Who HASNT experienced the random shut downs?

anyone out there have a macbook that has NOT experienced the random shut down issue?? if so, what week is your macbook and for how long have you had your computer??
thanks- paul : )

penguin first:
It's not that apple isn't telling us what's wrong wih our MacBooks, it's that they look at us like we have two heads when we tell them that there IS a problem, as if they don't already know it! I just figure that if there 869 people registered with RSD issues at www.macbookrandomshutdown.com, then statistically speaking it's not unreasonably to say that there might be more than twice that with the problem. I'd say Apple could stop treating us all like we're silly kids who broke our toys. <<<<<</div>
1)i think that's just a service issue (the lower level staff not being informed)
2)ok, lets double 869 (ill even say ten times that, because realistically 1 in 10 probably knows of this forum/mrsd.com) so 8,690 macbooks with the issue. apple has sold over 1 million macbooks so far. statistically thats still insignificant (less than 1%) these numbers are guestimations, as are yours. but please dont over state the issue, as statistically it doesnt make sense for a widespread recall or any of the other sensationalist claims people are making because they are upset with their macbook problems.
ghunarsdad- my thing with the number of posts on the different forums is that everyone who has the issue is perturbed, and if they are online i doubt they are only ranting on this forum, so alot of that has to be repeat postings for people to vent their frustrations.
i agree about the cloud, and it should be cleared up for both the affected users and potential buyers as well as apple's sake because this is severely hurting their credibility
i doubt they are ignoring this issue for the C2D (since the c2d is supposed to be hotter, if they dont get this issue fixed on this, it will definitely rear its ugly head on the next generation)
p.s. how much do the mac commercials **** you off? i personally cant stand that kid whos on there, but coming from a person experiencing RSDs i cant imagine how infuriating they must be

  • Ibook randomly shutting down...

    Hello all,
I have been experiencing a problem of my computer just shutting down at random times. This problem is not in conjunction with any other problems like freeziing or anything like that. I do not think it is a loose battery because it just shut down on me a few minutes ago sitting quite still on my desk. Any thoughts or ways to fix the random shut downs?

Could the iBook be overheating? There is a freeware item (think it's available
as a widget for 10.4.x and also as an app for 10.3.9) you can get to see the
processor (bottomside sensor) and battery temperature; but not cpu temps.
I have something like that in my iBookG4, and a different something in my
    iMacG4 in 10.3.9 = "Temperature Monitor Lite."
Some checking around and I see some users had a few different issues
and of them some had logicboard problems. Have you tried the Apple
Hardware Test? It boots the computer and runs apart from the OSX.
And there also is a similar link (by name, sort of) in this forum which also
has some information that may apply to your situation. Best of luck!
PS: If you have installed additional RAM in the user accessed
slot, check to see if it is loose. Also, reset/zap the PRAM. [If the
machine is running hot, the fan should be on; if not, maybe it's
something else... But it is something, for sure.]

  • Another Start Up/Random Shut Down Problem

Ok, so I know there are a million threads aleady about this, but I really cant seem to find someone who has a real good suggestion, if there is any...So I have a Mac Book 512/60GB and have had the random shut down thing happen a few times. One time (today actualy) I couldnt start up. I pushed the button about 5 times and the light came on and then turned right off. I waited a little bit and then it worked. Twice when this happened and after I started up the light for the iSight stayed on and the camera didnt work until I restarted. I was in iChat using Vid chat when this happened. I was thinking about making a genius bar appointment to see what their advice was because my local store seems to be up to date on most things and this seems to be a big problem, but I figured I would check on here first. Does anyone have an actual solution that has worked for them???
    Thanks a lot
    -Alex
    Mac Book   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2Ghz, 512 RAM, 60GB

Well the Genius bar ppl were great as always. They told me they could do it in-store but it would take more than 4 days and it seems that people have been getting theirs back fairly quick. I backed up everything on my iBook and had the macbook shipped to my school, so hopefully it will beat me there. He told me they have seen several of these, but when I tried to get details they seemed a little hush hush and confused. The common agreement from the geniuses was that it was a logic bored issue and thats what he wrote on the work authorization, i also need a topcase replacement as there is obvious discoloration. Im gona assume that they do run additional tests and not just follow what the "genius" says, if it is not the logic board that is causing the probs...right? When I get my macbook will it say the work that was done on it?? Hopefully this will be fixed, because a random shutdown macbook is baisicly a useless macbook when you use it all the time in school.

  • Discolouration and random shut downs - help!

