Who is happy with Spot and Patch?

First let me say that I'm thrilled almost completely with Aperture in general. It pretty much solidified my transition to digital from film. I have a long workflow history with scanned slides and photoshop so I am quite used to and adept at spotting and patching my shots with their wonderful healing brush, clone tool, etc. I was excited about the prospects of using aperture for all the minute details that go into a workflow but the one glaring shortcoming is the spot and patch tool. I find the spot tool does a very bad job of using surrounding details to fill in a spot. You get a circular blur that might be accurate color wise but retains no detail. This is very apparent on skin. It's pretty much unusable. And the patch tool is a poor substitute for cloning. No matter what I do I cannot get it to blend in, I always see the circle.
I know what you all are going to say, just shoot it over to photoshop. This is what I've been doing but it really causes the size of your library to grow since you don't get the advantages of the smaller RAW file size.
Maybe in Aperture 2.0? Any one have any thoughts.

I've had very good success with the Spot and Patch tool, but you have to be very careful about the areas you work with. Chad's advice is very good---read the PDF. Note that the PDF says at the very outset under "Spotting Your Images"--"When the area around the blemish is continuous (such as a solid color) and doesn’t contain a distinct texture, you can use the spotting method to obscure the blemish by integrating the pixels that surround it."
In my experience, that advice is critical. Spotting and patching replace pixels with other pixels. Ideally, what you want to do is have Aperture take out an anomolous set of pixels (they don't match their surrounding pixels, hence they create a spot) and replace these pixels with ones that have the same characteristics of the surrounding pixels. So, for example, if the spot is in the middle of a very varied area, Aperture has trouble determining what you want as a replacement for the offending area.
The PDF tells us a lot about how to adjust the spotting and patching when the conditions for the operation are not ideal.

  • Saving spot and patch adjustments

After using spot and patch, the circles delineating my spot and patch work remain. How do I save the image after spotting and patching so that I can view the image as complete without the track marks of my work?
    Thanks very much.
    p.s.
I think Apple has made a big mistake with their very high fee for support.

And it's also worth pointing out that even when the Spot & Patch tool is NOT selected, you can still adjust all of the Spot & Patch parameters on the Adjustments HUD or Panel without seeing the yellow target circles.
I do this all the time, because it's much easier to make these adjustments without the circles visible. With the Spot & Patch tool selected, click on the particular spot that you want to modify. Then press "A" to switch back to the Selection tool (to hide the circles) and then make your adjustments to Opacity, Softness, etc. with an unobstructed view.

  • Spot and patch random behaviour

    hi,
i have been using the spot/patch tool. i edit my images full screen, select the point to patch, and everything works fine.
then i look at the images in the regular window, or maybe open them later on, and the patch circle is right there where i put it, but no adjustment is there anymore. actually, the adjustment is in the photo, but somewhere else (down an inch, on a side or so on). i do not do anything else than using the tool, selecting the spot, getting the circle and the right adjustment, closing the image.
any ideas on how to stop this. it is making the tool quite unusable, unless i print/save atiff right after (and that does not make sense).
    thanks,
    @lberto

It must only be impacting the thumbnails because when I export a copy out of the photo with a problem the spot and patch adjustments are there whereas when you view it within aperture they aren't. Also at times when you go back to the photo within aperture is shows it's fine but a few minutes later it won't be. The actual file must have the adjustments on it since it exports out fine.

  • Who is Happy with their Apple Bluetooth? (the brand name one)

I am very pleased with it and I was wondering who else has had good experiences/ found neat things about it.

I am quite happy with my Apple iPhone Bluetooth headset. No noise and the range is solid to about 10 feet with a noisy connection out to about 15 feet. I have noticed that when carrying in my pocket or my Incase leather belt case that I do have range problems if the antenna is facing toward my body rather than away from my body. The antenna is on the dock connector end and is covered with the black plastic piece.
Carry with the glass face toward your body and that will take care of it. I also have a Motorola HS300 and their range is quite similar but the Motorola has more clicks and pops. The Apple has been quite noise free. I have even used it while riding the bicycle and wind noise has not been a problem unless riding into the wind.
A friend of mine in Florida received his this week and uses it regularly on iChat with an Intel iMac. He had been using a Jawbone but the Jawbone is not as clear as the Jawbone when talking to him. The range is about the same between the two on the iMac.
These are the only two I am personally aware of but both of us are quite happy with them. He uses his with his iMac and I use mine with my iPhone.

  • Shuffle 3g - Anyone who is happy with it?

