Who is using FCP? And for what? Pleae post.

I need help convincing a potential client that Apple + FCP can compete with a Symphony.
The projects are all SD, but this client is massive and currently all work is dony on the Symphony.
I know that the editor is the main factor but this client has Avid burned in his brain.
So, can you please let me know if you have worked on both and what the key differences are?
My system specs are listed below.

A LOT less expensive, not a little, A freaking TON. The question here should be what does the client intend to edit... I've done everything from Feature Film to TV spots in HD, SD, you name it. There's NEVER been a time I really needed an Avid to finish ANY of these projects.
The only thing I can think of where Avid really beats up on FCP is in many mulitple bay setups sharing media (like over 4 or so)... also there are features for News organizations that are pretty neat too, but for a boutique situation? FCP simply rules the roost. There are many ex Avid folks out there and I never hear of them going back. I owned many avids in my day, and wouldn't go back.
Cripes, you could build 4 HD FCP bays with Kona 2 cards, and fast arrays for the price of a single Symphony setup...

Here you have all the data selection regarding a particular user id, so what you can do is do F1 on any of the fields and see the technical help in that for the table names.
some of the tables are :
                                 1) 'USUSERS'(User: Transfer structure for lists of users),
                                 2) 'USER_ADDR' (Users by address data)
                                 3) 'USUSERALL' (Users with All Data for List Output)

If you do NOT need to keep working right NOW, wait until summer and the new Final Cut Pro X release. No real idea about it other than the interface will likely be significantly changed along with the unerlying video engine.
If you do need to be productive today, order the FCS 2009 (aka Final Cut Studio 3) Suite. Unless your FCP4.5 is the Academic Version, you'll be able to upgrade for $299 (US pricing. Unsure of the cost in the rest of the world.

I have a MacBook Air and for what ever reason, the print settings have gone out of whack. I am not sure how to set to print a normal A4 paper size or a standard envelope. These settings were working O.K., but not now

Now, each time I wish to print either, I have to rest paper size and or Envelope vertical or horizontal. Can anyone assist with how to reset in order to print correctly without the need to rest each time please?

Log in to the Developer forum. You will find instructions on how to install the lastest beta. Your problem is the beta you have installed has expired. All of them did on October 5; you will find hundreds of threads discussing this. If you have a beta it is assumed that you will continue as a beta tester, so a simple update using iTunes will not work.
If you no longer want to be a beta tester install the GM 7.0.2 by restoring from iTunes using DFU mode.

Sure...yes, that makes it POSSIBLE to read the files natively in FCP...if they come from a Panasonic camera. BUT...just try working with those files. Right away the system won't be nearly as responsive as it would if they were ProRes. First...there are no sequence settings for that format...so you'll have to use ProRes and have a green render bar. BUT, that's no big deal. The big deal is trying to work with the AVCHD format, which is VERY processor intensive...inside an application that doesn't like to work with much outside of the FCP editing codecs.
Is it possible? Sure? Will it work well...will you be as zippy and error free as if you converted to ProRes? Not by a long shot. OH, but don't just take my word for it. Go ahead...try it and see. No skin off my nose...no waste of my time. See how well this works.
I'm just here to relate real world working solutions to issues. And yes, I did try that plugin, and boy, was editing a pain.

Good point BDAqua, the Escape key helps get me back to reality in Lion.
While I've only dabbled around a little in Lion since it's release (I upgraded a 10.6 Clone to Lion on one of my FireWire Drives) now I'm currently downloading Mountain Lion (to upgrade a Clone of that Lion Clone) so that now I can continue to move forward in madness.

Creating an index in InDesign CS3 - is there any way to limit where and for what it looks?

I'm creating an index for a 300-page book using InDesign CS3 on both a PC with Windows XP home and a MacPro with OS X Leopard (I take this book back and forth between these two computers). I have created this as a book (.indb) file so I can use the Index panel with the book option checked to include all of the book chapters.
There are two things I was wondering how to do, if they can be done at all.
1 - I want the index to look for entries in the main pages only, not in the master pages.
2 - I'd like to be able to do only attributed text. For example, I'd like the index to find only the word people when it is bold and italic, and not all of the other places it may occur. Can I do this with a style also, paragraph and/or character?

One I do know immediately is your question on "picking up" stuff from master pages and only with formatting. InDesign does not make an index for you -- you have to (oh! manual labor!) mark the words that should appear in the index yourself. So just don't mark them on master pages, or when not bold and/or italic. You might be wondering about that little button "Mark all instances", well, it does what it say, and in your case you do not want to mark all instances.
The Capitalization issue is, AFAICR, somewhere in the Help; and so is your singular/plural stuff. The latter one is easy solved: if you mark a word to be indexed, ID asks you in a friendly dialog how it should be included, and that defaults to the current selected phrase, but you are free to edit the text in that dialog. ID does not mark the word or phrase; it inserts an invisible marker inside the to-be-indexed word that contains all information you enter in the Add Index Entry dialog, and it uses that to determine what page number to add. (That invisible marker is visible with "Show Invisible Characters", and can be cut, pasted and deleted at will -- so to remove a water melon, find the marker, and delete it.)

