White screen on sleep wake up

When I try to take up my iMac I get a white screen and is completely unresponsive. I have to hold down the power button to do a reset to be able to use the computer.

OK, try some basic resets. Reset the PRAM and SMC, do each 3 times. If you need instructions please click Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets

  • IMac white screen after sleep since latest update

Ever since I updated our iMac to 10.8.3, we get a blank white screen when we wake it from sleep. We can "wipe away" the white to reveal the desktop by dragging the mouse across the screen. It appears to be a video memory issue.

I have the same problem ever since I updated to 1.8.3.
Have any of you heard about a possible way to fix this?

Ipod touch 4th gen needed a new screen and sleep/wake switch.  So, I replace them.  I was able to get to settings and do "erase all content and settings".  I am not able to totally shut this device off as it keeps restarting after a few seconds.  I have used itunes to restore and also recover.  Device will actually shut off and stay shut off if I leave it connected to the computer.  The moment I unplug (3 seconds) the apple logo appears, it boots, unlock screen appears, I can unlock and operate normally, unplugged or not.  Just cant get it to completely shut down unplugged.  Any thoughts?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
      - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem. Maybe you installed a bad component or damaged something during the repair/replacement.
Apple will not help since you worked on the iPod yourself.

  • IPod Nano 6th Gen - Functional but white screen on pressing wake/sleep button

    Hi
I have an iPod Nano 6th Gen (out of warranty & applecare) - hasn't been dropped etc & never had any trouble.
This morning I got the white screen after unplugging it from charging.
I have tried hard reboot (power button + vol down). I have put it into disc mode (hard reboot + both volume buttons) and restored it to factory settings from itunes (10.6.3) . I've even put it into diagnostic mode and looked around to see if there were any tests I could do.
Functionally the ipod works ok - plays music, volume changes, and it will shuffle on shaking/ play pause on double pressing the power button.
The problem is when I switch off the screen by pressing the power button once - if I try to switch the screen on again I only get the white screen (although this doesn't affect music playing etc).
The way to get around this is either doing a hard reboot (which is a pain as it removes all my settings) or by switching off the ipod, waiting 5 minutes, then switching it on again (this preserves my settings). If I switch off the ipod and try to switch it back on within 5 mins, it's straight to the white screen.
The only other odd thing I noticed was that the screen was shaky/jolty and graphics not quite lining up etc, but this only lasted 10s and went once I started playing music...
Any ideas as to what is causing this? I'm guessing maybe a hardware problem but it seems strange that there is no white screen on switching on, just from waking.
It was a present from my dad and I'm very fond of it so would like to keep it/fix it if possible!
    Thankyou!

    Hello bfsf,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iPod nano (6th generation) displays a white screen after waking from sleep. First let my say that you have completed some great isolation and troubleshooting steps on your own. Because the issue is still present after the fantastic troubleshooting you already completed, it may be necessary to have this iPod evaluated for service. If you would like more information on this process, please read over the information in the attached link.

  • IPod touch white screen after sleep?

After I put my iPod Touch to sleep, and I wake it up, I get a white screen that flickers from time to time, then just goes right back to sleep. I can sometimes coax it into coming up by sliding my finger over where the slid to unlock button would be, but that doesn't always work. I just bought it yesterday. Is this a widespread issue or should I just take it back?

Happens on my one aswell... but happens at any battery life level.
I don't know if it is me just me speculating or whatever but it seems to happen when i leave it for a few minutes on sleep... and so far it has only happened whilst listening to music.
Also, just for the record it is a week 38 model.
I might go into my local apple store on Saturday and see what i say, but sod's law says that when i try and show the genius it wont work.

  • White screen after sleep using 10.8.3

Ever since I upgraded to 10.8.3 using the Combo update, whenever my computer wakes from sleep, I get an all-white screen.  I can "select" parts of the screen using the mouse and the regular wallpaper comes into view.  At that point I can use the computer just fine.  I have re-installed the combo updtae and restarted the computer but the "white-outs" keep happeneing.  Any thoughts as to why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?  Thanks.

Try resetting the PRAM and SMC.
Restart the computer holding down the command - option/alt - P - R keys before the grey screen appears. Continue to hold until you hear the startup chime for the second time.
    Reset NVRAM/PRAM
Try an SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.
    Reset SMC
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Decline call ios 7 lock screen, not sleep wake double tap

I am sure the frequency of sleep wake button will kill the button
Ios 6 has it, please give it back.

Don't know if a Soft Reset would Fix it, but it won't risk anything either.  Hold down the Sleep button and the Home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears then wait for the Reset to return you to the Lock Screen.  Even if it works, you won't know until the next time you push the Sleep button to Reject a Call.  I think you may want to depress the Sleep button twice rapidly to reject the incoming call.

