White Space and Centering Help

Hi All - I'm so sorry to ask this as I am sure it has been
asked a million times just today... I just can't seem to find the
answer! I have the books, I have googled it.... I'm stuck!
(obviously I'm a beginner!)
So my question is: How do I get my webpage to "center" or
"expand" to the monitor, and how do I get rit of the white space
around my site??? I've looked at the code.... I just can't seem to
figure it out!! I have Dreamweaver 8... my website is
here... please take a
look... any help will be MUCH appreciated!
Thank you!!

quote:
Well thanks for the kind words about my site! When I view it
in a larger-than-normal screen my page is to the left and there is
lots of white space to the right.... thought it made the site look
unprofessional, as I don't see other sites like this... is it just
that the other sites I see are written with a different type of
script?
I should think that they are produced for narrower screens.
My screen resolution is 1280 X 800, and I find it quite typical --
especially for a lap top. When I opened your sight I could not see
all of the content and was compelled to scroll to the right or
widen my viewing window for full visibility.

I’m completely self-taught and designed my site before
getting my books…. Now I can’t even answer my own
questions from my books! Ha!
I am also self-taught, but have learned
primarily from the software manuals that accompany my software,
online tutorials, Google searches, and more recently this forum.
If you want to design a webpage to fill a large screen, but
still be very viewable for those with smaller screens, then you
must make the content expandable. The dimensions of your content
are all fixed.
The suggestions that I have provided are an easy fix, but I
fear those more knowledgeable than myself may tell you to start all
over again -- well maybe not completely, as you have some very nice
elements.

  • Keep white spaces and carriage returns?

    I'm viewing a column -VARCHAR2(4000)- in a standard report column.
    The column value contains white spaces and carriage returns.
    I put "white-space:pre;" in CSS Style, but it still skips carriage returns...
    What can I do to view white spaces and carriage returns?
    I'm using apex 3.0 and IE 7.
    Saad.

    I'm using apex 3.0 and IE 7.There's your problem...
    IE6 (and, since there don't seem to be any docs saying anything different, presumably IE7) don't support white-space: pre in quirks mode. Don't ask me why - probably in one of MS efforts to "not break the web".
    All the APEX built-in templates are rendered in quirks mode as they don't supply complete DOCTYPEs. If you are using a standard APEX template or a custom template without a complete DOCTYPE declaration you are probably seeing this quirks behaviour.
    It looks like this will change in IE8.

  • Why would white space and line breaks in sql query increase runtime

    Using 11.2.0.3.0 on unix sprac server, 8 cpus 32 cores 12TB storage. We have 16 batch servers doing inserts and ~100 users doing mostly queries.
    We have a wierd issue,  we have a long query that takes 30 seconds to run 1st time then 10-20 secs every other time. Based on knowledge of DB we expected it to take a lot less.  Then a developer reformatted it by taking removing extra white space and line breaks.  all of sudden query takes 6 secs first time and 0.8 every other time.  we tripled checked to ensure they are identical and that only difference is white space and line breaks.  We tried it with SQLDeveloper, TOAD, SQLPLUS, from out desktops, appserver. we could reproduce it every time, with white space 10-20 secs without it 0.8 secs.  Query is 200 lines long with white space 30 without it.
    Why would having white space make such a dramatic difference?  because the query is longer eventhough its identical?  We checked parsing times, etc, no difference.  Is there some network setting, oracle parameter, sqlnet setting?  We spent hours looking on google and found nother

    Do you have some sort of horrific network connection between the client and the database such that it would take 8.5 seconds to transmit a few kb of SQL to the server?  That seems most unlikely.
    How are you determining the query plan?  Are you absolutely sure that both SQL statements have the same plan_hash_value when they are actually executed (not just when you generate a query plan without executing it)?  What are the differences in wait events when you execute the two?
    The sql_id will change when you add or remove whitespace.  There are various methods of modifying query plans that are tied to a sql_id.  My wager would be that you have a profile/ outline/ etc. that is not there for the reformatted one which is causing a query plan difference.  My next guess is that you have an accepted plan for the old statement, you haven't set up a process to let the plan evolve, and the reformatted statement starts with the plan that the old statement would get if you allowed the plan to evolve.

  • Why is the picture of the flash banner or video of the flash player showing only a white space, and when I click on it, it plays only the sound, but no picture?

    On other browsers the videos are playing. But in firefox4 I don't see the video at all. But if I click in the center of the white space the video starts to play so I hear the sound.
    Since this was the case I upgraded all my plugins and yet no change.

