  • How do I back up my MacBook Pro from an external hard drive if my macbook won't boot up from the white start up screen? HELP!

I went to the Genius Bar a week ago, and the guy helping me there was nice enough to help me save some money by telling me I could replace the bad hard drive my MacBook Pro had by myself. I bought everything I needed (hard drive, screws, external hard drive) and my computer won't boot past the white start up screen. It doesn't even show the Apple sign at the start up screen. How do I back up my computer so I can save all my music, school files, etc.? Could really use someone's advice on what to do! Thanks!

Ok, to be sure I understand what's going on. You were able to boot the Macbook from the existing "damaged" internal drive, and it has been backed up to the internal.
If that is correct, your internal drive is working. Just to be sure, try booting with the R key down. Then run Disk Utility to repair the internal drive. That drive may in fact be useable.
You should be aware that you cannot boot the MBP from a Time Machine back up.
Please post back so I am sure I am understanding the situation.

  • When I turn on my iMac the white start up screen appears but then it goes onto a black screen

When I turn on my iMac, the white start up screen comes on with the noise. Then when it's supposed to show my accounts the screen goes black but I can still use the mouse?

  • IMac stuck on white start-up screen

My 27" iMac is stuck on the white start-up screen. I've tried turning it off and on, pressing p, q, shift, command and nothing will work. It never gets passed the white screen and the start-up chime. After trying to unplug everything, pressing p, q, shift, command, the screen turned blue. Any ideas?

Please read and methodically follow the steps Apple recommends in Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup located at http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570

  • IMac stuck at white start up screen with revolving gray wheel. What to do?

My iMac is stuck at white start up screen.  I have been having problems
With iMac since installing snow leopard.  The unplug/replug option
    Doesn't help. Any suggestions?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • My screen goes blank after I see the white start up screen

My screen goes blank after I see the white start up screen

What kind of iMac do you have?  A PowerPC G3, G4, G5, or an Intel-based iMac?  What OS are you using?  OS 9, OS 10.2.x Jaguar, 10.3.x Panther, 10.4.x Tiger, 10.5.x Leopard, 10.6.x Snow Leopard, 10.7.x Lion, 10.8.x Mountain?
This particular forum is for older PowerPC G3, G4, G5 iMacs running OS 10.5.8 or older.  If your iMac was made after 2006, then you have an Intel-based iMac.
That being said, here are a few tips to try:
    Option 1
Restart the computer while holding down the Option key.  This will tell the computer to look for bootable drives.  If it finds your normal startup disk, select let, then click the right pointing arrow to boot up the computer.  Now open up System Preferences> System> and select your normal Startup OS as the default startup disk.
    Option 2
Reset your PRAM.  Press and hold down the Command Option P R keys while starting your computer.  You will hear the startup chime.  continue holding down those keys until you hear the startup chime a second time.  Release the keys.  If the computer restarts, you will need to reset your Date and Time.  It might be time to replace your PRAM battery.
    Option 3
Reset the SMC by removing all cables (USB, Firewire, Ethernet, Modem, Power cord) from the back of your computer.  Let it sit for one minute.  Press and hold the power on button on the back of the iMac while plugging in the power cord.  Release the power on button.  Count to five, the press the power on button again.
    Option 4
Place your original, came with the iMac when purchased install disk, into the slot on the iMac, press and hold the C key while pressing the power on button on the back of the computer.  (If you have upgraded your OS from when you purchased your iMac, example your iMac came with OS 10.3 installed, and you're now using OS 10.5, then use the OS 10.5 Retail Install disk that you had used to upgrade your OS instead of the original, came with the iMac disk.)
Continue holding the C key until you see the OS starting to load.  DO NOT do an OS installation.  At the top Menu bar, select Utilities or Utility, and pull down to Disk Utility.  On the left side of the window that opens, select your normal OS drive.  Click First Aid at the top middle of the window if it isn't already selected.  Click Repair Disk from the lower right area of the window.  When that is done, click Repair Permissions to the left of the Repair Disk button you clicked earlier.
When that is done, quit Disk Utility.  From the top Menu bar (I think its under Utilities) select the Start Up Manager, and choose your normal boot volume as the startup disk.  Restart the computer.  If successful, and you've rebooted from your normal startup disk, eject the install DVD/CD, and you're good to go.
    Good luck.

  • Can't get past white start up screen

Last night my computer crashed, and displayed a blank white screen, so I held in the power on button to restart and after that I have been unable to get past the blank white screen after the apple logo appears. 10 minutes ago however after having the computer unplugged for two hours, I decided to try again, this time it managed to start up abielt slooooowly, but I managed to open up disk utility and use the first aid and repair hard disk and I had enough time to read that something was wrong with OSX and mounting, blah blah blah,  already my memory is getting blurry as it all happened so fast as it then crashed again. The last thing I remember downloading was firefox's latest update, has anyone any ideas on what I can do? Thanks in advance

managed to begin restoring of the system through holding down the option button and using time capsule, the screen keeps flickering and if allowed to sleep crashes, this is now the third try, screen flickering and not able to read clearly how much time nor percentage done, seems to be something connected with display, or video drives maybe it is even the flash thing, as I vaguely remember udating adobe flash software also the day before I will keep posting

  • Installed 10.4.8 and now only white start-up screen

    Hi,
I used the software updater and installed the new 10.4.8 update and when it restarted, the computer is stuck on the white screen. Has this happened to anyone else? Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get into the computer?
    thanks!

the first time after installing, the start up takes 3 minutes or more and then it restarts suddenly by it self....on purpose..
now did you let it finish by it self?
Ok....many of us also had blank screen problems with 10.4.7 and here is how we got rid of it:
push the start up button and immediatly after press down all these four keys:
    option (alt) + command (apple key) + p + r
Then you should start up fine... BUT to avoud having to do this all the time you have to do a manual fix:
In system preferences, togle the screen settings away from the standard setting to some other setting, and then back again.
Voila.. so far it seems to work. The explanation is, that some default setting for the screen somehow got lost.
    But the above fixes...fixes that
IF... next time you still get a blank screen. Turn it off by holding down the start button for 5 sec. Try Start up from the original apple dvd (insert the dvd and hold down the "c" key under start up). When the loading is over - DONT START the software install but under tools choose start-up disk, and choose the hard disk system folder. Then simply choose restart.
If you still have trouble.. you need to make a new software installation of Mac OSX.. you can choose the archive and install to save all your personal settings and files from your present home.
    sincerely...peter

  • I installed Lion but now my Macbook won't go past the start-up screen. Help!

I installed Mac OS X Lion today and it downloaded and installed fine but when it restarted it went to the white start up screen with the grey apple logo and the wheel kept going around for two hours. I held the power button and my macbook went off so I pushed it again and it went on, again staying at the start up screen for half an hour. I restarted it again and held the option button to boot to recovery. I then repaired the permissions and the disk drive and then reinstalled Mac OS X Lion. This time the installation took around 4 hours to complete and then restarted. It again went to the white start up screen and the grey wheel has now been going around for the last hour! What can I do? I haven't backed up my files and would still like to keep them. Thanks.

    Hey Lyssa
I don't have a back up but I'm not to worried about that as it's my traveling computer and I only use it for the web and some word processing.
I don't have the disks with me right now as I'm away from home. I'm not sure what I had updated, I think there was a lot because I hadn't don't it in a long time.
If I can start it in safe mode what should I do?
    Thanks.

  • Macbook freezes at Start Up screen/Will not boot

I have a 13" MacBook purchased almost two years ago. The computer recently froze completely. I tried to restarted the computer but it would just go to the white start up screen (w/ Apple logo) over and over again. I turned it off completely and let it sit for a hour or so while it was plugged in. Now when I turn on the computer it will not turn on - it makes the Apple chime and goes to the white start up screen with grey logo.
Is there anything trouble shooting I can do to try and resolve this problem?

What operating system are you running please?

  • Cannot start up my computer. Sits at start up screen.

About a month ago I was moving a bunch of songs onto my computer. I filled up the disk space. So I decided to delete some songs to clear up space while I moved other files onto a server. Doing this made my computer sit there with the spinning color wheel. I had to manually restart. Upon re log(taking an hour and a half to do so) my computer was so slow I couldn't accomplish anything. It wouldn't let me delete files or pretty much do anything. I remote logged in from another computer, assuming the low space was the issue and deleted files that way. It didn't fix the problem and the slow issue eventually got so bad I couldn't even attempt to do anything. I ended up doing a complete erase and install of the operating system and the hard drive. Everything worked fine until today.
Today I was installing Adobe CS3. It got to step one and sat there. I canceled the installation and proceeded to reattempt it. My computer froze (although I could still move my mouse I just couldn't click anything). I manually restarted and now I cant get it to restart into OSX. I tried a safe boot and let it go for an hour and a half. If got to the blue log in screen and just continued to sit there. I popped the OSX install disk in and restarted and it just sits there at the white start up screen with the apple.
How can I get it to boot up, or even boot of the install disk?

    Hello,
When you try to boot from the install disk are you holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting the restore disk all at the same time? Shut down your Mac. Hold down the C key, press the power button and insert the disk all at the same time, keep holding down the C key until you see the Apple logo. (Hopefully you'll get this far)... an Installer window will open, select English. From the Menu Bar select Utilities/Disk Utility. When the DU window opens, select MacintoshHD 10.4.x, select the FirstAid button, then click Verify. IF DU reports errors, click Repair. When that is done, Repair Disk Permissions. While you have DU open, look down at the bottom of that window where it says: Capacity and Available. It's a good idea not never allow your available disk space to fall below 15% of the total drive. Now, from the Menu Bar, click Utilities/Startup Disk and select MacintoshHD 10.4.x and click Restart.
If it won't boot to the desktop perhaps you have another Mac or a friend with a compatible Mac that can run Target Disk Mode so you can access and transfer files so you can free up disk space. How to Use Firewire Target Disk Mode
Also, Adobe CS3 minimum requirements for Mac:
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/systemreqs/ Your profile indicates you are running Tiger 10.4.6. If your profile is correct, then you can't install A CS3 until you update to 10.4.11 and you can't do that until you free up disk space. If your profile is outdated, please click the My Settings over on right and update your profile. Thanks!

Backup in case your disk is failing.
Start up in Safe Mode;  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204?viewlocale=en_US
If it boots reliably in Safe Mode then it is probably a software issue.
    Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
Boot in Recovery Mode.  (Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.)  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left system disk icon.  Does S.M.A.R.T. report “Verified”?  If not the disk is failing and will need to be replaced.  Click on the icon underneath and indented to the right, usually called “Macintosh HD”.  Repair Disk.  It should finish normally with a green OK message.  If it does not try to repair it again.
If it will not finish with the green OK message then use Disk Utility to erase the drive and then reinstall OS X.  (Be sure you have a backup before erasing the disk.  Post back if you need instructions on how to do that.)
If it repaired all errors and is still not booting normally, reinstall OS X.
If it is still sick after all these steps then the disk probably needs to be replaced.  You can do that inexpensively and fairly easily yourself or take it to an Apple store for them to do it for you at a higher cost.  If it is still under warranty or AppleCare have Apple do it for you for free.  Post back if you need instructions on replacing the disk.  You may want to have Apple check the health of the system and disk before replacing it yourself.
