Who do PHOTOS animated using MOTION TAB look so crappy?

Very frustrating..... I've created a sequence of imported photos (JPEGS) and have animated them (simple pushes, tilts and pans) using the motion tab. They look fine in fcp, but when I create a qt movie and use 'toast' to burn to dvd, it looks terrible! During the motion the images are quite pixellated, once the image settles, it's fine. Are there field dominance/interpolation/settings issues I'm not aware of?
I'm an AVID editor trying to make peace w/FCP but it ain't easy.....
Any advice?

Mark,
I routinely produce photo-montages which each image having some basic motion added to them using the Viewer window's Motion controls. They come out beautifully, even when projected at a commercial movie theater (we're talking REALLY big screen).
I suspect that much of your problem lies with the DVD encoding. In tests I've conducted comparing QT Conversion, Cleaner, Compressor and Toast for DVD encoding, Toast was by far the worst in terms of quality - QT Conversion and Compressor were best.
You should also be monitoring your work while your editing on an external NTSC or PAL monitor. That's the only way you'll spot problems BEFORE going to DVD. Your progressive scan computer monitor just won't cut it unless you're editing content solely for CD-ROM or web delivery. If some of the problem is in fine areas of detail in the photos, either scan them at a lower resolution, or you can blur specific areas of the image in Photoshop.
I typically scan at a resolution 2 to 3 times what's needed for SD video so the sharpness of each image will be maintained even when pushing in to small areas of a photo. Save the scanned images in a uncompressed format (I use TIFF), import them into FCP and drag the whole folder of them to the Timeline so you can see what they'll look like on your external TV monitor.
When you see one that's problematic, open it in Photoshop and adjust or correct accordingly.

  • Using motion with pictures

What is the best procedure for importing a jpeg and using motion tab. Currently, the motion I set in the viewer looks good but has jitter in the canvas during playback. I'm trying to simulate Ken Burns effect just simple zoom and pan. What is the easiest way to do this? Do I need high mega pixel and or tiff to start off with? So far I've been just dragging pics from iphoto to desk top folder to FCE browser. Is this incorrect?

  • Minecraft animations with Motion 5?

    Hi,
I want to create Minecraft animations using Motion 5. Is this possible? I want to create cubics with Minecraft textures (.png file). I also want to animate players and animals (moving the entire player, arms, legs, head...).
    Thanks for help

Thank you for the fast answer. The program is really interesting, but I also want to include animated text to the video. Can I create the animation in mineimator and import the .mp4 file to Motion 5 to include the text?
Do you think that Motion 5 is a good program to create an animation like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtsCivFDiLw
Can I include different forms in Motion 5 (Cubics, plains...) with my own textures? If this is possible, can I use the plain as a canvas for a movie?

I have used still photos to make a Quick Time movie using FCE.  The DVD made using i-DVD looks somewhat grainy and the motion isn’t smooth when played on my TV.  Other DVD’s I have made play much better and I am wondering if the problem is my Quick Time movie settings.  The Dimensions and size of the problem movie are 1920X1080 and 584 MB respectively, while the movies that play better  have Dimensions of 853X480 and are about 1.3 GB in size.  Is this the source of my problem and how do I change things for the better.

Are you exporting to QuickTime Movie, or to QuickTime Conversion?   For iDVD, you need to export to QuickTime Movie.   Exporting to QT Conversion will kill the quality if you are moving the video from FCE to iDVD.
The file size per se makes no difference.
What size (pixel dimensions) are the photos that you put into your 1920x1080 sequence?  Also, exactly what are the sequence properties ... is it 1920x1080i60 ... or i50?  In North America it should be i60.
853X480 is an odd frame size.  Where are you seeing this number?  It would appear to be DV-NTSC, which has a frame size of 720x480.  Your 1920x1080 frame size would not be DV-NTSC, it would be Apple Intermediate Codec.   DV and AIC will look different, for sure.
Also, your quality setting in iDVD can affect the final video.  You may want to check that also (in iDVD Preferences > Projects).  Set it to Professional Quality if at all possible.

  • FCP  - Quits when using pen tool to enter nodes in the motion tab

    Hi all.
I'm encountering a persistent problem with FCP unexpectedly quitting on both version 4.5HD and version 5. The problem occurs when I open a clip from the timeline in the viewer and access the motion tab to adjust the scale of a clip or the position of a clip with the pen tool. I can enter four nodes successfully with no problems, but if I then go back to the clip or open a new one, I can enter maybe three nodes maximum before they cease to register, then the beachball appears for half a second and FCP quits with the "unexpected" message.
This problem occurs across all machines whether I'm running FCP by itself or with other applications running in the background. I am using 10.4.6 on my laptop (iBook G4 with 1GB of RAM and FCP 4.5HD), 10.3.9 and FCP 4.5HD on an eMac, 10.4.6 and FCP Studio 5.0.4 on a G4 Tower ...
Has anyone experienced a similar problem, and does anyone have any thoughts on causes/fixes for it?
    Thanks for reading.

  • How to get accurate photo printouts using calibrated FlexScan S1932 , Photoshop CS3 and Canon MX925 ? ALL ARE calibrated with i1Pro . WHO SHOULD GOVERN THE PRINTOUT , THE CS3 OR THE PRINTER ?

How to get accurate photo printouts using  FlexScan S1932 screen, Photoshop CS3 and Canon MX925 ? ALL ARE calibrated with i1Pro . WHO SHOULD GOVERN THE PRINTOUT , THE CS3 OR THE PRINTER ?

You need to work with the calibration parameters to get a good match from screen to print. There are no fixed values - basically whatever settings produce a match are the right ones.
First, set the white point - luminance and color - so that screen white is a visual equivalent to paper white. You can be very specific about this, with a viewing booth right next to the display and a particular paper as target. Or you can take a more generalistic approach. That too will usually work well, as long as you keep the aim in sight: screen white = paper white.
Don't trust the white point presets. You will usually have to adjust to compensate for your working environment. Make sure you can adjust both along the blue/yellow Kelvin scale and the green/magenta axis. Any given Kelvin value may well be wrong on the green/magenta axis.
Next set a realistic black point. This is important. Monitor manufacturers throw about completely unrealistic contrast ranges that you will never see on paper. A good glossy inkjet paper will be in the vicinity of 250-300:1, or a black point around 0.4 - 0.5 cd/m² if your white point is at 120. If you have a monitor that goes down to, say, 0.2, which most monitors today will, you're in for an unpleasant surprise.
Leave gamma at 2.2. Gamma is remapped from profile to profile and is "invisible" - the net result is always linear. You just want to stay close to native so that the monitor behaves at its best.
If you have a wide gamut monitor soft proofing in Photoshop can be useful. With a standard gamut monitor it's mostly a waste of time since monitor gamut is the limiting one.
Oh, and let Photoshop manage color. Make sure you have the right paper/ink profile and also make sure you have the right paper selected in the printer driver. This controls the total amount of ink.

  • Scaled down video using the motion tab in FCP 7

    Hello
I have created a video and one of the tracks I have scaled down to about 40%. The tracl looks fine on the monitor at 100% but when scaaled down it becomes pixelated. Any help/ advice appreciated
    Kevin

    1. make sure the segment of the timeline is rendered.
    2. make sure you are viewing the material on an external broadcast monitor
    3. do the rescaling in Motion or AfterEffects. If using Motion, make sure "optical flow" is enabled.
    good luck,

If your needs are limited to those tasks then both Preview and iPhoto will fit the bill They are already on your Mac. There is a free download from Google called Picasa available here:
    http://picasa.google.com/
It works much the in same manner as iPhoto. For some really heavy duty work there is GIMP available from SourceForge:

  • Still photo "zoom" through motion

    Hi,
I'm trying to create a "memories slideshow" consisting of still photos that zoom in slowly. I'm encountering a couple problems that I'm hoping to get help with:
    1) When zooming in by setting keyframes in each clip's motion tab, I find that it's difficult to get each photo to zoom in at the same speed and direction. Is there a shortcut to doing this easily? I guess the effect I'm aiming for is similar to what iPhoto does automatically with an album slideshow, just more controlled. (Is there any way to just do this from iPhoto and adjust the settings for each clip's duration and zoom?)
    2) When I zoom in I find that the images become very blurry, although they are less so when viewed in the program I used to scan them (Lexmark Imaging Studio on a PC). I scanned the images at 300 DPI and saved them to JPEG. I realize these settings may not be optimal - what DPI and file format are recommended if I want to zoom in to, say, 5x?
    Thanks.

Speed of a move is dependent upon the length of of the move. A move set up to do the "same" thing will be faster if there is a shorter duration between the keyframes. if all of you photos are the same size and aspect ratio, set one up to your liking then save that as a Motion Favorite, then you can apply that to them all. And there is no way to take info from iPhoto and adjust in FCP.

300dpi is high for video. Video is 72dpi. But a higher dpi scan means you can zoom further in without the image breaking up. If they are blurry... have you rendered the move? They should look better when rendered.
Doing still moves is a difficult task. If you search the forum you will find many topics on the issue that will provide valuable tips.

  • Still photo scaling and motion

I'm editing a series of still photos and can't figure out how to properly scale the photos and add zooms and other motions. Any advice??

To do this in FCP, place the images in the order you want on the Timeline. Double-click one to load it into the Viewer window. Click on the Motion tab, then use the SCALE and CENTER controls to set the animation you want.
Once you set the initial keyframe for an image, FCP will automatically add new keyframes for each change over the duration of the image. Setting the Canvas window to Image+Wireframe mode will allow you to scale and drag the image with the mouse.

