White windows

Since 10.6.6 I've been getting some apps (pages and activity monitor spring to mind) that have windows that appear all white, as if they are not being rendered. They are usually sub windows, like the fonts dialogue or inspector on pages, but not always. Any ideas?

Whenever I have a weird issue I try:
Cleaning caches
Checking for corrupt fonts
Re-building Launch Services
Verify disk
Repair permissions
Thanks ... Ken

  • White window shows up on all adobe programs just a strip window overlay...

    When I open adobe reader or Elements a white window opens with a ryb buttons on the top left. It well go on and off it I indicate a command  and preferences. It hides the preferences unless I drag it on the top left corner.  It is aways there..can any one help me correct this it is bugging me or is it a bug? Mac Maverick.
    Could this be cloud related?
    I was thinking of trying to do a clean uninstall and reinstall on my mac to see if this would fix this issue. Maybe the update was not installed correctly...

    You know... this is a "user-to-user" forum.
    And posting inflammatory comments like that is a great way to ensure you get no help at all, depending on whom you tick off with it.
    You mentioned in the other thread you started on this that it doesn't happen on anopther user account.
    That suggests to me that you have a problem with your primary account.
    It could be cloud related. Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling using the Cloud Cleaner? http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

  • Raw 6.41 update issue blank white window

    Prior to Camera Raw 6.41 update, PSE9 Organize opened and performed as designed.
    Immediately after the update, and clicking Organize, it opens with an empty white square window appearing to mid right and half outside the PSE9 window.
    Organizer will eventually open; however, if one clicks anywhere inside the PSE or blank white square, a dialogue immediately appears noting that PSE is NOT RESPONDING.
    Clicking Edit produces no such blank white widow.
    Once Edit is open and clicking Organizer, the blank white window does not appear.
    I am certain the blank white window is not intended.

    I just spent a long time at the Genius Bar trying to figure this out. What finally worked was updating Safari (because iTunes is part of the web browser). So try that.

  • Firefox opens as a blank white window when NVidia Stereoscopic 3D is enabled.

    I just recently got a 3D HD Monitor for my desktop and I noticed that if nvidia's steroscopic 3D is enabled, firefox (and thunderbird) open as a completely blank white window. If you right click anywhere in the window it shows up as a blacked out rectangle. The minimize, maximize and close buttons do work if you know where to click.

    I had the same problem as I reported in Bug 643316 in March. I uninstalled the 3D Vision drivers at the time and the problem went away. Today when I installed the NVIDIA 285.27 beta, I installed 3D Vision again, and I can no longer reproduce the problem. It did NOT require a clean install for me.

  • System Preferences opens to a blank, white window

    I erased my drive when I set up a Dual 2.7GHz G5 tower for sale, and installed Leopard. Updated to 10.5.4. Then found that when I open System Preferences, I get a blank white window. I can go to the dock item and click to select a particular tab, but it only changes the window size. It is still all white.
    The menu bar items also display only white. Any ideas??? I'm stumped. Also sold the G5, so must get it fixed ASAP.

    I don't know if this will help: it used to work well in 10.3 and earlier, and quite often in 10.4.
    Strange behaviour by System Preferences can often be fixed by trashing com.apple.preferencepanes.cache in Home > Library > Caches folder. Trash com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache as well if you have it.
    If this alone doesn't fix things after a logout/login, then trash them again (because it will have regenerated more bad files), together with com.apple.systempreferences.plist in Home > Library > Preferences folder, and in the Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder, the files com.apple.systempreferences.xxxxxx.plist, where xxxxxx = a hexadecimal numeric string.
    You need to log out and log back in again for this to have any effect (or restart if you prefer).
    If none of this helps, you will need to look in your log files to find out why your preference panes are not opening: the simplest way to do this is to use Console.
    Open the Console application from /Applications/Utilities. It will default to showing the "Console Messages" and possibly the "system.log". Use the File menu if necessary to get both these logs open, and use the Broom tool to Clear both windows.
    Now try to open System Preferences and see what appears in either of these windows. Copy and paste it here.
    You may see a message saying "Crash report written to <pathname of crash.log>". If so, click on the "Logs" icon at the top left in the tool bar (preferably in another window). Then, depending on the <pathname of crash.log> in your message, look under either ~/Library/Logs or /Library/Logs by clicking the disclosure triangle, then click the disclosure triangle for "CrashReporter".
    Find the crash log corresponding to your message and select it. It will open at the end of the log. Look back for the last line of asterisks in the log, then post everything after that to the end of the log.

