Who is Denis Holland, administrator on my brand new Mac mini?

Received new Mac mini from John Lewis but on setting up found already set up with Denis Holland as administrator. Unable to change anything as locked with password. Having to reinstall from Internet.
Who is Denis Holland?

Just a guess but he is probably a John Lewis employee, or the previous owner of your Mac.
I'd go and ask JL why your Mac has a previous user (I am assuming it was sold to you as new)

  • Spotlight is not working on brand new Mac mini

    Hi,
I got an issue with two brand new Mac minis running 10.7.3 (11D50d):
Spotlight is not working. I'm only getting the Wikipedia-Search.
    Here's what I did:
    Installation:
    - took the stock Minis and set up two users, admin and user (limited account)
    - updatet the System
    - installed manually: Adobe Reader X, Office 2011, Firefox 12, Flip4Mac, Perian, Cyberduck, Google Earth 6.2 (the installer without the updater), VLC 2
    - installed using AppStore: CalendarBar, TextWrangler, Unarchiever
    - copied a few documents (Word and Excel files) from a PC to the Desktop
    Troubleshooting:
    - tried to restart Spotlight by adding the entire harddrive to privacy using »Spotlight« within the System Preferences
    - that threw an error "no priviliges"
    - started the System from the recovery system (on an USB-thumbdrive) and repaired permissions
    - that did not help
    - tried to restart Spotlight through the Terminal, running the command: sudo mdutil -E /
    - that command returned: No index.
    - the tried: sudo mdutil -i on /
    - returned: Error: unable to perform operation.  (-400) No index.
    - went the hard way
    - unloaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    - erased the Spotlight folder: sudo rm -fr .Spotlight-V100/
    - loaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
That made everything work fine until I did a restart of the System. After the mini restarted I was back at square one...
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?
Apple support suggested to reinstall the system. Something I can't do right now, as people need to work on those computers and cannot take a tow hour break...

    Hi Ray Land,
We can help narrow down the cause.  What operating system are you using on your new Mac Mini?
If you are running the Mountain Lion OS, you can download the latest driver here.  An important note is that the current print queue must be deleted before installing the new driver.  This will ensure proper communication.
If this doesn't work or you need further assistance, please contact us here.

  • How do I pair an apple key board to a brand new mac mini?

How do I pair an apple key board to a brand new mac mini?

Have you tried a wired keyboard to turn on the BT system?  Macs can require some special key-combinations that *must* be seen before the OS starts and BT sometimes does not activate before the OS.

  • How can i connect a Wireless Keyboard and a Trust mouse with a brand new Mac mini?

How can i connect a Wireless Keyboard and a Trust mouse to a brand new Mac mini?

Go to the Bluetooth icon on the menu bar and select "Set Up Bluetooth Device". Follow the wizard.
Alternatively, if you haven't yet unboxed and setup the Mini, you can pair the keyboard to the Mini (and possibly the mouse). However, I would set up with a USB keyboard and mouse and pair the Bluetooth devices afterwards.

  • No video on brand new mac mini

I am trying to get a brand new mac mini going for the first time, and although it switches on, there is no video on the attached VGA display.
I have connected the same display to my Ibook VGA adapter and it works perfectly, so it is not the display. I have also tried another display which also works on the I book. What else can I do other that take it into a mac store as I am a very long way from one?

Here is an assortment of Apple technical articles dealing with this sort of thing. Good luck.

  • How do I know if my brand new Mac mini (late 2012) really has Mac OS X 10.9 Maverick preinstalled?

How do I know if my brand new Mac mini (late 2012) really has Mac OS X 10.9 Maverick preinstalled, as stated when I bought it, without opening the box and booting the device? It says "Copyright 2012 Apple Inc." on one of the sides of the box, which makes me uncertain.
If it does not have Mac OS X 10.9 Maverick preinstalled I might have bought an old device, in worst case as old as a year or more.
            /Birger

The late 2012 does have USB 3 !!
I specifically waited to purchase a Mac Mini
until USB 3 was made available.
Look at the diagram (picture) on the bottom of the box.  The diagram that details which ports are available on the unit.
If you see 3 after USB.. then it is a late 2012 Mac Mini.
Looking at my box it clearly says USB 3.
I don't think there has been any changes to the Mac Mini since late 2012.
other than the pre-installed OS being Mavericks now..
    You will want USB 3!!!
My box also indicates it is version 2.6 (just above the Airport ID).
(Mine is definitely a late 2012 model).