So in general why would we use a cursor and a for loop to do update in a stored procedure?
Why wouldnt we just use a single update statement ?
is there compelling reason for using a cursor and a for loop: I am reading some code from a co-worker that the business logic for the select (set need to be updated) is complex but the update logic is simple (just set a flag to (0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4).
But eventually the select come down to a key (row_id) so I re-write it using just a single sql statement.
The size of the main table is about 2.6 to 3million rows
Any thoughts on that??

Adding my sixpence...
PL/SQL is not that different from a SQL perspective than any other SQL client language like Java or C# or C/C++. PL/SQL simply integrates the 2 languages a heck of a lot better and far more transparent than the others. But make no mistake in that PL/SQL is also a "client" language from a SQL perspective. The (internal) calls PL/SQL make to the SQL engine, are the same (driver) calls made to the SQL engine when using Java and C and the others.
So why a cursor and loops in PL/SQL? For the same reason you have cursors and loops in all these other SQL client languages. There are the occasion that you need to pull data from the SQL engine into the local language to perform some very funky and complex processing that is not possible using the SQL language.
The danger is using client cursor loop processing as the norm - always pulling rows into the client language and crunching it there. This is not very performant. And pretty much impossible to scale. Developers in this case views the SQL language as a mere I/O interface for reading and writing rows. As they would use the standard file I/O read() and write() interface calls.
Nothing could be further from the truth. SQL is a very advance and sophisticated data processing language. And it will always be faster than having to pull rows to a client language and process them there. However, SQL is not Turing complete. It is not the procedural type language that most other languages we use, are. For that reason there are things that we cannot do in SQL. And that should be the only reason for using the client language, like PL/SQL or the others, to perform row crunching using a client cursor loop.

Just a suggestion. May be from next time you can use F1 help for syntax:
1. Place the cursor on the delete keword in your program and press F1 - You willl get all the possible syntax for delete statement
2. Else open the transaction ABAPDOCU, Click Keyword Help, Enter the required keyword(delete in this case) and press cont.. You will get the syntax.

Best Practices for using FCP and Panasonic HVX 200

Just looking for some suggestions on the easiest settings for using the HVX with FCP. I am not planning to shoot @ 1080 all the time and was just wondering what are best practices as it relates to work flow, stable capture settings for importing and any short cuts to save some time etc....

Illustrator has this "Sketch and Line Art" Under "Object. How is this used and for what? Please enlighten me.

I tried to search and nothing comes up. I can't even find it in the Illustrator's Manual. I am trying to play with different ways to trace or sketch and clicked on this Sketch and Line Art, which seems to always be greyed out, no matter what image I have on the artboard.
Has anyone used it? Please advise.

Is there anyone out there who has used iTunes Match for a large music collection who actually likes and recommends it?

I have over 16,000 custom selected songs in my library. It's the most important thing on my computer by far. Before I purchase Match, I would like to know if other users really like it.

Need advise on dual systems to use fcp and logic

i just got a imac 27" i7, 12Gb ram, 1TB HD and 1GB vRam.
i was using a imac 20" Core 2 duo 2.33Ghz, 1TB HD for video,
On this machine i ran FCP studio, FCP refuses to boot on the same machine with some of my 3rd party plugs in Logic.
So i then went to the macbook pro17 2006 2.33 GHZ with a 500GB HD for audio.
On this machine i ran pro tools, logic etc
now i wonder what the best solution is with the imac, like if i can somehow install one of these as a virtual machine or dual booth partition, i would rather run them at the same time since i switch between often., if the imac is fast enough to i hope., anyone have ideas? will vnware or parralel work out well?
any advise appreciated, seriously

It is not advisable to relocate the sounds that came with LP to an external drive. LP uses a certain hierarchy in the order it looks for sounds. LP "expects" certain sounds to reside in a certain place.
You should move all your Akai, EMU and other sounds that are visible to you, to your external drive. Use aliases in the original folders on your internal HD. You can also do this with your user-created Apple Loops.
Try to keep around 20% of your internal HD space free.
After you moved your files, use Project Manager to scan all your drives and organize your files and directories.
Under LP > Preferences > Global > Project Manager, check "Load Project Manager database on program launch" and select "Search files using: Project Manager database", or "Search files using: Project Manager database and Search Engine".
Your EXS24 files will load like a charm.
