Restart

My Macbook Pro Retina (Late 2013) often fails to restart  (though not always).
It locks up after the screen goes white just before the shutdown/restart process and holds there untill force powered off and then powered back on.
Is there any log somewhere in console that might help point to the issue?
Note, This seems to have started around the 10.9.3 update though I am not sure.

You can run the combo updater to refresh your files, but you might need to give everything time to shut down.
OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 (Update (Combo)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1746
See the fix suggested here if the combo doesn't help:
Slow and Stalled Restarts and Shutdowns

MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install. So if you think you've got a borked 10.8.4 install from a regular update, just run the 10.8.4 Combo Updater on that system.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.9.1 to 10.9.2. If somehow the 10.9.2 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.9.1 and 10.9.2 it will still be stale after the delta update.

  • Satellite P100 (PSPA6A) - White screen, freezes then restarts by itself

    Hello,
I have a Toshiba Satellite P100(PSPA6A) and am running Windows XP on it. Over the past month, I have had a problem with my computer where the screen turns white, it then freezes and restarts by itself.
I have taken it to a computer store to get it checked out but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I have tried to find if any programs are the source of this problem but I have not been able to find any. My computer can be on for 10hrs before this problem occurs and it can be on for about 5mins before this probelm occurs. It can also happen during the windows loading screen before it reaches the welcome screen. If this helps, there is a slight delay from when the screen turns white and when it freezes (I have music playing in the background on several occasions where the music was still playing for a few seconds while the screen was white, and then it froze and restarted).
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi!
Did you already check the RAM by yourself using Memtest86 as Boarder suggested? I mean Memtest86 is really great for testing the RAM and if there is a problem, Memtest86 should find it.
Furthermore I would recommend checking the HDD. Therefore you can use Drive Fitness Test and Google is your friend to find it.
    This program is also freeware.
In worst case you should go to an authorized service provider. Maybe its a problem of the mainboard or CPU and this can be checked from a notebook technician.
    Bye

  • Disk stuck in drive, MBP won't start up!

Yesterday, i was burning a CD in iPhoto, but i realized that i had only selected 1 photo to burn. I tried to force quit iPhoto, but this froze the computer. I shut it down, rebooted, and the apple logo would not show up at startup! I tried ejecting the disk by holding the mouse (as the manual directs), but to no avail. I cannot even get my MBP to start up! Help! Please?

Ahhhhh! I had the same experience lately. Scouring through these forums I found one individual "solved" their problem by using a library card. Seems that, if you ever so gently insert the card into your front slot, before start up, and press the card upon the top surface of the cd... in order to slow it down a tad... it forces the cd to eject. I had this happen and did the procedure mentioned above and it honestly worked! All the other tricks of the trade were fruitless. I've had a PB and never encountered this in the past.

  • White screen at reset.  Won't start up with install disk.

White Screen persists on restart. Folder with ? appears after a few minutes. Tried safe start - nothing. Tried RAM reset (option, cmd, p, r) - nothing. Tried to restart with C key to use install disk, C drive powers and spins for awhile - nothing. Thought its was hard drive but, wouldn't install disk by pass that?
    No outside devices plug in.
Son's computer, he plug in iphone and it wouldn't show on desktop so he reset the computer and now this.
    Help!

I have the same issue. I had noticed over previous weeks that the fan seemed to be on quite a lot when the computer was just left idling. Anyway- there is now an odd repetitive intermittent clicking as it tries to start up. Get nothing then the ? folder. I have tried all the tips in the manual. Managed to load utilities disk and there is no recognition of the HD at all. All a bit worrying...
Related questions- (1) are my iPod touch photos saved in full resolution on the iPod (or do you still have to enable the iPod for this?) (2) Can I download them from the iPod to another computer. (3) Can I do the same with iTunes?
If anyone has had a similar experience and been to an engineer / service provider I would love to hear what was found, and whether the HD was recoverable.
    Many thanks all-
    Rob