  • Updated iMovie on my brand new mac mini and lost "SPEED" function.

Updated iMovie on my brand new Mac Mini and lost "SPEED" function.

    Hello bbryson68, I'm sure you've just over-looked it.
The answer is to click on Adjust above the Clip in Viewer, this will bring into view a adjustments bar also above the Clip.
Now you just have to select the speed via the Turtle icon. Once the clip has been speed-up or down, you'll get a Slider
over the clip in question & a Rabbit icon indicating the clip has been speed-up.
If you want to  keep audio undistorted check the Preserve Pitch checkbox above the viewer.
The Clip Slider & icon of Rabbit appear in the Clip-Trimer window below the main Clip, also check your Pref's to see if you have
Apply Slow Motion checked? This will slow or speed up all other clips to the first clip.

  • Brand new Mac mini only boots into recovery mode...

I just picked up a brand new mac mini a couple of hours ago and right from the start, it asked only for a language perference and then after that having been selected, promply went straight to the OS X Utilities screen.
I cant seem to get it out of this mode.  And because I do not have an internet conncetion set up on it, I can't, for example, re-install anything or restore or...
It's basically a boat anchor right now.

Startup holing the Option key and see if the Startup Manager will allow you to select the Macintosh HD.
see > Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If not, then return it for either a full refund, a replacement system or help.

  • Is it possible ro clean install Mountain Lion over Mavericks on a brand new mac mini

Is it possible to "clean Install" mountain lion over mavericks on a brand new mac mini

Actually evrything I can find states that the last mini to run SL was 2010.
It appears that the 2012 mini's shipped with Mountain Lion and later Mavericks. Link
Also why would the OP need a bootable SL installation media when they want to install ML?

  • Kernel Panics-Brand New Mac Mini

I am experiencing ongoing Kernel Panics on a new Mac Mini (purchased in July 2012). Running Mountain Lion, 8 gig RAM (Apple Branded). What I've tried to fix it:
Took to Apple Store, hardware test: Passed
    Reinstall of Mountain Lion
Uninstalled various 3rd party software including: LogMeIn, PS3 Media Server, Fuse, NTFS+ (don't recall exact name), DVD Fab.
Disconnected all external devices including External Hard Drives, DVD Drives, cameras etc.
They keep coming, pretty much daily (often 2 or 3 a day).

Big ole' me too here. Tried on 3 different Mac minis. First 2 were originally Mac mini servers that were reformatted and Base OSX 10.8.2 installed, no server. Lots of automatic reboots. Only app added was FM Server. These were installed from scratch, no user migration, no other apps installed. Last Mac mini was a straight non-server, brand new off the shelf, only FMServer installed (and FM Pro - not running). Getting reboots from kernel panic several times a day. All these Mac minis had SSD drives. I have Time Machine running, but its set to ignore the FM Server folder. FMS is set to back-up the DBs to a FW800 connected drive. Apple Display connected via Thunderbolt -not sure any of this matters. (Also repaired permissions, ran fsck, Safe Boot, etc...).
Don't know much about tracing the reason for a kernel panic but saw this near the top:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: java
It's been happening for months, been banging my head aginast the wall thinking it was something I've done...

  • Write permissions issues / lots of "ACL found but not expected" errors / hardware failure? on brand new Mac Mini (still within warranty). OSX Mavericks 10.9.1.