I have recenlty ordered an iPod shuffle 3rd generation as a gift for a relative.
The thing is on its way, as the birthday party will be in a week or so.
Now before buying this little ipod I forgot to check on here and see if there were any problems with the device...and I'm truly upset abourt this moisture problem.
The person who is going to get my present is not a runner or anything but I'm sure she intends to use it at the gym sometimes and also at the beach or on a bike ride...
I'm really worried about this whole thing and I'm afraid I betetr return it as soon as I get without waiting for any testing time. Eeven people who bought the ipod recenlty experienced that problem..so I guess that in a whole year they still didn't fix the earbuds.
Anyone in here who had succesful experiences?

I bought one early, took it on a trip and temporarily used the iPod headphones since no adapter was available at that time. I ran into the sweat problem in Glendale, AZ, and using plastic wrap and scotch tape from the kitchen of one restaurant covered the controls and stopped the moisture problem.
But that was only temporary anyway, I was waiting to buy this:
    http://scosche.com/products/sfID1/210/sfID2/343/productID/1726
That lets me use my Ultimate Ears and Sennheiser Sport headphones or any others with it and I have not had any problems at the gym. And I do sweat a lot.
Quite happy with the combination, glad not to be using the Apple earbuds.

  • So is there anyone on here who is HAPPY with their ipod classic?

i recently purchased a 160gb ipod classic (the black model) and i'm thinking about returning it based upon the overwhelming negative posts i've read about it on here. i still have not removed the item from its packaging so have not yet experienced either good or bad results. i already own a 30 and 80gb 5th gen which have both proven totally reliable but i'll need to sell them both in order to cover the $350 expense of the classic. with all of the horror stories i've read on here about the classic, i'm thinking of taking it back and just sticking with my trusty ol' 5th gens. any advice?

    Jeff,
I am happy with mine, but
    1) it's my first,
    2) I can afford it, and
    3) I'm basing my opinion on my own experience, rather than that of a discussions board.
I'm a little lost as to how you could buy one if you can't afford it, why you'd get one when you already have two, and how you could buy one without opening it. If I were you, I'd take it back, but then, I may not have bought it in the first place, or at least not until I had sold the others.
    Good luck,
    Tim

I would just like the Pop Up by thr clock asking me to upgrade to 30 to go away.
    I don't like 30 and i,m happy with 28.

You should update to Firefox 30, 28 is no longer supported nor secure.
Is there a reason you don't want to update?

  • Kernel panic with ipf and patch 125014-02?

    Hi,
After bringing a bunch of Sparc servers running Solaris 10 up to current patch level I've been experiencing strange and unstable behavior. All servers are running with an ipfilter configuration.
One server has been freezing on the network interface at least once every day without any syslog notice. A reboot is the only way up again.
Now today one server (a Internet proxy server) did a kernel panic twice - never seen that before on this server.
It seems like it was caused by the kernel module ipf. And since it has never happend before I guess it could be caused by the IP filter patch 125014-02.
Anyone experiencing something similar and am I on the right track with suspecting this patch to be bad?
    Thanks
    Kasper

me too - I'm still waiting for a patch:
Case# 65340046 - panic due to IPF firewall
    From: Fletcher Cocquyt
    To: <[email protected]>
    Date: Feb 12 2007 - 10:09am
We had another panic & reboot, so we will be forced to disable IPF firewall
(is svcadm disable sufficient, or do I need to do more to prevent the
    panics?)
How can I be notified when there is a proper Sun patch to fix this?
    thanks

    Is it IPF firewall related?
Will disabling ipf (until there is a fix) avoid this bug ?
    Thanks

    Fletcher,
This system panic'd due to bug 6490522: S10 System panic bad mutex in
ipf:fr_derefrule. Unfortunately at this time we do not have an offical fix
    for
this bug, however we do have a test binary built. Please let me know if you
would like to test this binary on this system.
    Thanks.

  • Spot and Patch tool with grain picture

I have a big problem, most of my picture are with a lot of grain, i used to shot with really high iso.
When i try to use the patch tool, it seem that it work fine only with no grain picture, i tried to move all the slide, but i'm not able to have a really good work, for most of the picture i have to use photoshop to remove all the spot.
Now i found that retouch tool are a lot better then patch, anyone have some idea that can help me? I am trying to use aperture as the only program to work on my picture.
    Thanks a lot.

I think if there's a lot of grain you'd have better luck with the clone part of the tool, as it should clone the grain as well. The trick is whether you have anywhere in the photo you can really clone from.

  • Question on Spot and Patch Tool

    Hi,
I don't know if it is not knowing how to use it properly or not, but I have a great deal of trouble with that tool sometimes. I have a difficult time getting a spot/patch to blend properly. For example, if I take out a dust spot, sometimes the patch or spot looks too plain with no noise, so it doesn't blend in properly. I have tried fiddling with the softness and other settings and sometimes it gives an acceptable result(usually an area of constant colour range like blue sky), and other times it just doesn't seem possible to get it to blend in properly?
Is this a limitation of the tool ?