  • Help! Stuck on white screen after sleep mode and won't start again!

Bought the iMac last week, updated to 10.5.1. Worked well until this morning after I did a security update. Then put it in sleep mode - and basta! After I wanted to work on it again - it didn't restart. So, I had to switch off using power button, but it never started again and always got stuck on the white screen with the Apple logo and the rotating loop. Tried to repair permissions - cannot do it, as it says there is an error. Tried to re-install from DVD the Leopard while archiving the previous information - can't do either - says error. Now trying to re-install it again with an erase option. But this is not a good option, people! This is pretty very much disappointing, Apple!
    Can anyone help, please!

Boy that is way too bad.
Could you tell us what the error message was?
While sometimes the error messages are not very informative, other times they are. That might be a clue as to what is going on.
When you restart from the DVD you have the option to access Apple's Disk Utility and repair the disk.
You might want to try that, skip repairing permissions at this point.
You can also reset the computer by unplugging all cables including the power cable for at least 15 seconds and then plug in the power cable and keyboard and restart.
You can reset the PRAM by holding down the command-option - p - r keys simultaneously during restart and waiting for the startup chime then releasing those keys after the second chime to allow the start to continue.

  • White screen from sleep after 3.1.2 update

I just updated my Ipod touch G2 to 3.1.2. It had worked flawless for over a year until now.
Immediately after the update this problem started.
When turning on from sleep mode the screen is white. If I “swipe” the white screen to access the desktop I hear the sound so I am sure it is working behind the white screen.
If I hold the power button to turn it off then restart it with the power button it starts with the normal desktop and everything works. I have hard booted many times and restored 3 times and this problem still exists.

With all my online resources used up with no success, I made an appointment with the closest Genius Bar at the Apple store.
I took the touch in powered off and asked the genius to turn it on, without telling him the problem other than "white screen". It powered up and he swiped the screen and the icons appeared as it should. He asked me what was the problem. I said to put it to sleep and then back on, he did and got the white screen and could not get rid of it without rebooting. After some research on his laptop and a bit of playing with the touch he said he would replace it FREE of charge even though it was out of warranty.
I brought the new touch home and connected it to ITunes on the same computer I used before and updated the software to 3.1.3 and added all my music and apps. It has worked fine since so I am sure the original touch had a problem that was not related to anything I did or a problem in my computer.
I applaud Apple "real" people for standing behind their product and replacing it. Unfortunately SHAME on their tech support for not offering any usefull help other than in the end after three different support people suggesting the genious bar.
    Case closed!

  • IMac 21.5 inch mid 2011 white screen when I wake it,  holding down mouse button and sweeping the screen restores the desktop.  Any one else had this and what was the solution?

When the Mac is awaken from sleep mode the screen is white.  I can hold the mouse button down and sweep the screen and the desktop reappears and everything works as normal..This just started and I am concerned that some hardware, video card or video memory is failing.  Has anyone else had this problem and what was the solution?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.  Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • White Screen of Death....Any ideas

My iPhone 3G has recently been getting a white screen when I wake it up. The phone still works, but the screen is essentially dead. I can reset it and it comes back to normal, only to do it again later. Sometimes it works for hours without needing to be reset sometimes only seconds. I tried installing the new OS upgrade and reset to the factory settings, but that didn't fix the problem.
Any ideas? I am not that close to an Apple store and with the iPhone 4 coming out all the stores are way to insane.

    Welcome to the discussions,
did you restore "as new iphone", without using the latest backup? There might be corrupt files in the backup causing this problem. If this does not fix it, you'll have to get it looked at by Apple.

  • Where do I find the 'home' and 'sleep/wake' buttons on my iPad?

One user suggested I reboot my iPad by holding down the HOME and SLEEP/WAKE buttons at the same time. Where do I fine the home and sleep/wake buttons?  I am new to apple. Thank you.

  • My daughter tried to open a game on her Ipod touch and the screen went white and I can't get it to do ANYTHING...I've tried holding the sleep/wake button and it does NOTHING, still only a white screen.

My daughter tried to play the My Horse game on her Ipod touch that she got for Christmas and when she opened the game it said something about sending "push notifications" and gave the choice of "don't allow" or "ok"...we chose "don't allow". After that the screen went white and now we cannot get the Ipod touch to respond to anything. I tried holding the sleep/wake button to try to restart it and it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions to get this device working again???

Try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If that doesn't work, try a Restore:
From iTunes, select the iPad and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad.
There's more that you can do.  Post back if none of the above solves the problem.
By the way, I always allow "push."  That allows the app developer to "push" information to your device rather than waiting for you to ask for it.  However, "don't allow" shouldn't cause the problem that you're experiencing.
