Who are these other people on my network?

Hello all,
I wonder if you can help. I'm a home office user.
I've had my iMac for around six months, but only recently bothered clicking on "Network" in my HD. I found a dozen other users sharing the same network. The number of users varies during the day - it can be up to twenty or so, or as few as ten.
If I double click on the other users, I get an AFP connection status prompt asking if I want to connect as a Guest or a Registered User. I don't want to go any further, obviously, as I don't want to connect my machine to a stranger's.
I can't delete other users from my network. I looked one or two of them up in the telephone directory, and they live nearby. Not in the same street, though in the same neighbourhood.
I understand that ISPs use local loops for high-speed users. However, I didn't expect to see them on my Mac network - or be prompted to connect with them (and, presumably, have them be prompted to connect to my iMac).
I expect this is an internet service provider problem, and I will contact my ISP helpline once I have heard from you guys whether or not this is a common occurence. I'm in France, and according to yesterday's newspaper a local MP has described calling my ISP's helpline as "a Kafkaesque experience"; a sentiment I fully understand - which is why I'm putting it off until I have as much information as possible.
Thanks in advance.

In the US, broadband companies learned early on that they needed to filter out traffic between nodes. When broadband users here click Network, they will not see their neighbors' computers.
If you are connected wirelessly, however, you may be seeing other people on your network if you haven't locked it down.
If you're not using a wireless connection, and you're worried about security I would suggest activating the OS X firewall, creating a fairly complex password on your computer, and turning off file sharing. This is about as safe as you can reasonably get without 3rd party software/hardware.
The fact that you are seeing other computers just means that the Mac is aware of them, not that they're doing anything malicious. You can't "delete" them or kick them off because you're all on the same network.
I'm surprised your ISP hasn't filtered out this kind of traffice from node to node.

  • Finding other people on uni network

    Hi
I'm pretty new to mac but have my new leopard mac. Im at my uni and can see that there are a lot other people using mac books. With my windows machine i could see the other people in my network and share files with them, but how do I do it with the Macbook/Leopard? I have heard something about Bonjour.
    Thanks in advance..
    /Robin

At my uni (last time I checked was a few months ago, before Leopard), computers sharing iTunes music with Bonjour would just show up automatically in the "shared" list over the network, so I assume that with the new Finder all Bonjour computers would show up in Finder's shared list. (My home Macs share using Bonjour, and they both just show up in the Finder sidebar). Of course you would need permission to access their shared folders (i.e. their username and password). I believe you also need to turn on "File Sharing" in the Sharing pane of System Preferences.

  • Please help! Why are other people on my Network?

So, today I noticed that there were two other users in my Network "folder". I can't get rid of them or even open them, because I'm not authorized. Which is more than a little disconcerting. So what does this mean? Am I getting worked up over nothing? Is somebody using my internet? If so, how can I get rid of them? I feel really uncomfratable with having files on my computer (that only I use) that I don't have access to. Any info would be more than helpfull to this computer illiterate.

    Hi Jerkzilla,
    Welcome to the forum.
First, ensure that you have File Sharing switched off. You can do this by firing up System Preferences, clicking on the Sharing icon and (within the Service tab) ensuring that Personal File Sharing is not ticked.
If other users on the same network as you have Sharing enabled, you will still be able to see them but they will not be able to see you.
On a side note, when you look in your Network folder you will always see 2 other volumes - Library and and Servers. When you click on Servers it takes you to your starup volume. Are these the 2 that you are seeing?

  • Netinfo... who are these people?

browsing through my computer, i came upon netinfo and noticed that there are all these aliases and users that aren't me. are these normal functions, or illicit?
    thanks,
    jamie

Without knowing the specifics of the users it's impossible to say, but the chances are that they're normal. UNIX-based operating systems run a lot of processes as special users. If you want some "light reading", you can read up on the default users in Mac OS X here:
    http://developer.apple.com/internet/security/securityintro.html
Other applications and utilities may set up other users in addition to the default ones.

  • Who are these people?

They create forum accounts, ask one or more elementary questions, emphasize they are newbies (it's obvious anyway), declare their project is due for a class within hours, and top it off with a desperate plea for someone to solve their issue for them Right Now! If they'd just mark their questions solved or helpful we could rise quickly up the ladder of Lovable Know-it-all Curmudgeons.
Their handles are all similar: "name12345678". I infer they're all logging in in from the same scholastic environment or have the same book.
I also infer they possess a similar work ethic.

  • Apple puts some stock photos in iPhoto on the computers and iPhones in the Apple Stores. Who are these photos of?

For instance, who is this kid? He's on all the iPhones in the apple stores right now. There are about 20 photos of him in an album. Anyone know?

    1. If you break your post into paragraphs it is much easier to read.
    2. I have no idea what your post is referring to, and how - if at all - it relates to iPhoto.
    3. It's a good idea to re-read what you've posted, and ask yourself how it might look to someone who doesn't know you and doesn't know what's going on with your machine.

  • Send an Email to those who are marked in people/group column

In the discussion boards, I would like to add a people or group column.
So whenever some name is mentioned in that column, I would like an Email to be triggered to that particular person or group.
If this is been created through Task list,  I know it would be possible. But I want to achieve the logic of discussion board and want to trigger an Email to someone who might be interested in that particular discussion.
Is there a way to do it ?
Came across this forum which exactly talks about my requirement.

