Who Backs Up the Backup?

I got caught in this loop during the 2.0.1 restore process, and risked overwriting my existing backups.
Where exactly iTunes does iTunes store the backups it makes of your iPhone (so as to back up the backup of the iPhone.) It doesn't appear to be in the iTunes music folder.)
Also, how do you FORCE a backup during a sync? When I was first given the option to restore, it was from a backup 2 days old when I had performed a sync in iTunes just before I updated the firmware.
(Extra credit for title reference.

To force a backup, just right click on the ipod on the side bar and choose "Back Up".
The only problem with this is you can only keep at most one manual backup at a time, (the ones that don't have the date as part of their name) so it will overwrite your most recent manual/sync backup, so don't do it if the phone is in a corrupt or incomplete state.
The only backups that seem to be kept separately from the most recent manual/synced backup are those that are done during a firmware upgrade or recovery process.

  • I upgraded to Ios5 and have lost my contacts and other app profiles - is there any way to get them back from the backup taken before the IOS5 process started?

I upgraded to IOS5 and have lost my contacts and other app profiles - is there any way to get them back from the backup taken before the IOS5 process started?

Thanks but have tried that - When I try to restore I get a -50 error and into a loop of taking another back up.  I took a copy of the back up before the IOS upgrade and have it stored on my desk top but I cannot get Itunes to restore to that back up
Any ideas how I can do this?

  • TM is Backing up the Backup Drive

I don't know how it happened, but I just realized the TM is backing up my backup drive instead of my G5 tower drive. When I click on TM in preferences the screen that some up showing the "Change Disk" and "Option" hot buttons. At the top under "Name" it give the name of my backup drive "Sonny's (and shows it's icon) instead of my computer's hard drive name - "Sonny". I don't know how to change it.
Well, of course the backup drive is now full so I get a message that says: "Are you sure you want to back up to the same disk your original data is on?" Under "Options" it only give the name of the backup drive - "Sonny's". Any idea of how I can get my computer's name on the TM screen to show that's "Sonny" is the source? Thanks in advance.

Time Machine preferences is where you found the Change Disk button. You can launch it by going to System Preferences > Time Machine as well as by right or control clicking the Time Machine icon on the dock.
In Time Machine preferences click on the Options button. Drag the Sonny's disk icon that you can see in the finder to the "Do not back up" pane or, alternatively, use the "+" button to navigate through the file hierarchy to add it. Remove Sonny from the "Do not back up" pane by clicking on it in the list to highlight it. Then click on the "-" to remove it from the Do not back up pane. Close the Time Machine preferences window.
Double-click on the Sonny's icon in the finder. In the Backups.backupdb folder there should be two folders. One should be Sonny and one should be Sonny's. Trash the Sonny's folder.
+Any idea of how I can get my computer's name on the TM screen to show that's "Sonny" is the source?+
Time Machine preferences shows the disks it *is not* backing up in the Options pane and shows the disk that Time Machine is using to store its backups in the Change Disk pane. It *does not* show the disk(s) it is backing up.

  • Just got my iphone 5s and tried to restore backup from my iphone 4.  When I restored it, it automatically went back to the backup from 2013

Never gave me an option to restore from the backup I did last night.  Now I want to restart and just start over from the settings I had when I purchased it this afternoon. The old backup looks outdated and only transferred over certain info, no apps. Please help!!!

There is no other backup listed though. That's the problem. The only one I can choose from is from last year when I am a thousand percent confident I backed it up the other night.  Not only did I do it through itunes, but I also backed it up via the icloud.
Other than keeping my contacts, I don't care about losing what is on the backup from last year if I can't restore it to something sooner. I would rather have the settings it came with when I purchased the phone yesterday.

  • HT1848 My iTunes is transferring all of my purchases into my trash. How can I change the download folder back to the backup folder?

I just noticed that all of the purchases I just transferred have ended up in the trash. Tried it again after downloading a new app and it happened again. Does anyone have any idea how my Trash folder became the designated download/backup folder...and how can I change this?

In iTunes open Prefs > Advanced and see what it says for "iTunes Media folder location."

  • I removed a back up folder from the backups.backupdb folder and I need it

Help! I know I screwed up by using Finder and not Migration Assistant to remove a backup folder for my old G5 from the backups.backupdb folder that Time Machine uses to store backups. How can I get it back into the backups.backupdb folder again or gain access to that data now? It is very important data and I really really need it back!

Hi, and welcome to the forums. Sorry it's under such dire circumstances.
If you're still using the G5 (you've posted in the Snow Leopard forum), turn Time Machine OFF immediately. Do not write anything to the disk in question.
Did you empty the trash? If you didn't, you may be able to recover some things from it, but +*do not attempt to put it back!+* That will further corrupt your backups.
Did you remove the folder for a whole backup (named with the date & time of the backup), or something from within one of them?
Were the file(s) you're looking for present on your system at the time of any other, remaining backup?
Once we know a bit more, we may be able to steer you in the right direction.

  • HT1414 I'm trying to restore from an earlier backup but my iphone only shows the most recent. I'm on Windows Vista and found the backup folder. If I delete the recent files, will it force the iPhone to backup from the next older file?  Why doesn't it show

I'm trying to recover a file and the app company said to restore from an earlier backup.  My iPhone only shows the most recent backup.  I've been searching the net for answers - I found the back up file and date sorted them (over 6mb of files).  How can I get my iPhone to restore from an earlier backup?
I am on Windows Vista so I don't have Time Machine.
I have backed up the backup folder so if I mess it up, I have it in a separate place.
Can I just delete all the files with todays date in that backup folder and have it forced to the next oldest date?
Why doesn't the iPhone show a list of the least several backups.
    Info:
    iPhone 4S
    Software version  5.1.1
Backed up to computer through iTunes (not iCloud)

As you backup the iPhone in iTunes, it overwrites the last backup. Files are kept as they are changed, so that would explain how you get different dates in your backup folder. The only backups that are saved and not overwritten are the ones done just prior to a restore. You do have the option to go back in time on a Windows computer, however depending on the last time you set a restore point in Windows, it could be back further than you are willing to go.

  • Time Machine can not complete the backup...what's up?

I'm getting this error message which keeps me from backing up: "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/....sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1)."

I have not found a long-term solution (fix), but in my case the volume where the Time Machine backup should occur usually is mounted on the desktop but not as a shared volume (incidated as a drive with the people holding hands superimposed over the drive icon). If I drag the drive to the trash (unmount it), the next time Time Machine is scheduled to run, it completes successfully.

  • Backing up  the build-in Time capsule drive ...

    Hello all,
I am not interested in time machine at all and would like to use the build in hard drive of TC as a regular network drive for common data.
Does anybody knows how this can be backed up in an efficient way? Would it be possible to copy the data from the build in drive directly to an USB connected drive of TC? Or would I need to push all data thru the network in order to copy any data from the build in to an external drive?
    Thx for your information!

Not sure I agree that "backing up the backup is overkill for the average consumer".
I am certainly the average consumer. I bought the TC simply to be able to wirelessly backup my 2 laptops (macbook pro and macbook). I had 2 500g external drives with wires running around my computer area that drove me and my better half nuts. TC was a perfect solution.
That being said, having "extra" space on the TC to use as a network drive sealed the deal for me. I had just upgraded my MB drive from 80 to 160g, and frankly was starting to get close to the ceiling. All I ahve is music, family photos and family video on the drive. I dont do any high-end video editing (Ie, i use iMovie, not Final Cut Express or Pro).
Offloading my itunes library (about 20gig) and my iPhoto library (also, about 20 gig) plus my iMovie events (about 30 gig) was very appealing to me. However, not having the ability to back those items up easily is annoying. When I say easily, I mean as easy as the TC backs up my 2 laptops. I have those 2 500g HD's hooked up into the TC via a USB Hub. I would like the software to be intelligent enough that it could look at attached volumes and back them up.
I could easily put the data mentioned above on one of those 500g externals, hook it up to the USB, and it still wouldnt back up unless I did a drag-and-drop copy to the TC.
So ... the average consumer wants a bit more functionality and security. If I have data on an external drive, I want that data backed up to my TC. I'd also like to have data on my TC and have that backup to a USB attached drive.
Probably too much to ask .. but it's what i want.

  • Error messages "iTunes could not back up iPhone because the backup may be corrupted..." "1 item could not be synced. See iTunes for more information. Not syncing music.

