White screen on wake up & screen saver

On March 25th, 2013, I updated from Lion 10.7.5 to Mountain Lion 10.8.3.  I began to get the white screeen on wake up that others have posted about.  I tried several of the fixes that were suggested with no success.
My normal set up for screen saver and energy saver is as follows:
Screen saver comes on at 5 minutes using Slideshows/Snapshots which pulls photos from PhotoStream.  At 10 minutes, the computer sleeps.  When I press the space bar to wake up the computer, I get the white screen.
I experimented as follows:
I turned off the screen saver completely and did not get any white screens.  Then I put the screen saver on utilizing ScreenSavers/Flurry, and did not get any whote screens.  I then went back to my normal set up as described above, and the white screens returned.
So in my particlar situation, it seems the white screen problem is only related to using the Slideshows with pictures from PhotoStream.  Not the most scientific de-bugging approach, but perhaps this will help someone to discover a solution.

Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Touch displays white screen on wake

    Hi
I've had my 8GB iPod Touch for a few weeks now, and I love it to pieces.
It works perfectly, except occasionally when I wake it from a sleep, the screen just goes totally white. I'd say this happens roughly 1 out of 10 times when I wake it (by pressing either Home or Sleep/Wake).
It does not affect the performance of the Touch in any way, as far as I can tell. But I do have to press sleep/wake again to send it back to sleep to get rid of the white screen; then wake it again, and it will wake up fine.
Is this anything to worry about? It doesn't really irritate me that much but if there is an easy way to fix it then that'd be great.
    Thanks for any help

    Good morning,
I have the same problem. But your solution does not work! Have you any idea?
Do I do return to sav of apple?

    Hello all,
I have a 14.88G iPod Nano that I currently use as my primary watch. A week or so ago I started to experience a blank white screen when I press the "sleep/wake" button instead of the watch face (I have it set to wake from sleep to display the clock). When I hard reset it, it will come back fine and the screen will respond and work as normal, as soon as I manually put it to sleep by pressing the "sleep/wake" button and then try to wake it the same thing happens and I have a blank white screen that doesn't respond to touch gestures or anything.
What I have tried so far to no avail:
Numerous hard restarts (holding the "sleep/wake" button with the volume - button).
Tried this: iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
Changed the watch face to display.
Recharged the device overnight (without full discharge).
Since none of this works I'm out of ideas. Eventhough I have a 6G Nano it should no longer be under warranty since I was sent it as a replacement for a different (older) product.
Any ideas? Is this a known problem? Thanks in advance for any insight any of you could provide. Also, what time is it??
    Regards,

    Hey,
I have the exact same problem as you have described. I also used my ipod as a watch but starting from today, whenever I unlock it the screen turns white until a reset is done. Even a factory reset through itunes didn't fix it.
    Have you found any solution?
    Bah, this is annoying.

  • White Screen (not of death) on wake-up

So the reason why I added "not of death" to this thread title is that generally the "white screen of death" implies that the apple device goes to a white screen more or less permanently. My issue, on the other hand, is slightly different. The issue is as follows:
    - when attempts to wake up/turn on the ipod touch (32GB 4th gen), it goes to a white screen for a few seconds then goes back to sleep/turns back off
    - the period during which the white screen is on varies from as few as 4 second, up to something like 15 seconds
    - sometimes when reset attempts are made, the screen goes back to white, INSTEAD of going to the black silver apple screen (indicating that the reset/restart was successful)
    - this phenomenon has become more frequent over the past few weeks since I've purchased the device (delivered 26 Dec. 2010).
    - sometimes I still get a normal wakeup/startup with my device (going straight to the unlock screen), and by sometimes I mean something more like "seldom"
Another point of note is that I've never dropped my device or bumped it or knocked it around. I'd appreciate some help with this issue since it doesn't seem to be the same as other posters. This actually happened the 3rd time I used the device, but when I brought it back to the store it was working fine (go figure).
At this point, *my major question is whether or not I should bring it in to get it serviced or replaced*. Thanks ahead of time.
    -Andy

If a restore didn't help, it sounds like either the screen or logic board is bad.