But is there any easier and alternate way to do this? Thanks in advance.

  • Who are these discussions for?  Seems like a good place for Verizon to figure out who is mad.

I need/want answers to how to STOP being treated (for the most part, there ARE exceptions).  If needed how to end my contract without going through the ringer and see what other "actions" others are doing.
    Thank you.

    AZSALUKI,
But, they continue to tell me that i need to pay the fee, because I signed a "contract".  Over the past couple of years, they have replaced phone after phone, etc. and only said sorry.  In fact, I just got off the phone with them, and their offer was to ship me out another phone.  That is the problem.  So, THEY in fact have NOT fulfilled THEIR end of the contract.  Thus, I should be able to leave WITHOUT paying them.....  Correct?
Onceagain, I am looking to "the group" as to how "we" are going to handle the problem.
Oh, by the way, I did offer up another solution for them this morning.  Have a person from the store come to my location (all of 2 miles), and they said "no".  So, they are NOT working with me.
    So, please enlighten me.

  • How do i boot other people off our network?

ok so i just found out that my nextdoor neighbor, who's a kid who i know, is using our wireless internet from our extream airport, and i want to kick him off because im pretty sure its making mine go slower in my room? or would it make mine go slower he lives nextdoor and doesn't have internet so uses our wireless but it makes mine very slow on games i think. so if indeed having him on the connection his making my computers internet run slower, then how do i kick there computer off?

All you need to do is enable WPA wireless encryption and use a non-dictionary password.

  • Seeing other peoples shares on network

I do not know where to post this topicbut here goes. I can log into a Windows 2008 R2 active directory, but when I do the server that has all of the users shares "folder" I see them all and access them all. Is there a way to stop this?

When looking at the finder prefs under sidebar/shared section I unchecked: Back to My Mac, Connected Servers and Bonjour computers. I then did not see the servers anymore, but what is to stop a user from renabling them again? I do have it where other users can no longer see the other users folders, so they cannot peek inside them anymore.

  • Who are document managent integration partners?

From the OWF 2.6.2 documentation we can read - "Oracle Workflow provides seamless open integration with Oracles third party document management (DM) integration partners". Who are these partners? Thank you.

    Hi Martin
That DM integration feature was reserved for future use. The Workflow and Oracle's Content Management products are integrated. The Content Management SDK, available in 9iAS, integrates with Workflow via the Workflow Business Event System. Oracle Files, which ships with the Oracle Collaboration Suite, is also integrated with Oracle Workflow.
    Cheers

  • Who are Apple's "identified developers?"

In System Preferences, General Security, there is an option to "Allow applications downloaded from: Mac App Store and identified developers."
I wanted to download an app from the Adobe website...Adobe is pretty legit, and it wouldn't let me because of my preference. It's Adobe! I know I can just change my preference in order to do it, but unfortunately I can't remember my password, lol.
So who are these mysterious "identified developers?"

Funny - I just downloaded and installed Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and saw a small 'lock' in the upper right hand corner. Curious, I clicked on the lock and was shown the 'identified developer' certificate. First time I've seen an installer with that - I assume it will become the norm.
I just hold down the Control key and click the app and choose Open if I know that the app is from a legitimate source. And the Adobe download sites are usually secure so I'm assuming that you can safely install anything from there.

I send a friend an iMessage and other people on my network get to see the conversatiom.

Are you sending a group MMS? If so that is why. Also if others are using the same apple id as you then they will see all your imessage texts. You need to change your apple id on you device.

  • Bluetooth and network with other people I don't know...?

Hi, I am a recent convert to apple and I was just looking over my settings on my mac and noticed that there were two or three people on my network. I have no idea who these people are and my bluetooth was on so that I can send things to my cell phone. Should I be concerned about my privacy? I also turned off all the windows sharing and file sharing settings, but when the bluetooth was on - these unknown people (one name was Cat Hackman, not very reassuring) appeared again. I would really appreciate any feedback on my issue and any tips for a newbie with lovely mac computer that I really enjoy immensely.

Hi, to answer Trevor's question tovex does appear as a blue ball in a box in the 'network' level. The ball is kinda greyed out not fully shaded like my 'servers' ball. However, when I press 'get info' on tovex it says it is an alias and also I am not allowed to make any changes.
To answer myhighway, under my system pref > network is shows my 'built in ethernet' as the active connection (green signal). The connection is through a cable modem. I have not installed bootcamp/windows
BTW there is a new person on there as well called 'fs 20 20's computer', this one just showed up when I turned on my mac today. They disappeared just now but they were on my system while I typed this post.
Any more help would be appreciated. Tammy

I have checked with ISP, there response is like below:
Those are the NNI to GBNET IPs for Dominican Republic. They are Network IPs. You should be able to ping them-that means they are working.
    WANRT01#show  ip route | include 192.168.20.20
    B        192.168.20.200/30 [20/0] via 192.168.20.226, 02:18:29
    B        192.168.20.204/30 [20/0] via 192.168.20.226, 02:18:29
Here its shows from any of our MPLS site we are able to trace the IP and it seems like, 192.168.20.204/30 is one more site but in actual its not.