I used it last night for the first time - it works best for removing obvious blemishes - it would take ages to remove lines etc - a lot depends on the source for the patch - has to be virtually identical to the area one wants to amend. I used it to great effect to get rid of a giant dribble from the chin of my 2 y/o daughter - took some pixels from the bid and hey presto dribble gone and hello bib - it would be v useful to get rid of eg stains on a dirty bib (you can see what my main subject is these days) also on a face getting rid of a zit or similar - as for lines I think that is v delicate work and not sure it is suited to that - of course I could be wrong.

  • Help -- Who has experience with ant and build.xml files ?

    Hi,
I think my build.xml file is missing setting a classpath I need, but I have never played around with a build.xml file. Could someone help ?
    Thank you.
    Grazia

A lot of people here use ant. But not all of us can read your mind, and those of us that can are sadistic bastards that like to force people to provide details of their problems just for the hell of it.
    So please do the following:
    * Go through an ant tutorial or other introductory docs, doing an example or two if present.
    * Set up your build.xml according to what you've learned.
    * If it still doesn't work, post the relevant portions of it (hopefully you'll have a small, representative sample that reproduces the problem), along with your relevant directory and file structure, the command you're running, and what error messages you're getting.

  • Who IS happy with 2.2?

I have not received the update message yet and after reading many posts I am not sure I want to update. However, I realize that these forums are the place for people to solve problems so I am unsure how many replies I am going to get in regards to positive responses. Being a "techie". I am well familiar with the bugs and bumps of a new upgrade, but this is my phone, my life line to the world. Should I wait or should I go???

Count me among the great number of displeased users. I loved my phone right up until the update completely wrecked it.
Before you think that I am exaggerating, consider the plethora of issues I encountered immediately following the install:
-I lost 90% of my contacts after the upgrade. The few remaining contacts were lost when the techs got ahold of my phone.
-Apps run continuously, which causes my battery to be completely depleted within half a day. Compare that to the almost 2 days of battery life I used to get.
-Orientation issues when turning the phone. A good descriptor would be 'confused' for this problem. The phone acted like it had no idea where to go. Back and forth, back and forth.
    -Rampant scrolling issues.
-Gmail was the only email that worked after the update.
-The phone would no longer sync with my 2010 Ford truck.
Sprint Verizon did a hard reset last night and left me with a partial phone. Most everything is working properly now even though I lost all of my contacts, pictures, and music. And forget about using an Exchange email client if my phone is any indicator. Finally, my battery life is still suspect since there are 15 apps running in the background. I even downloaded the Advanced Task Killer Froyo but even it won't kill the apps. I do hard stops and the apps still run.
Suffice it to say that you do not own this phone after 2.2 is installed - It owns you. I hate to say it but I'm tempted to root it so that I am in control of the phone....

  • Happy with SAP and PHP

    Hi:
    I just read <b>John Coggeshall</b> blog...And gotta say..."Woaw, it blows my mind" -:D
I have been an ABAP Consultant for 3 years and a very active PHP developer for more than 1 year. Actually...and sorry if anyone disagress...I hate Java and also hate JSP...I was glad when i read about BSP (Which i'm planning to learn)...But when i read that SAP and PHP can be mixed together...it was like a dream come true.
As soon as i can, i'm going to set up my SAPRFC. And hope i can make some contributions to the community.
Thanks SAP and Zend...For letting me create SAP Web Services without Java stuff -:)
    Greetings,

    ActualiSap Consultores

Sorry for my long time away...I have been pretty busy...
Anyway...a few day ago, i managed to get all my PHP-to-SAP connection...And damn...I gotta say...i really get shocked...It's amazing what you can do, and how easy you can do it -:D
I just have made two simple examples, but those we're enough to make me happy...I use RFC_READ_TABLE and RFC_READ_REPORT.
I actually want to make some SM30 simulation...so as soon as get some demo version, i going to post it, or write a blog about it -;) Some time ago, i made something like that using PHP and MySQL...So i don't think it's going to be that hard...Anyway...I should show all the Abapers out there that PHP is a great programming language too and by mixing PHP and SAP...you can get a killer tool -;)
    Greetings,
    Blag.

  • Who Uses Applescript with Aperture and Why?

From time to time, I come see Applescript mentioned by Aperture Users. The Apple Support website devotes a few paragraphs.
For an amateur with lots of time. how would Applescript make my experience with Aperture any better? It automates what?

There's also an application that will give you lots of statistics on your Aperture library (lenses used, etc):

I'm pretty sure it uses AppleScript to get the data.

  • How can you give full access to your Apple ID and iTunes library to someone who moved in with you and have their own Apple ID?

As the title says, we would like to use just one account in the future, or at least fully share both account so we can share our libraries. Thanks in advance!

    Hi Hansem1979,
Here is an article describing 2 different methods to share your libraries and the differences beteween them:
