White vs. Green Screen

If I want to film something for a video that I'm going to use the ipod silhouette effect in, is it better to film the live action in front of a backlit white background (ie a sheet) or a green screen? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each? Once in FCP, would I use the same technique to create the silhouette for both live action techniques?
Thanks for your help!
Cameron

Well -- green, blue... white...
the key will be in the lighting.
That's really why I suggested doing the research. Backlight yes, so you get NO shadows, but you also need to make sure the coverage is the same across the whole screen. If you are going to key the floor you'll need to worry about that too... and good luck trying to keep the shadows off there.
Again, google Chroma Key and read everything you can.
Now -- here's another thing to think about. If the camera is going to be locked off, you might want to do what's called a difference matte... or difference key. There's a filter for that in AE and I think there's one in FCP too.
What you'll do is set the camera to record a few frames without talent in the SAME lighting conditions and SAME camera set up... focus, iris, etc. Then you can use the clean plate to remove the same images from the one with the talent and you'll get a nice clean key.
Good luck,

  • My ipod caught a colored blue/white/blue-green screen when i have updated it to 6.0

Hello when i have updated my ipod ti the version 6.0 it have bugged so i reboot my ipod and my ipod caught bug now it caught a coloured screen ive tried to restore it but it doesent work.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Shadows on a green screen

    Hello
Recently i saw a clip where the main character was dancing against a white background (i.e. green screen )
curiously there was a black silhouette of the same character kind of mimicking her- like shadow but not in sync. How do you achieve this effect?
    many  thanks,
    Peter

    you need two recordings:
Dance act #1 (could be done in front of an infinite white, or green screen)
Dance act #2.(has to be done in a green screen)
'Color correct' act#1 to be a black silhouette
use this as background for Dance Act #2 ....
=> elaborated effect, can not be accomplished in iMovie, asks for FCPX ... sorry to say...

  • White screen or green screen question

    hi
i have a series of interviews coming up...will shoot 1080.  I like the nice clean look of white for the background. Question is whether to shoot with white backdrop or green screen and key white in post.  Here is my issue: I want to use part of the space (framing screen right) for bullet points, graphics, etc. but i also would like to achieve this look at 2:40 into the video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRK5QVEE8Ng) Clearly, a green screen was used here. I am  wondering if I shot against white could i just use the luma and key out my white background, create my effect with white and moving video then key it back in? Thanks.

Here's my 2 centimes, FWIW.  luma and chroma keys both have plusses and minuses.  Green screen will potentially give you the cleanest key if you follow a few "rules" while shooting.  It's a huge challenge to do good green screen:  large enough set so that you can light the screen absolutely differently than the talent.  You're really lighting two sets-- the talent and the screen.  you ought to be able to turn one off without affecting the other.  You'll need enough distance to avoid bounceback onto the talent. or a magenta backlight to minimize the bounce.  Fly-away hair is another issue-- paste it down.  That said, a well shot greenscreen is a joy in post.
A luma key is quick and easy-- IF the subject cooperates and doesn't have any highlights that might get blown off.  It's not good for people to have holes in their foreheads, etc.
I'd go green with a good shooter and proper lighting.

I`ve tried to connect it to itunes , but won`t connect nor effect the ipod screen .

Many thanks for this - I had checked them previously, but switched off, unplugged everything and then reconnected - all up and working again. Best Rgds

  • Remove Green Screen with Adobe Photoshop Elements

    Hi,
I have setup a Green Screen in my home. I took some pictures of my wife with the Green Screen Background and want to remove the Green Screen and replace with a different background. I was able to do this via the Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 but need help with the Photoshop Elements.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Sridhar

FWIW, She is really easy to select on that green screen if you use a few tricks. The screen shots are in CS3 my preference but worked with Elements limitations to show you how easy she can be selected without any filters.
My end product doesn't look as good as Mark's though. That's a tough act to follow. Thought I'd post this anyway just in case you couldn't get that filter to work in Photoshop Elements 7,
First, make a copy of the image and desaturate it to make it black and white. I prefer using Hue/Saturation from the image menu (CTRL U) and moving desat slider down to -100. Next Invert it (CTRL I), then run levels from the image menu (CTRL L) to push the image towards pure white and black...well close. It should look something like this when these steps are done.
Copy this image to a new layer. (Just in case something goes wrong so you don't have to repeat the last steps). Leave the copy in Normal blend mode. Grab your paint brush tool. Set the brush tool's mode to Overlay blend mode. You will use black and white paint to push dark gray to black and light gray to white. When done, it should look something like this:
Not perfect...I did this really fast and was a bit sloppy and didn't get all of my light grays pushed to whites. Probably not a problem for the hair edges but would need to be fixed for face and body areas as this will be a mask to make the selection.
Select mask that was just made and copy it into your clipboard. Select<All; Edit<Copy. Create and adustment layer mask that has a mask. I used the Solid Color Fill Adjustment layer. Alt click the mask of the adjustment layer you created. It will turn the document white. This is because the mask is now the focus. Now paste. Edit<Paste. This will paste the above mask into the adjustment layer mask. Now, either alt click the mask or click on another layer to remove the focus from the mask. You'll use this adjustment layer as a base to a clipping mask. See next paragraph.
The Solid color fill layer (or whatever you picked) with your mask is going to be the base on which your selection will be built. Create a copy of your original image up above this base layer. Now, hold in the alt key and move your curser in the layers pallete to the line separating these two layers. Notice the cursor changes to an odd symbol...a solid ring and a hollow ring with an arrow. Click the palette on the line separating these two layers. (Release alt key when done.) She should now be covering the mask you created. Areas that are white in the adjustment layer mask will show the original image; areas in black in the adjustment layer mask will be transparent. (Areas that contain shades of gray would be semi-transparent...amount based on the gray's brightness value.)
For the green cast on the edges, I removed that by using a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to remove the green spill over. If you only wanted to effect the girl and not a new background add it to clipping mask. (Same way...alt click the line between her image and the Hue/Saturation layer.)
Not perfect but this is what I came up with based on the above mask:

  • Watching Movies: iPod to TV- black and white and split screen. Help?

    I have this cable: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2994604
As you can see, the chord colors on that cable are red, green, and white. The places where the chords go in on my DVD player are yellow, red, and white. As you can tell, they don't go up. I connected them so the audio works fine, but the movie shows up ONLY in black and white, and the screen is split right down the middle. On my iPod, the 'Video Setting' do not fix this. I also have the iPod Classic 80 GB, for reference.
    Help?

Toggle between PAL and NTSC on video setting.

  • Green Screen Ball

I am trying to green screen a moving tennis ball so that it looks like a glowing orange piece of the sun. The tennis ball is being held by different people who are walking around carrying it in their hand. The camera is focused on the tennis ball the whole time. I tried using chroma keyer but doesn't seem to pick up the tennis ball very well as it's moving.
Any ideas on how to achieve this glowing ball effect?

You can do tracking and match-moving in Motion.
When chroma-keying in FCP, be sure to insert a Chroma Smoothing Filter
before your keyer: 4:1:1 for DV, 4:2:2 for DVCPRO HD.
If the tennis ball is white, you might have better luck with a lumakey.
The manual has some solid advice on keying, including how to use
    mattes to simplify your work.
Of course, if the ball is yellow and the people are light-skinned,
it may be impossible to pull a good key. In that case, tracking in
    Motion is your best bet.
In fact, the Primatte keyer in Motion is WAY better than FCP's keyers.
Just do the whole thing (keying, tracking, glow effect) in Motion.

  • Is green screen the right way forward?

Hello, I'd appreciate any feedback on this, if anybody has any suggestions. I want to film a subject in a long shot as if they're standing in a large white expanse of nothingness. Should I film them against a heavily lit white background and then extend the whiteness around them in post, or should I film them against a greenscreen and key out the offending colour. I have access to shake, so are there any issues I should be thinking about while filming against green. The actors will all be wearing black dinner suits, I heard this is bad for absorbing some of the green. I'm very new to the whole colour keying thing, so any info will be gladly taken.

Now that you mentioned that you are shooting on the dvx, I would definately recommend using white background. 3 chip cameras are a bit more difficult to key than other mediums like HD or film. You will see some hard lines around your edges, and if there are fly-aways (loose hairs), forget about it. Any movement of the subject will be more detectable on greenscreen as opposed to shooting on white.
I just cut an 8 minute art video that was all shot green screen on the dvx. it worked well, but there were definately some difficult areas.
    Shoot on white!

    Hi,
If this is just when streaming online video/movies, try a clean installation of the flash plugin/activeX as follows.
First, download the Flash uninstall utility on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    Flash Player Uninstaller.
When the download has completed, close all browser windows, open your Download folder and run the uninstaller.  After this has completed, restart the PC.
When windows has reloaded, download and install the latest version of Adobe Flash.  Note: You may want to deselect the option to include McAfee Security Scan Plus before downloading.
When the installation has completed, restart the PC.
If the above doesn't correct the issue, then try the following.
First of all, download and run the Shockwave uninstaller on the link below.
    http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/shockwave/uninstall/win/sw_uninstaller.exe
After this has completed, restart the PC.
When windows has fully reloaded, download and install the latest version of Shockwave on the following link.
    http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/
Again, after this installation, restart the PC.

  • How can I change a green screen background?

Today I downloaded a trial version of PSE. This means of course that I'm new to the game. I can follow a step-by-step guide though. Here's what I'd like to do: I've taken a dozen photos of an actor with a green screen as a background. Is there a way that I can chroma-key out the green and put in another color, like gray or perhaps a textured off-white?
I wish I had a more challenging question. Maybe later on when I have a chance to play with the program I'll think up something difficult.

    Please see http://www.essential-photoshop-elements.com/change-background-color.html
    Thanks