    Hello,
I am having serious problems with my MacBook and right now I am losing faith in Apple, frankly. I am not a troll, and I recently posted a very reasonable post asking for advice which was deleted by the admins without any explanation. What really angers me is that I develop software for this platform, and I have a best-selling novellist calling my application "the biggest advance in writing software since the word processor". Despite this, when I post my grievances (in a very reasonable and calm way) and ask for advice here, my post is deleted.
I bought a MacBook when they first came out. Whithin three weeks, it suffered from discolouration, so I phoned AppleCare and the very helpful folks there agreed to take it in for repair. So, it went in, and three days later (great!), I received it back. Whilst it was in for repair, the engineers also replaced the hard drive, as apparently during their standard tests it was revealed that the one that came with the machine was about to fail - even though it was only two weeks old. I was also disappointed to see that the engineers had chipped the polycarbonate whilst replacing the top-casing and that they had failed to replace the screen bezel, which was also discolouring. On top of this, the new top-casing wasn't fitted properly. Still, I decided to see how things went, as I did not want to be without my computer again.
Three weeks later, my machine was discoloured again, so I phoned AppleCare again. Again, they took it in and I was without my machine for nearly two weeks this time. When I got it back, they had replaced the top-casing (again), the screen bezel and the polycarbonate bottom casing. It looked brand new, so I was happy.
Happy for three weeks, that is. After that, the discolouration returned. Am I the only one who has suffered discolouration repeatedly? Is this still an issue for anyone else? Or have I just been particularly unlucky? I wash my hands, and I don't see that it can be some weird Ph problem, given that my 3-year-old white iBook has no such problems.
Anyway, after two "repairs" with no resolution, I decided to give up and put up with the discolouration. My new machine may look old and dirty, but at least it worked and was generally a joy to use... Until a couple of days ago, that is. Two days ago, I switched on my machine and three minutes later it shut itself down for now reason. I only had Mail and Camino running, nothing else. After that, every time I tried to boot up, it shut down within seconds - it barely even got to the Apple logo.
Is this the random shut down issue I am hearing about?
The only way I could get it up and running was to hold down the power button until it beeped. Once I did that, I verified the hard drive and it did have errors. So I fixed it using the install disk and hoped for the best. But two days later, upon booting up, it shut back down again. So I called AppleCare (who are always brilliant and helpful), and they walked me through resetting my PRAM. I then left my machine on, and other than the fan running more than usual, it seemed okay.
But then, when I booted up my machine this morning, it did nothing. It got to the grey screen, and then I just got lots of coloured vertical lines, nothing more. I tried restarting several times, holding down the power button etc, but nothing helped. Eventually, I just reset the PRAM again, and this managed to get the computer booted.
So now, obviously I am very worried. I thought these shut down issues only happened after start up, but about half an hour ago it happened after having the machine running for three hours. I tried calling AppleCare today but I was on hold for one hour, after which I had to hang up as I had an appointment. Frankly, I have paid £300 for AppleCare, and whilst the AppleCare reps are always great and more than helpful, it is just not good enough to pay this amount of money and then be put on hold for an hour. I have spent my savings on this machine and it looks dirty and old despite being only four months' old, and now it is shutting down randomly on me. I have lost all faith in it. I am upset, and now, to add insult to injury, mods on this forum deleted a post in which I was, if anything, over-complimentary about the way AppleCare have dealt with my issues, and they did so with no explanation. On reflection, perhaps it was the title of that post, so I hope this one will fare better, as checking the terms of agreement I believe I am abiding by them.
I would just like to know if others have suffered from similar issues with their MacBooks, and how they have dealt with them. I would really like a new machine, right now, but I will be reasonable, of course. I think this is a valid question for this forum, and if the mods feel they need to remove this post, I would be very grateful if they could e-mail me and tell me why rather than leaving me feeling like I am being silenced.
Has anybody been able to fix this random shutdown issue without sending it for repair? Have repairs been successful? Is anybody else still suffering from discolouration?
Many thanks in advance for any help and advice. Please let me reiterate: I have spent the past two years dedicating all of my spare time developing a program for OS X, so I am committed to this platform. I am not a troll, just a customer with genuine problems.
Thank you in advance for any advice,
    Keith