  • Photoshop CC White Window Workaround Plugin Fails Version Test?

    I'm sure everyone with a Wacom tablet on a Mac is aware of the "White window" issue. See the original discussion thread at: Drop Down Menus in Photoshop CS 6 Goes Blank In Mavericks
    Photoshop developers partook in the discussion on the thread, and a plugin that fixed the issue was released. Plugin works great, and even in CC/CS6
    With the latest update to the Photoshop CC application, the white window issue is back. Looking in the console reveals the following:
    8/7/14 1:31:03.798 PM Adobe Photoshop CC 2014[11038]: WhiteWindowWorkaround failed version test (<= 14) and it will not install. Version is 15
    8/7/14 1:31:03.798 PM Adobe Photoshop CC 2014[11038]: WhiteWindowWorkaround did *not* initialize
    Is there an updated version/fix that anyone is aware of? I searched, but maybe I missed something.
    Many thanks.
    Andrew.

    Photoshop CC 2014 does not need that plugin, because the workarounds are already built into the app.

  • After starting Creative Cloud just a white Window appears, no Apps or something else Windows 8.1, more uninstallation and re-install didn't bring a solution

    After starting Creative Cloud just a white Window appears, no Apps or something else Windows 8.1, more uninstallation and re-install didn't bring a solution. I have had installed Photoshop CC Trial Version, but had to re-boot the system, so I lost the Software. After re-installing the Creative Cloud Desktop appeared just a White window. I tried to delete the file of OOBD in AppData but no reaction. It still appears as a clear window.

  • White windows, missing components

    I really was trying to get a solution for my problem:
    searched forums and in java2d faq:
    "Why are my Swing components not displaying properly? Why are they showing up as white windows instead? How do I fix this?"
    -the funny thing is, it was missing the answer in the faq :)
    My problem is that if I create a new Window from a MyFrame extends Frame class's function, the windows will not display correctly until the function is doing other stuff
    Demonstrative code:
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class WindowAndWindow extends JFrame {
         WindowAndWindow() {
              super();
              getContentPane().setLayout(new FlowLayout());
              getContentPane().add(new Label("hello baby"));
              addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() {
                   public void windowClosing(WindowEvent we) {
                        exit();
              pack();
              setLocationRelativeTo(null);
              show();
         void exit() {
              JWindow WaitWin=new JWindow();
              WaitWin.getContentPane().setLayout(new FlowLayout());
              WaitWin.getContentPane().add(new JLabel("Please wait"));
              WaitWin.pack();
              WaitWin.setLocationRelativeTo(this);
              WaitWin.show();
              try {
              Thread.sleep(5000);
              } catch(Exception e) {}
              System.exit(0);
         public static void main (String args[]) {
              new WindowAndWindow();
    I want WaitWin to get displayed as soon as I press the X button on the Frame's upper right corner (exit() function get's called). But it only comes up as a white rectangle displaying nothing until the 5 seconds of sleep finish.
    What I really want to know, is when does a window get displayed? I thought calling show() immediately displays it (I tried repaint, setvisible etc too).
    How can I achieve what I want? Do I need to create a new thread that creates and displays the window while other stuff are running from the calling function?
    I need some self-education about how these top lever containers (and the java thread mechanism) function, do you know any good reads?
    Thank you!
    Sean

    Hello,
    I found something about that stuff:
    http://www.ictp.trieste.it/~manuals/programming/Java/tutorial/uiswing/misc/threads.html
    The problem is that there is too much code in the event method, so there will be a problem within the event thread, because it is not able to handle all the code. To solve that problem on the page they create a class "SwingWorker". The link is:
    http://www.ictp.trieste.it/~manuals/programming/Java/tutorial/uiswing/misc/example-swing/SwingWorker.java
    So with this class it works fine, the JFrame is closed and for five seconds the JWindow with the message "Please wait" is displayed:
    import java.awt.FlowLayout;
    import java.awt.Label;
    import java.awt.event.WindowAdapter;
    import java.awt.event.WindowEvent;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JLabel;
    import javax.swing.JWindow;
    public class WindowAndWindow extends JFrame {
    WindowAndWindow() {
    super();
    getContentPane().setLayout(new FlowLayout());
    getContentPane().add(new Label("hello baby ;-)"));
    addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() {
    public void windowClosing(WindowEvent we) {
    final SwingWorker worker = new SwingWorker() {
    public Object construct() {
    // JFrame WaitWin = new JFrame();
    JWindow WaitWin = new JWindow();
    WaitWin.getContentPane().setLayout(new FlowLayout());
    WaitWin.getContentPane().add(new JLabel("Please wait"));
    WaitWin.pack();
    WaitWin.setLocationRelativeTo(WindowAndWindow.this);
    WaitWin.toFront();
    WaitWin.show();
    try {
    Thread.sleep(5000);
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println(e.toString());
    System.exit(0);
    return WaitWin;
    worker.start();
    pack();
    setLocationRelativeTo(null);
    show();
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
    public void run() {
    new WindowAndWindow();
    protected void finalize() throws Throwable {
    super.finalize();
    I hope this will help you,
    Xarena

    Sounds like you are in Full screen mode. Run your cursor to the top of the page and click on the blue arrows on the right hand side.

  • I have cs6 and i cant install the white window plugin

    i have photoshop cs6 for mac, and since installing Yosemite, it just hasn't worked the same. Main annoyance is the unresponsiveness of the hotkeys, they work sometimes, but lag and sometimes don't respond. i have tried to add the White window work around plugin but my photoshop says it cant open it because it doesn't recognize the file.  please help.

    I don't have a Wacom tablet, but Googling found this: Menus, shortcuts, Lasso tool, or Photoshop stop working when using a Wacom tablet | Mac OHave
    Have you unzipped the plugin before installing?
    Also check this forum posting: Mac OSX Yosemite   Wacom Intuos 4 - Painting not possible due to terrible brush lags
    Other than that, you probably need someone with experience with this issue to chime in

  • Blank white window?

    Since upgrading to Mountain Lion I'm experiencing several weird problems that center on opening folders and windows.
    First, frequently when I double-click on a folder to open it the new window is completely blank -as if it were an empty folder. But underneath it shows the correct number of items in the folder -you just can't see or interact with them. Likewise, there is a scroll bar at the side, but it won't move. This happens about one in five times I try to open something, and can happen to any folder (not associated with any specific folders or nests of folders).  My workaround for this is to close the folder and then invoke the Get Info command. Then the folder will open properly.
    A related problem comes when I move or copy folders. About half the time the action finishes, but the folder icon retains the new little progress bar and plus sign configuration. I can open the folder and its contents, but the icon won't go to its normal image until I (again) invoke the Get Info command.
    The third issue which may or may not be related is that now when I use the back button in Safari I sometimes get a blank white page. At that point the back/forward/refresh commands are useless. I have to use the History Menu to go back, or open an entirely new window.
    Is anyone else having these problems?? Any solutions?
    Thanks!

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    *Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

    By default Firefox opens a blank page for a new Tab, there is no setting to change that action without installing an add-on.

  • Safari not opening any pages, just a white window screen.

    Safari isn't opening any pages, the window just opens to a white screen. The wifi is working and says it is connected, i have as hooked an ethernet cable but its still just a white page.

    Download the Safari 7.0.3 installer package and run it. You can download it in another web browser, if you have one, or on another computer (not an iOS device, but not necessarily a Mac) and transfer it to the affected machine via the network or an external storage device. Otherwise, if you have mail access, open the email notification of this comment, then see below.
    Triple-click the word "curl" in the line below on this page to select the whole line:
    cd Desktop; curl -LO http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/15/41/031-3451/fovoxh8xl01wpditg1tngu3wsl6rdg1ypd/Safari7.0.3Mavericks.pkg
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. You may have to press the return key after pasting.
    The Safari installer package will be downloaded to the Desktop. The Terminal window shows the progress of the download. When it's complete, quit Terminal and open the package.

  • UI does not have enough contrast! All white windows, ARGH!

    There's lots I love about the Mac and Yosemite.
    But, the windows are just too white.  It's too difficult to tell where one thing ends and another begins!  It all looks like white space!
    Please have an option to change the window colors amongst a few different themes.
    The "all white sheets" theme just isn't working for me.
    And remember, not ALL monitors are 27" iMac monitors.   Some are 3rd party or not perfectly color tuned or auto-adjusting for the light in the room!!!!
    The colors aside, Yosemite is GREAT in many many ways.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Have you tried "Dark Mode"?
    System Preferences > General > check Use dark menu bar and Dock
    Also, try some of the Accessibility features such as Increase contrast and Reduce Transparency