I was hoping that I could receive some feedback from you fine folks here
    My situation:
I bought a 2012 Mac Mini 2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7 from the online Apple store. It came with Mavericks 10.9.1 pre-installed and was delivered two days ago (I know, the mini update is evident but I needed the machine).
I noticed that I had to enter my password every time I created, moved or deleted a folder. I did not think much of it.
I did, however, think much of not being able to install files from certain developers. I received the "The installer is damaged" notification as shown in this topic: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5541793
This screenshot is someone elses, I tried to install audio software.
Based on that error, I contacted the developer of the software. But then I noticed that I got the same error for other developers too.
I tried the solution that the topic starter marked as solving his issue in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5541793. It involves booting in OSX Recovery (command+R) and excecuting the 'resetpassword' command. That did not work for me. It also looks like my password data isn't stored as I do not see the 'obfuscated' password dots that the screenshot shows in that topic, even when I entered and saved it multiple times -- but I'm not sure if that is part of the main issue (which I'm gettting to).
I also made sure gatekeeper allows applications to be installed from unidentified developers, as shown here: http://www.instantteamspeak.com/static/en/img/mac-gatekeeper-anywhere.png That didn't help either.
Next I opened up Disk Utility and ran a check on write permissions. That got me worried.
The check ran for a long time, spitting out "ACL found but not expected" errors.
I proceeded to restore write permissions. That took 20-25 minutes.
Once it finished I checked write permissions again. An equal amount of permissions needed to be restored! It's as if Mavericks didn't remember anything it did.
The good news is that I could now install the files I previously couldn't, but the fact that I've restored write permissions three times now, and each time it seems as if nothing of that is remembered, has gotten me worried.
I've made a video with some explanation here http://youtu.be/a0hKQvy-Km8 - my sincerest apologies for the shaky camera.
I then checked the hard disk and the partition above it. The Macintosh HD gave me the green 'ok' light, but something weird happened when I checked the partition on the level above it. It will take ages to finish and I see Disk Utility doing some strange 'jumping around': http://youtu.be/hyLAEhLRnKc (warning - long video so you might want to skip through it. The point is to demonstrate how long it takes).
When I checked the hard disk for a second and third time, I got 'everything ok' results pretty quickly.
Checking both the HD and the partition above it again, this is what happens (and what now worries me the most): http://youtu.be/4l2Fb2RvOW4
Edit: I sum up my findings at the end of the video, might be better to skip here and then watch the full thing only if it's not clear yet.
There is some further explanation in the video. It basically comes down to Disk Utility not finishing/not providing any conslusion, while Activity Monitor shows it's not doing anything -- please bare with me when watching the video, I know it's not the most exhiting video ever posted on YouTube but it does bring my point across (there is some more talk in this one; not sure if that's an improvement in terms of entertainment value though ).
** Is my hard disk failing? In that case I'll return the Mac immediately.
** Or just a software issue?
As said, this Mac Mini is brand new. If at some stage anyone would feel the wise thing to do is to return my Mac, please do let me know. There is a 14 day return policy in The Netherlands (on top of other warranties) and I'd rather return it in case of doubt, than end up with technical issues with this machine once I've started working with it. I'm ok with doing some troubleshooting if the machine is fine, but I'd rather not take a gamble with a 1200 € machine under warranty.
Thank you so much in advance - your help is highly appreciated.

  • Brand new Mac mini ONLY displays when waking from sleep

    Have an unusual problem.
Brand new 2011 Mac mini.  Turn it on, and I do not get the grey Apple logo screen or normal spinning cog.  Light comes on as normal, and chime chimes as normal.  I've tried three different monitors now and I never get a display, unless I put the mini to sleep with the power button in back, then wake it with a keyboard key stroke, the display turns on and works as normal.
As of 20 Sep 2011, I've got all the software and EFI updates installed.  I've also reset the PMU, SMC, PRAM, and NVRAM to no avail.
    Thanks.

Yes, sure did.  Tried different cables and Thunderbolt to video adapters.  Don't know if it makes a difference, but I'm using VGA.  Originally tried it about a week ago with DVI and it worked ok.  The problem is the monitor we're using in our classroom doesn't support DVI or HDMI.

  • Fuzzy display on HDM on brand new Mac Mini

I Have a brand new, purchased less than 2 -weeks ago, Mac Mini. I have a brand new Asus monitor. I am using an HDMI to HDMI cable. The text is more than fuzzy. I have tried the HDMI to DVI converter that came with the Mac Mini, as well as a two other HDMI cables and a completely different monitor. I Have also read several other posts that state that the HDMI port on the Mac Mini is has this known issue of fuzzy text. I have tried making several adjustments on the monitor with no relief. Does anyone have any insight on what else I can try? I thought it was an issue with Mountain Lion, then just the Mac mini in general, It's pretty irritating that I Just spent over $1800 and it looks like crap. Any suggestions?

I don't get it. I've had 5 different models of monitor (4 monitors, 1 1080p TV to be accurate) connected to my Mac mini (Late 2012) via HDMI, and all have looked great. I have an Acer 231SHL connected as my 2nd monitor to my Mac mini's HDMI port right now. (My primary monitor is a 27" 2560x1440 and connected via a mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort connector.) I've variously used the Acer, a Dell, an AOC, an HP, and a Vizio (26" TV). I've even used two HDMI connections at once (straight HDMI and MDP->HDMI).
I wonder what the difference is.
