White Squares instead of Application Icons in Switch Applications

My "Switch Applications" (Command-Tab) has started sporadically showing a white square instead of one of the icons for the applications I have open. I can still click through to them, but it is a little disconcerting.
No particular application seems to be involved more than the others - Firefox, Finder, iTunes, and a Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client have all done this at one time or another today.
This may be related with the other problem that arose today: some application sub-windows sometimes appear simply as white window. (I mention this here because it may be relevant, but this problem has a separate thread: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=13094719#13094719)
Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thank you.

Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Missing application icons for many applications

After a failed upgrade to kde 4.3 beta through KDEmod I removed all of the KDEmod stuff and reinstalled arch kde 4.2. But now many applications are missing their icons. Anybody has an idea on how to fix this issue? Thanks
P.S. I already tried removing all of the configuration files and already removed every last trace of kdemod stuff.

Hey all, i got the same strange behavior after trying to update to kdemod unstable 4.3 nad move back to kdemod stable.
After unsuccessfully trying to fix it with the given hints i managed to get "all" icons back.
    What i did:
Removing the oxgen icon pakage: pacman -Rd kdemod-kdebase-runtime-icons
After that the oxygen icon dir was still there, so i moved it to get a fresh dir after reinstalling the above removed pakage.
    cd /usr/share/icons/
    mv oxygen oxygen_old
Removing the hicolor icon theme: pacman -Rd hicolor-icon-theme
After that you get a funny looking desktop, cause all icons are gone.. the questionmark icon too.
Then i cleared my pkg cache: pacman -Scc
After that i reinstalled the above removed pakages.
    pacman -S kdemod-kdebase-runtime-icons
    pacman -S hicolor-icon-theme
Now all my icons are back without one exception.. the settings icon in the kde menu.. it shows the icon from the monochrome icon theme.. strange but i can live with it.
Hop this helps some of you
    cheers

  • Edge CC 2014.1 action panel shows white square (was: Open actions, white square only..)

Hi there, I've had a new update of edge animate.. When i click on "open actions" i now only see a white square instead of the actions window. Does anybody know how can i fix this?

    Hi,
Please try recreating the edge animate preferences,
Quit Edge Animate.Mac OS: In the Finder, navigate to /Users/Your User Name/Library/Preferences/Adobe.
Rename the Edge Animate folder to, for example, Old Edge Animate.
Please open edge animate and try again.

Gotcha... But actually its limited to 9 icons in the L theme as the Profiles icon is always present. From that screen hit the Menu key to display the bigger list of icons. Arange them so the first 9 icons are the ones you want to see on the L theme.

  • My illustrator CS3 saved file icon shows as a blank white square?

This is really odd. I store all my AI files in one folder. When I first open the folder, the lovely orange AI icons representing each file all change to white squares (actually they're in portrait or landscape view depending on how the file was saved). If I then drag one of these white .ai files onto the desktop, the icon very briefly appears again then changes back to the white square. Same thing happens when I drag the file back into its folder. The files open and close normally, and save normally. If I do a 'get info' on them they show up as normal .ai files. It seems as if something is 'overriding' the icon. My old illustrator CS files all show the old CS icon. I know it's not an earth-shattering problem, but I'd really like to solve it. Can you help?

    Hi Simon,
First, "Get Info" on your Illustrator application. If it's not named "Illustrator.app", add the ".app" to the name.
If that doesn't solve it, it's probably be a LaunchServices issue. Rebuild your LaunchServices database, either with OnyX orLaunch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line:
    Code:
    <pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/\Frameworks/LaunchServi ces.framework/Support/lsregister \-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • New Added Applications Icons = White "Crossed out" symbol...

This is a bit of a minor annoyance, but I wanted to see how the community was dealing with this....
I find it helpful to have an Alias for "Applications" in my dock -- to the right of the divider. I like to sort it by "Most recently added", so that I'll have the newest application on top of the stack. I realize that the applications have the "universal symbol for 'not'" -- a generic mac icon with a white crossed-out symbol -- because the app hasn't been permissioned yet. i.e. I copied it to the Applications folder but just didn't run it yet. After I run it, I drag the icon out of Applications and then back in the folder and it changes to the real icon.
This is a true first world problem -- but I just wanted to see if anyone else deals with this and how you work your way around it. (Not such a big deal to just drag the icon and add it back. It's just annoying and looks dumb.) Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

For me, the crossed-out icon disappears once I've launched the application once and answered yes to the warning whether I want to launch an application that has been downloaded from the internet.
I don't know if trashing the Dock preferences would help?

  • IMovie icon becomes a white square in the Dock

Hello, I been having an issue with the iMovie icon on my Dock... It sounds something like the question raised here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=303666&tstart=0
Although in my case, only the iMovie icon is affected, and it doesn't disappear. Basically, the Icon is replaced with a white square, and restarting doesn't seem to help. Occasionally when I restart, the icon comes back, but after a few minutes it becomes a white square again.
I have a screen shot you can view here:
    http://www.ryanflannery.net/pics/dock.png
The iMovie icon appears between the iPhoto and iDVD icons.
I've tried killing my dock.plist file, and shortly after the problem occurs again. This problem does not occur in any other account on this laptop.
    15" Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

My friends old iBook does the same thing. I don't know if it has something to do with the fact that it can barely handle OS X. His does the same thing, but always on the same 3 icons (Address Book, Internet Explorer and Powerpoint) and the icon loads more than half way.
    I haven't found a fix yet either

  • ITunes 10.0.7.21 shows a white box instead of artwork for most of my albums.  Many of these are albums I purchased on itunes.  Also when I hit get album art it deleted the artwork it already had form many albums and says it cant find it.

    OS is Windows 7
I updated iTunes the other day and I decided to run "get album art" and instead of finding artwork, it made some of the artwork I already had show up as white squares, or disapear entirely.  The ones that are white squares show up under the get info, but not in itunes.  I did click in view for show al artwork, no luck.  Many of these albums I bought from iTunes.  The ones that the artwork was deleted some albums I can buy on iTunes, but already owned, and iTunes found the artwork before, but now cannot.  Some are albums that I spent many hours finding and adding the artwork myself.  I am very frustrated.  I cannot find the time to manually install artwork for thousands of songs.
My work computer is Windows 8, so I really don't want to hear windows vs OSX argument.  My company won't switch to mac because you like it better, so I just need a solution to my issue.  iTunes it has always worked better for me on my work PC than my macBook, I dont know why, but I don't take two laptops with me when I travel so I have my iTunes library on the PC that has to come with me.  This is the first time an update has screwed things up for me.

Well my first guess was wrong. The line that failed is the one that writes out the image to disk. I've not revisited the code for that script for ages, but it seems I did add in an extra test for missing files a little while later, then forgot to upload the change. I can reproduce the error message if I deliberately rename a file to confuse iTunes so that seems the most likely reason for your problem with the script. I've uploaded a new build of CreateFolderArt which should work better.
See FindTracks for a tool to repair broken links. You should probably get that issue fixed first.
I know what SPSS stands for but that is all I know about it.

  • Publishing: white screen instead of slides

    hi.
i'm using captivate for recording and publishing
presentations (lasting one hour each, incl. audio and slides). this
time i was using the "application"-version as i was only having
    .pdf for the presentation.
previewing the project, the recorded staff works, all slides
are shown. but when publishing them to an .exe- or a flash-file,
around half-time there are no more slides but a white screen
instead, the audio continues. i tried it several times, always with
    the same result.
for a better understanding, here an explication on the
    structure of my project:
    - only 1 "slide" (1 hour)
    - 1 audio bar (1 hour)
    - 1 loong bar called "entry" (i hope that's the right
translation, i'm using the german version) storing the slide
    changes
any ideas how to get an .exe- and/or a flash-file showing the
slides till the end instead of switching to those nasty white
    (empty) slides?
thanks a lot for your help!
    greets :)

    Hi,
I am having a similar problem to this in a project created in
    Captivate 3.
My project is an interactive training app, it has about 70
slides in all, a combination of static slides with click boxes and
some animation slides (all captured through Captivate).
When I first created and published it as an exe there was no
problem but after a full reinstall of Windows I now have the white
screen problem when viewing the published exe.
It only occurs on slides with animation on them and only
occurs on my computer, if I test them on another they work fine.
The slide plays fine when using "preview | play this slide" but not
if I use the other preview options or publish to exe. In those case
I get the white screen and nothing else on the slides with
    animation in them.
Is there any posibility this could be related to the version
of Flash Player I am running?
Any advice or hints would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Andy

  • White square is shown when on cam using aMsn AND Mercury

Lately i've had some trouble going on webcam to people over aMSN and Mercury Messenger (the only Mac Cam/MSN apps I use). I can see myself just fine, but all the contact can see is a blank, white square in the space where i'm meant to be. I thought that it might just be the one messenger service, but the fact it happens on both pieces of software is making me think that it's to do with iSight.
Could anybody please recommend what I should do?
    Thanks a lot.

    Welcome to Discussions, The60ftOctopus
You can use the suggestions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 to see whether iSight is causing your problem. Be sure to try with more than one user account and with some other apps, too:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage7.html
If your iSight works properly with any app in any user account you test, iSight is NOT the cause.
If you can eliminate iSight as the source of your trouble, you will need to either switch to other ways of communicating as Defcom suggests or troubleshoot other system elements that might be causing the problem. Here are a couple of things you can consider if you don't get better suggestions here:
    (1) Sometimes a restart restores function on internet connected applications. Shut down everything and restart your entire system including modem, router, and Mac in that order. To eliminate possible communication hardware problems, *allow self-test to complete on each device before starting the next*.
    (2) If you updated or installed any software immediately before the problem began, check their websites to see if there are known issues with your system configuration or installation. If not, carefully following the developers' instructions, reinstall any possible software cause, repair permissions, and try again.
If you find conflicting software, follow the instructions and uninstall to see if removing it will restore proper function to your favored communications apps.
    (3) Check the dedicated aMSN and Mercury Messenger fora to see if your problem has already been solved by other users who post there.