I'm a recent iPhone 4 user and I just upgraded through AT&T to the 16gb iPhone 5s. The employee at the AT&T store who hooked my family up with phones, told me I could start out with a new phone or back it up to my iPhone 4. So I get home and it takes awhile to back up both phones, so after half an hour, I noticed that my Nirvana albums "In Utero" and "Nirvana" were not syncing. In Utero has twelve tracks, and it would not sync the twelfth track "All Apologies", it would ultimately stop at that track. It would also not sync AT ALL the late Nirvana album. Now, I've tried backing them both up again and I tried updating both phones. But it was only Nirvana not being synced. Now my whole library is corrupt. I have four artists on my phone, six albums, and 78 songs total. That isn't really much...
I really need help, this is frustrating me because I literally live off of music. I love my new iPhone, I really do, but I've tried literally everything under the sun to sync my music. That's the only problem.
    Thanks to anyone who helps.

Same problem here too... it's driving me nuts. I share an imac with my boyfriend and we both have iphones and never had a problem syncing or backing up. Then, suddenly, we get the message stated above... but only when backing up HIS phone, a 3GS (mine is a 3G). We have tried everything:
Deleting the backups and trying to create new
Changing permissions on all of the backup folders once, twice, 3 times over...
Changing the name of the backup folder so that iTunes creates a new backup folder
Creating a new user account for him in the mac os with his own iTunes backup folder and his own permissions.
NONE of these things worked. The closest we got was in the last attempt of creating a new user account, where it actually CREATED the backup (there is a backup file in the proper folder that is about 4gb in size) but we still get the error message at the end, and the backup is not found in iTunes under device preferences.
This is extremely frustrating to say the least and I hope somewhere out there has a solution.

  • HT1766 Where is my old backup stored? Because of auto backup, I can't see any of my older ones and with new ios erased all my data and it kept backing up the "new" setting

I plugged in my iphone and then itunes says my iOS was old and need update. Hence I update it to 7 where it erased all my data to start with, and it was actually backed up before it was erased.
After the new iOS was installed, it just couldn't restore the old data and instead it kept auto back up the new setting.  I called apple help line and the guy said whatever is on the itunes list is all there is. But because of the auto backup, the whole list is full of new backups without my old stuff. Is there anyone who can tell me whether these files are overridden or instead just not showing on itunes, and where can I find it?
    Thanks lots

When you restore a device, a new backup is created and the old backup has a date added to the backup name.
Look in iTunes prefs > Devices.
The current backup will not have a date in the name. It will show the date on right side.

  • Under Snow Leopard I used a WD My World NAS to back up my Mac Pro (Mid 2010). When I upgraded to Lion I am unable to access the backup because the NAS does not yet support AFP. I have now bought a Time Capsule and want to transfer the old backup onto it.

How can I recover the NAS back up to put on my new Time Machine.
Talking to Apple Support Adviser was a waste of time on case number 239647273
    Any thoughts or pointers?

Keep the old OS around and just kick the tires and test new OS. Apple has a history and habit of breaking support in things like this.
You can use TimeMachine as one level of backup, and even there there were changes with Lion, I would always recommend foremost backup clones of every volume. And clone (SuperDuper etc) can be stored on something like HP NAS Media Server which also was supporting TimeMachine, iTunes - until Apple made that harder and more their own proprietary format.

Rather than "upgrade" I would clone the system, and do a clean install, then allow Setup Assistant to import your files.

  • My Ipad has been stolen...I've purchase a new one and when trying to restore a previous back up, the system showed me a different Apple ID. Can it be the ID of the one who has my Ipad ?

My Ipad has been stolen at home.
I've purchase a new one and when trying to restore a backup from I cloud the Ipad showed me a different Apple ID than mine and refused my Apple ID.
Can it be this ID (which is an email adress) is the email of the one having my stolen IPAD ?
    THANKS
    Olivier

The appleid its showing you is associated with one of the apps / songs or another purchase that was on the device the last time it was backed up which it needs to download the app / purchase again. It won't be from the person who has your ipad now unless they downloaded it and then your device was backed up afterwords, so only if the backup date was listed as AFTER your device was lost / stolen.
    Thanks

I used my military (.mil) address as the backup for my appleID account, but now that I need to open the verification email from apple, the .mil doesnt allow me to open and verify that I am who I am?

    Hey Edgew7,
Thanks for the question. The following resource may provide a solution:
iOS 7: If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts5223
    3. Change your Apple ID temporarily
If signing out and back in to iMessage or FaceTime didn't work, try these steps:
    1. Change your Apple ID to the Apple ID you used previously. You shouldn't need to verify the email address.
    2. Tap Settings > iCloud and try to sign out.
    3. Change your Apple ID to the new email address that you want to use. You'll need to verify the email address.
    4. Tap Settings > iCloud and sign in with the new Apple ID.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.