I was in the middle of replying to your previous post when your post disappeared. That was interesting.
    Two
days ago, I switched on my machine and three minutes
later it shut itself down for now reason. I only had
Mail and Camino running, nothing else. After that,
every time I tried to boot up, it shut down within
seconds - it barely even got to the Apple logo.
Is this the random shut down issue I am hearing
    about?
    I would say yes.
The only way I could get it up and running was to
hold down the power button until it beeped.
This throttles the CPUs to 1 GHz. Heat is somehow integral to the problem.
    Once I
did that, I verified the hard drive and it did have
errors. So I fixed it using the install disk and
hoped for the best. But two days later, upon booting
up, it shut back down again. So I called AppleCare
(who are always brilliant and helpful), and they
walked me through resetting my PRAM. I then left my
machine on, and other than the fan running more than
    usual, it seemed okay.
If the fan is running excessively often and loudly, try resetting the PMU:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
    (This also resets PRAM.)
But then, when I booted up my machine this morning,
it did nothing. It got to the grey screen, and then I
just got lots of coloured vertical lines, nothing
more. I tried restarting several times, holding down
the power button etc, but nothing helped. Eventually,
I just reset the PRAM again, and this managed to get
    the computer booted.
There is a bug in 10.4.7 that causes the vertical line problem after PRAM is reset. Once you have reset PRAM, go to Displays, set the screen resolution to anything else, then change it back. This trick writes to PRAM and makes the fix "stick".
Has anybody been able to fix this random shutdown
issue without sending it for repair?
Not that I know of. Some have postponed repair with repeated workarounds like the 1 GHz throttle.
    Have repairs
    been successful?
Apparently yes. My machine had the heat sink replaced and has not had a problem in the intervening month. Rumor has it that current repairs entail replacing the logic board and heat sink with a newly redesigned combination.

  • Random shut down repair results

As apparently many of you have been, I am in the beginning stages of the random shut downs. My first random shut down occurred a little over a month ago during a rather long session. Everything came back up and I figured it was a freak happening at the time. However, in the past few days, each time I start the computer after it has been sitting cold for a while, it shuts down several times during or shortly after bootup. The problem seems to be getting worse.
Frankly, I don't know what to do about it; should I wait, ask for a specific repair, etc...? Therefore, if you have had this problem and sent it in for repair, could you please just give a quick summary of what they repaired and how the results have been, such as how long it worked after repairs are done? This will give me and others some idea of what the best option is at this point.
In all honesty, I wish I could unbuy this Macbook at this point, since from what I hear, this is a terminal illness for the computer that affects a significant percentage.
However, since I doubt I can so easily get rid of this computer and afford to buy myself a more reliable PC, who wants to plan a road trip to Cupertino and pitch a fit?

I bought my Macbook May 22 and started having the random shut-downs in early July. I immediately called Applecare after it happened a few times in a row and went through the process of disconnecting it from the power source, taking out the battery, putting it back in, replugging the power source, turning it on, pressing appleoption+pr and holding it for a bit, and having it turn on. It seemed to work -- for a day. So I called back about it and they offered to send a box out, but since I didn't want to be away from my computer I figured I'd just take it to an apple store near me. So I did that the next day.
I met with a genius and he checked out the computer, it had been on for half an hour without turning off and he was wary about it as if I was lying because he had never heard of this problem before. It never turned off during my appointment, so he decided to take another customer but run diagnostics on mine while he was helping out this other guy. While running diagnostics, he restarted the computer and instead of the regular gray apple start up screen, it remained gray and multicolored vertical lines started slowly appearing on the screen. The genius started to look stressed and fiddled around with the computer without it facing me so I'm not sure what he did, but the screen had shut off and woudn't turn back on, and didn't connect to another screen he tried to hook it up to. He took my computer to send out for repairs, and two weeks later on apple's repair status site, it still said "on hold for a part."
So I called applecare, was on hold for 30 minutes, and finally got a really nice girl explaining that the part had come in four days before and that my computer should be shipped out shortly. Two days after that I checked the site and it said that it was shipped out already. I received my computer and the form said that a few things were replaced but they were all letters and numbers so I wasn't quite sure what exactly was replaced. I do know they replaced the area around the touchpad because I had mentioned how I wasn't a fan of the discoloration problem. It was new and bright white and I was happy about it (it has since started to discolor again).
The day after I got it back I restarted the computer and the multicolored vertical lines appeared and I of course freaked out because that's exactly the reason why it was away from me for about two and a half weeks. So I called Applecare and the guy got me to change the resolution set up a couple of times and said that it was a resolution problem. I didn't think about it anymore afterwards, I was too happy to have my computer back up and running.
So a week and a half ago its started to randomly shut down again, and while it isn't as frequent as it first was (many times a day to just once in a while), it is still a problem, obviously. I'm glad to have come on here and found that I'm not the only one with this problem.
Sorry about the long post but I wanted to share my experience with Applecare and the repairs.