  • Password button checked but not required to open screen saver or wake up

I want my iMac to require a password to wake from sleep or restore the screen. The button for this option (Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver) is checked under Security, but is not being used. I tried unclicking and reclicking the button, and I tried making sure iTunes is turned off, in case having a radio station playing prevents something from happening, but no luck. Any suggestions?
    David

I have seen many threads about this over the years, and have even seen it on my own Mac (but it's working fine right now.) The long and the short of it is that I no longer trust that feature to work as advertised. Now I fast user switch to the login window before sleeping my Mac or leaving it unattended. The next person to use the Mac will need to enter the account password to get back in, so this really works just as well as what the screen saver password is supposed to do.
I even wrote a little script to switch to the login window and then put my Mac to sleep when I press Command-F13. I can share how to do that with you if you like.

  • On an iMAC running OSX10.8.4, after a "sleep" it wakes to white screen, no response to any commands. Have to reboot. Any suggestions?

About half the time when I allow my iMAC to go into sleep mode it wakes to a blank white screen.  No sequence of commands will get it out of white screen. I have to re-boot from start and then it gives an error dialog box "you shut down because of a problem".  Is there a bug in 10.8.4, or am I missing something?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • For the past 2 weeks when I wake my computer I get a white screen in front of my background

for the past two weeks when i wake my computer from the sleep mode, I have a white screen in front of my background and the hard drive spins like I have restarted my computer.

Could be any number of things. What user trobleshooting have you tried? Restart (power off/on) reset, hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. See if it works after the phone restarts. Next is a restore from a backup (make sure you made a current one), then restore as a new device, which deletes all data from your device. If it doesn't work after all that, then make an appointment at the Genius Bar at the local Apple store, it is probably a hardware issue.
I have seen something similar which is generally diagnosed as a hardware issue.

  • 2012 21.5" iMac wake from sleep white screen probs

I have my new 2012 21.5" iMac. It's a top end one with fusion drive for ref. when I'm waking it from sleep I get a total white screen, with the time in digital in the top RH corner, and nothing.
First few times I had to hold down the power button to restart it. This time I shook the mouse and had the effect whereby it "colours/reveals" the screen when I move about, pixel by pixel if you understand?
By doing this I was able to see my login n,ae, clicked this and the screen went to my password ask screen, which was fine.
Bit worried on this as its a brand spanning new iMac. Is it just me or is my iMac (already) faulty? I'm sure I had it a few times on my old 2007 Alu iMac as well.
    Any help?
    Cheers

    Resolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
    Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
        1.    Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.  Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
        2.    Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

  • Wake and straight to screen saver

Whenever I wake my PowerMac G5 Dual 2Ghz (10.5.3), it goes straight to the screen saver. No matter if it slept because of the Energy Saver preferences, or because I manually set it to sleep.
It wakes, there's a pause, and it displays "looking for pictures" (I have a folder of pics set as the screensaver), then the pictures are shown.
How can I stop it? There's no reason for it to go to the screensaver right after the Mac wakes.

After playing with it a whole bunch of times, I've found this:
Yes, it's set to go to the screen saver if the cursor is pointed at one of the corners. But:
The cursor position before sleep will be no where near that corner. I've hit the sleep-combo keys when the cursor is well away, and used a key (not the mouse) to wake the Mac up. Just before the system goes to the screen saver, the cursor is in that hot corner.
The question then, is, why is the cursor resetting its position to 0,0 (x,y)?

Hi, the wifes new iPhone 3GS keeps showing a white screen when she tries to wake it up. Should I restore it? If so will we loose all the info on it?

  • Retina Macbook Pro doesn't wake up from screen saver

    Hi There -
I've been having some issues with my computer coming back to life after the screen saver has been initiated. Once it freezes, it's frozen for good and requires a restart. This has been happening relatively frequently and I'm assuming it's got something to do with the new hardware, specifically the retina display itself?
Anyway, I'd roll the dice and upgrade to Mountain Lion, but I've got some programs that have not been tested in that environment and I'd rather stick with Lion for the time being.
Has anyone else had this issue?

I am also having the same issue. There's another thread here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19004375#19004375
Mine is frozen when I come back to my machine and wake it up... the lock screen appears but it's frozen - usually I can move the mouse around and either see the arrow or spinning beach ball. Sometimes I notice the time is frozen from several mintures prior from when I left the machine ... I have turned of the lock on screensaver option for now to see if that will keep it from freezing.