  • Images resized from Intel to PPC Using Motion 3

Hey guys, I'm having a reoccurring issue. I work on an animation using still images doing basic ken burns animations with some masks. However when I open the same exact project on my Dual G5 Power Mac which has the same version of Motion. the images get re sized and the mask's are displaced. I originally create the animation on an intel Power Mac. I know it's something with the intel-PPC thing because when I open the same project on my intel Mb Pro it looks the same as the Intel Power Mac. I have all the preferences set to default except turning off the setting to automatically re-size large images in the preferences. Any thoughts?

if you watch the scale of your objects in the media tab does that change?

  • I cannot use multiple tabs for Hotties For Sale. I was able to do this until yesterday but now the same tab is duplicated each time. How can I fix this?

I play an app called Hotties for Sale. Until yesterday I was able to operate several accounts on the game simultaneously by using separate tabs for each account. Now I can only open one account at a time with a single tab. When I open a second tab I just get a duplicate of the previous one. How can I fix this please?

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor.  The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow.  It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them.  You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version).  Personal preferences showing here.

  • Am I the only person who is struggling to use the CSS panel in DW CC?!

I'm new to Dreamweaver CC this week (CS5 previously and CS2 before that ... total of 7 years use) ... was looking forward to the upgrades (and I can see there are lots which is great), but I'm finding the new CSS panel totally frustrating!  It's so much more time consuming an in my opinion in no way user friendly ... especially for those of us who spend every day using them.    I've now reverted back to hand coding my style sheet which means I'm having to switch between screens all the time (still works out to be less time consuming that trying to work with the new CSS panel though!).
I'm all for change, but this seems to be one big change which wasn't needed and certainly isn't benefical (to me anyway!).  I can see that is probably more likely to help those who are starting out as it has the diagrams to show you what the styling is doing, but for me thats just taking up realestate.
I was also looking forward to taking advantage of the dual screen option (especially as I'm now hand coding the style sheet), but it seems its only the panels you can move across to the second screen and not the HTML or CSS pages ... Arrgghhhh!!!
I'll give it another week and then I'm done I think ... which is a shame because there is lots I like about it, but at the moment, this new baby just isn't working for me!

I'm really hoping so because the website I'm building at the moment is taking twice as long as normal - previously I could click on the element I wanted to style, then click on the '+' button at the bottom of the CSS properties block and the styling box would pop up - now its lots of scrolling and then knowing whether to press enter, or tab or just click away to add the styling ... driving me absolutely nuts!

  • Acceptable File Size and Resolution for Still Photos in Keyframe Motion

    Hello Hello
I know that FCE HD (as other Video Editors), will automatically fit a still photo's size to it's default capability of 720 x 480 Correct?
Well, in regard to making the best possible ZOOMS, and Pans from Still Photos, is it neccessary to re-size all your photos (from an external editor like photoshop), to a specfic size?
According to an older book for FCE, it sez that actually photos re-sized to 720x534 with a resolution of 72 are best. *The proper proportion for NTSC.
And I noticed that when I inserted larger JPG still sizes (like about a meg), on the FCE timline, and when applying Panning, or Zooms, some of the rendered images with motion didn't pan or zoom smoothly.
Is that because those file sizes were TOO large?
Well I have soooo many stills that need to be imported into this particular project that it would be a lot easier for me to just generally reduce these stills (by percentage).
And is the magic resolution amount supposed to be 72?
Because if that's the case I can re-size all my photos to 72, and try to keep the file sizes down to say 300 KB's or so.
    Sound like a plan?

    Thank you guys
"basically, you should try to make your images large enough so they never have to be scaled beyond 100% in the motion tab in fcp."
Actually as I mentioned some of these file sizes are very large. About 800-900 KB's - and what as a result, what I've noticed is that I actually had to DECREASE the viewing area in both the Browser Window, and the Canvas Winbow just to be able to see the whole image.
Ok - so the 72 DPI is not as important as the dimensions of the photo. But as I said I have soooooo many of these that it would take me forever to manually re-size them all not to mention the fact that re-sizing some of them (odd shapes),would throw the images out of balance.
So again I ask - if there is NO motion applied to the photo, file sizes of about 200 to 350 KB's appear just beautifully ....
    BUT
If I need to PAN or ZOOM, is it ok to laod a 1 MEG sized JPG onto the timeline and start working with Keyframe?????
In fact in some cases I'm actually using these larger file JPS's (1 meg or more), so that they TOTALLLY fit the canvas window (cropping them by enlargment)
*With some clipping of the original image of course ...
    Why do I do this?
So that you don't see the usual border with horizontal images, or vertical images - know what I mean?
    Thanx