  • My MacBook randomly shuts down.

    Hi there:
My 13" MacBook (2009?) keeps shutting down at random intervals, but very frequently.
I followed instructions to reset SMC - no change
The battery is fully charged, and retains it's charge.
The Energy save modes are at 15 mins computer/display sleep
The odd thing is, if i keep moving the mouse/trackpad or keep typing, the laptop stays functioning. As soon as I stop working or turn my back, it shuts itself down.
My next step is to start looking for Gremlins!
Any support or advice you can provide would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Jo

Try using the Console app for diagnosing the random shut down issue.
Go to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Open the Console app then follow the instructions here >  Mac OS X: Using Console to Troubleshoot Problems

  • Logic Board replaced after randomly shutting down

I know there are a lot of posts on the randomly shutting down issue...
My MacBook started randomly shutting down after a month since I got it. Apple replaced the logic board and I got it back today. I read on some posts that people got their logic boards replaced and the problem continued. Is this likely to happen with my MacBook?
This seems to be a big issue. My friend got a MacBook last week and it started randomly shutting off within the first hour of use. He had it exchanged, and it's fine now... but for how long?

I don't think it would do any good to yell at the store manager/technician. Still, I do understand you since I got the same problem here. However, since my logic board was replaced, I got fewer RSD, which is a start...
Personnaly, I know that my MB is guaranted 1 year, so I won't hesitate to have it repaired, or exchanged if needed (after 3 repairs for the same problem usually). As a matter of fact, other than some RSD, my fan has started making noises when I power up my MB, when it is cool. I wait because there is no solution out there yet (for RSD, and my problems are not that bad.
By the way, reading many of the threads around here, we can almost state for sure that:
    -the logic board
    -the RAM
    -the hard drive
    -the heat sink
    -the battery
are not the (direct) sources of RSD. This has to be proved for the processor and the fan.
    To be followed...

  • Latest Release Week with Random Shut Down

Well, though I have been following this board and the random shut down issue, I went ahead and purchased my first mac. Got the White Macbook 2.0, with 2 Gigs of ram waiting to be installed. It's on its way from China as we speak and should arrive Friday. I was wondering what the most recent release week is that people are having the random shut down with. Has it stopped with later weeks or does it continue? Mine shipped Friday. Any idea what week mine will be?

    Hi Andrew,
I've taken in two other MacBooks for the same reason. The first time I brought the laptop in, I couldn't make it shut down and the Genius sent me home. The second time I brought it in, I left it shutdown with the white light frozen on. The laptop was also very hot. They replaced it without asking any further questions. The second time I brought it in to the Genius Bar, I just told them the whole situation, explained that I was a long-time Mac user and really didn't want to ruin my mac experience by having to try to "proove" a problem that was already happening with my previous book. They took me at my word and replaced it without any further testing. (I mean, frankly, why would I be interested in randomly replacing a perfectly new MacBook if it wasn't acting up?)
Hope that helps. I have not called in the tech support line, but have always brought it into an Apple Store.

  • BOOT CAMP & RANDOM SHUT DOWNS?!.?!.?!.

Now, I have posted a few topics and replied to a few as well reguarding the random shut down deal. I called Apple technical support and they were not support at all. I was talk to uninstall and re-install my RAM. The random shutdowns continued...and continued more often and whenever they desired. So, I removed BootCamp and I've been shutdown free...except for when I shut the machine down myself. I wonder if there is any relavince. Please post your situation...

OK. I have both random shutdown, and vertical lines at start-up since I put the Firmware update on last week. Finally making some headway with it.
I concur that holding the power button till the beep fixes the shutdown problem. It does this, by locking the CPU to 1.0 GHZ as the other poster mentioned, so we can summize that there is something with the auto-stepping and the latest firmware that are not playing nice.
I have done what was suggested here, and am still running after 30 minutes. We will see.
Next, on another post, the vertical lines issue was told to be solved by changing the resolution to 1152x720, then rebooting, then changing it back. That worked for me. I was not able to go into single user, was not able to hold the option and boot too another device, nor was I able to boot the comptuer without zapping the PRAM. now it seems fine.
I too found the shutdown first in bootcamp. and was able to keep her running by using AC power rather than battery, or so I thought.
So, all this seems to point to a bad firmware code set that either corrupts NVRAM or overwrites sections that cause the problems.

  • Dreaded random shut down...

I have a macbook that keeps turning its self off. The system will shut it self down within 5mins of turning on. If I hold down the power button until I hear a loud beep, the macbook will last about an hour until the dreaded random shut down.
Any idea of the problem is?

There was an update many months ago that fixed this issue. I had the random shut down for a while until the update fixed it. If you have the update you'll have to take it to the Apple Store and find out what's going on. I hope you have Apple Care.

  • Random Shut down & norton??

    Hi All,
it sounds like my macbook is affected by this too!! I'm just glad I found this discussion board and realized what is going on. My laptop is from week 22 and it the random shut down just started about a week or so ago and it is getting worse. Sniff!!
At first I thought it was because I installed Norton Anti virus but now I realize I should just get it dealt with through Apple.
    question:
1- does anyone else have norton? are there any issues at all with Mac that anyone out there knows about?
2- am i better off going to an apple store or calling the apple care people?
I can get to a store but is apple care better? I bought my computer via the internet because I got more RAM and a bigger hardrive and all that good stuff. It's white and stores don't carry it as stock.
Advice is greatly appreciated!! Thanks to all for the posts already in existence. I have learned a lot just from reading these. I didn't even know about the manufacturing week etc.

Norton is not the reason your computer is randomly shutting down. As far as we (the consumers) know right now, it is the result of faulty logic boards.
Also, since your computer has upgrades, you will have no choice but to send it in to get repaired. Call Apple Care as soon as possible and have them send you a box to ship it in.
Once again: Another case where it would have been best if Apple came out and said what the randomly shutting down issue is a result of and have a recall of some sort, and cut out the speculation of customers.

  • Has anyone experienced random wake/sleep cycles? (NOT random shut down)

I bought my macbook on August 1, 2006, and previously had a problem with my it randomly shutting down. I had that fixed in December. Now I'm having the opposite problem, essentially. Whenever I put my computer to sleep, it wakes itself up, waits a few seconds, puts itself back to sleep, waits a few more seconds, wakes itself up... a constant annoying cycle. It doesn't matter if I put it to sleep by closing the lid or by choosing "sleep" from the apple menu, it still does this. I thought that perhaps one of my applications was causing my macbook to wake itself up, but this happens even when no applications are in use and I'm completely disconnected from the internet. This is driving me CRAZY because the noise of it waking itself up keeps me awake, and having to close out of all of my applications and shut down every night or whenever I want to transport it is terribly bothersome. Plus... the fact that it is waking itself from sleep can't be positive! Does anyone have any advice? I'm going to take it into the mac store but I'm super busy and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions until then.
    Thanks!
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I started having an almost identical problem. I would put the computer to sleep the screen would go black and seem to shutdown for a couple of seconds. Then the CD drive would make it's noise and the computer would wake up. I reproduced it with a clean install of OSX. If I had a password set on the computer and did not enter the password the computer would go to back to sleep and then repeat the process again and again.
The first day it happened I could reproduce it every time. Now it's not so constant. I need to get the CPU to around 140 degrees Fahrenheit for a few minutes and then put the computer to sleep by typing command-option-eject.
I suspect that there is a faulty cable or sensor. Conincidentally when the problem ocurred my bluetooth also seemed to "disappear" the computer could not detect the bluetooth module. That leads me to believe that there might be two cables one that is a case-open-close sensor and a bluetooth cable sensor and that they are getting pinched.

  • My iPad randomly shuts downs apps and safari...any suggestions? The pad it's self doesn't shut down..it just closes the page or app I am on..

My iPad randomly shuts down apps and Safari...any fixes for this?

Basic troubleshooting steps might help. If you are using the iPad 1, low memory issues may be causing the app and Safari to crash.
Quit all apps completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Definitely do this - Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

My iPhone with 40 or so percent randomly shuts down with iOS 7 and 6. Often with the camera app stating the phone is out of battery.  Moments later I turn it back on and the same battery life still appears.  It sometimes happens over and over until I leave it alone for a while (still not charging), and then it works.

I think you might get a new phone instead of repairing it as it takes time and you said the repairing center is far from your living place

  • When I was editing a picture that I reposted on instagram, I hit the edit button and then a white screen appears and randomly shuts down. I have also noticed that my iPod has been crashing about every single 30 minutes!

When I was editing a picture that I reposted on instagram, I hit the edit button and then a white screen appears and randomly shuts down. I have also noticed that my iPod has been crashing about every single 30 minutes! Please help!

The iPod crashing when editing a photo is a known bug in iOS 5.1.1.
    For the other problem.
    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order