  • Remove white space and indent code in Dreamweaver CS5

    Ive inherited some code which has loads of randomly placed spaces and line breaks. With Dreamweaver CS5 is it possible to clean up the code so its nicely indent like this?:
    <div>
         <div>
              <div>
              </div>
         </div>
    </div>

    Yes, you can have Dreamweaver indent your code by going to the "Format Source Code" button on the toolbar and selecting "Apply Source Formatting".
    You can edit the way that your text is formatted in Preferences > Code Format

    Just because something is created in DW CS3 doesn't mean it's
    not a
    disaster, any more than using DeWalt power tools guarantees
    that my
    carpentry won't be a complete mess. The software is not a
    replacement for
    skills. It is a tool; your workflow and understanding of HTML
    and CSS is
    what allows you to use DW effectively.
    So why did I call this page a disaster? When I see all that
    extra markup,
    spans, and inline tags, I shudder. It's way too hard to
    troubleshoot. You're
    not doing nearly enough with descendant selectors; instead,
    most of your
    code is inline, despite a huge CSS file.
    Just one example: individual li tags with div align="center"
    inside of them.
    Way overkill. If you're centering all the li text in a given
    list, control
    it with CSS and kill all that extra markup.
    E.g.
    .MenuBarHorizontal li { text-align:center; }
    In fact, if all there is in that .MenuBarHorizontal is the
    list, you don't
    even need to specify the list in the CSS. Just do:
    .MenuBarHorizontal { text-align:center; }
    Now you don't need div tags inside your li at all.
    And if all of those a tags in that menu are going to be
    .style16 class,
    don't specify it on each link. In fact, don't even have a
    .style 16 class.
    Heck, since it's just specifying font size, you don't need to
    target the a
    tag at all. Just add font-size:x-small; to the
    .MenuBarHorizontal ruleset I
    gave you above.
    The above are just examples from a quick glance at your code.
    On the whole,
    your markup and approach to styles are largely wasting the
    power and point
    of CSS.
    In addition, several styles spanned onto one line of text...
    a sure sign
    that either you are using far too many styles to make design
    sense, or else
    you've got styles that overlap each other.
    Here's my advice: Until you get a better handle on CSS, don't
    style things
    as you go. Forget styles altogether at the start. Create a
    very clean HTML
    markup and put ID and class selectors on things you know will
    need them.
    Preferably, place the HTML elements in the order you would
    want your page
    read if styling did not even exist, nesting elements where
    necessary.
    After you have created all the HTML structure, then go back
    and style the
    elements via CSS only. You will end up with less page weight
    and far cleaner
    code to decipher, not simply in terms of length but in terms
    of conflicts
    and redundancies.
    If you're really insistent on styling things as you go, at
    least do this:
    don't create a new style every time you want to accomplish
    something. Create
    CSS rules for IDed containers and container classes. Then as
    you go along
    and are about to create a style, ask yourself where you are
    and what all
    this new rule needs to apply to. Specify the rule there,
    under the selector
    you've already created. Then you won't have .style1 -
    .style16 like you do
    now, and you won't have all that inline mess of code to sort
    through.
    Finally - as you create your CSS, discipline yourself to
    avoid style spans.
    They are necessary on the odd occasion, but very rarely.
    Think semantically
    (i.e. purpose of the style point you're making at a given
    time).
    For example, if you're tempted to create a span in order to
    put something in
    bold red, ask yourself: "Why?" Generally, it means you want
    to place special
    emphasis or strength on that. Well, in that case you don't
    need a span. You
    need to be using the proper tag, such as <em>
    (emphasis) or <strong>. Then
    you can style that tag in CSS. That way, what you have in
    your page actually
    makes sense apart from the style, and as a bonus you can
    apply or edit your
    style easily.

    unchecked the sticky footer in page properties on both the master page and the content page itself.
    Here's a link to one of my pages.  http://www.ueonline.com/rohs-info.html
    This page has very little content and you can see the white space.
    Any help is appreciated.

    This may be a little dated for a reply, and I'm not 100% sure your issue is the same as mine, but I discovered that unchecking the sticky footer option in site properties solved the problem. I should note that the website I was building for a client was über simple, and while disabling that function solved the headache in my own project, it may incur unwanted results in others, depending on the complexity.

  • Customer's PDFs look fine until "white space" is cut off

    We've got a commercial customer using InDesign CS2 and Distiller 7 that is having issues with the bottoms of their pages getting cut off when our RIPs (ECRM) delete the "white space" around their pages. In some cases (but not all), removing the white space also seems to be taking off the bottom two or three rows of pixels.
    The PDFs look fine when they arrive, but once the RIPs get them, the bottom of the page gets cut off (sometimes).
    I can actually see which pages are going to cut off by using the Acrobat crop command and telling it to "Remove White Margins."
    They're the only customers we have (and we have dozens) that are having this problem. What can I do to help them fix it?
    Here is the file as they've sent it. Standard white margin around the page and no oddball crop or art boxes.
    When I check the "Remove White Margins" box, however, this is what happens (and it appears that's what our RIPs are doing, too, as the results from the RIPs mirror this.
    It's difficult to see in the small preview here, but Acrobat is now cropping off the bottom of the image (not just white space). Question is, how do we stop Acrobat from identifying this text/image as white space and allowing it to be removed?

    I decided to take Jerrold's advice and converted the pdf to a jpeg to see if borderless printing was possible with a picture. Before printing I selected 'Scale to Fit' then 'Fill Entire Paper' and it worked! It printed the entire page including the 1cm at the bottom that was previously cut off.
    So bascially with this HP printer if I want to print PDF's without leaving a 1cm gap at the bottom of the page, I first need to open the PDF in Preview, Save as jpeg, then print using the settings above.
    A little annoying but at least it's a solution! Thanks everyone for your help!

  • Flash Player Not Displaying Only White Space

    I have a WP 3.0.2 site. When I try to embed a swf file I have uploaded, all I get to show up, in either a post or a page, is a white area the size of the height & width paramaters. In order to play the flash video, I need to  right click and select "play" from the menu so watch the movie.
    I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong or why there are not play, pause stop, controls showing up and why the video preview image does not show up either
    I am pulling my hair out over this one.surprised
    NOTE; The WP SWFObject Plug-ins do not help with this. I have tried many of them to no avail.

    </OBJECT>

    Thanks for your help. I have tried something new and here is what I have:
    http://idaho-humanrightsed.org/lesson-video/GYL-L1-E.html
    You have to right-click on the white space and select PLAY from the menu to get it to play
    Is there a way to get a player to disply with a background image so it is more inturitive.We do not have the source code to edit the swf files so we have to work with these as they are.
    Thanks!

  • InDesign 2.0: White Space Around Pages Disappeared

    I'm having a really frustrating issue with a document I've been creating in the same way for years. I usually use the whitespace around the pages in InDesign 2.0 to work on my graphics, but this morning I accidentally hit some mysterious shortcut that made the white space (and all my graphics) disappear (the are is now grey) I've been searching and searching the help section and the internet for a solution, but I'm stumped and running way behind on this project. Anyone know how to get that white space back? Thanks.

    Look at the last tool in the toolbox. This toggles between normal mode viewing the pasteboard, guides and other stuff,
    and the preview mode. As Dave says, the keyboard shortcut into and out of preview (which you obviously hit) is W, but if
    you use the toolbox button you will also be able to select a preview showing the bleed area and slug area as well.

  • When open some websites show white space why?

    On Japanese or American websites when I visit website it shows white space and few text.
    How I could solve this problem?

    Thank you

    Hello,
    '''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
    ''(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)''
    If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item:<br>
    [[Image:FirefoxSafeMode|width=520]]<br><br>
    If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
    * On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode'' <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
    ''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
    [[Image:Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win]]
    '''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
    ''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
    When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.
    Thank you.

  • White spaces in bind variables

    While calling a Report(based on sql with a bind variable) from a Form and passing a value with white space to the bind variable gives the following error:-
    Error: An unexpected error occurred: ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error (WWV-16016)
    Also, attempting to translate white spaces is not helpful for bind variable.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Thanks for you replay Reddi,
      Let me explain the scenario: The scenario is RFC --> XI  --> JDBC, one of the element of the FM sometimes could be have the value "      ", when this occurrs in the SXMB_MONI TC I see the value null in the element, that is the tag is <Element />, in this case I need to preserve this white space in the element. The message could be something like this:
    <root>
      <element1>value 1</element1>
      <element2>value 2</element2>
      <element3>      </element3>
    </root>
    but I see the message in this form:
    <root>
      <element1>value 1</element1>
      <element2>value 2</element2>
      <element3 />
    </root>
    In the message mapping tool I assign the string value "      " and the problem still the same.
      Any Idea?

  • How do I remove the white space when importing a site from Flash?

    Okay, so I've dragged and dropped my created Flash site into Dreamweaver. One problem though, when I view it in a web browser (any web browser), it displays the site fine, however with a huge white space to the side of it. You'll see what I mean in this screenshot:
    What can I do then to remove that white space and make the site fill up the whole web browser? I've tried resizing it using a number of ways, but cannot seem to get it right.
    Thanks.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

    You can do two things:
    1) Change the width of the container to 100%;  OR
    2) Post a link to your test page here (not the code nor picture) so that we can see ourselves what your code looks like.

  • Extra White Space Around Header Graphic & NavBar

    I have a header graphic and Navigation Bar (rollover images)
    positioned inside a table. Unfortunately, there is about 1-2 pixels
    of white space on the left, right, and top of the header graphic.
    Same with the NavBar--there's 1-2 pixels of white space on the
    edges (left & right sides). By default, cell padding for the
    table is set to zero. If cell padding is set to zero, why am I
    seeing white space between the edge of the graphic and the edge of
    the table?
    You can see what I'm referring to here:

    Personally, I thought that the white border was a feature,
    but... In
    addition to the cellpadding, add cellspacing:
    <table width="780" border="0" align="center"
    cellpadding="0"
    cellspacing="0" bordercolor="#000000" bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
