White vs. Black MacBook: Price?

I had a friend who is considering switching ask be why the Black MacBooks were more expensive than their white counterparts. I naturally assumed he just missed something in the specs that would justify its extra cost. However, after reading through the tech specs, all I could find is that the Black MacBook has 80Gb of hard disk space standard compared to the White MacBook's 60.
I figure that I am missing something obvious, but I would greatly appreciate someone pointing out to me why the Black MacBooks cost more.
Thanks, Matthew.

Personally I prefer having a white one. Not only is the Black one more exensive, but it looks just the same as every other Laptop on the market (you will struggle to find a laptop without any black on it apart from an apple one). I just think that the white one is more, well, Apple.
Also, I would rather take the risk of having the yellowing colour then the whole black surface flaking, like alot of people are saying.
However, at the end of the day it depends on which one you prefer. Apparently they also used some special material on the black one which is more expensive.
I just feel that a different colour and different materials is justified in an extra $150 (£128 here in england).

  • White vs black macbooks (question about the material)

Hi, I'm trying to buy my first mac and I am really excited. But I'm not sure if I should get the black or the white macbook (same specs). Any advice is appreciated.
I've heard a lot about how the new Black Macbooks have a different finish than the white ones - matte compared to the glossy finish. In layman's terms, basically all I have learnt is that the black ones have a lot of stains on them. But I would think that the white ones get dirty pretty fast. Also I've read some reviews where some folks have said that the black has a different keyboard ... I tried both of them out at an Apple store and didn't notice much of a different.
Is there really that much of a difference between the two colors? If there isn't, I'd like to get the Black one just cuz it won't get dirty that quickly.
Any thoughts? Thanks for your time

I just went through the same dilemna. I had to decide whether paying $200 more for 40GB more of hard drive space and the black color. (The 40 GB is only worth $75 so you are paying $125 for the black color.) I ended up choosing the black. Sure, it smudges easily, however, that is really easy to clean. As for the scratches, once they are in the white ones, they are pretty much there for good. The black ones, you have a great chance of buffing them out if it is just a surface scratch.
I didn't need the 40GB of space, however, the black looks really cool, classy and professional and is easier to keep clean. Plus it accentuates the glowing apple far better than the white one. It really sounds like you want the black, so GO FOR IT!

  • Black Macbook 13", New Keyboard?

    Hello,
Where can I get a new top cover (I need to replace the keyboard) for my 13" Black Macbook?
Is it possible to fit a white Macbook keyboard? I'd assume so, but am worried there might be some cunning differences to prevent my doing so...

I cannot be certain if there are enough differences between the white and black Macbook keyboards for it not to work, but I recently replaced my white Macbook's keyboard/topcase from a version 1 keyboard (old style with open apple symbol on command key) accidentally to a version 2 keyboard (no open apple symbol and function keys rearranged). The eBay seller was told to send me a version 1 keyboard but sent me a version 2 anyway and it works quite well even though the new keyboard is supposedly from a 2008 Macbook as opposed to my mid 2007 Macbook. Perhaps its more to do with the OS recognizing the hardware than whether the hardware is compatible with the logic board if that makes any sense. I have a feeling pretty much any white/black Macbook keyboard will work with any white/black Macbook...but that's only a hunch.
As for where to get one...eBay sellers list them daily for a range of prices. Mine was used but in great condition for $30 and free shipping, but some sell new ones for maybe $20 more. Just gotta look around.

  • New MacBook OR Black MacBook

I was about to buy my first mac(black macbook) when i heard the new ones were launched(in India they arrive after 3 weeks from now). I am really confused to take a call on if i should go with my original plan of getting the black or wait for a month and get the all new one which will be a lil. more expensive.
Looking for some opinions and feedback from you guys.
    Thanks.

Take a close look at the specs for both and see if there's anything in the new MacBook that you really need. Pay close attention to the CPU (same in both), RAM (same in both), no Firewire in the new MacBook, no trackpad button if you prefer to have one (like I do, but now I use an HP Bluetooth mouse most of the time so it's less of a problem for me), hard drive and RAM can easily be upgraded. They say the LED screen is better than the LCD but I am reserving judgement until I can see one in use outside of a showroom. The cost of the new MacBook alone would be enough to put me off, and it only comes in one colour - boring metallic grey. The Intel X3100 graphics set in the white and black MacBook models is actually very capable, and can run a number of recent games quite well, just don't expect to be running Oblivion at 1920x1440 with full-scene anti-aliasing
Though the CPU clock speed and the Ram "amount" are the same, the two are actually different.
The CPU of the AL has a 1066 front side bus and the Ram is DDR3 1066 RAM
Though the X3100 graphics card is "capable" the newer 9400 in benchmark testing got framerates of 30+ compared to only around 8 frames on the previous MacBooks.
The only nice thing about the LED screens in my opinion is faster on and less power consuming. I saw a new MacBook today and I didn't see any of the contrast/ugliness that others have posted, but I'm not overly critical of such things in general and of course the showroom can be quite misleading.
If you have the money to spend and don't need Firewire, I would get the AL MacBook personally. The Black MacBook of course will not disappoint it's an awesome machine.
I thought the new trackpad was quite smart personally. It was very natural to click at the bottom as if the button was really there, though I have become more a tap to click kind of person. The new gestures for the trackpad are pure genius in my opinion as well. The four finger app switcher is cool.
But I only played with it for like 20 minutes.
    Good luck.

  • Black MacBook with white cables?

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I am really curious if apple has an explanation as to why they shipped the Black MacBooks with white cables and a white remote.

  • Black MacBook vs. White MacBook

I have recently been debating which MacBook to get. The White MacBook or the Black MacBook. Here are the specs for both MacBook's:
    2.0GHz Intel Core Duo
    1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x512
    100GB Serial ATA drive
    AppleCare Protection Plan for MacBook/iBook - Auto-enroll
How come the White MacBook was $1,798.00 and the Black MacBook was $1,948.00. This might sound a little ignorant, but would they both perform the same, or does it just cost $100+ more for black paint?!

Here's another way to save some money or justify the price of the black Macbook.
I ordered a Macbook from Amazon.com (white -- I don't care about the color and white is fine with me). Amazon has a $100 rebate and they don't charge tax, nor do they charge for 2-day shipping if you sign up for a free 3 month trial of Amazon "Prime". I ordered mine Monday and it arrived Wednesday.
I spent $150 for 2 Gb memory and another $160 for a 120 Gb hard drive from Newegg.com. Swapped them in myself and I have a nicely configured Macbook for roughly $1500. Do what I did and get the black one and it only costs you $1700. Plus you have an extra 80Gb hard drive you can buy an enclosure for to use as a backup.
Make sure you order the right hard drive for the Macbook! It takes a Serial ATA connector, not an ATA connector. There are fewer SATAs available and they are more expensive.
    Good luck

  • I bought a macbook pro retina ME665 in Dubai, and 3 month later its display stopped working properly.some white lines appeared on it and display itself became white and black. Can anybody suggest what should I do to fix this problem?

In October 2013 I was on Vacationin Dubai and bought there Macbook pro retina ME665. I returned to Kyrgystan (home town) and for New Year I was away for a week. When I came back i found that the dispaly of my laptop became white and black, some lines appeared on it. Everybody in my family told me that no one has dropped my laptop or done anything that can cause this problem. there is no any service provider of apple in my country. WIl, the international warranty cover this case? I bought this laptop not from apple store, but in a simple store and I lost reciept.

  • Is the Black MacBook any more durable than the white version.

The way I have it figured, a black shelled book is $155.00 more expensive than a comparably custom configured white book when ordered online. I like the black better, but maybe not 150+ dollars better. Any tangible advantage to getting a black model?
    Advice? Opinions?
    Thanks!

I opted for the white first cause it is some kind of Apple's flag and i love to stand from the crowd of dark PCs while at business meetings
Second, I noticed that the Black has troubles with fingerprints and skin oils while the white is not affected.
Last but not least, 150 bucks saved means more RAM or Hard Disk...
I suffered some weeks ago of the discoloration issue, but being in the return-period yet I sent the Mac Book back to Mother Apple and since last week got a new one that so far is perfect... lets cross fingers.
The Black major price is basically a marketing move that seems to pay off for Apple, since I am sure they do not have to pay 150 dollars more to produce any single black unit.

  • Black MacBook showing up white in Finder.

Hello all, I've had a Mac for a little over a year now, so obviously I've only gotten to use Leopard, and I'm uncertain about Tiger, Panther, etc. But whenever I have my computer shown in the sidebar in the Finder, my Black MacBook always shows up as White, and I don't really understand why. No one in my immediate family uses a Mac, so I can't test to see if it shows up Black or White in their Finder.
This is one of those annoyances that you know is really small, but it just bugs you. Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Steve
PS - I know that the Finder has hi-res icons (512x512) located at /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle
Right-click on the bundle and select "Show Package Contents". There's actually a lot of really slick hi-res icons to be found here.
What I'm getting at is I can see all of the Apple portables over the years (including a black MacBook and a white MacBook.) I know it's there but it's not showing the right icon for my computer.

Could be the codes read by that piece of software do not necessarily distinguish between the black and white models - which is only a cosmetic difference. On my various systems the icon for a given item is not even always the same - right now on my main MacBook my USB disk attached to the Airport Extreme router looks like an iMac while the same view from my wife's PowerBook it looks at it should (like a router). If it works I wouldn't worry about it - but you could try a cache cleaner utility to see if that makes any difference - or if you know for such which icon file is being used - copy the black icon file and rename it to take the place of the white icon file.

  • Shared MacBook is shown as White, not Black.

My Mother's and my Girlfriend's MacBooks (Both Black) see themselves (in Devices section of Finder Sidebar) as White, and my MacBook Pro sees them as White too.
I wouldn't ask this if it were not for there being a Black MacBook icon residing in /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/com.apple.macb ook-black.icns
I'm wondering if perhaps this is just at the level of being an "Easter Egg" and there actually isn't a way for a BlackBook to work out (and tell other Macs) whether it should be seen as Black or Not Black, whether by serial number or what (I know that "MacBook2,1" isn't helpful as both models identify themselves as that)?

What versions of OS X are the black macbooks running? The icon is determined by the info that the macbook telling your machine what type of icon to display. Make sure the macbooks are updated to 10.5.2 and see if the problem persists. Good luck...

Keep the temperature down, usually by boosting the lowest default fan speed to help.
Also FBDIMMs on Amazon I have run at 59*C versus the 72*C+ of prior modules so adding less heat into the system.
There are kits you can modify the card's fan and add copper heat sink pipes. You may be fine and not have to buy a new card and continue with the 8800GT.
The X1900 was a huge problem with dust and therefore with heat and making the fans work harder - but never able to cool the interior, so the card had to be removed and dust inside the card's chamber 3-4X per year.
My Mac Pro 1,1 even without the X1900 would warm up the area during winter after 3-4 hours of use - the exhaust on these is very hot. So monitor the temps and fans and I would  install SmcFanControl - I have always had it since 2007 to keep the fans default at 800-900 rpm along with Hardware Monitor (or use another) to monitor all the system sensors.

  • Black Macbook Paint On Keys Flaking

I apologize if this is in the wrong place, but it is my first time posting in these forums and I have yet become acquainted with the layout.
My question has to do with paint peeling on the actual keys of the black macbook. I got my computer in about 2008, and have had it for about 27-28 months. I have had problems with it before, but this one seems to be ongoing and I am worried about the paint fully peeling from the keys and being illegible. The actual paint on the keys has begun to flake, so that the black paint if flaking leaving a patch of white and making it extremely hard to read what the key is. This has happened with the down key more than any, but it also beginning on the "S" and "D" keys. I am unsure if this is something that tends to happen with computers that are used often, because I am a student I use my computer for long hours and do a lot of typing on it, or whether this is a problem with paint on the keyboard and has the ability to be fixed (hopefully for not too expensive a price)
I am posting some pictures below of what has been , thank you very much for any help that you are able to give!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Rose.
I think you are in the right place.
I imagine that what is happening has happened to others. If you have the Applecare extended warranty it's possible that you could claim this under that program. Perhaps Apple might counter that it's fair wear & tear though that shouldn't be the case within the 3 yr extended warranty period.
It is a fairly simple matter to replace individual keys (with some care!) if you can find a discarded keyboard/Macbook of the same type. This might be cheaper than paying for the repair if you don't have the extended warranty.

Nothing but a microfiber cloth and a little water if needed - applied directly to the cloth and never anything sprayed on the machine.
Also, avoid paper products as they are remarkably abrasive.
Although I am sure it works well, I refuse to pay the price for OmniClean. A microfiber cloth gets rid of everything on my MB and I will never have to buy refills or replacements.

  • Finger Grease and Black Macbook

Hey folks! I just bought my first Mac yesterday (a black Macbook), and noticed a bit of a problem and was wondering if there was some solution. It appears as though the grease from my fingers (hey, you can't blame me, I'm a young guy going through puberty haha) is leaving sort of "marks" on both the keys and the mousepad. If I look at the mousepad from any angle, I can clearly see that certain spots and almost "worn," whereas other spots where I don't put my fingers as frequently look fine. Is there any solution to this? Any type of keyboard/mousepad cleaner to try to get rid of these marks? I knew that this would eventually happen, but I didn't expect to see it after only one day of use! Thanks in advance!

hey it happens to the best of us. by paying a little extra for that pretty blackbook, you have to pay the price of trying to keep it clean. dont feel bad, i go through the same experience with my black razor. it is just a question if you are anal about keeping it clean. i have a white macbook and i still clean it after evey time i use it, it is just the way that i am. i was the same way till my ibook died. all i do is get the pledge multi thingy spray that is safe for electronics or endust is fine... and all you do is spray some on a clean undershirt... the soft white kind and while your macbook is off and unplugged, just wipe that baby down. just be sure not to do it to the screen for fear of leaving smudges. but that should work and also keep that smell down that some people complain of with all the grease from you hands. hope it helps!
